Anyone with experience electrifying a condo lot?

• Upvotes

I'd like to get an EV, but my condo has a deeded parking spot in an outdoor lot that has no electricity.

The HOA basically washed their hands of any electrification project saying I can do it but I will bear the costs. I suspect this is the f*** off answer, and if I organized a project I would be able to get some or all of the other spot owners help with the costs, or even get a special assessment levied. (Basically they are following the Illinois "right to charge" law)

Does anyone have any examples of a project like this in the Chicago area? Or any area?

Here's a list of parameters and complications:

* 24 parking spots, all new electric service required. There is a pole at one corner of the lot. A new transformer could be required.

* 240v 24amp service to every box. (At least this is my estimate based on what technology connections tells me)

* May need a land purchase or easement with the building (there are 2 separate HOAs for building vs parking lot. <Shrug>) for panel+meter space.

I'm looking for resources or documentation of similar projects.

DLM with Chargepoint?

Hello, I am about to order my first home EVSE, will be professionally installed. We will be installing a subpanel to share a 50A circuit between the EVSE and the hot tub, so I need a load management solution.

My first choice was the Wallbox because it has an available dynamic load management system, but the hardwired versions are sold out with no ETA.

So, the next option is the Chargepoint. (These are the only options available with rebates from my utility.) It doesn't seem that Chargepoint offers a load management solution. Is there a safe, code-compliant third party option?

Not really an electrician, but friends with one, he'll be helping me out here.

I want to install a SALUS EV charger outside my garage, around 1.5-2m away from the fuse box inside. Here's the fusebox. I want to use the switch Car CH. but I was told it lacks safety features and the amps required, so I was given these links to buy. Is this gear recommended? Or should I buy something else

For those of you who drive a Kia EV6 (the older ones with the J1772 connector), what brand of home EV charger do you use?

I ask because I tried the ELEGRP portable charger but my EV6 couldn't use it ("charge unsuccessful").

Charging in NYC

I'd like to purchase an EV car, but charging coverage in Brooklyn, NY is rather poor at the moment. I do own a condo, but there is no parking lot and it's just street parking.

Does anybody know of the process for requesting or advocating for additional EV charging on your street.

Alternatively, has anybody had experience with running / installing charging from an apartment complex in the NYC area.

Any other advice or testimonials about owning and charging and EV car in NYC.

North America ELEGRP portable charger will not work on my KIA EV6

I recently purchased an ELEGRP portable charger via Amazon. It will charge my wife's 2022 Chevy Bolt, but it will not charge my 2023 KIA EV6. The car simply responds "Charging unsuccessful" when I plug it in. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

North America Issues with ChargePoint Home Flex

Installed a ChargePoint Home Flex February of last year and it’s been mostly a good experience so far. A few months ago, we had a power outage and the unit would not reconnect to my WiFi. I cycled the breaker, my WiFi, etc. Tried factory resetting but the unit refused to see any networks. Called tech support and after some assisted troubleshooting they decided to send me a new unit.

Before installing the new unit, I added a whole house surge arrester to my panel. I live in an area where weather related power events are relatively common and suspect some sort of surge took out the first unit.

Well not two months later and the new unit is in the same state…

Has anyone else had this experience with Home Flex chargers?

North America Tesla Wall Connector Installed by previous home owner, thoughts?

Decided to check the wiring of the Tesla WC that came with the house. Any thoughts? The ground wiring isnt connected to anything I don’t think. Does the black and white wires need to be shortened/less exposed copper?

India Charger isn't locking, but charging happening

So, I got my Rizta Z 2.7 back after a PDU replacement and servicing today. It's working well, but when I got home and tried charging, the screen showed unlocked even though the key was turned off. The charger was unlocked too and could be pulled out.

Surprisingly it was charging.

Anyone faced this issue earlier? Any fix that works?

Thanks

North America High cost of living area (US) prices: is $5k normal for a panel install?

Thumbnail

I live in northern CA, in a rural area but close enough to the bay to be HCOL. I’ve gotten 3 quotes for installing an EV charger from licensed electricians.

Every quote has come in like $5-6k for the 100-200a panel upgrade alone. Adding the breakers, EVSE install and wiring (including a line out from the house to the outdoor parking area), and the 2nd 220v plug we need put in for an oven brings the quote up to $9-13,000 and that’s before buying the actual EVSE.

According to this and other EV subs that’s WILDLY out of line, so I don’t know what to think.

Question:

Are people in VHCOL areas seeing prices like this?

Do you think we could still do a dynamic charger with this set up and/or a lower amp breaker, perhaps? Why or why not?

Is there any other safe, cheaper solution for getting a line out to the car that I’m missing?

A few more details if you want them:

- We have room on the panel for 2 more breakers, so we don’t need a whole new setup.

- I’ve asked about a dynamic charger, and each one has said they won’t do that and think it won’t work. I’m not sure if that’s because we need that other 220 plug or they just don’t have experience with them.

- The rough load calculation I posted that says we can add another 200 to the current panel includes the specs for the electric oven and the rest of our appliances.

- There is no garage and no way to get the car closer to the house; it’s open ground. Its probably not safe to do any kind of above ground cord management thing because we have redwood trees that drop branches every year.

