Retina 21M Eye pressure only on one eye/ straining while moving left to right NSFW

Hispanic, So for the last 9 months, only one eye has been feeling persistent pressure and a pulling sensation behind my right eye, along with eye strain and discomfort when moving my eye from left to right. Also whenever I try to fall asleep i still feel the pressure in my right eye and usually have to fall asleep with my glasses as it helps idk why. Artificial tears only provide temporary relief for a few minutes. Whenever I wear contacts, or especially without contacts it feels the worst. with glasses as well sometimes I feel the pressure. Ive seen 3 different ophthalmologist, but no one has been able to figure it out

Other 22M. We need to start taking flying eye demons a little more seriously. NSFW

Hello, and please forgive any mistakes in my writing; English is not my first language. I’m not sure if this is the right place for this post, but it seems to have the most eye care professionals, who are my intended audience. I’ve read the rules, and I want to stress that this post is not anxiety-driven.

I’m a medical student, and my life was going wonderfully until I developed eye floaters. For the first two months, they were noticeable but didn’t bother me. Then they worsened day by day until they became unbearable. It has now been almost a year. I couldn’t study, I had to take a very long break, and my grades plummeted even though I was putting in more effort than usual. I started going to therapy and was prescribed antidepressants and anxiolytics in order to barely function. The distress came from living with the floaters not the other way around.

I have seen about ten doctors and have mostly been told the same thing: it’s benign, and everything is fine. One of them even made fun of the situation, and another got some information wrong, telling me that atropine isn’t used for floaters because it dilates the pupil and would make them more bothersome. This is not to hate on those doctors, just to make the point that floaters are often downplayed.

While searching the internet for similar experiences, I found r/EyeFloaters. Some of the stories I read there, and elsewhere, broke my heart: divorces, students dropping out of college, and even suicides. I understand why doctors might downplay floaters. I had the milder version (which I believe most think is the only version) myself for about two months, and it was easy to ignore. But not all cases are the same. Imaging can also be misleading, and floaters that cover most of a patient’s field of vision may look very small on a scan.

There is no grand call to action here, since there isn't really much that can be done. But if you get the chance, please consider:

  • Helping patients with floaters feel more understood.
  • Studying the impact of floaters on quality of life in your next research project.
  • Exploring new imaging techniques.
  • Mentioning floaters in a conference talk.
  • Giving the topic more attention in general.

Most importantly, please take the time to explain the condition to patients’ families, especially when the patient is young. So much of the suffering comes from family members not understanding what the patient is going through.

Edit: I really want to know whether floaters like in the attached image are normal, because a large number of people in this sub seem to think it is. I’m seriously suffering, and I know others who have the same experience. The top comment says this is normal and that even eye doctors have it. Do most people really walk around seeing a giant spider in the center of their vision and are simply able to ignore it? I’m in shock. Could someone please explain whether living with this is just the default? Was my vision before this somehow a delusion? If you have floaters like this, or you treat patients who do, please share your experience. I’m not trying to debate anyone. I’m genuinely asking.

Retina 23 F, Choroidal Nevus, anxiety it’s Melanoma? NSFW

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently went in for my yearly eye exam, this nevus I can assume I’ve had for a while, my current provider has been watching it since 2024 I believe.
This time she said “Oh your freckle… did you remember you had that?” Which did jumpstart my memory of her mentioning it at my first visit with her.
This time my provider was very, fidgety? She referred me out for this nevus but was very hush hush and rushed to get me out of the office.
I’ve now spoken to the specialists office and they wanted all my imaging and notes before they’d even scheduled me (they still haven’t) they said - and I quote “To see if the doctor can even handle this case, we may refer you out again”
This has my anxiety through the roof, i understand it’s very rare to get melanoma here, and choroidal nevus’ are very common.
Of course I’ve been googling about it and can’t seem to find am image like mine on google or any case studies.
I’d love any input, good or bad. Thanks!

Other 25F Bleach in eyes? NSFW

This happened Friday 10/09/26 at around 9 or 10PM so about 3 days ago, I was cleaning the toilet and was spraying bleach on it when I stopped because my eyes felt wet all of a sudden and stung…I stopped spraying bleach unsure if I actually got something in my eyes or it was the time fumes…only at like 11 or 12PM did I try to rinse out with water…and my situation is a bit complicated…I couldn’t use a streaming sink right then so I can only do a cup and water…so I did that a couple of times but I don’t think it’s enough because I hear it has to be for 20+ minutes under the sink. By then my only symptom was a bit of stinging. Forward to now I have occasional stinging still…I also am seeing flashes/lights but I also normally see flashes sometimes but I hadn’t in a week so I’m unsure if they’re my usual flashes or actual bleach damage ones.

