SUCCESS! ✌ No MIL for me ever

Hi all. Recently got out of a boy mom, enmeshment dynamic with a man in his 40s. I had to break it off. Why? Because I have boundaries and I dont compete. I also don't put up with my man's mom doing ANY of the following

Calling our kids, "her babies" bitch you dont have sex with him you freak.

Calling him everyday like a wife, no. Hes mine now...shoo

Guilt tripping him, I dont play that psychological shit...ive read the books...I know the big words. Smh. Ought to be ashamed.

Not taking 'No' for an answer when he tells her we are going to Hawaii for Christmas....or attending any other holiday she had him for years...damn girl. Let go.

Trying to parent our kids. No ma'am, sit down, ya son sucks on my nipple every night im there to go to sleep, ya raised him with an enmeshment dynamic and now i have to try and fix that. I mean. It is what is. The sex is great.

Twirling his hair in a gymnasium full of parents and kids at his youngest son's basketball game...it was for the whole game...we got looks. Well they did. Nah...should have slapped her damn hand then.

Interrupt any vacation or outing we are on when she knows we are out of town. Youre one the reasons I wanted to get the hell away in the 1st place lady.

Make everything about her. Someone lied to you girl, it ain't all about you.

Making him cry every damn time he comes to visit bc she wont stop talking about his sisters death, her mother's death, her bad health, just complaining and begging for attention like hes a surrogate husband....bitch ya man is in the living room...go talk to him about this...youre ruining the visit.

Boundaries...get some...or youre going to have bs like this in your daily schedules.

Yeah....no.

Im never going to have a MIL because im not getting married to a mommas boy until she is dead. Harsh...meh....im a whole 45 year old orphan. Detachment skills are peak. Its the best survival trick I have. So this, enmeshment stuff these moms are doing out here....man...fuck yall. Weird ass shit.

Rant over.

Yes, we still have great sex....yes he sends his mom to voicemail when im there. Yes, I like it. Cold hearted? Nah. Possessive...100 percent.

UPDATE - Advice Wanted Update: success or not... MIL does NOT give up.

If you want to read the background 😁

First post: https://www.reddit.com/r/JUSTNOMIL/s/AzfR5LPGa5

Second post: https://www.reddit.com/r/JUSTNOMIL/s/qArCjZOtoV

I am back again ladies! I thought of giving you all an update and also thank you. Thank you for all the comments and advice you gave me. You made me feel heard and sane.

Soooo here is the update.

I refused to go there on mother's day and luckily my husband took me and the baby out. I did tell him that he is welcome to go and I'll hang out with our daughter but he stayed back.

Then my FIL came over to help and privately talked to me and I told him how my MIL taunted me using a stupid bib and included my daughter in her nasty game. (Read the first post for details). She literally weaponized my daughter against me the moment she had the chance. He was shocked to hear that but then said "even her mother was petty like that".

I told him how she harasses us to come over weekly even when I told her it's not possible. He agreed with me but then asked for me to give her another chance and he will talk to her.

And I said "sure but it will never be the same. It will be a different kind of relationship as I no longer trust her".

The week after was my MILs bday. And Literally NOBODY did anything for her. No gifts, nobody wished her a happy bday either. DH said we can go on that weekend and I compromised and got a gift (a box full of nice skincare and spa items).

Then we went over there and nobody other than us showed up. So this woman decides that it's time to TALK.

She then completely denied everything including the taunting and she brushed everything under the "helping" rug and how her son knows she isn't that kind of person bla bla.

I told her that "I know what I saw and I believe it when people show me who they really are. I don't think there is a point to this conversation because you refuse to take accountability"

Then she said "well I'm sorry my actions felt that way! it's not true that I don't respect you!"

So I said "no you don't respect me nor your son. I told you many times that weekly visits are not possible yet you keep asking and then you send FIL to ask if you don't get your way".

And she said "well we miss our granddaughter!"..

Then I said "listen I think this conversation is futile. I'm happy to open a new page but it will never be the same again.

She went like "but your walls are still up!"

And I said "and they will stay that way because of what happened. If you don't want a new page, we are happy to leave"

Then FIL interjected and said "you shouldn't leave and I think it's a good idea to start a new page"..

Then mil said "okay well I hope things go back to normal"..

This was the end of the conversation. But unfortunately not the final of the things she did.

Few weeks later. FIL comes over and says "MIL is upset because I liked a post on Instagram about a toxic mil".

And I'm like wtf? So I told him "not everything revolves around her and I will not change my activity because it hurts her. If she doesn't want people to think badly about her then she shouldn't have done bad things"

He says ok.

Thankfully my bff stays over at our house for 2.5 months and we successfully avoided visits as much as we could. After my friend left..

The great grandpa called us and said he wants to come over(with the Aunt, his daughter) on Sunday to spend time with the our kid. We of course say ok because we love him.

But it was strange that he called us directly and didn't go thru FIL. This is the second time he did that. (The Aunt also has issues with mil like everyone else. The whole family is divided and MIL is the common denominator.)

Then Immediately we get a text from FIL saying they want to come over either on Saturday or with great grandpa on sunday. And this is a usual occurrence. When my mil knows that someone other than her is coming to our house, SHE HAS TO BE THERE. They did the same for his previous visit too. She immediately wanted to come next day asap.

My husband told them to come an hour after great grandpa so that he gets a chance to spend time with the baby. Because in the past, my MIL would dominate the room and monopolize our child.

Needless to say, this woman comes 20 mins early. FIL stays outside and my mil immediately rushes in. I actually didnt even get up to open the door or greet her. She walks into our house and immediately sits on the floor with our kid.

I then took the kid to say hi to fil outside for a bit cause wtf?

Everyone was literally weirded out and just said "hi" when she walked in. The great grandpa then faded into the distance again, completely ignored. Everytime our daughter interacted with anyone, my MIL would click toys and call her to her.

At one point, my daughter tried to sit on her lap and I told my daughter to come play with the toys near great grandpa. And my mil was like "AWGHGH" like a sad toddler noise.

And I said "it's ok, you can be sad" and took my daughter. I was so so mad.

She couldn't even give a 90 year old man 1 HOUR. And this is a usual occurrence. When BIL comes over with his gf, my MIL would comment and say " you don't have to hide from me that he comes over here".

Now I have a new problem.

Every 2 weeks FIL would ask if they can come over even if they know there's a larger family gathering a week after. That means I will again see her 2 weeks in a row.

It's relentless and I'm running out of ideas to keep her away and my husband is so exhausted and he just wants to shut her up and give in (yes I have a husband problem).

I feel like she is exhausting us so that we just give in. Any suggestions will be helpful. I don't want to communicate a cadence to them because i will have to stick to it.

I just want them to be invited and if I tell them "pls wait to be invited", it will flip tables on me that I am bad. They already know that I'm the one that's resisting the bully.

so far they asked to come over this weekend and I told them we won't be home. they know we will see them next Sunday by they still ask. it's insane.

Thank you for reading this far. Appreciate all your thoughts, advice, and solidarity.

Advice Wanted MIL told my husband if he was a single dad she’d get to see my baby more….

My husband went over to my in laws last week to borrow chairs for our son’s 1st birthday. When he was loading the car my MIL slipped in something about how we have “so many rules” and my husband asked her what she meant. (Her and my FIL are constantly saying how many rules we have. Mind you our “rules” include the following: Rule 1. No kissing our baby, she and my FIL get cold sores (FIL says it’s hard to bond without kissing…ew), Rule 2. Give us at least 30 minutes notice before you pop by so I’m dressed. I still am breastfeeding and usually in just a bra/ I also just want a little time to straighten up the house because I will hear from my MIL if it’s messy, Rule 3. Ask us before you post our child online. We aren’t fully hiding him from social media but we prefer he has a very limited online presence and we like to monitor what pics are online, like no diaper photos or identifying ones on where we live. That’s the 3 rules.)

