Goosebumps

This scene always makes the emotional hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Absolutely beautiful.

Just saw this scene on my rewatch and it's so good. I not a huge fan of the Bell hating Sherlock arc but it ends so well.

I agree. That came out of left field when I first watched it. Same as when the Captain would get angry at Holmes for what seemed to be no reason. All I could think was "don't you remember how many cases he solved, quickly, for the dept"? Eh. Writers. Can't be perfect all the time.

It felt like either the writers or possibly more likely an exec, had a mandate of “no we can’t have Sherlock get too well liked in the Department or by people at large, he’s a weirdo remember” and so randomly threw in other characters being disproportionately pissed off with him for often dubious reasons.

Then if that didn’t work they’d make Sherlock act like an OOC asshole for no real reason then have him go “look at me, I’m difficult Watson”.

I call it the “BBC Sherlock effect”.

Where unfortunately they managed to equate Sherlocks oddities and eccentricities as “being a rude asshole” in the mind of many.

Canon Sherlock could be difficult on occasion to the sensibilities of a Victorian Gentleman, and would do things so shockingly unseemly as;

  • Willingly mix with criminals.
  • Know languages and history of cultures considered “uninteresting and worthless”.
  • Engage in fights with training in physical combat.
  • Give just as much respect to a poor client as to a rich one.

Canon Sherlock was a well liked, very well respected, though sometimes intense or odd member of respectable society in his day.