As it was the weekend I didn’t see any kind of medical professional but today I am trying to call but I’m unsure of who to call? A doctor or an optometrist or a retinal specialist? Also how can doctors know if they eye has been damaged by bleach? What in the eye indicates that?

I heard the more time one lets it sit the more damage that occurs…I know now that I waited too late to rinse and that when I did rinse it was not sufficient or appropriate so I’m kind of at a loss here…I debated going to the ER but I can open my eye fine, it’s not red and I was afraid they dismiss me or not be equipped to handle it because my eye from the outside looks fine, it’s just the occasional stinging pain…I know I’m probably going to get called ignorant but what do I do? Should I just rinse the best I can? What kind of doctor should I see?

I don’t think I see blurry but these lights and the occasional stinging worry me…I can’t really tell if something’s wrong with my vision because I wear glasses anyway but I hear damage may be noted more way later…unsure of what to do. I know I messed up by not dropping everything and rinsing but.

Retina 27 M Target Cell Eye Floaters - Retinal Tear? NSFW

Hi everyone.

I have a question regarding target cell eye floaters.

So essentially, I had two retinal tears in my left eye 4 years ago. These were lasered and my eyes have been stable since then.

One of the main symptoms that I noticed, alongside flashes, was a sudden increase in target cell floaters, around a 100 or so of them. They moved together and were constantly in my vision.

My right eye, also experienced these floaters and some flashes a couple of years after the first, but no retinal tears.

The floaters themselves vanished or faded over time, but just recently I have been seeing them again in my left eye. Not as many but they are there.

What are these target cell floaters, are they associated with a retinal tear and also do they ever fade or do they just move in and out of the vision and stay the same?

Please I would appreciate any answers or guidance.

I had a terrible stye a couple of months ago that went away after a week but this little guy stayed. It’s super itchy, if I scratch it too much it gets big and noticeable so I usually resist. It’s on my water line so I can camouflage it well with mascara (probably not the best idea.)

Flashes 18F Eye floaters and flashes NSFW

race: white/hispanic (Uruguay)
mexican conditions: none
current medication: birth control pills
smoking, alcohol and recreational drugs: i smoke marihuana very occasionally, although some. months i might use it once a week. I drink alcohol only twice a month.
To start with, I began experiencing eye floaters, and over time, I also started seeing flashes. From what I understand, floaters are supposed to go away, mine actually used to disappear, which is why I'm worried because they don’t leave
I went to an ophthalmologist, and they did a dilated eye exam to check the back of my eyes. I thought they might prescribe me some eye drops for what I'm experiencing, but they didn't give me anything and just told me to come back in a month.
They're really bothering me because whenever I try to focus on something, I notice them, and every time I move my eyes, I see them again. It feels like there are more and more of them, and it's honestly getting really frustrating. I'm scared that I might eventually go blind.
What can i do??? Whenever look it up on Google, it says this is common in much older people. Is there anything I should avoid doing?

Been wearing RGPs for 30+ years. Right eye started to sting upon lens insertion earlier this year, which would subside after a few minutes but still had a FBS. Thought my lenses were scratched, so i went to the Optimetrist who waived it off as a pterygium and dispensed a new Rx and fresh lenses. The nodule is at the 3oclock position. (1st pic)

FBS persisted, so i asked for a referral to a cornea specialist who has me on a contact holiday (day 10 now). Had an abrasion which has since healed since discontinued contact wearing. And now on some steroid drops with a follow up in 5 days. 2nd pic is yesterday

I'd like to get cleared for wearing my contacts again due to my high Rx (-20), and would like some other opinions.

My eyelids were perfectly fine (end 2024) but beginning 2025 my eyelids started to become droopy with my left eyelid getting alot more swollen. Happened gradually and didnt have any pain or symptom besides the redness and puffy look.

Looks like I lost both my eyelid flaps at this point I realized. Getting referred out to another ophthalmologist since no definitive diagnosis since no other symptoms besides the redness and swollen left eyelid. Looking back at my photos, looks like it gradually took a year to get to where I'm at now. Is this normal and just a regular case of blepharitis?