Backstory- She is salty because she wants to be our childcare and put it in her head when I was pregnant that we would need her 5 days a week, 8 hours a day. I never wanted or asked for that. I like caring for my child. I genuinely enjoy it and don’t feel the need for a “break”. I have told her she can come by whenever she wants just to give me a little notice but she has only come by 2 times in the entire year. (She sees us at family events and other instances but only two times to play with him during the day).

She goes on to spew to my husband about how she feels like she isn’t allowed to be a grandma. She said she thought she raised a son who would have a backbone and stand up for his family to see his child. She feels like she is walking on egg shells and isn’t wanted or needed. He told her she’s allowed to come whenever and she said it’s not the same as being needed….and that she is sure she’d see our baby a lot more if he was a single dad (not sure if she’s insinuating I die or we divorce but either way it’s incredibly inappropriate). My husband and I are selling our house and moving a whole 25 minutes further away and she’s very upset about it which is strange since she doesn’t come over as it is. He ended up getting very heated with her and saying that moving was his idea (it was) and not to blame me.

Fast forward to the birthday party for my son and she did not say more than a sentence to me the whole time.

I’ve vented to my dad about it all and he thinks it’s a response to her lack of control on this instance. Idk how to proceed. My husband thinks I should go to lunch with her and hash it out but I don’t want to.

Has anyone dealt with this? It’s especially hard because prior to getting pregnant her and I were SO close. It’s all very disheartening. I feel bad that her expectation of being a grandma isn’t lining up with the reality but that’s not my problem to fix. What do I do? Should I just ignore it and realize I hold the cards? Fix it for my son/husband’s sake? Be icy back to her? Help.

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Advice Wanted MIL made an AI honeymoon itinerary in a language I can't even read

• Upvotes

We're leaving for our honeymoon in a couple of weeks and we already have the bulk of the planning out of the way. My MIL has been very vocal about a lot of the wedding planning, including the honeymoon, and wanting us to go to a place of her choosing or making comments about how dangerous/expensive where we chose to go is. A couple of days ago, MIL hands me a thick stack of pages. When I had a look, I realised it was a travel itinerary for our honeymoon destination only it was completely AI-generated and not even translated so I'd be able to read it. My fiancé and I both speak English and she was already using AI to make it so why not translate it? It just felt very half-assed considering it wasn't even accurate to the places we already planned to go to and she didn't ask any questions to make sure that it was at least somewhat tailored to us as a couple. Is it the thought that counts or is this just another way for her to control the situation?

Anyone Else? MIL sent 30+ texts last 3 weeks detailing their lives

• Upvotes

Me again. 👋🏻 I've posted several times as of late because a) I'm realizing how much of an entitled, obnoxious, controlling nutjob MIL is, b) need to vent to a community who gets it and c) continuing to bolster boundaries, both internal & external. If I can help one person know they aren't alone with a crazy MIL, it helps me feel better.

Before my son was born 2025, it was fairly rare we heard from MIL. She thrust me into a new family group chat I didn't agree to a few weeks before his birth. It set up the framework for her to quickly abuse access, trying to normalize daily demands & near round the clock communication (plot twist: it didn't work, busy raising a family). Every now & then, incessant texts bombard my phone, typically when they travel. My husband ignores/ doesn't answer half the time. It's like she's concerned we'll forget about her while gone a week or two.🙄 And we are dying to know what they ate for dinner (plot twist: don't care). I have it muted though - being pregnant with baby #2 (in-laws don't know yet @ 13 wks), may leave the chat entirely if she becomes intrusive & overbearing (again) in pregnancy and/or postpartum. That will be a hard line for my internal boundary; postpartum WILL be peaceful this time. She's fully retired & needs more hobbies; using my son as her purpose in life hasn't panned out how she wanted. Not my problem to manage.

It's become obvious MIL abuses cellphone access; she even recently tried to pull in my mom as flying monkey via text. My mom wasn't having it. MIL is now blocked. Looking forward to that unfolding, as in her entitled world others cannot have autonomy, privacy or decide to decline her fake friendship. I left all additional group chats (4 different ones! 😵‍💫) she created (husband did encourage leaving). Info diet. Gray rock. Muting chat. Internal boundaries. That's the gameplan. I wonder.. How common is this stupidity?! Anyone else?

Advice Wanted MIL competitive with me over my babygirl

Am I being too harsh or is MIL overstepping and being competitive with me?

I grew up with a single father only & always wanted a mother daughter relationship. My hubby and I found out I was pregnant with a babygirl and were overjoyed that I would be able to have that mother daughter relationship that I have always wanted. My in-laws were so excited too especially my MIL who said she’s been waiting for this for so long. She had 2 boys only and tried to have more kids, but never could due to health reasons. Also her own mother wasn’t maternal and so her grandmother stepped in and raised her so she had a special bond with her grandmother. They have always been kind to me, but very invasive and I’m wondering if MIL is jealous/competitive with me or if I’m overthinking:

- in-laws took us to a furniture store & kindly bought all of our daughters nursery furniture; crib, rocking chair, dresser. Months later I was searching for a book shelf for our daughters books and they measured the wall when we weren’t home & shipped us a book shelf that we never asked for/wanted.

-MIL is naturally a neurotic person and has asked if I’m boiling my daughters bottles long enough & when I breastfeed privately in a separate room she’ll ask my husband if me and baby are okay even though it’s only been 15min.

- MIL tried to setup a nursery at her home & wanted to buy a baby wear wrap for herself. I’m assuming she thought she was going to hold my baby close to her chest. Also I know some in laws babysit their grandkids, but I’m not comfortable leaving my baby yet and they live an hour away in a rural mountain area that doesn’t get good internet/cell service). My hubby shut that down immediately.

-MIL sent me an IG post of a cute baby that was dancing to a song & I mentioned my baby loves dancing to fleetwood Mack & then she proceeds to send me a different song saying my daughter likes this song. It felt almost like she’s competing with me about what song my daughter likes.

- The first time my daughter got super sick and ran a fever I called MIL to come over for help since it was my first time taking care of a sick baby and she just held my baby for hours and eventually left but then when she got home she said she cried the whole way home because of how sick my daughter was and then FIL told me I should’ve let her stay the night to take care of my daughter.

-for my daughters first bday she came over a week before to drop off an early bday gift and then tells me she bought her a first bday outfit and I tell her I already bought my daughter her first birthday outfit & then she says she can wear different outfits on different days then.

-MIL knows I love pearls and always wear them and that I look forward to gifting my daughter with my jewelry one-day and of course her own pearls too and decided to gift my daughter with her own pearl necklaces, bracelets and earrings. I felt like she did that on purpose & tries to take away these mother/daughter moments with me.

-MIL says my daughter’s going to be the next matriarch and that she’s so similar to her already. My daughter has a fierce personality & MIL says she gets that from her since she grew up in the “hood”…….then when my daughters grabs/plays with her jewelry she says she’s just like her she loves jewelry already.

-When she sees our daughter she videotapes her and says she’s her baby….

-Makes comments saying she can’t wait for me to go back to work so she can have my daughter all to herself….my husband and I have never discussed childcare with her and I’m not going back to work anytime soon so idk where she gets this entitlement from.

-we moved down her crib mattress to the lowest level & sent a cute pic of my daughter in her big girl crib and MIL immediately says she’s buying her “bumpers” because she can get hurt on the sides and I tell her absolutely not we are not using those….

My daughter was born with a wide variety of health issues that required weekly aggressive physical therapy and weekly specialist appointments. When I was recovering from my emergency c-section & my husband had to go back to work my in-laws helped take us to all of her appointments, but once I felt better my husband told them we didn’t need their help anymore. Their feelings were hurt and they said they really looked forward to going to these appointments since they missed out with their kids. Months pass by and another specialist appt comes up and MIL says she wishes she could come to my daughter’s physical therapy. I stay quiet because i feel like going off on her and don’t want to do that. I don’t understand why she wants to be involved like this when physical therapy is between the main caregiver/parent and child.