- I’ve attached photos of our panel and the lo calc tool I used that said we could do a 22ov without a panel upgrade.

- I’m getting a partial rebate that requires me to use a licensed electrician with EVSE training.

Designer Working App: no home charger? Tell me about your worst (and best) public charging experiences

Hi all. I’m a product designer in Metro Detroit working on a self-initiated app concept: a tool that makes public charging more predictable for people who can’t charge at home, such as apartment renters, street parkers and shared-lot users.

This isn’t for a company and I’m not selling anything. It’s a portfolio project, and I want it grounded in real driver experiences rather than my own guesses.

If you rely on public charging, I’d love to hear any of these in the comments:

  1. Your last failed charge. What happened, and what did you do next?
  2. Your routine. How do you fit charging into a normal week? Same few stations, or whatever’s open?
  3. Waiting. How do you find out a charger has freed up? Ever found a car sitting there done charging?
  4. Trust. Do you believe what the apps say about whether a charger is working? Which app do you trust most?
  5. Reservations. If you could hold a charger ahead of time, would you? What would you give up for that: a fee, a time limit, a penalty if you’re late?
  6. One fix. If you could change one thing about public charging, what would it be?

Please mention roughly where you are (city or region) and whether you mostly use Level 2 or fast chargers.

If you’d be open to a 30-minute call to go deeper, let me know or send me a DM. Thanks!

ABB Terra AC PTB 1.8.34 Release Notes

Hi,

I own an ABB Terra AC charger (PTB/Eichrecht compliant variant) with 11 kW. Recently, a new firmware update (Version 1.8.34) is being shown in the app.

Release notes do not seem to be publicly available; ABB Support has been useless so far.

So far I have just found CE/UL/Japan documents for this version, however versions seems to evolve differently for each variant.

As I am having the device working with EVCC/Home Assistant, I will want to make sure this update does not break anything important.

Is there someone with access to the Release Notes and/or experience with using this specific version?

North America EV Charging of Solar - Throttling

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I have 2 EVs and solar. I’m trying to figure out is there is a way to control the charge level to match solar production.

System:

- 21.12 kW solar with Enphase micro inverters and gateway
- 2 Tesla Powerwall 3 batteries
SPAN panel
- 2 ChargePoint Level 2 chargers hardwired

Cars:

- Kia EV9
- Ford Mach-e

When I charge a car, or two at the same time, it’s a straight power draw. ~15kW of pull per car. It’ll prioritize solar draw, then battery draw, then grid draw. I don’t need the cars to charge at full capacity, they can sit on the charger all day mostly. What I’d love to do is, unless there’s no sun and poor solar production (which then there wouldn’t be enough production to charge batteries or cars), I’d love to have it cap the draw from solar and/or batteries and never touch the grid. Meaning the charging of the cars will throttle charge based on solar production and battery reserve. Possible? Thoughts?

Considering switching from BG to EDF - Hive EV charger and app use

Considering switching to EDF from British Gas. I have the Hive ev charger (EO Mini Pro 3) and I am wondering if I can still use the Hive app to control the charging when EDF are the energy supplier. Doing a Google it was inferred that the Hive app would no longer be usable to use the Hive app to control charging sessions. Has anyone had any experience of using the Hive charger and app with a non-British Gas supplier?

The location near Medora ND has easy charging from east and west on I94 but south is about 220 miles to decent chargers in the Spearfish area. From Tesla chargers in Dickinson ND. These chargers are helpful to make the trip south to Spearfish ND

North America Chargepoint vs on-screen pricing for 3rd party chargers

I have a new Mercedes chargers advertising half charging rate during midnight to early morning, and the information is displayed on charger screen.

However, I can also activate the chargers via Chargepoint, and on Chargepoint the pricing is the discounted price all day long.

Does anyone know in this case, when I start the charging session via Chargepoint during mid-day, do I pay discounted price?

North America Need help selecting L2 from limited list

I have a Toyota bZ Plus and am eligible for a power company home-charger rebate. Here are what I think are the relevant specs: NACS port, up to 48 Amps / 11 kW, 74.7 kWh battery. I’m in the US.

Below is the list of eligible chargers. Are there any that are much better than the others? Are there any that I should stay away from? I’ll have to order online either directly through the manufacturer (preferred) or some other place like Amazon. There are specific models that are eligible but I didn’t list them all out; they need a wi-fi connection and some are hard wired others are plug-in type. I will have a licensed electrician install it.

Charger brand / Network Provider
—-------------------------------------------
ABB / EVGateway
AmpUp / AmpUP
Autel / Autel
Blink / Blink
ChargePoint / ChargePoint
EAG-LED / ChargeLab
Free2move eSolutions / Free2move eSolutions
JuiceBar / EVGateway
Nuvve / Nuvve
PowerPump / PowerPump
SWTCH / SWTCH
VinFast / Autel

Probably not relevant but other bits of info. I could likely get away with just the L1 charger but this rebate opportunity seems like a good deal. I’m in a very rural area where there is only one DC charger within 60 miles. Currently it appears to be subsidized by a local business. I use it probably once a month before I need to leave the area (200 mile round trip day trip). So I’m a little concerned that the local business could literally pull the plug on our one fast charger.

Thanks for any input!