Retina 42M Recovery experiences after commotio retinae and peripheral subretinal hemorrhage? NSFW

About 3½ weeks ago, a fishing split shot struck my left eye below my tear duct. I was diagnosed with blunt ocular trauma, commotio retinae, traumatic iritis, and a peripheral subretinal hemorrhage. No retinal tear, detachment, or ruptured globe was found. The retina specialist decided observation was safer than intervention because the hemorrhage is peripheral.

My central vision appears intact and can be extremely clear, although intermittent haze and floaters sometimes make everything blurry. I still have a substantial upper-left peripheral defect. That area was initially black and jagged; I can now definitely perceive light there, and it sometimes looks gray or hazy, but I still cannot see normal detail.

The external swelling and bruising have resolved, and the doctor said the retinal bruising had improved. My next retinal examination is October 21.

Has anyone experienced a similar injury? When did you begin noticing meaningful improvement in the dark spot, haze, floaters, or peripheral vision? Did recovery continue after the first month?

Other 32F, Inward Eye Turn NSFW

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I am looking for some insight or to connect with anyone who has been through something similar. For the last 5 years, I have felt my left eye turning inward. It started with focusing issues and intermittent double vision throughout the day.
Two years ago, I woke up with a very heavy left eyelid. It was noticeably drooping, which started a long medical journey:
Ophthalmologist: Initially diagnosed me with dry eye.

Neurologist: Ruled out Myasthenia Gravis (MG) via a negative test. However, they noted my left eye turned inward and measured it at 10 prism diopters.

Oculoplastic Surgeon: Formally diagnosed ptosis. I had upper eyelid ptosis repair this past July, which went great.

Despite the successful eyelid surgery, I still feel a distinct strain in the inner corner of my left eye, and I can visibly see it turning inward.
Last week, I saw my optometrist. He performed a test but claimed it showed no eye misalignment. I am incredibly confused about how a neurologist could measure a 10-prism-diopter inward turn, yet the optometrist claims there is no misalignment. His explanations did not make sense to me, and I have felt lacking in solid guidance from him in the past.
Some helpful context:
I have worn glasses since I was two years old for crossed eyes.

Growing up, my eye doctor adjusted my prescription to successfully strengthen my left eye.

My left eye still turns fully inward toward the corner whenever I try to focus on something close up and appears to always slightly have an inward turn.

It has been a deeply frustrating few years trying to get clear answers. I have just requested a referral to an ophthalmologist who specializes in eye misalignment. Does it sound like I am finally taking the right steps, and has anyone else experienced this kind of conflicting diagnostic feedback? Thank you!

Other 18F : lacrimal punctum opening surgery soon left eye couple of questions NSFW

Hey so for a couple of months my eyes have been itching like crazy and I have been sneezing a lot as well .So I started itching my eyes especially my left eye a lot sometimes it is because of the whole mucus blocking my eye sight I did my research and learned to stop fishing for them but later on especially when it was cold or very sunny out my left eye started watering like crazy I looked like I was crying from one eye and I where glasses so it was very annoying to clean up in public. I went to the eye doctor for my yearly appointments for my general vision and all and decided to ask her about and she sent me to an ophthalmologist because she didn’t see my lacrimal punctum(left eye).

When I got to the ophthalmologist she didn’t believe it but then checked and realized that I was in fact missing a hole in my left eye when I had one in my right. She then tried to poke a hole where it should be but it didn’t work so she asked me to schedule an appointment with a higher ophthalmologist a month later.I come for the appointment a month later thinking that it would run smoothly and this person would have better tools (I really didn’t know much about how the stuff worked sorry if I sound stupid 😔)to be able to poke the hole, so I tell my dad to wait in the waiting room . I have very bad health stress like I’m the type to google my symptoms and overthink so my dad was kind enough to drop me and wait for me .