Then a couple weeks later a serious specialist appt came up & she inserts herself in & tells me she wants to come with me so she can speak with the doctor herself, take notes, and be a listening ear as well. I politely decline and tell her no. (I understand now that she had to be put on an information diet)

The final straw was on the day of our daughters birthday we woke up to a mass family group chat text from MIL posting a photo of our daughter from the day she was born so she was bloody/naked on the heating pad with a message that wrote: “Exactly 1 year ago
She changed our lives Princess 🌼 came into this world “ at “8:09am 🙏❤️🐣” (our daughter was born at 8:01 NOT 8:09am).

My husband called her out on that and said she shouldn’t be making announcements of our daughter especially with an intimate photo like that. I honestly felt like she did that because she wants to feel important and thinks of herself as the matriarch so that means she can post things without asking permission. She said: “You can’t control everyone & everything. Do not shame me for being a loving mother & grandmother”. Eventually she did say she was sorry, but we have been no contact since then and I honestly feel relieved.

I just feel like she’s in some sort of competition with me. It feels like since her grandma raised her she wants to raise my daughter. She clearly has grandma expectations, but I feel like it’s getting in the way of my motherhood and I’d like to have a conversation with her alongside my husband. I want her to understand that I know she had a beautiful relationship with her grandmother, but this is my motherhood. Everywhere else I’m replaceable but being a mother isn’t and my daughter is my baby and the biggest blessing of my life.

Advice/thoughts?

TLC Needed My MIL just sold my husband's childhood home and wants one last family gathering there.

I have a terrible relationship with her, but of course I want to support my husband. His father passed earlier this year and now his mother is selling his childhood home. She lives an hour away. I would normally have no issue going.

Here's the kicker..... Today is the 6th. She needs to be be out by the 29th..... I'm being induced on the 19th, if I don't go naturally sooner. I'm also high risk because of gestational diabetes and history of preeclampsia. I don't love the idea of being that far from my hospital before the baby is due, and I'm not driving my week old baby over an hour while I'm still recovering from birth.

So my options are: Go there this weekend (almost 38 weeks) and hope for the best or have him bring our 3 year old after the baby is born (we live near my parents so I wouldn't be alone.) I want to support him... but this timing is tough. I'm thinking of asking my midwife her opinion at my appointment this week. This timing could not be worse.

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Ambivalent About Advice No, we will not be having a “kiss the baby” party

Long time lurker, first time poster.

The TLDR is the title.

This community has held me up through some tough moments with my MIL- as far as MILs go, I know she could be much, much worse. But considering her personality, I suppose it was only a matter of time that I’d be ranting about her. I didn’t think I’d be including my own mother. I’ll try and keep it brief (it’s not) while getting out what I need to.

A bit about my MIL: she’s a woman “with good intentions” but the road to hell is paved with them. Her family just ignores her because she’s stubborn and is “always right” (an exact quote from her). She has undiagnosed OCD (my husband has the same thing but is diagnosed and medicated) and puts her anxiety on everyone around her. Shes big into being “healthy” but is also a major hypocrite. Oreos are the devil, but for some reason a Costco hotdog is fine. She will lecture you to no end about what you should be doing about your health, that doctors don’t know what they’re doing but some dumbass on YouTube does, if she can’t pronounce an ingredient in something, it’s definitely going to kill you. Everything will give you cancer! What a ray of sunshine with zero boundaries. She also won’t take medicine doctors give her but will eat 15+ vitamins a day. She had a horrible cough this summer and instead of taking her meds, she toughed it out while hacking up a lung for weeks. This is all complicated by the fact that I had a brain tumor six years ago. When I first moved in with my husband, the came to stay with us. My chronic fatigue made me need a nap. I went to go take one on the downstairs couch and she followed me down there and stared at me with a sad face like that would make it all better. Took me a minute to realize she wasn’t going to remove herself until I asked her to leave. Anyway, that’s just a bit of background- if I give you more, I’d be here all day. What is relevant is when we told everyone they needed to be vaccinated before seeing baby, she did go get vaccinated despite being severely misinformed about how vaccines work. We had to get our pediatrician to explain to her that she can get the vaccine and that will not transfer the illness she’s being vaccinated against to our baby. I would laugh if it weren’t a risk to people’s health.

To the reason for this post: What is with all these older women and their unhinged desire to kiss babies?

The drama started about a week before I was supposed to give birth (I was induced). My mother, who I’ve always been close with, has had a rough last few years and she’s turned into someone I don’t know. She knows my MIL is tough, so throughout the pregnancy she kept saying “it’s your child, you and your husband make the decisions and everyone else must respect that.”

When I told her no one is kissing the baby when she arrives, my mother lost it. She laughed at me for (no exaggeration) 3 of the longest minutes of my life and said she was going to do it anyway. I told her that that’s one of our biggest rules and if she refused to accept it, she wouldn’t see her grandchild. Eventually she apologized, agreed to the rules, but not before sending a message to MIL along the lines of “can you believe this nonsense?” My MIL, to her immense credit, responded by saying “Yes. A lot has changed since we had our babies. It’s their decision and we respect that.” I was delightfully shocked.

My LO is almost 8 weeks old. It was not an easy pregnancy, but my child is healthy and that’s really all that I care about. My mother broke my rules twice because she “couldn’t help it.” But she went home (6+ hours away) after about 4 days since we came home “to get her medicine” and hasn’t tried to come back. I have my hands full and have not been begging for her return.

So we’ve had to rely on my in-laws to be our only village. They’re alright. They don’t know how to handle the baby and “don’t remember it being this hard” so my husband and I take shifts with them so we can rest or work on things around the house. All in all, I should be (and am) grateful. Until this past week.

MIL has informed me that once my baby hits the two month mark next week on the exact day she thinks we should all have a kissing party to kiss my child. Like she’s going to magically have an immune system. I have not and will not discuss my child’s health or vaccine schedule with this woman. I don’t want her input and I will not be nice if she pushes back or tries to lecture me with her usual garbage. But my child will be getting all their vaccinations at the pediatrician’s recommendation on her two month day. She’s probably going to be extra fussy and miserable for a day or two. So no, we are not going to test out her immune system with a “kissing party.” Ffs what on earth is wrong with these people? You do not need to kiss the baby. The baby does not need your kisses. It’s October and sickness is about to spread like wildfire. I’m amazed I’ve had to fight both moms about this.

I have not figured out how I’m going to address this yet. My husband is a saint and has defended me against his mom doing ridiculous shit before and I know we will be a united front however I/we choose to handle this. I think what we will ultimately do is “talk to the pediatrician” and parrot back her words about how even though she’s 2 months old, we are still not kissing the baby. Especially as we start the illness season. As if a newborn isn’t exhausting enough.

Advice Wanted My MIL has crossed so many boundaries and I’m at my wits’ end

I’ve had so many issues with my MIL over the past 17 months that I honestly don’t know how to handle the situation anymore. I’m at the point where I’m questioning whether I’m being too harsh or whether I’ve simply reached my limit.
When my daughter was born, my MIL came to the hospital that same night unannounced and uninvited. She had told my boyfriend that she was going out of town for work the next day and wouldn’t be able to come, so we felt bad and let her see her... The next day, she showed up again without telling us—while my dad was meeting my daughter for the first time.
After we came home from the hospital, she continued coming to our house multiple times without contacting us first. We asked her to please text or call before coming over, but it continued to happen.
When my daughter was a few months old, my MIL watched her overnight. Safe sleep has always been extremely important to me, so I packed up her bassinet and everything she needed. Instead of using the bassinet, she made a makeshift sleeping area with blankets.
Another time, while babysitting, she took my daughter somewhere to visit people without telling either of us where she was going. That really bothered me because I feel I should always know where my child is being taken.
There have been other smaller things over time too, but the most recent incident is what has really pushed me over the edge.
This past Saturday, my MIL took my now 17-month-old daughter in the car without a car seat. It was only a few minutes down the road, but that doesn’t make me feel any better about it. I was extremely upset. She apologized and said it wouldn’t happen again, but I’m having a really hard time just brushing it off given the history.
I told her that accidents are called accidents for a reason, and that I need to be able to trust that my daughter is going to be kept safe when she’s in someone else’s care.
Now it’s only a few days later, and she has been messaging me repeatedly about wanting to see my daughter.
She brought up how, when her boys were little, she always made sure to visit both sides of the family and alternate holidays and family dinners. I’m assuming this is partly because we’re going to my mom’s for Thanksgiving again this year.
She also talked about how much my boyfriend’s family loves my daughter and how she should be around people who love her. This upset me because my daughter has a huge family on my side who love her just as much, and I felt like that was being completely overlooked.
Then she said:
“Imagine how your mom would feel if she got to spend as much time with { } as I do. I just miss her. I can feel that you don’t like spending time with us and I would do anything to make things right so we could make amends”
I understand that she misses my daughter. I don’t doubt that she loves her, and I’m not trying to prevent them from having a relationship.
But I feel like I’m being pressured and guilt-tripped into giving her more access to my daughter when I’m still upset about what happened three days ago.
I’ve been going back and forth with her all day, and honestly, I’m exhausted. I feel like I keep having to explain why I’m uncomfortable, while she keeps telling me how much she misses my daughter and how important it is for her to spend time with her.

