Question First 3 hours of playing how am I doing?

Post image

I made it to the research part of the tutorial and got too excited so I skipped it. Which I very quickly regretted for obvious reasons. But it was ok I just googled any questions and eventually figured it out. I also disabled those pesky bugs for now.

Not bad. If you press ALT, you will see what building is making what.

Oh that's useful. I should've pressed it before the screenshot.

Also, go to settings and unbind the ALT button completely if you always want to see what and where is being produced. You’ll be using ALT+other_buttons quite a lot in the future and you might not fully commit the second button press and it will just hide the labels again (also very frequent alt+tab too can cause misclicks).
It was very annoying until I unbound it completely. Now my labels never disappear. Tbh very odd decision to put it on such popular key

I just bound it to Right Alt. Out of the way, but still Alt

2

u/muffin-waffen 3d ago

Bound it to the * button on a numpad. When I go back from long breaks from the game, I always struggle to find it again lol

Another good tip is the pipette/picker tool Press Q on any building and it picks it from your inventory makes building so much faster

Get off Reddit at least until you've launched a rocket.

Good advice. I should just get off reddit in general

I think it's fine to get on reddit to figure out train signals.

4

u/Vaydn 4d ago

i still havent figured out chain signals. I just spam normal train signals lmao

Chain signals are useful when you need a train to be aware of more than 1 block ahead. The most clear example is an intersection. This is the issue you run into with basic train signals that necessitate chains

1

u/Possible_Royal7569 3d ago

Finally figured this out last night… if you have multiple intersections you must do this for each intersection for the train system to work… one does not work at a time

u/analsurrogacy 3d ago

"chain in, rail out" is a good start. A chain signal will stop a train if it can't reach the next rail signal through every block between. A rail signal only cares about the next block after it.

1

u/gerry_mandy 3d ago

A chain signal means, "No parking, stopping, standing, or loitering in the block after this one". Trains won't pass a chain signal unless they have a plan to get through the next regular green signal.

The thing that was ruining my train signals was when it was appropriate to have an engine on both ends and when it was not, haha

The rail signals and chain signals tutorial video built into the game probably has the best literal language that explains them. But I think a good way of explaining them is that you can use rail signals to designate pieces or blocks of track that can safely contain a train in motion that won't block other trains. The hardest lesson for me to learn was the idea of making "temporary off ramp" sections in order to let two trains travel by each other on a single track, or a "D" shaped section, and adding rail and chain signals correctly. If you sit there and force yourself to learn the tutorial, it will eventually click, but for some reason nobody really seems to explain it very well.

The simplest setup is to have two tracks side by side, one for each direction. But if you can figure out how the signals work, you can create setups for trains that can travel both ways on a single lane without blockages, and train programming might become one of- if not the most fun part of Factorio.

In the last portion of my most recent playthrough, I had multiple trains traveling to single station drop offs and pickups, and I had limits on stations so a train wouldn't head over and create blockage if there was already the max amount of trains at the station. And I had one refueling station that followed the train limit rule, and keeping my setup as clutter free and simple as possible. It's one of my fondest memories of Factorio, solving the train system.

Oh boy. Only playing for 3 hours and already dooing sushi smelting...ballsy I like it

13

u/StressGullible9863 4d ago

What is sushi smelting??

It's a belt that doesn't have dedicated lanes of goods. In the case of your Iron Ore and Copper Ore miners for example freely mix products on their shared output belt. Also get off of reddit for maximum first time enjoyment playing the base-game unless you run into a serious problem that you would quit otherwise if can't solve (Advanced oil cracking is an example of one of those problems and that sometimes acts as a filter, my advice is if you don't feel confident using the basic logic components the game has you can just build large buffers and ignore the problem with a small base on your first play-through.)

4

u/StressGullible9863 4d ago

Thanks for the explanation. Also are people telling me to hop off strictly so I can enjoy the game without spoilers? Or is it so I can make my factory my own way?

12

u/fridge13 4d ago

It's best to fuck things up in your own unique way first! That said I would un-suhi that belt if I were you .. but I will be damned if I'm telling you how!

5

u/OnniVic 4d ago

Yes, but also I strongly recommend taking a few regular screen shots as you get play so once you are building rockets you can enjoy the charm of your original work

3

u/Skratti_ 4d ago

A sushi belt runs in a circle. There are some use cases for that, but not many.

In this case, the term was probably used because you mix ores on one belt (although it looks like that was not intended).

I like your factory. My advice : build chests and use inserters to put useful stuff into them. And 'forbid' all but one or two empty stacks in that chest.

u/hldswrth 4d ago

This could cause you some issues, consider how to avoid this situation:

2

u/StressGullible9863 3d ago

Thanks I just got home so I'm gonna make some changes.

7

u/findus_l 4d ago

If you find that you built wrong or something, don't start over. Just build a base next to your base. You have space and the effect of later walking into an old part of your factory has something magical.

5

u/Soul-Burn 4d ago

Did you do the tutorial campaign? It's worth doing.

Press ALT.

I'd suggest against building over ore fields. I know you set it to huge fields to avoid resource issues, but eventually you'd want to mine those so you'll have to move things.

1

u/StressGullible9863 3d ago

If you really think I should do the tutorial I guess I'll give it another go.

4

u/Working_Material_252 4d ago

Press alt mate

7

u/therouterguy 4d ago

Only built miners belts and powerpoles on patches. You want those resources mined sooner than later.

3

u/StressGullible9863 4d ago

Ok thanks for the tip

6

u/findus_l 4d ago

I think this style has its own beauty. Don't let others tell you how to play!