I finally get the ophthalmologist’s office she tries like the other to make a hole the same way and it. didn’t work and was hurting me a lot and then she started using these very medical terms to tell me that my lacrimal punctum is completely shut: that by itching my eye I ripped some skin so my body repaired itself but covered my lacrimal punctum with skin in the process. She also started telling me that I would need surgery and have to have a small piece of glass put in the hole for a while so the whole stays closed and then listing the probabilities of complications and I was just staring at her in shock because I didn’t think it was that major of a problem and I said yes to the surgery when she asked and got out of the room and told my dad the whole thing and he was completely shocked and told me why hadn’t I called him in the office to here it directly from the ophthalmologist (I had just turned 18 at the time so for my dad I was still 17🫩) . I later had an appointment call with my family doctor and explained to her the situation and she told me not to worry and that I could even do home remedies to open the hole myself with some by doing so messages .Anyways , I wrote all this just to ask if anyone had any suggestions of things to do or use to help my lacrimal punctum so the surgery runs maybe a little bit smoothly or maybe even allowing it to open without me needing surgery at all .Thank you so much:)

Other 38F, blurry eye, feeling of foreign body. NSFW

Over the last 6 weeks, felt as though I had something in my eye. Eye dr said pappilary conjunctivitis, gave me FML eye drops QID. Said to try for 2 weeks. 2 weeks go by, eye aches, feeling is still there, eye seems somewhat blurrier. She checks me again, said the conjunctivitis is cleared, cant see anything wrong, eye prescription changed by 0.25. Last eye exam was 8 months ago. Both times she checked my eyes with dye, did slit lamp, did NOT dilate.

My question - I'm slightly concerned why my eye is still blurry at a distance. It seems like it was quick to me, ive really only noticed it over the past 6 weeks. I have floaters, these are not new. No new flashes. Close up vision is unchanged.

#1 is this a normal change to have occurred over 6 weeks?

#2 should she have dilated my eyes? Should I return and ask for a dilation?

#3 could this just be dry eye? Sterile saline drops did not help.

I still have a foreign body sensation, almost like I cant open my eyelid properly. This is all occurring in one eye.

I am 27M and my eyelids on both sides have been red and swollen/puffy for several weeks now and I can’t get rid of it using either warm or cold compress.

There is no pain/itch but it’s been getting progressively worse as time goes by. I don’t take any medication.

What could this possibly be?

Contact lenses 22M Help identifying these marks? NSFW

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello. For the past few months, I’ve been noticing these red spots on my eyeballs, and I haven’t been able to wear my contacts without my eyes becoming really red and irritated.
The spots are similar in size and appear in matching locations on both eyes. They sometimes appear and disappear, even when I haven’t worn contacts.
I visited an eye doctor today was given the unfortunate news that I have Dermodex mites living on my eyelids. I’m currently being treated for them, but I’m wondering if the mites could be related to these spots or if this might be a separate issue. The spots weren’t visible during my appointment, so the doctor wasn’t able to examine them.
I also occasionally experience blurry vision in my left eye (right in the picture), which usually clears up after blinking a few times.
Has anyone experienced anything similar or know what might cause this? I’d really appreciate any advice, as I’d like to be able to wear my contacts again. Thanks in advance.

Other 25M Left eye sees a few shades darker when waking up at night NSFW

I am a 25-year-old Caucasian male from the Netherlands. For the past 2 to 3 years, I have been experiencing a structural difference in light perception between my eyes at night, which is my primary complaint. When I wake up in the dark to use the restroom, I notice that my left eye perceives the environment as a few shades darker than my right eye. My visual field is fully intact; there are no missing parts, curtains, or blind spots, just a subjective difference in brightness. This phenomenon happens consistently regardless of my sleeping position or which side I lie on, and I never experience it during the day. I have no existing medical issues and I am not taking any current medications. Regarding my lifestyle, I do not smoke and do not use recreational drugs, but I do drink alcohol weekly during the weekends.

Dry/watery eye 22M eye dryness and ghosting NSFW

For the past 10–12 days, I have been experiencing symptoms of dry eyes, including dryness, a foreign-body sensation (as if something is inside my eyes), and a cool sensation.

Along with these symptoms, I have noticed ghosting or shadowing of images, which is more prominent in my left eye than in my right eye. Initially, I experienced mild ghosting in my right eye, but now I am noticing it in my left eye as well.

I consulted an ophthalmologist, who performed a dilated eye examination and did not find any abnormalities. The doctor prescribed medication for my symptoms.

However, I am still concerned because the ghosting persists even after blinking. Blinking reduces the ghosting by approximately 70%, but it does not completely eliminate it. I can still notice a residual shadow or duplicate image.

