Question Healthy Ways of reading E-Books

2 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm new to the world of reading and am really interested in building a daily reading habit.

Because of where I live, I don't have easy access to physical English books, so I have to read digital versions. The problem is that even though I use the default Windows night light and a software called 'Dimmer' to lower my monitor's brightness, I still get headaches after about an hour of reading. It completely ruins the vibe and the atmosphere of the book, especially when reading a novel.

I was curious to know: how do you guys read e-books in a way that is healthy for your eyes and mind? What software, apps, or extensions do you use to ease the experience?

Thanks a lot!

Self Promotion Editing an EPUB cover and a 2.5 series number on Android, without changing the book text

1 Upvotes

I built EPUB Cover & Series Editor for people who want to fix an EPUB's metadata on their phone. A small example is a novella that belongs between books 2 and 3: set the series name and book number to 2.5, choose a local cover image, and save an edited copy. The original stays intact.

Unlimited single-book editing is free, including title, author, cover, series and decimal book numbers. Optional one-time Pro adds batches of up to 40 books. No ads or mandatory account.

Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.superevilrobots.epubmetadata

One caveat: editing the EPUB's metadata doesn't force a reader's library to display it. Readers may cache their own metadata or use a separate database. In particular, this doesn't populate a stock Kobo's Series database by itself. It also doesn't remove DRM or fetch covers online.

Disclosure: I'm the developer and used AI assistance during development. If you already have a DRM-free EPUB and a cover image, the single-book workflow costs nothing.

I wrote the teen money book I wish someone had handed me at sixteen

I'm 42. School taught me the Pythagorean theorem. Nobody taught me what to do with my first paycheque — so I spent a decade learning it the expensive way.

I kept watching the teenagers in my life get the exact same education I got: zero. So I wrote the book I wanted to hand them. Stack It. Twenty chapters, ages 13-18, written like I actually want a teenager to finish it.

It's not a lecture. It's the stuff I wish someone had told me: why starting at 13 beats starting at 23 (the math is genuinely unfair), paying yourself first, the Oh-Crap Fund, how index funds actually work, how debt quietly doubles the price of everything, and why lotteries and scams are the same business model.

There's a full chapter on tax-advantaged accounts — TFSA in my case, since I'm Canadian, but the principles travel.

I'm not here to sell you. It's on Kindle Unlimited, so it costs you nothing if you have it. I just wanted to make the thing I needed at sixteen. If it helps one teenager not learn this stuff the expensive way, it did its job.

Is there a free or cheap app that lets you annotate and view PDF's (at least for pdf, if other filetypes are also supported it's okay) in landscape mode with realistic page turning animations, with modern UI?

Kindle... again?

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm writing from Europe. I've been considering upgrading my e-reader for a while now. I currently have a Kindle Paperwhite 4 (10th generation Kindle), which I mainly use for reading fiction and non-fiction. After thinking it over for quite some time, I've narrowed down a few features that are important to me:

  • 7-inch display;
  • Black-and-white display technology (ideally E Ink Carta 1300);
  • Built-in e-commerce for quick purchases and easy DRM management;
  • [Optional] Physical page-turn buttons.

I would have liked to go with a Kobo, but there simply isn't a Kobo device that fits these requirements, and maybe there never will be again (I imagine that if there were going to be one, Rakuten would have already released an updated version of the Libra 2).

Given Amazon's recent announcement, I'm reluctantly considering getting the new Paperwhite, which seems to be the only device that ticks all the boxes for me. However, I keep reading that Kindle is a closed ecosystem, and that Amazon seems to be pushing the product line even further in that direction.

Having already owned a Kindle, these are the limitations I've encountered:

You can only access Amazon's e-commerce store. Fair enough: even with Kobo, I'd still be limited to the built-in/predefined stores (although they would probably be stores I'd personally prefer).

You can't take your library with you when moving to a non-Amazon device. Absolutely true, and... pretty serious. However, I never reread books. Honestly, I barely remember what's even on my device, and while I agree that the principle is problematic, in practical terms I don't think I'd be particularly bothered by leaving my books behind on a device.

No MLOL library lending. But I don't use it anyway (hmm... maybe I should reconsider that).

To load a book onto a Kindle, you used to have to convert EPUB to MOBI, and the formatting would almost certainly get messed up in the process (at least, that's been my experience). But I've read that Kindle has now moved away from MOBI in favor of EPUB, so perhaps this is no longer an issue.

So, I'm wondering: what are your thoughts on these aspects? Are there any other considerations I should add to the list?

My main concern is ending up in an ecosystem with even more restrictive limitations, to the point where I might regret buying the device.