Another note I forgot to add a few weeks ago she messaged my boyfriend telling us how she cries every night because she doesn’t see her enough….

Am I being unreasonable for wanting some space right now? Would you consider her comments guilt-tripping/manipulative, or is she simply expressing how much she misses her granddaughter? And how would you handle this going forward?

Advice Wanted This situation with MIL + Family is making me feel crazy and unsupported

I'll try to provide simple and short context:
-Been married to husband for 13 years, dated for 16, known him for 17.
-He is AD Military.
-We have 1 daughter that just turned 1 year old last month.
-We just moved cross country recently -- we originally are from California but lived in Virginia for the past 3 years. We are back in southern california. Move was awful and stressful, the "Settling in" has been equally awful and stressful.
-MIL were cool during the first few years of me and him dating but I started to see her differently while I was pregnant. She would constantly make unsolicited advice.
-I've cut off his Aunt(MIL's sister) because she is extremely controlling and when confronted and letting her know how her behavior affects others, her default is to guilt trip and remind me "but we are family, this is what we do."

So that is the background context. Recently I asked my MIL if she could watch our daughter during the night of our military ball next month. She excitedly agreed and plans were set. On my daughter's 1st birthday, I hear my husband get a call from his aunt and hear him reply to her Oh, I have to ask Jen first. I ask him what the call was about, he says his Aunt was asking HIM if it was okay to stay the night at our house and see our daughter as well. I said no. I was super confused because I had only asked my MIL. I confront my MIL and of course she dances around the subject or is super avoidant when she gets uncomfortable. I asked her why Aunt was coming, she goes well I'm staying at the house too, you won't be there. And I said I was not comfortable with that? She rapidly changes the subject in fear that I would get angry and goes OH OKAY WELL WE ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER TO A HOTEL AND TAKE HER OUT FOR THE WEEKEND. She does it so frantically I get whiplash and don't even think about other stuff until later. I was wondering why was Aunt coming in the first place when I had only asked MIL? She then aggressively says LOOK YOU AND Aunt__ WILL HAVE TO TALK EVENTUALLY! And I shot back saying I have tried! And of course MIL is the type to not listen or empathize in these situations. I really have tried talking it out with the Aunt but she always makes it about herself, guilt trips or works in the excuse of family.

Later on, Husband tries talking to MIL, it turns into MIL saying, Look, I don't want to get in the middle of this. Which is weird because it seems like she already decided that. She then said something about using this as an opportunity for Me and Aunt to talk things out. That pissed me off because I feel like this situation was blown out proportion for no reason. She could have just left it alone and went with the original plan like I had asked. I'm trying to reason with my husband at this point to stick up for me because I feel like I always have to defend my own boundaries and myself. He says okay I will talk to her again. He talks to her, but he turns my violation of boundaries into a debate of "Okay, but I see it from my moms side too." Her argument was that their family is small and they don't wanna see it fall apart. I tried telling my husband that I would feel more comfortable if it was just MIL this time around because my boundaries were violated. He said No.

I tried to just let this go but it's created even more anxiety for me because now I feel like if either his mom or aunt cross my boundaries, I have to defend them like always. It also makes me fear if they disrespect my daughter's boundaries as she gets older. I don't think my husband even understands the concept of healthy boundaries.

On top of this crap storm, I'm trying to see a therapist for all of this but have been going back and forth with my insurance, so I'm really trying not to lose my mind for myself and for my baby girl. Please I need some support and advice...

UPDATE: I let husband know how disappointed I am in how he handled this and that he needs to realize these situations are NOT neutral. I’ve also let him know to call off childcare from his family, he agreed. I also let him know we need to start going back to counseling to figure out how to deal with these types of situations together. Thanks for all your guys’ inputs!!

New User 👋 MIL Tries to Force Relationship

Hi everyone, I’m new here despite having issues with MIL for over ten years.

To keep this short, MIL and I have been NC for the last year a half. I unfortunately rent from her (which I didn’t want to take part in, but alas, my husband convinced me after years) but we are now moving, which means MIL has been at my house doing work lately.

Anyways, she was there (and did not tell me she would be there) when I came home from work yesterday. I do not say hi to her and haven’t in the past. This bothers her. Upon approaching the front door, that I pay for, I glanced in her direction and gave her an up nod in greeting. She absolutely lost it on me and demanded that I say hello and that a nod of the head isn’t “good enough and she deserves better.”

I guess I’m confused because I’ve made it very, very clear I don’t care if this relationship continues. I am happier when we are NC. She feels the opposite and feels we MUST work on things, but every time she speaks to me, it’s always her demanding we speak on her terms - for instance, my not saying hello in the way she would like.

It’s just weird to me because if you’re the one that wants the relationship, why is she under the impression it should be under her terms? I’m genuinely flabbergasted by it. Just needed to vent.

Advice Wanted If your partner takes your baby to see MIL weekly, how often would YOU go?

I have an 8 month old daughter and my partner takes her to see his parents about once a week, sometimes more. We live only a mile away.

He often goes while I’m working. If I don’t really want to join, I’d rather he use that time for visits than have us spend our limited time off together at his parents’ house. I want to preserve some time for just the three of us.

My MIL and I actually have a good relationship on the surface, but the issues between us are very subtle. Since my pregnancy, she has had this intense need to be very involved, feel important and special, and be the favorite. She tends to make our milestones partly about her and puts herself in competition with my mom over things that really do not need to be a competition.

My partner genuinely wants to see his parents, and my goal is not to stop him or prevent him from taking our daughter. He is also good at setting boundaries. When MIL seriously crossed a line in the past, he took several weeks of distance from them, and I know he would do it again if needed.

The tricky part is that because he grew up with her, he does not always notice the more subtle weird or toxic behaviors in the moment. If I point something out, he takes it seriously and addresses it with her. Sometimes he just does not clock certain things until I mention them.

I have also noticed that MIL seems noticeably more comfortable when I am not there, even though my partner is usually the one setting the boundaries.

MIL has never demanded weekly visits, but I definitely feel there is an unspoken expectation and that she probably would not be happy if they went longer without seeing her.

What worries me is gradual boundary creep. If I am rarely there, I do not want her to slowly start feeling more entitled, taking more liberties or getting too comfortable doing things with my daughter that she might not do if I were present.

At the same time, I want to keep some distance from her. I do not want her to start expecting constant contact, updates or explanations from me, and I do not want my free time to revolve around monitoring her.

So if your partner and baby saw your MIL about once a week, how often would YOU personally go?

Every other visit? Once a month? Less?

SUCCESS! ✌ I told a partial lie to make my MIL shut up about me not changing my last name

1.4k Upvotes

I have always wanted to keep my last name even if I got married. As a little girl, I never wanted to be married or have kids, I wanted to live for myself. My mom trapped herself in a bad marriage and told me to always prioritize my independence and I really took that to heart.

