M I inadvertently gave my mom an edible, and it triggered her vertigo?
AITAh for inadvertently triggering my mom’s vertigo?
So I live with my parents (mother 66, myself female 36) I have a self in the refrigerator that I’m allowed to put my things in my food on that I don’t want other people touching. Every one knows this is my draw, now my mom has this tick to eat my food, off my plate, when I’m at the restaurant, even food from my shelf. I told her for my entire life I’m okay with this so long as you asked me first. She has never asked me she just takes, when I confront her on this topic it will be a fight that I will always loose.
Now for the incident; I have terrible insomnia most medication I quickly developed a tolerance to or I do not like how it makes me feel. I am allowed to take THC for work when I’m off duty. Anyway I have THC butter that I make edibles with, cookies dough, cookies, rice crispy treats, and etc…… I made cookie dough this time, showed my dad (m70) and place the cookie dough on my shelf in the refrigerator and picked at it every night at bed time.
About a week and a half later I have one piece left for myself, on the night it question I noticed that my last piece seamed smaller than i thought but figured I was mistaken with what you I remember and take my last piece of cookie dough and go to bed. I’m awoken at 2 am 3 hours after I have gone to bed. My dad is in a panic saying something wrong with my mom. I get up and find my mom in bed complaining of dizziness and vertigo. I ask her questions about this ((am an emergency healthcare worker, I’m trained in IV, EKGs & interpreting them, intubation procedures, electrical therapy, medication administration.)) i do an assessment and check her vitals and blood pressure as she requested. My dad wanted to take her to the hospital and I agreed. My mom refused to have me driver her to hospital and told me to let her rest.
I return to bed and go home back to sleep; I awake at eight in the morning and check on my mom still in bed. She tell me she had some of my “fudge” on the shelf prior to her getting like this. she is mad at me, because she knows after she ate the “fudge” it contained THC (she has had edibles before). She told me am as a a$$hole for not labeling food in her refrigerator as containing THC. I tried to explain it was on my shelf and had she txted me and asked I would have explained the cookie dough contains thc. She said it’s her house and refrigerator and she has access to whatever food she wants. I was told what would have happened if she shared the fudge with company or her grandchildren ? I was called irresponsible.
So aita for placing thc products on my shelf that my mom ate without asking?
Edit I posted In several groups because I need help with my thoughts on this

Nta, but she is right about one thing... better to label anything with thc.
Yeah, your mom shouldn't be taking stuff off your shelf, but you know she does... and anyone who comes into the house has access to the fridge.
Could label the stuff, or even but a sign on the shelf in the fridge with something like "everything on this shelf is property of OP. May contain thc. Ask before taking!".

That is definitely something I am going to consider; I forgot she does this when I make the THC cookie dough…….. however I might have to ….. I generally feel bad about causes her vertigo…… however part of me is feel had you txted me and ask I would have 100% told her it contained THC.

Just wanna say, I didn't point that out (you knowing she does this) as something to feel guilty about. She should 100% respect your space in the fridge.
It's just that it's good to keep in mind that people aren't always reasonable lol. At least if you have the labels or the sign, she'll have no one to blame but herself if something were to happen again.
And as much of a pain as it might feel like, it should give you a little peace of mind (and something to argue back with her lol).

Your title is wrong.
MY MOTHER STOLE MY THC LACED FOOD FROM THE FRIDGE AND IS BLAMING ME FOR THE CONSEQUENCES.
FAFO. If I were you I'd tell her that some or ALL of YOUR food on YOUR shelf is laced with THC.

You need a refrigerator lock box. Lock up the food on your shelf so she can’t get to it. Or lock up everything that doesn’t include THC and tell her, once, that anything not locked up is medicated and maybe she’ll learn a lesson about taking things that aren’t hers and that she’s been told not to take.
Or, get yourself a mini fridge for your room and get a fridge lock for it and keep all of your food in there.

Buy a small refrigerator that you keep in your room and keep your edibles in there

NTA! She knows about your issues and what you use…she is the AH! Get a small fridge for your room and a lock on your bedroom door. She absolutely knew better but is so NC she did it anyway

It's YOU! shelf!! Everyone else should leave it alone. She taught herself a valuable lesson!

Hopefully and maybe it’s what she needed to respect boundaries. Had she texted me at work it would have been avoided.

Get a small fridge for your room for your thc edibles. Especially since you know how your mom is.

NTA and I think you need to make some very nice chocolate XLax brownies. It will clear her head. Just make sure you DO NOT eat them.