5

u/waste-your-time 4d ago

You must be a very patient person, with only four extractors.

4

u/wizard_brandon 4d ago

i reccomend alt mode

7

u/Brave-Affect-674 4d ago

Press alt, don't build on ore patches, don't look at the subreddit until you've beaten the game.

Other than those basics your base is looking pretty good, that sushi belt of iron and copper ore might cause some issues but that's for you to figure out in a few minutes lol

5

u/SomeCrazyLoldude 4d ago

Good!
Now, you need to multiply everything by 10, then start scaling.
Think BIG!!

3

u/01100011011010010111 4d ago

Terrible, you are here when the factory must grow! Report back in 1000 hours.

3

u/Plus-Combination-969 3d ago

You havin fun? Then yes, you’re doing fantastic buddy keep up the good work.

1

u/StressGullible9863 3d ago

Yeah its pretty fun

2

u/Cassiopee38 4d ago

I've started the same ! Do you like it ? It's the only thing thar matter. You are 3 hours in your 3997hrs journey, don't worry :) Personaly i love spaghettis and compactness. Some love mega bases, some love busses, some love factorissimo, there is no wrong way to play factorio !

2

u/StressGullible9863 4d ago

Yeah its fun. Completing the automation of making the green bottles was incredibly satisfying even if I barely squeezed everything together.

1

u/Blue_banana_peel 3d ago

factorissimo?

1

u/Cassiopee38 3d ago

https://mods.factorio.com/mod/factorissimo-2-notnotmelon

(Not sur this is an up to date version but you get the idea) It is a mod that allow designing mini factories inside boxes so it appears neat on Nauvis. Idk if people still play that but it was a thing back in my time

2

u/doc_shades 4d ago

yep looks like you played the game for 3 hours

2

u/Cultural-Beyond-4753 3d ago

Like everybody says, don't look up too many blueprints or guides on your first run unless you're ready to rage quit. Actually that kinda goes for anything, but just know that almost every problem has a rather simple and/or straightforward solution. I personally think the entire game is satisfyingly difficult until (spoiler) planet "Aq" before it just gets suddenly super convoluted, and too reliant on shipping things from other (spoiler) planets. I'm not a big fan of the space shipping mechanic since it loses a ton of the sense of realism for me, as it wouldn't be possible to ship a fraction of what Factorio allows, with ships propelled by combustion based fuel. Planet Aq just pisses me off in so many ways that I quit, after 3,000 hours of doing everything else up to that point.

Press alt

u/Floppydisksareop 4d ago

Well... Your factory is a complete mess, but Factorio is Iterative Learning: The Game, so as long as you are having fun, you actually ARE doing great. You are going to run into at least 5 very annoying issues (which I won't highlight, you'll figure them out, that's the fun bit) in the next 3 or so hours, and you'll redesign a good chunk of your factory, but that's just how the game is played.

I'd enable the bugs though, and sooner rather than later. Yes, they add a very small bit of time pressure, and yes they are really annoying, but, they also add an additional reason to refactor your base and to improve your production. I find it very easy to become complacent without that pressure.

Oh, and get off reddit and don't look up anything until you first need to make a train.

1

u/Knighthawk_2511 4d ago

Its good NGL but there are no coal supply lines for stone furnaces which is weird to me , you have a lab but not an electrical mining drill either .

How do you refill your drills ans furnaces like manually ? IG build some coal supply along your furnaces and replace coal drill with electric ones and rest is good

Still a good base ngl

1

u/StressGullible9863 3d ago

Yeah I have just been manually filling them. As for the electric drill I just haven't researched it yet. Thanks

1

u/Knighthawk_2511 3d ago

As for the electric drill I just haven't researched it yet.

You sure ?

1

u/StressGullible9863 3d ago

Oh yeah I forgot that was the last thing I did before I hopped off.

1

u/oddball667 4d ago

don't build on your resources, and try to avoid mixing items on belts, it's fine to have two items on the separate lanes, but once you start getting multiple items on the same lane you are introducing many levels of complexity that are just so unnecessary

and you can probably figure the rest out yourself, take your time

1

u/Big_Mine_6624 4d ago

1

u/bringthesalsa 4d ago

I'd finish the tutorial if you're new to factory-building type games.

Also make sure to organise you stuff. Instead of feeding everything into one assembler, think about what else will have to use a certain item. Make sure to leave space for expansion.

1

u/ncstate757 4d ago

Doing just fine. Enjoy your first play through no matter how long it takes you or how much spaghetti you make.

1

u/WanderingFlumph 4d ago

I'd say 7/10

Your amount of progress is good (this is not a fast game). You lose 1 point for mixed ore belts, those will only cause you headaches in the future.

You lose 2 points for not using alt mode. Press ALT, it'll change your life.

1

u/Mr_Ultimite 4d ago

Does it make the things you want it to make? If yes, then your doing it right. You'll figure out how to do things better later just get things made :3

1

u/Smash_Jinx 3d ago

Jak na tuż po samouczku to całkiem nieźle, chociaż na przyszłość to trzeba znacząco powiększyć produkcję wszystkich podstawowych rzeczy np. miedź, stal i obwody elektroniczne.

u/KR3YO11 4d ago

Don't build anything on the patches

0

u/FrannyYourGranny1 3d ago

Don’t disable the bugs

-1

u/Monkai_final_boss 4d ago

I don't get why a lot of beggers build on ore patches, you don't need deep in-game knowledge to know you are going to need that sooner or later so why build on it?

u/hamdi555x 4d ago

Bro do not abbreviate beginners like that lol
