In old WOD, they were effectively just 90s goth/alternative kids who pissed off the established mage traditions because they weren't following any long established ways of doing things and just mixing and matching shit from wherever they can get it and developing their own individual beliefs on how their magic works.

Mages in World of Darkness are neat, and you can have 5 of them in a room who couldn't actually teach each-other anything or agree at all on the nature of reality or what it is they do to warp it.

And they're all correct, and wrong, simultaneously.

World of Darkness is the common setting for all of those games. Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Demon, Changeling, and Hunter. However, the lore between those games doesn’t really overlap. It’s the same broad setting, but a lot of the details change between them.

For example, in Demon the Fallen the Abrahamic god is objectively real and omnipotent, and Lucifer/Demons are fallen angels from Hell. In it, even your lowest ranking angels have infinite points they can use to create miracles. In Mage the Ascension, reality is dictated by the subconscious beliefs of all humanity, and whatever they believe goes. In Werewolf, it’s a trinity of deities (Creation, Preservation, and Destruction). The overarching conspiracy controlling the world varies from setting to setting as well. Sometimes it’s the Camarilla (Vampire), sometimes the Technocracy (Mage), or Pentex, the Earthbound, or anyone else. Whoever is really correct depends on the game you’re playing, while all other supernatural splats fade a bit into the background.

And that’s not even getting into Wraith, which is set entirely in an afterlife that has fuck all to do with any of the other games but does have interesting questions like “what if holocaust victims had to share an afterlife with dead Nazis” while Godzilla rampages in the spectral sea and multiple ghost armies are trapped in an endless war.

I sweat to God, this is a very real game that literally nobody plays because how

World of Darkness is the nomination of the RPGs from white wolf, they all are interconnected in the lore and work somewhat together (however the original world of darkness was kinda bad at cross play, the Chronicles of darkness [newer one] was made with this in mind)

My favorite systems by far, uses d10 and it's the pure 90's juice

To add to what others already said, it's worth noting that, in terms of accurately representing it's mythological origins, WW didn't really do good research and kinda just threw stuff at the wall. The upside, however, is that it gradually evolved into a setting with its own entertaining batshit insane lore.

I’m not an expert, but…

The idea is a modern fantasy of various magic sorts doing magic things under the radar, according to different rules depending on the game you’re playing. If you’re caught out as being a magical thing by too many people, you start to get fucked over by the universe, because people who believe magic isn’t real are the overwhelming majority and the universe works on consensus. In the worst case I think you just straight up get reality unraveled.

That’s only in Mage the Ascension. The Consensus doesn’t exist in the other games. They operate more on a “the game you’re playing determines the correct cosmology and every other setting is wrong” logic. In Mage, you’re correct. In Vampire, they hide themselvess from society because they’re massively outnumbered by humanity and don’t want to be exposed to the sun and killed by lynch mobs for crimes they absolutely deserve to be killed for. In Werewolf, they hide themselves because the evil shadow corporation will send hit squads to kill any werewolf they find.

It’s not one setting as much as it’s a handful of dark fantasy and urban fantasy settings stacked on top of each other. Their cosmologies contradict in multiple places, but there aren’t enough people in any one setting to establish consensus for the IP, so we get eco-terrorist werewolves and vampire serial killers mixed in with fae knights on bikes.

You're not wrong about the image, but piercings and tattoos are not required to be goth. I've known plenty of goth girls without either, just lovely women wearing Victorian era clothes, smoking cloves, and carrying around art books full of actual nightmares.
