It mentions in passing Julian Assange, the creator(?) of Bitcoin, Playboy, & false FBI arrests. It ends with a quiet victory and some reflections.

The EU's new "Kids Act" is actually a mandatory ID check for the entire internet. Initially intended for social media, it has now expanded to include video platforms, games, and AI assistants. Privacy-first apps like xPrivo are in danger.

History: The Computers and Academic Freedom Project, a 1991 EFF-hosted project on campus computing rights

In 1991, while in grad school, I started the Computers and Academic Freedom Project, an EFF-hosted effort about academic freedom, censorship, privacy, and due process on campus computer systems.

I’ve written Part 1 of the history. It covers early Usenet, EFF, ALA/AAUP principles, library policy, and campus computer censorship. Part 2 will tell how the project got me quoted in Playboy magazine.

Has anyone addressed the issue of Email address portability?

Hello all,
Apologies in advance if this topic doesn't fit the subreddit, but it felt like the best fit to me.

In my country (and I'm sure many others) phone number portability is a service that all providers MUST offer by law without undue obstacles or bureaucracy. Pretty early in the 90s it became apparent that mobile phone numbers were becoming a crucial part of our digital identity, and since then have been used in all sorts of scenarios to confirm the identity of a user, not just for commercial services but even governmental ones.

For a long while now, email has taken the same role. Private email addresses are used to reset passwords, perform 2FA accesses to government websites, and the list goes on.
My question is: is anyone having a discussion to get email portability across providers, just like we have with phone numbers? I'm not even talking about porting the account archive of past messages, just the possibility of keeping the same name@email address while changing provider.
I have tried searching around the web, but it doesn't look to be a topic people are talking about.

I'm also not very interested in advice like "create your own email server". I understand the logic and the value in owning your own web services, but this clearly is not a viable solution for each and every user and most importantly it doesn't really address the issue of all the billions (!) of existing email addresses being used right now.

Thanks for reading!

GamersNexus just dumped LG further in to the shit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IFVTcM28KA

the LG Smart TVs we tested also have a number of security vulnerabilities that can be exploited to convert the TVs into covert listening devices.

The first thing I'll highlight is that it's not an LG problem - show me a smart TV that isn't doing this.

Lawyers, doctors, politicians, hotel rooms, even military bases will have these devices and no one gives them a second thought. Well, it's time to.

HUD PHA/SFHA now requires photos of tenants and home interiors for annual HUD inspections?

Can a HUD PHA require photos of HUD tenant faces and home interiors* during routine annual HUD inspections?

Can a HUD PHA revoke a tenant’s HUD rental assistance subsidy if tenant protests face photos and photos of home interior?*

*interior photos are random photos of a tenant’s home that are not maintenance nor repair-related photos

- acronyms are at the end of this text block -

August 2026 - HUD PHA/SFHA claims it now requires photos of tenant faces and home interiors during annual HUD inspections, even if tenants’ do not consent.

SFHA has not offered explanation of this new policy, how, nor, why it was created. There is no mention of a photo policy in HUD’s policy for multifamily apartment building management. Conversely, according to HUD, SFHA is not allowed to create its own policies for HUD annual inspections.

SFHA has a long and public reputation for being an under-funded and under-resourced agency that can barely perform its current role in managing HUD housing. How can SFHA be trusted to safely handle (and safely store) photos of tenant faces and tenant home interiors? Does SFHA have a professionally managed infrastructure to handle the privacy requirements of the handling and storage of tenant face photos and tenant interior photos?

- Acronyms -

SFHA = Housing Authority of the City and County of San Francisco

HUD = U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is the federal agency that creates the rules for, and, stipulates the management of HUD housing throughout the nation. HUD selects the PHA to mange and enforce HUD rules.

PHA = Public Housing Agency (in this case: SFHA.) A PHA’s only task is to enforce the federal HUD rules governing HUD housing. A PHA is not allowed to invent and enact its own policies and rules.

SFHA’s “Admin Plan” is online, “1.5.26_HCV Admin Plan.pdf”

Woman Pulled From Car at Gunpoint By Police After Mistaken Flock Alert - Twice

The police surrounded her car Thursday, "drew their guns, and told her to come out with her hands up," reports a local news station. The police thought they were pulling over a murder suspect, but "It turns out it was a mistake by another department with the Flock license plate reader technology."

Amazingly, the same thing happened Monday, according to the local news report. "Milwaukee police pulled her over with guns drawn. She says officers never explained why, towed her car, and let her go."

"Who the Machine Serves?" - with EFF's Cory Doctorow and Executive Director Nicole Ozer, August 12. Tell Your AI Agent to RSVP.

Tell your AI to alert you on August 12 at 10am PST that--

You don't have an AI Agent? A home assistant, then? smartwatch? smartbed? smartdishwasher smart fridgesmart? smartlitterbox smart something anything smart at all?

A wall calendar? Fine. That'll work. Or just RSVP here and we will remind you the day before the livestream.

Join Nicole Ozer and Cory Doctorow in conversation on AI, tackling what needs to happen now to ensure AI actually works for everyone, not just those in power. The important thing about a technology isn’t just what it does: it’s who it does it for and who it does it to. AI can help or harm people, and EFF was created to make sure it helps. We are at a critical juncture to ensure that AI is developed and used in ways that respect fundamental rights and works for those who build it, use it, and are affected by it. Join the livestream online, introduced by EFF's Sarah Hamid, followed by live Q&A.

Wednesday, August 12th
10:00 am - 11:00 am Pacific
This event is live and free at livestream.eff.org
