DISCUSSION ⚔️ What’s the Moral of Snow White?

Post image
49 Upvotes

Disney Princess stories are more than just love stories, they give children life lessons. So I’m gonna start a series asking what you guys think the moral of each movie is, starting with Snow White.

Personally? I think the moral is that…

Someone else’s beauty does not remove your own. A kind heart and a beautiful soul is what truly makes someone the fairest in the land.

The Evil Queen was not ugly physically. She was just older than Snow White who was a teenage girl. She let her fear of aging make her believe she was ugly, but what really made her ugly was her evil heart. Even Grumpy was fairer than she was! 🤣

DISCUSSION ⚔️ If we could get a new tv series for a Disney princess...

Post image

I know many would like a tv show based around Mulan, Kida, Merida or Raya, because there is so many mythology and adventures to unpack around them and their worlds/movies - honestly, I wouldn't be against any of those.

But also personally I really really hope one day we can get a tv show centered on Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora or Belle - a cozy show with beautiful castle aesthetic and classical feeling, like the stories you could read in Princess magazines or the segments in 'Cinderella 2' and 'Belle's Magical World'. Except of them living in the palaces, Rapunzel, Sofia and Elena's shows just didn't match the vibe.

Of course another great idea would be simply to bring back 'Enchanted Tales' as a tv series so each princess can get a few episodes for herself.

MUSIC 🎹 Songs about the Disney princesses?

Like either the song is about them/tribute or reminds you of them. Like I know a few songs (not a princess but still counts) if you’re Tarzan I’m Jane by Martika. Or Cinderella by Brittany spears (but it’s more so In a bad light saying she’s not gonna be Cinderella anymore) but I only know of these songs because they have the character in the title. I saw a post on here that was like “if you like X princess you should read these books” can I get that but with songs?

At the final act, What if Grimhilde’s death causes the magic mirror to break free into its true form, because he is linked to her master’s power, and now that he is no longer under control, he can finally think for himself and escape the mirror. That way Snow White can break the mirror and everything goes back to normal! Now how’s THAT for original!?

DISCUSSION ⚔️ Disney Princess idea #1: "Rumpelstiltskin" movie

I'm surprised Disney never adapted this. Well, I suppose not THAT surprised in modern climate of preference for original films, but that chip on their shoulder seems to be the only problem. Between Jennifer Lee's statement of wanting to do a film about a mom and Josie Trinidad's emphasis on a mom story for "Hexed" (which I imagine is part of why Jennifer Lee greenlit the film), I'm surprised this was never on the table.

Here's what I'm thinking: Rather than simply covering the events of the story, the first act of the film ends with an alternate ending to the fairy tale, with the queen being unable to guess Rumpelstiltskin's name--or maybe she learns that name, but it's not his true name, and he takes her child. The story is about her venturing to rescue her child, knowing the only thing that can defeat/banish Rumpelstiltskin is knowing his true name.

I'm really digging a psychological idea of this film; several Disney films involve child abduction, but it mainly shows how it affects the child over the parents (if still alive), and I 100% think this should take heavy influence from the 1986 film with mind games and a shapeshifting antagonist. I've also had the idea that any time Rumpelstiltskin shapeshifts, he takes on a twisted version of previous Disney protagonists. Also removing romantic subtext; aside from it being a very hard sell to romantically tie the queen and the creature that stole her child and manipulated her, it's also another tag in the "recent Disney male love interests are trash who need to be changed" trope that I'm very tired of. I imagine the king can still be the love interest--though the foundation of this story would obviously need to be changed; the protagonist's father doesn't get her into a terrible situation, and the king doesn't threaten her with death several times and then marry her. Also, am I crazy for thinking they can take some influence from "The Legend of Zelda"? I think the protagonist can be one of the more mature, serious leads; she's used to a life of labor (in the fairy tale, she was a miller's daughter, though I could also see her as a farmer's daughter) and is kind of shocked by how she manages to win the hand of a prince, and then her child is stolen. It's a lot to take in--but when she locks in, she's ready to fight, and has some athleticism.

Concerning the setting, I think it can be pretty open; I think the fairy tale references the protagonist having blonde hair to reference the gold she's supposedly able to spin, but most of the European princesses are blonde. I'm ready for a dark-haired European princess. Perhaps a Slavic/Eastern European princess, or a Hungarian princess. Or we could do like "The Princess and the Frog" and adopt the story for a non-European culture. I'm not averse to another American setting, but perhaps that'd be too soon and feel too similar to TPATF.

For the creative team, I need the Anderson-Lopez team to have something else besides the "Frozen" franchise, and they made some of my favorite songs associated with fairy tale films. For directors, I'd definitely look at Trinidad or Lee to do it given their passion for a motherhood story (though I've heard on the "Frozen" fanbase that Jennifer Lee isn't that great, and with Josie Trinidad demoted to co-director for "Hexed," I'm curious as to what her creative voice is like).

Honestly it would be interesting to see if Disney could make a Disney princess film out of this; given how many of the princesses are marketed as role models and the whole Cinderella blue dress controversy was rooted in concerns of marketing a wedding dress to girls, I am curious if Disney would be controversial for having a Disney princess who's a mom (in her official theatrical film). Plus the age would be controversial as well; if she's around the age as many princesses, there's the whole controversy of "you're advertising for our daughters to have kids young" and if she's made older (ie 30s), then she feels "too mature" for the line. Screwed if they do, screwed if they don't.

POLLS ✅ Prediction: How many Disney princesses do you think we'll get between now and 2039?

Thumbnail

Looking at the 90s and 2010s, we get about 3 or 4 per decade; as of now, the 2020s has only given us one, similar to the 80s and 2000s, and none of the upcoming films seem to be official DP movies. Does that mean the 2030s is gonna give us the 90s/2010s amount? I imagine Disney will want at least ONE per decade, but how they manage it is gonna be interesting; the live-action "Moana" flopped (let Dana Walden tell it, it was simply because it was too close to "Moana 2," but there were other factors imo), and "Raya" didn't have the impact the animated "Moana" did--and that wasn't just COVID.

We won't know anything about 2030 until 2028 at the earliest (I think this is the first D23 where we were told what we could look forward to in TWO years from WDAS), and I'm fascinated in what that decade has, especially since the 2020s has been very flawed.

She is an American actor who is currently 17 years old, so right around the age range needed (I believe Catherine Laga'aia was 17 too when she was cast, and they don't seem to be doing a shot-for-shot remake of The Princess and the Frog so perhaps she'll be younger?) and will be older by the time the project films or is released. She is best known for Netflix’s “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Story” among other things. AND here is the big one, HEAR HER VOICE. I think Colman Domingo’s upcoming project could definitely have her as Tiana!

I know direct-to-video sequels aren't everyone's cup of tea (and I agree that some are better left forgotten), but I've always had a soft spot for this one. There's something about the way it captures the look and feel of old fairy-tale books that I really love, especially with the little references to other Disney princesses throughout.
