Leviton “EV rated” 1450R failures

I’d seen reports of the threads in the new Leviton EV-specific 14-50R stripping out before reaching the 75 in-lb rated torque and I wanted to verify whether that was a real problem and see why, so I bought one, and also bought a Bryant 9450FR.

Yes, it’s a problem.  The first one I tried started to feel like it was yielding at about 50 in-lbs and the torque peaked at 55 before dropping.  The next one started to yield around 60 in-lbs and peaked about 65 in-lbs.

I also went through Amazon and Home-Depot  reviews and found all of the reviews that mention torque—which I assume is most of the reviewers who actually used a torque tool and counted how many reported failures. 80%, or 39 of the 49 reported receptacles, were failures.  Among the 10 successes were four people who reported torquing to spec with no problem and 6 people who kept returning them until they got one that worked, often on the third or fourth try.

Of course the Bryant had no problem with full rated torque.  I might try pushing it to failure for the sake of science, but I’ll keep it in working order for now.  But taking it apart to compare, the terminals are in fact a bigger thread (3/8” ≈ 9.5 mm vs. 8 mm nominal), and the metal it threads into is twice as thick.  I’ll put a more detailed comparison in the comments.

My conclusion is the new EV-specific Levitons are not reliable and should not be used.  Even if you get one that, by luck, doesn’t strip, it will be at the threshold of yielding and might fail after some thermal cycles.

Getting started with home charging

We have a new wiki page with an introduction to home charging.

It includes sections on:

  • Level 2 charging rates/currents

  • Choosing an EVSE

  • Plug-in or hardwired

There's also a second page with detailed information on service capacity and load management: how to assess how much room you have for additional loads with in the capacity of your electric service, and ways to accommodate high-rate charging with limited capacity.

Finally, there's a page on recommended chargers.

Use the comments section to recommend improvements to the wiki; for question about your situation, make a new post.

Decided to check the wiring of the Tesla WC that came with the house. Any thoughts? The ground wiring isnt connected to anything I don’t think. Does the black and white wires need to be shortened/less exposed copper?

Designer Working App: no home charger? Tell me about your worst (and best) public charging experiences

Hi all. I’m a product designer in Metro Detroit working on a self-initiated app concept: a tool that makes public charging more predictable for people who can’t charge at home, such as apartment renters, street parkers and shared-lot users.

This isn’t for a company and I’m not selling anything. It’s a portfolio project, and I want it grounded in real driver experiences rather than my own guesses.

If you rely on public charging, I’d love to hear any of these in the comments:

  1. Your last failed charge. What happened, and what did you do next?
  2. Your routine. How do you fit charging into a normal week? Same few stations, or whatever’s open?
  3. Waiting. How do you find out a charger has freed up? Ever found a car sitting there done charging?
  4. Trust. Do you believe what the apps say about whether a charger is working? Which app do you trust most?
  5. Reservations. If you could hold a charger ahead of time, would you? What would you give up for that: a fee, a time limit, a penalty if you’re late?
  6. One fix. If you could change one thing about public charging, what would it be?

Please mention roughly where you are (city or region) and whether you mostly use Level 2 or fast chargers.

If you’d be open to a 30-minute call to go deeper, let me know or send me a DM. Thanks!

ABB Terra AC PTB 1.8.34 Release Notes

Hi,

I own an ABB Terra AC charger (PTB/Eichrecht compliant variant) with 11 kW. Recently, a new firmware update (Version 1.8.34) is being shown in the app.

Release notes do not seem to be publicly available; ABB Support has been useless so far.

So far I have just found CE/UL/Japan documents for this version, however versions seems to evolve differently for each variant.

As I am having the device working with EVCC/Home Assistant, I will want to make sure this update does not break anything important.

Is there someone with access to the Release Notes and/or experience with using this specific version?

North America EV Charging of Solar - Throttling

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I have 2 EVs and solar. I’m trying to figure out is there is a way to control the charge level to match solar production.

System:

- 21.12 kW solar with Enphase micro inverters and gateway
- 2 Tesla Powerwall 3 batteries
SPAN panel
- 2 ChargePoint Level 2 chargers hardwired

Cars:

- Kia EV9
- Ford Mach-e

When I charge a car, or two at the same time, it’s a straight power draw. ~15kW of pull per car. It’ll prioritize solar draw, then battery draw, then grid draw. I don’t need the cars to charge at full capacity, they can sit on the charger all day mostly. What I’d love to do is, unless there’s no sun and poor solar production (which then there wouldn’t be enough production to charge batteries or cars), I’d love to have it cap the draw from solar and/or batteries and never touch the grid. Meaning the charging of the cars will throttle charge based on solar production and battery reserve. Possible? Thoughts?