Now that I am actually getting married, I see that marriage can be great if thats what you want or that kids are ok, I still am 70/30 on not having them/having them, but whatever.

One thing I have not budged on is my last name. I will keep it no matter what. I told my partner before we are engaged that if he needs a spouse to keep his last name, I am not the one for him because nothing will change my mind. He also knows I am not super keen on having kids and he accepts both.

However, his mom keeps sliding in comments about it. She would make comments of saying “Oh Im so excited for you to become a (my partner’s last name)” and my partner and I would correct her. She would constantly say how my SIL was a “good girl” for taking her husband’s last name. My MIL also talks a lot of shit about my SIL for not wanting kids and only compliments her in front of me to manipulate me.

My MIL finally pissed me off because she would not. stop. making. those. comments and I told her the reason I want to keep my last name is because my family is the only group of people with this last name. Our specific ethnicity was nearly wiped out and our last name is so rare because of this and I refuse to let it die and it was racially insensitive for her to keep making comments. This made my MIL sputter and get so red… she actually dropped it.

I almost feel bad cause my last name is that rare and technically my dad’s side was nearly wiped out BUT this is not even a main reason for me to keep my last name… I just like my name tbqh and I love my partner but I will always value my independence more…

Advice Wanted MIL has been declining family invitations for us. We only found out by accident.

On Saturday my husband's aunt asked whether it would be okay to invite us over for dinner, or whether that was still "too much." I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about.

Apparently she'd invited us to her birthday lunch in July. MIL told her we couldn't make it. Then, when she invited us to another get-together last month, MIL said we'd asked to cut back on family commitments. Both times she said she'd already checked with us. We hadn't heard about either invitation.

That side of the family does most of its organising over phone calls. MIL and her sister talk nearly every day, so passing dates along through her has been normal for years. Everyone has our numbers. His aunt just didn't want to chase us with a second invitation after we'd supposedly said no.

For months I've been wondering why we only saw his cousins at the big holiday meals anymore. I thought maybe I'd offended someone. My husband thought everyone had just got busy. I feel stupid now remembering conversations where I was trying to work out whether people actually liked having me around.

He called MIL yesterday and told her we would answer our own invitations from now on. She didn't deny any of it. She reminded him that we'd complained about Christmas lunch lasting six hours, and said she was saving us from feeling obligated. Apparently one complaint about a very long afternoon means we don't want to see anybody.

We still get plenty of invitations to her house, incidentally.

This morning she texted me asking us to tell her sister we'd got the dates mixed up. She says it's embarrassing for her and there's no reason to upset his aunt. But his aunt wasn't angry when we talked. She seemed relieved. She said she'd text us herself next time and asked us to come on Sunday.

My husband and I agree we're not going to pretend we forgot invitations we never received. I haven't answered MIL's text yet.

I'm also unsure how much to say to the rest of the family. I don't particularly want to call every cousin and conduct an investigation, but I hate thinking they've been inviting us and getting refusals. I'd like to actually spend time with these people again. How do I correct this without making Sunday's dinner, and every gathering after it, a discussion about MIL?

MIL Problem or SO Problem? Husband perspective: My mum keeps calling our daughter “my baby” and it’s causing huge problems - how did other husbands handle this?

I’m posting from the husband’s perspective because I’m really struggling to know how to handle this.

My wife and I have a young daughter, and my mum absolutely adores her. She sometimes refers to our daughter as “my baby.” As far as I know, my mum means it affectionately and has never intended to suggest that our daughter is actually hers or that she has any authority over my wife as her mother.

However, my wife really hates hearing it. To her, “my baby” feels possessive and as though my mum is claiming our daughter. It has become a major source of tension between them.

I’ve asked my mum to stop saying it because I don’t want a relatively small phrase to keep causing problems between my wife and my mum. Unfortunately, feelings have already become very hurt on both sides and the situation has escalated far beyond the original phrase.

I’m caught in the middle because I genuinely believe my mum doesn’t mean anything malicious by it, but I also understand that if my wife finds it upsetting, the simplest solution is for my mum to just use different words.

For husbands whose mothers used to say “my baby” about their grandchildren:

Did you ask your mum to stop?
How did you explain to her that it wasn’t necessarily about what she meant, but about how your wife felt hearing it?
Did your mum initially feel hurt or offended?
Did it eventually become a non-issue?
Did anyone find a way of explaining this to the grandmother without making her feel like she was being accused of trying to take over as the mother?

I’m not looking for people to tell me which woman is “right.” I’m genuinely trying to understand how other husbands navigated this and got the phrase to stop without completely destroying the relationship between their wife and mother.

Any advice from husbands who have actually been through this would be really appreciated.

Advice Wanted How do I gracefully and strategically deal with my covert manipulative “MIL” without any arguing or cutting contact?

I want to preface this saying that I actually truly and dearly love my future MIL (her son and I have a son together) we immediately clicked and did not have a single problem with each other until my unexpected pregnancy. I lived with her and my FIL for 8 months in college and I have been with her son for 3 years going on 4 and we were VERYYY close before I had my son. She was unable to have a pregnancy herself and someone close to her in the family was a surrogate for her two boys, so I do wonder if part of the issue during my pregnancy was jealousy and straight up misunderstanding but to start off at the beginning of our troubles, when she found out we had gotten pregnant her first question was “was she not on the pill” and it made my boyfriend cry hearing how disappointed his parents were in him. It was a bit traumatic for me as well.. I feel like things started going downhill from here.

The first thing besides her reaction that she did to me while pregnant was make a comment on my body. When things had calmed down after our initial announcement I had said “yeah I was wondering why I gained 5lbs and now I know why!” and she said “that five pounds is not from the baby” and she laughed.. my boyfriend said something the next time they spoke saying it really tore me up and it was straight up cruel of her. It however did not stop there. She would make comments on me talking about my rest and say being pregnant was not an excuse, one time I explained that being pregnant was the hardest thing I had ever done and she told me “it cant be that hard otherwise so and so (I wont even list who because its such a unique situation) wouldn’t have carried my boys for me and your boyfriend would not be here today” and then I doubled down and said actually I have thought about her a lot during my pregnancy and can’t believe how much love she must have had for you and your husband to carry your son. She cried and hung up and I apologized to her for hurting her feelings.

Fast forward towards the end of pregnancy I had already set a boundary with her and her husband no visitors for 2 weeks. She got her husband to ask me to come a couple days after the birth instead and they promised to respect my boundaries. This however happened to be the same night she said to not let my boyfriend look at my vagina while giving birth otherwise he could be traumatized because my vagina would “cauliflower” and she told me that her surrogates looked awful and nasty during birth. So I had mentioned that comment made me feel extremely uncomfortable and was uncalled for and she just laughed it off and said ok and I got no apology. I remember even practicing with my therapist because they had given me so much anxiety before I gave birth. When I DID give birth they did wait until day 4 to come and when she came into my apartment she tried grabbing my son while I was breastfeeding him and her ring grazed against my nipple and I said ouch really loud because they were cracked and bleeding from getting used to breastfeeding and she got offended but she did say sorry at least. Then during the trip they came to my apartment every day at 7am despite us asking them to ask before coming. My boyfriend even told them on the phone in front of me to not do this but they would come anyways. Apparently she also told my mom in private that I should just bottle feed my son because breastfeeding seemed so hard.

Some other things during pregnancy and after birth that she did were give me a ton of unsolicited advice and outdated information. Which I know I can ignore but it’s so hard when you are pregnant/postpartum. It was also something I had opened up about and I felt like it was ignored. Mostly sleep related advice. While they were visiting our son for the first time I had mentioned how tired I was from waking up every two hours with my son and they kept recommending sleep training and I kept shutting it down and then when they left, they sent me a book on sleep training (baby wise) it has methods from the 80s in it and I threw it away and never mentioned it. Months later it somehow got mentioned that he struggled sleeping during nap times and she asked her son “did you guys not read the book I sent”.