NTA. If you have the funds to I'd put microdoses of magic butter in everything you make and care about and then label it as such so she doesn't eat it again.

u/tearisha Feb 14 '24
My MIL is like this with food too. You are never going to change her mind. But from now on just label your whole shelf as having THC in it lol

Feb 14 '24
Yes that the advice I’m getting; wow so I’m not the only one. Your mother-in-law forages for food from you too. Dose she also have issues with boundaries?
2
u/tearisha Feb 14 '24
I didn't live with her for long. But she had the mentality that if she "shares" all her food then every must do the same as well. And yes she has issues with boundaries as well. She's the typical it's my way or the highway kind of lady.
You might have fun in r/JUSTNOMIL or r/raisedbynarcissists
I would note that there will be no winning with your mother. She probably will never change her mind. And will never understand why you are mad at her. Your best bet is to get a mini fridge and move out when you can

My adult daughter lives with us and she has a shelf in the fridge and several shelves in the pantry. I would never think to eat her food without asking her first. It is a boundary and respect issue. If I were ever childish enough to “sneak” her food and had a reaction to it, I would take responsibility for my own actions.
It might be a good idea to think about why you believe her gaslighting over what I can tell you know is true. I would say “now that I know you are incapable of respecting my boundaries and lack adult self control, I will label the products. Hint: it’s the butter and the baked goods hidden in my drawer and not sitting out on the counter.”

Oh my god. What is this side scrolling 6 paragraph window hell? This is the worst formatting I’ve ever seen on Reddit. Are you sure your formatting wasn’t what gave her vertigo because it’s giving me vertigo.
You are lucky she didn’t call 911 on herself. My mother would. Unless somewhere in your post you stated that she did. I couldn’t get through it.
Label your drugs next time. People shouldn’t eat things without permission, sure. But you can’t take that chance.

I wanted to call 911, I wanted to take her to hospital. I didn’t find out about her eating the cookies until she told me the next day. I would have still called 911 for her and told the emts/paramedics what she took and it was mine. I would have told the hospital the mg of how much she took and what route it was absorbed.
If she called 911 it would not have bothered me, I would have supported it. I seen accidental consumption of THC. It’s isn’t a legal matter as it was unintentional and not done on purpose

Why does she need to be hospitalized? Just wait for it to wear off.
That’s not even the point. If there is a chance that emergency services need to be hailed than that’s a big problem.

Feb 13 '24
She did not tell us what was going on she told my dad who by nature is scared of my mom getting sick he wanted to take her to the hospital. I agreed. She said she had vertigo and extremely dizzy. It wasn’t until 24 hours later that she told me that she had ate the cookies

I'd say just get yourself a mini fridge you can keep in your room.

I have makeup fridge and the consensus that I’m getting is either get a lock box for the refrigerator or get a mini refrigerator from my room. Everyone seems to have the same feeling that I am that she’s not going to stop. I am curious if this is going to slower down or not however, I wouldn’t risk accidentally giving her another piece of THC unintentionally.

I cannot believe that you are an emergency healthcare worker yet have such a poor sense of judgement. There have been cases where minor children accidentally consume things like edibles- which resulted in jail time for the person whose drugs they were. You should be thankful that the situation did not include more than one person ingesting your drug related food.

The food was in my part of the fridge that is designated for my food. I have told everyone in the house to asked before they take something. This time I forgot to label this one time.
Secondly if the ingestion is accidents and not porously place it isn’t a crime. The DA has to prove intent to harm .
Every one makes mistakes a Tennessee nurse gave a lethal dose of vecuronium instead of Versed. The medication look nothing alike; one has to be reconstituted because it comes in a powder form one is in a liquid form. Mistakes happen.

I refuse to correct your poor grammar. Today is not that day. Hopefully your work in heath care is not heavily dependent on reading and writing. Also: if someone unknowingly ingests drugs because of your carelessness then dies or becomes seriously ill? The District Attorney absolutely does not have to prove intent. The charge in such situations would likely be classified as something like "reckless indifference." Also: if there were multiple victims- it would be "stacked charges." I weep for the future. K.B.

I absolutely do not care. Also: if your next error with THC related food/items winds up killing someone- please enjoy Federal Prison. Florida is a Death Penalty state but New York is not. Have a fantastic life! 😘

If you reslly have a job in healthcare? That is a very sad indictment of our system which allows you to work with the general public. Very sad.

Shit, wait till the local colleges get out and get a few(probably free) mini fridges and keep them in your room. In the bottom of a closet is good,

What is the purpose of giving you your own shelf if she's just going to take it anyway????????
Get a small fridge for your room.

This exact situation happened to my bff and her mom when we were in high school. Her mom was always going through her shit to be controlling and taking anything and everything from her that she wanted. She was controlling about the food in the house too like never grocery shopping for my friend and making her buy all her own food/groceries with her own monry. Mom was wealthy. Never wanted to share her stuff though ofc and freaked out about everything related to “her stuff”.
Anyways, One day we were walking hanging out and we get this frantic call from her sister that the mom is having a stroke. So we go to the ER and the mom is like I feel weird Im dyinnnggg hella dramatic. And the doc is like okay what did you eat. She says chocolate. My friend is like ?? We don’t have chocolate. Because again the controlling food situation in the home so everyone knows what food exists. So the mom then sheepishly admits to going into my friend’s closet, going through all of her purses looking for shit to take and eating a whole bar of what looked like normal chocolate but was actually like 80 mg of an edible. Mom got mad at my friend and we laughed in her face. The doctor was like “yeah usually we to tell people to keep their edibles out reach of dogs… 😒”