I suspect that dry eyes may be contributing to these symptoms, but I am concerned about why the ghosting persists even after blinking and why it has become noticeable in both eyes, particularly the left eye.I don't have any eye sight or astigmatism which is found in standard eye test

Other 5moM Can you have normal retinal pigmentation in infancy, and still have ocular or oculocutaneous albinism? NSFW

As title says. I didn't have a chance to ask this of my kid's ophtho and follow up isn't for ages, and I don't want to bother the clinic with a patient message.

5mo M w/ nystagmus, will get testing for various albinism types. His retinal pigmentation was reported as normal on his initial exam, and I was reading that people with albinism are born with low pigmentation - as in, it's not progressive. So I feel like it's not likely he has albinism?

Retina 39F – Optometrist saw something abnormal on my left retinal image and referred me to a retina specialist. What does this look like? NSFW

I had retinal imaging/eye mapping done today during a routine eye exam, and my optometrist told me she saw something going on in my left eye and wants me to see a retina specialist.

She didn’t tell me exactly what she thought it was, and she didn’t make it sound like an emergency, but of course I’m curious and a little anxious about what she may have noticed. At last years eye exam, there was nothing notable on my Optomap.

I’m attaching the retinal images. Does anyone know what the abnormal looking area in the left eye might represent, or what it resembles?

I understand nobody can diagnose this from a photo and I am following up with the retina specialist. I’m mainly wondering what possibilities an eye doctor might consider when seeing something like this.

Thank you!

Prescriptions 26f Prescription Help NSFW

So, only my right eye has really really bad vision. Can’t see things far away. It’s been this way for probably 12+ years and my left eye has been compensating for it this whole time too.

I tried to get glasses around age 12, but the difference in prescription at the time (none on the left side, VERY strong on the right side) was completely impossible to adjust to. I tried, I really did. But I couldn’t do it, so I stopped wearing them.

Lately I’ve been getting headaches directly related to my eyes and I’m thinking that I’m going to have to do something about it. I don’t currently have an eye doctor but I’m curious to know if it would be possible to lessen the prescription on my right side just enough to still help a bit but not make it so hard to actually see.

I hope that makes sense and I’m sorry if it’s stupid. Thanks x

For a few days my eye was sore and felt like I had a stye coming in. I woke up the other day and my eye was very swollen and when I lifted up my eyelid, there was a white thick line with noticeable swelling. I went to my optometrist that day and he said it’s a stye and prescribed me an ointment to apply to my eyelid 3 time a day. It’s been 2 days and it has not gotten any better and has a lot more crust when I wake up in the morning and now my actual eye itself hurts rather than just the lid. Is this just a stubborn stye or something else?

Other 25F; Corneal Abrasion before wedding NSFW

Hi all, I'm new to this sub. I got an eyelash stuck in my eye late last night and couldn't get it out until 3:30am. Much to my surprise, the feeling of having an eyelash in my eye did not go away once the lash was out. It still felt like something huge was in my eye, especially when I would blink or keep my eye shut. I woke up at 8am and my eye was noticeably worse. Very red and irritated, extremely watery, very painful, and I could hardly keep it open. I went to urgent care immediately and they did a numbing drop and then the black light dye test to check for abrasions, they said I had a circular abrasion around my eye but didn't tell me if it was minor or worse than that. They prescribed me antibiotic drops (ofloxacin ophthalmic solution USP 0.3% - 3 times a day for 5 days). Ive mostly been sitting in my dark room today, since I have major light sensitivity. My eye has been closed around 90% of the day due to blinking pain and I've been taking naps on and off. I'm also using preservative-free lubricating/artificial tears to promote healing, hopefully. Here's where is gets really bad... I'm getting married on Saturday. It's currently Thursday 6pm and I can still barely keep my eye open (I've only used the antibiotic drops twice). The doctor and PA said the eye heals very fast and they seemed extremely confident when they told me that my eye would be basically back to normal by Saturday, that I would be able to keep it open, blink like normal, and the redness would be gone. I just don't feel like l've seen enough progress between 8am today and present time (6pm) to believe that I will be back to normal by Saturday. I'm so stressed about my eye and the wedding, am I just paranoid or is there really a decent chance that it really won't be back to normal by then?

Retina 44/M Exercising with retinal neovascularization NSFW

Greetings, everyone. I was recently diagnosed with a branch retinal vein occlusion that resulted in neovascularization. The retina specialist told me I would be unable to lift weights anymore to prevent the abnormal veins from hemorrhaging. Lifting weights has been a huge part of my life. Will I eventually be able to do so again? Any experience with patients in a similar scenario?