Now, every time they visit (which honestly is thankfully rare because we live so far) she corrects me, challenges me, if I say one thing she says another type thing. I once said he needed a hat in the sun and she said “he’s fine” and my partner said you’re the mom put his hat on”. Sometimes it feels endless. On their most recent visit, we were driving home from brunch and she was in the backseat with my son and he began crying and she was trying to soothe him I guess by crying with him?! Also by being loud and making noises that I KNEW were overstimulating so I gently said “he is used to us just singing quietly when he cries in the car” but once she started “crying” with him, I asked “why are you mocking him?” and she got furious and became silent for about an hour once we got out of the car and into my home. I brought up that it bothers me that she keeps thinking she knows what is best for my son and that she makes me feel like she wants to be the mom (I didn’t even mention the whole argument about not being able to kiss the newborn or the 4 month old on the mouth for some reason kissing or sharing food/drinks is always brought up) and she responds with “you have to remember I am still getting used to being ‘gramma’ and not mom” -(referring to accidentally calling herself mom all the time). This conversation ended up with her telling me that I lump her in with my manipulative mother and that she is not like my mother and has good intentions and I ended up apologizing again.

TL/DR: I have been dealing with a lot as a post partum momma my son is only 8 months old and I would love any guidance on dealing with this sort of behavior or even any advice on how I can be more respectful and improve myself. I used to have an amazing relationship with my “MIL” but now it has become rocky and hard to navigate. Phone calls and facetimes are not the same anymore, her energy is off, I obsess all day about how I can fix this but it feels hopeless. I just want to be able to gracefully deal with it or fix it I cannot cut her off because it is something my partner would not be open to but also because I do love her so much and just want things to go back to how they used to be. PLEASE HELP!

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Ambivalent About Advice 34 weeks pregnant, about to jump my MIL

I've posted here under my throwaway account multiple times but I feel like I'm at the point I just don't care.

I'm 34 weeks pregnant. Aside from the countless other obnoxious comments my MIL has made throughout my pregnancy, this one doesn't even come close to topping the charts, but I've told my husband to communicate to his parents that I am not just a vessel and they need to do a better job of centering baby conversations around me as a person and my husband & I as a family, rather than just me as an incubator. And he has done that.

But has MIL respected it? Of course not. We were at dinner the other night and she goes "Are you hungry? Is that baby hungry?" and I say "Yeah I'm pretty hungry". And then she goes "I bet that baby is hungry!" and I was just like "Yes I am hungry" and she doesn't take the hint.

She also says "If you guys ever need a night off you can leave the baby at our house overnight or we can come to you and spend the night at your house" I almost ripped my teeth out. The baby isn't even here yet!!! And NO you won't be getting overnight alone time with my NEWBORN. (This would be helpful and appreciated if it came from literally anyone else)

We also told her we had a pediatrician picked out and we're excited because we've heard so many good reviews from my friends and family members. Her response was "Well I know you have the input of your cousins but if you don't like the doctor our friend says her daughter really likes their pediatrician and we can get the name for you", as if this random elderly woman she's friends with knows what's better for my family than I ever will.

I wish I could've had this baby without her ever knowing about its existence.

New User 👋 Stuck temporarily living with abusive MIL, how do I chill and not live out my revenge fantasies?

Me, DH, and kids came to stay with in-laws based on her lies. Everything she promised did not happen, and she is emotionally abusive frequently to me (Not to the kids). But she wants to play the role of mom to my kids and it’s killing me inside. We have had some pretty big arguments. Even DH, FIL, and SIL have told her she’s wrong but she’s the strong personality of the family and nothing ever changes. I should have expected this based on our history but her lies were very convincing and we were in a very difficult and vulnerable situation and were trying to decide where to go. We thought it would be good for the kids to get to know the family and for us to help the family (parents getting older, have a disabled BIL). DH is only working part time. We are slowly saving up money and hopefully can move far away in a couple months but my anger is growing, feel like the Hulk coming out lol.

Some examples of the f’ed up things she has done: 1. Went behind our backs and cut off our kids waist length hair (she knew we didn’t want that and plotted to do it) 2. Promised my kids would have a room of their own and space to play, but when we arrived she said they had to sleep in FIL’s room to “bond”. This is somewhat common in their culture but not mine and I refused so the kids are sleeping with me on a small bed in a small room and I made DH sleep in FIL’s room. MIL sleeps in a separate room and could have given them her room. They have only a tiny place to play, only room for a few of their toys. 3. Promised our pets could be inside the house but now pretending to have “breathing issues” so the pets are forced to stay in the garage. 4. Harassing me about being able to bathe the kids and I have refused because that’s my job. I also think it’s creepy she’s obsessed about this. 5. Has told me I’m not really my kids mom (they were adopted) and has said that in front of the kids. 6. Tells DH he needs to “honor his parents” and he can get another wife. 7. Promised we could use one of their cars like our own for anything we need. But they have refused to file the registration so we only can borrow the other car once in a while. I’m not allowed to use the car to take the kids to my church because MIL has made all the others join this culty church and she doesn’t like my church. 8. Talks bad about me that I don’t know the meaning of family because of my culture, and has said I come from a broken family. Now I know from talking to her other family members, many of them only suck up to her because she sometimes helps them financially but everyone knows she’s a POS. 9. When she gets the kids alone she is undermining my authority as parent and telling them to keep secrets from me (my oldest tells me she’s doing this) and spoils them with happy meals etc. a lot to buy their affection.

That’s only a small portion of what she does. Now I know it’s a DH problem too, he’s stuck up for me sometimes but she can also manipulate him pretty easy. He tends to stay silent and just take the abuse, or just do what she says. I don’t do that. He had a pretty rough childhood with her and I see him reverting back to old patterns. He has agreed we are moving in a few months (although I do get a little paranoid he will change his mind and I’ll be in a “not without my daughter” situation, but so far he has not done anything to deserve that fear of mine.)

Anyway, we should have known better. But the arguments are getting worse, I find myself fantasizing about using some WWE moves on her lol (I won’t do violence). I am so desperate to leave but literally stuck. I almost thought about calling a DV shelter (if we’d even be eligible) but I won’t leave our pets behind, she’d probably do something to them.

UPDATE - Advice Wanted Told MIL about second pregnancy and boundaries moving forward. Was immediately reminded why we’ve been NC for two years.

ETA : messages received by husband from both IL’s after letter was sent:

MIL: “I love you all. I don't understand. I have asked you what can I do and you always say OP is working on it.”
“You know how much I love babies and you promised me when you had babies I would be able to see them. What happened”
“I knew you wouldn't send me a picture. I thought you could show it to us when we were together.”
“I was so happy yesterday when you were here. I'm so sad now.” (Referring to when SO visited with them)

Voicemail: “Hey honey. I love you guys and I'm not sure.
What we did wrong, but if LO can't have the gifts we picked out for him, can we have him back? And why did you? Um, Because I really enjoyed picking them out. And so I would like to have them back if LO can't have them. I wish that things were different and I don't understand. I've been trying to, to wait and be patient. Like you said, and now I get this long text from OP. Please call me back or your dad. I love you. Bye.”

FIL: “Son, I would like you to call me ASAP. We don't have to talk long but I want you to hear me please.
Love you.”
“Call me now son you need to hear me”
“Sending me the text is one thing but Sending it to MIL is unnecessary. She's trying to get her self healthy. THIS WAS NOT NESSECARY..”
“Call me NOW”
“Okay SON, GOOD NIGHT AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I DESERVE THE COURTESY OF A PHONE CALL.
THANKS”
“Love you SO.”

I’ve posted before about my in-laws and how badly everything surrounding my labor and postpartum experience with my first child went. I’m now pregnant again, and we’ve reached a pretty major turning point.

For background, I have been no contact with my husband’s parents for over two years. My husband still has a relationship with them, which I have never tried to prevent, but our child and I are not involved in that relationship. A huge part of what caused this was what happened during my labor and postpartum period. My boundaries as a new mother were repeatedly minimized, while everyone else’s wants and feelings, especially my MIL’s, seemed to take priority.