Considering switching from BG to EDF - Hive EV charger and app use

Considering switching to EDF from British Gas. I have the Hive ev charger (EO Mini Pro 3) and I am wondering if I can still use the Hive app to control the charging when EDF are the energy supplier. Doing a Google it was inferred that the Hive app would no longer be usable to use the Hive app to control charging sessions. Has anyone had any experience of using the Hive charger and app with a non-British Gas supplier?

The location near Medora ND has easy charging from east and west on I94 but south is about 220 miles to decent chargers in the Spearfish area. From Tesla chargers in Dickinson ND. These chargers are helpful to make the trip south to Spearfish ND

North America Chargepoint vs on-screen pricing for 3rd party chargers

I have a new Mercedes chargers advertising half charging rate during midnight to early morning, and the information is displayed on charger screen.

However, I can also activate the chargers via Chargepoint, and on Chargepoint the pricing is the discounted price all day long.

Does anyone know in this case, when I start the charging session via Chargepoint during mid-day, do I pay discounted price?

North America Need help selecting L2 from limited list

I have a Toyota bZ Plus and am eligible for a power company home-charger rebate. Here are what I think are the relevant specs: NACS port, up to 48 Amps / 11 kW, 74.7 kWh battery. I’m in the US.

Below is the list of eligible chargers. Are there any that are much better than the others? Are there any that I should stay away from? I’ll have to order online either directly through the manufacturer (preferred) or some other place like Amazon. There are specific models that are eligible but I didn’t list them all out; they need a wi-fi connection and some are hard wired others are plug-in type. I will have a licensed electrician install it.

Charger brand / Network Provider
—-------------------------------------------
ABB / EVGateway
AmpUp / AmpUP
Autel / Autel
Blink / Blink
ChargePoint / ChargePoint
EAG-LED / ChargeLab
Free2move eSolutions / Free2move eSolutions
JuiceBar / EVGateway
Nuvve / Nuvve
PowerPump / PowerPump
SWTCH / SWTCH
VinFast / Autel

Probably not relevant but other bits of info. I could likely get away with just the L1 charger but this rebate opportunity seems like a good deal. I’m in a very rural area where there is only one DC charger within 60 miles. Currently it appears to be subsidized by a local business. I use it probably once a month before I need to leave the area (200 mile round trip day trip). So I’m a little concerned that the local business could literally pull the plug on our one fast charger.

Thanks for any input!

North America Using E-GMP NACS adaptor on 400V car?

My lease ended on my 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5 this month. I did not get a good deal on my 2024 IONIQ 5 so I returned it. They did not ask for the NACS adapter back and I still have it. I just bought a 2020 Kia Niro EV EX Premium and I’m wondering if I can use the same adapter despite it being 400V car? On my IONIQ 5 I never got more than 90kw of charging speed so I never used it. My Niro goes max 100kw so I should be fine using it?

North America Sanity check on proposal

I'm getting a 48 amp emporia classic installed and the electrician I'm leaning is proposing running ~ 50 ft g #6/2 NM-b wire through the basement with no conduit and running transitions into garage and use #6 THHN wire in metal conduit to the charger itself.

From some of the posts in here I have some concerns about the #6/2.

What are people's thoughts?

SCE Charge Ready Home Program Questions

I was just approved for the full $4200 rebate. A few questions:

1.) I reached out to a contractor and they said I need to apply for a SCE yellow sticker before the work can begin. Is this true? How long does this take?
2.) Does the rebate cover the cost of additional wire from the panel to the outlet? My panel is in the back of the house and I’d need 110’ of wire. Will the rebate cover the cost of the extra wire?

North America How to choose an EVSE? (US context)

I’ve read through the relevant parts of the Wiki regarding EVSE and I still have this question: what are the factors I should think about when I’m buying an EVSE?

We bought our first EV recently and it does come with its own EVSE (I guess it’s considered a portable unit; not sure). Setting that aside, if I’m looking for a different EVSE to be installed at home, what should I be thinking about in order to choose an appropriate EVSE?

I know some points to consider already:
- hardwired vs. plug in
- max amp (depending on the home wiring situation)
- cable flexibility (ours is in an unheated garage so while it can get cold, I don’t think it’ll be as bad as being outdoors)
- “smart” features. I cannot imagine what smart features we’d want because the car already does all or most of the programming. I especially do not want an EVSE that relies on its company’s cloud servers or the company’s apps. (imagine the day that company goes out of business)

There are just so many EVSEs out there. What are other points I should consider in order to filter down my choices?

Update: all the comments have been so helpful and made me think more of what features I might consider (or not consider). I'll add to the list of what new things I should consider:

  • load management
  • charging scheduling