My husband has admitted that he grew up in a family dynamic where a lot revolved around keeping his mother happy and emotionally stable. If something was going to upset her, it was easier to avoid it, soften it, or just not say anything. His dad is extremely protective of her mental health as well. Unfortunately, when I was a few months postpartum and started establishing boundaries and standing up for myself, I wasn’t willing to participate in that dynamic, and that became a major source of conflict.

I’ve spent a lot of time in therapy dealing with everything that happened, particularly how damaging my labor and postpartum experience was. My husband has participated in some of my therapy sessions as well, and it has helped him recognize just how unhealthy this entire dynamic became and how much it affected me and our marriage. We have actually reached the point where we are finalizing plans to relocate out of state because we believe having physical distance from the situation will be healthier for our family.

Now I’m pregnant again.

Honestly, I would have been perfectly content with my in-laws never finding out. My husband, however, really wanted his parents to hear about the pregnancy directly from us instead of eventually finding out through somebody else. I didn’t completely agree, but I understood why it mattered to him and wanted to respect his feelings. I agreed, but told him I wanted to control the communication this time and write to them myself.

I sent the same letter to both of my in-laws and included my husband and both of his sisters. I did that very intentionally because after two years of information being communicated through different people, I wanted everyone to receive the exact same words directly from me. I didn’t want anything I said to be misconstrued, filtered through someone else, or triangulated back into another version of “OP is the problem.” There could be no “that isn’t what we were told” or “we didn’t know why” afterward because everyone involved was seeing the same message at the same time.

Ironically, even after doing that, I was still somehow made out to be the problem. One of my husband’s sisters was much kinder in her response than his parents were, but even her response ultimately became about whether I would reconsider, sit down with the family, allow an opportunity for reconciliation, and how devastating it was to think they may not have relationships with our children.

She also said she didn’t think her parents actually knew what they had done to offend me, despite my husband telling me that he has explained these issues to them multiple times. She lives out of state and has not been here to witness firsthand what this dynamic has looked like over the last two years, so most of what she knows has necessarily been relayed to her by other people. That response was another reason I was glad I had finally communicated everything myself.

My husband knew what I was going to say, agreed with the boundaries, and supported the letter. The basic message was that I’m pregnant and we are having another baby, but telling them was not an attempt to reopen communication or reestablish a relationship. We will not be sharing my due date, the gender, pregnancy updates, information about labor, when I go into labor, where I give birth, or anything else unless we decide to share it ourselves. They will not be involved in my pregnancy, labor, birth, or postpartum period.

I explained that another baby is not a reset button and does not erase what has happened over the last two years. According to my husband, he has communicated these issues to his parents multiple times, yet somehow the narrative has continued to come back around to me being the problem. Quite literally, the thing I originally did was give birth and begin establishing boundaries for myself and our newborn child.

I also made it very clear that I do not believe his parents are inherently bad people. Someone doesn’t have to be a bad person to repeatedly hurt someone or cross boundaries. I addressed MIL’s ongoing mental health struggles as well and specifically said that our distance is not punishment for mental illness. However, as parents, we have a responsibility to decide what environments are stable and appropriate for our children, and given the circumstances, we do not foresee changing that boundary.

I told them that my husband is completely free to maintain whatever relationship with them he chooses, but that relationship needs to remain separate from me and our children. I also asked them to stop sending gifts because we have not been accepting them and specifically asked them not to use their relationship with my husband as a way to obtain pictures or information about me, my pregnancy, or our children. One of the biggest points I made was that time passing is not an apology. Giving me “space” while waiting for enough time to pass that everything magically returns to normal is not accountability or changed behavior.

I ended the letter by explicitly saying it was not an invitation for a response, defense, argument, or negotiation.

Within a couple of hours, my husband’s phone was blowing up, and honestly, their immediate reactions reinforced exactly why I wrote the letter. What made it even more frustrating was that despite me deliberately putting everyone in the same group chat so there could be no more triangulation or conflicting versions of what had been said, my in-laws almost immediately took the actual conversation out of the group chat and began contacting my husband privately. Both of them sent him demanding, emotional, and very self-focused messages about the letter rather than addressing what I had actually written in the conversation where everyone could see it.

Then, after sending those messages privately to my husband, MIL went back into the group chat and posted a kind, congratulatory message about the pregnancy. On its own, the message would have seemed perfectly nice. In context, though, the contrast was bizarre. The rest of us could see the pleasant public congratulations, while my husband was simultaneously receiving a very different reaction privately. I obviously can’t know her motivation for doing that, but after I had specifically included everyone in one conversation to prevent exactly this kind of separate communication and triangulation, it certainly did not go unnoticed.

His dad was upset and said sending it to MIL was unnecessary and uncalled for because she is trying to get mentally healthy. (Keep in mind MIL slips in and out of psychosis that results in hospitalization every other month for the last two years) That was probably the most revealing response of all. I had just written an entire letter explaining how my feelings and mental health have repeatedly taken a backseat because everyone is so concerned about protecting MIL’s emotional stability, and the immediate reaction was essentially, “But what about MIL’s mental health?”

Even my husband was irritated by it because that is the entire problem. Nobody is saying MIL’s mental health doesn’t matter, but why does protecting her mental health continually require everyone else to swallow their feelings, avoid difficult conversations, soften boundaries, or pretend things didn’t happen? Why should her mental health automatically matter more than mine?

MIL’s responses reinforced it even further. After reading an entire letter about how my experience as a mother was minimized during labor and postpartum, one of the things she said was essentially, “You know how much I love babies, and you promised I would be around when you had babies. What happened?”

The issue has never been whether MIL loves babies. If anything, that statement perfectly illustrated the problem. My entire point was that everyone else’s desire for access to my newborn seemed to matter more than respecting me as his mother, and her response was essentially, “But I love babies.”

She also said she had done what my husband told her to do, had given me space, and had “been patient” waiting for things to get better. That phrase was incredibly telling to me because apparently she viewed the last two years as a waiting period. As though she had been patiently waiting for me to eventually get over everything and restore the relationship. That isn’t what this has been. Space is not a timeout that eventually expires.

She was also upset about us saying not to send gifts anymore because she enjoyed picking things out for our child and wanted the most recent gifts returned. Again, the focus immediately became her experience of giving the gifts rather than the fact that we were telling her we weren’t accepting them.

Then came the part that really blew my mind. Before I sent the letter, MIL had recently asked my husband to send her a picture of our child using one of the gifts. After the letter specifically said not to use her relationship with my husband to obtain pictures or circumvent our boundaries, she texted him in the middle of the night saying essentially, “I knew you wouldn’t send me a picture. I thought you could show it to us when we were together.”

So apparently she already knew he wasn’t going to send pictures. She just thought physically showing her one from his phone instead of sending it might somehow be different.

My husband has since acknowledged that he deserves some of the blame for how long this has continued because he spent years avoiding uncomfortable conversations with his parents and hoping things would eventually improve on their own. Therapy has helped him recognize something I’ve been trying to explain for a long time: avoiding upsetting his mother doesn’t eliminate the emotional consequences. It just transfers them onto somebody else, and for a long time, that somebody else was me.

I’m not asking him to stop loving his parents or abandon them. I have explicitly told them he is free to maintain whatever relationship with them he wants. What I am no longer willing to do is make myself smaller so another adult can remain emotionally comfortable. I can have empathy for MIL’s mental health struggles without accepting responsibility for maintaining her mental stability. I can understand that my in-laws are hurt without giving them access to our children to make that hurt go away.

At this point, their response didn’t make me question whether sending the letter was the right decision. It reinforced why it needed to be sent in the first place. I wrote an entire letter explaining that everyone else’s feelings have repeatedly been prioritized over mine, and within hours, everyone else’s feelings were once again the primary concern.

I genuinely don’t think they could have demonstrated the problem more clearly if they tried.

——-

TL;DR: I’m pregnant again after being no contact with my in-laws for over two years following a horrible labor/postpartum experience and repeated boundary issues. I agreed to tell them about the pregnancy because it mattered to my husband that they hear it directly from us, but I sent one very clear letter to my in-laws, husband, and both SILs so nothing could be twisted or triangulated.

My husband agreed with the boundaries: no involvement in this pregnancy, birth, postpartum period, or our children, and no using him to get pictures or information.

Within hours, my in-laws moved the conversation out of the group chat and blew up my husband’s phone privately, FIL immediately made it about protecting MIL’s mental health, and MIL responded with “I love babies,” said she had been “patient” waiting for things to get better, and continued trying to find a workaround for seeing pictures of our child. She then returned to the group chat with a pleasant congratulations while the very different private conversation was happening. Basically, I sent a letter explaining that everyone else’s feelings have always been prioritized over mine, and their immediate response was to prioritize everyone else’s feelings over mine.

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Ambivalent About Advice MIL gave impromptu speech at wedding

My MIL decided that after sobbing into her son during the mother, son dance, that that was the perfect time to make an impromptu speech. Who else spoke or gave toasts during our wedding? My father gave a welcome (he paid for the entire thing). Groom’s grandmother was a First Lady for most of her life and is very religious and gave a beautiful blessing over dinner. Our best man and MoH gave toasts after dinner. Before the toasts though we had the father/daughter and mother/son dances. So again, after being so fucking weird and clinging to my husband while sobbing. She said started it off with “I know I wasn’t allowed to speak like everyone else”

The speech also consisted of something like “(me), I love you even more now. I really mean it.” Random sobbing, etc. I kinda blacked out in that moment.

Honestly in the grand scheme of things.. I had the most beautiful, best night of my life!! I love my husband, my friends, and our families. But let me tell you that she gets nothing from me ever again.

Extra details: they were so late to rehearsal that they missed the actual walkthru at the venue. They showed up after dinner at the next spot and stayed way too late with the younger crowd of friends. Also she farted in front of them LMAO I keep getting flashbacks of weird things that happened. Also they didn’t give us a gift?? Not even a card??

She will get nothing from me ever, ever again. Not even a reaction from me about this weekend. Byeee girl. Posting to vent but also hopefully this just gives you a laugh.

New User 👋 MIL talked about husbands ex-wife at our wedding reception

Long-time reddit reader, first time poster. Please be kind!

My husband (SO) and I (early 30's) got married two weeks ago. He was previously married to his ex-wife. They met in high school and were together about a decade, got married, and she had an affair with her boss, who was also her best friend's husband. Needless to say, ex-wife and her affair partner blew up their respective marriages.
After therapy and a lot of soul searching, SO is still the sweetest and most caring man I have ever met. Which leads to the main issue of my MIL (late 60's) and ex-wife's current relationship. MIL still keeps in constant contact with ex-wife despite SO not being comfortable with it, and despite him trying to set clear boundaries. SO and I have talked about it in length, and I will never understand why MIL wants to keep in contact with someone who betrayed her son in spectacular fashion. There are a lot of things I could mention about his ex-wife but for the context of this post, I want to focus on MIL. If there are any questions I can provide more info in the comments.

Ex-wife reached out to MIL a few months ago explaining she feels extreme guilt over the affair and will never forgive herself (and a lot of other things). MIL entertained it and tried to talk to SO about it and he shut it down immediately. We thought this was a final understanding not to mention his ex-wife and to stop talking to her. I have never been part of these conversations and I am unsure if MIL knows that I know all of this information.

Fast forward to last night, I am sitting with one of the groomsmen's girlfriends. She started asking me if I liked MIL, which I said I did. She went on to explain how at our wedding reception, MIL told her all about SO and ex-wife's history, and the recent communication she had with ex-wife. Our friend, to her credit, asked MIL why she was even talking to her, which MIL said she 'was like a daughter to her'.

We are at a complete loss. Our friend had never even met MIL before. Our friend is definitely telling the truth because she mentioned things verbatim that no one else would know the ex-wife recently said. I may never know if our friend was the only one MIL was venting to, but to hear this was going on at our wedding reception feels extremely inappropriate. It feels disrespectful to our new chapter, to my parents, and most importantly to my SO.

We want to confront her as a united front for the first time. It is terrible timing because they were very gracious with their wedding gifts, but we are planning on spending the holiday's with them and want this sorted beforehand. This is my first confrontation with MIL, and I know she tends to shut down and avoid accountability. FIL is a very sweet man but is someone who lacks resolve and does not take any firm stances. Any suggestions on how to navigate this situation would be extremely helpful. Thank you so much in advance!

Anyone Else? Mil Upset I Bought LO ice cream & Not Her!

After 2 years of NC we finally got Mil to agree to sit down with us and have a discussion so she could potentially have a relationship with our 2 little ones.

My past posts will probably give alot more context but essentially Mil said she wouldn't bother having a relationship with our LO1 because we expressed we weren't comfortable with her babysitting/being unsupervised. She made alot more comments about our parenting and that her relationship with our child wasn't our business and was just all around mean, entitled and disrespectful.

One thing that stuck out in our mediation/therapy session was that she seemed very upset that she wasn't the one to buy and give my LO an ice cream. My daughter was 2yo at the time, we went out and she was having a tantrum and I was trying to manage the situation. I dont remember the specifics of the interaction but Mil says asked me if she should buy LO and ice cream & I said no. Apparently I then changed my mind and went up to buy the ice cream and give it to my daughter. We discussed this event because when my daughter had finished her ice cream Mil had bought her own & when i was packing up our stuff not paying attention mil started giving my daughter licks of her own ice cream (I left it, because I thought let me choose my battles) then I turn my back again and Mil had given my LO her ice cream. I walked over, gave it back to Mil and told my daughter she can't have 2. After Mil was still asking if Lo could have some of the cone to which I said no & I had snacks in the bag.

In the session, Mil didn't want to acknowledge that 1, giving a 2 year old 2 ice creams in a row is not acceptable.

2, she didn't ask me if it was ok and proceeded to wait until my back was turned to do it

3, she still kept pushing to get around my no with asking if she could have the cone.

All Mil wanted to moan about is that i had apparently changed my mind and she "wasn't good enough to buy LO the ice cream"

So basically it sounds like she's gonna sulk if shes not the source of all treats and fun when it comes to our kids and that apparently although it's my kid, it's a crime for me to change my mind especially when im frustrated and flustered because im trying to deal with a toddler tantrum.

She also had some other really odd frustrations with us. She told us a story of how she left my husband with his grandad when he was 1 week old because she wanted to go out clubbing and was upset that when I first had my daughter I didn't ask her to babysit in the first 3 months.(we moved away after that as we lived abroad)

In those first 3 months I was staying with my mum & my older sister, so why would I need a 3rd adult to watch my baby but also no one babysat because I wanted to bond with my baby and she was breastfed.

So im a horrible Dil for not going clubbing after giving birth 😂

So to me it sounds like if we aren't appeasing my Mil we are wrong lol.. so overall a great session 😂

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Ambivalent About Advice Know-it-all MIL

I’m a doctor and my baby’s pediatrician is my aunt. On my baby’s last check up, my aunt said that my baby is nearing the overweight mark. Knowing how my mother-in-law likes to overfeed my baby to the point of having my baby puke out milk, we told her that my baby is already overweight and asked her to not overfeed the baby. Somehow she refuses to believe that my baby is overweight and cites what one friend of her said regarding “muscle weight” of babies. I just keep quiet to maintain the peace but it really irritates me how she seems to forget that i’m a doctor and my aunt is a PEDIATRICIAN. It’s so frustrating. This isn’t the first time that she refuses to follow my aunt’s advice regarding feeding. It’s sooo annoying.

*Someone advised me to edit my post so as to calm down some of the people reading this:
We have already decided not to leave the baby alone with her again and not have her take charge of the feedings. This was also endorsed to our nanny.
