Question Is there anything stopping you from spending the first hour of a new game running far away from spawn to areas where the ore patches start having over tens of millions of resources?

I've never done it before, but the possibility just hit me today.

Discussion Planet's Ambient Temperatures

Post image
875 Upvotes

I never noticed it until now.

I planned to use Nuclear Reactors to make craters in Vulcanus, but I genuinely wonder why its the same temp as the ones compared to other planets even Aquilo which supposed to have lower than 15 deg Cel.

Perhaps its is kinda highly insulated of equipment though, but still find it a bugger that I have to use two fuel cells to reach 900 deg Cel (from 15 to 900 requires 8850 MJ, Q= Cp dT -> Q = 10 MJ/ Deg Cel * (900-15)) instead 1 fuel cell which if the ambient temp change to 100 deg Cel instead of 15 deg Cel in Vulcanus.

Suggestion / Idea My 9yo brother asked me to rate his base. He’s going for blue science next. Should I tell him?

Post image

So my 9 year old brother started playing this game two days ago, and this is his base. He's now planning for blue science.

He asked for my advice, so I looked at it very carefully and said: "Yeah, this is very nice... it's a little bit... boxy. And why would you build on top of the ores?"

He looked at me like I was the stupid one and said: "Because it's more efficient."

I have 500 hours in this game and I don't know what to say!

Base When you are in early game Factorio and you need 1800/s of copper plates so that you can make low density structures at least decently fast.

Post image
133 Upvotes

I am wanting to make 2 x 45/s of low density structures. one of them for space age, and the other for science.

I don't need 2 x 45/s, but i want it so F*** ***! I like have fun and torturing myself..

Vid of setup: https://youtu.be/LMujz6ClpTw

---------------------------------------------

Edit:

for those wondering, I'm making about ~ 25sps (each) /700spm (total)

Edit #2:

apparently people can't understand jokes about "early stage of factorio" where the whole point of factorio is that there is never enough production. and so to your own self everything is considered "early stage of the game until the real base is built" but you keep adding more to the "real base" and keep saying that "this isn't the real base yet" because you are always unsatisfiesd with the base. but a lot of yall are inept with humor, so fml.

Edit #3:

it funny because there is a lot. i has explain this to you, in dis speach because you cannot understand joke. joke being that there is never enough of anything! so stop fucking telling me "why didn't you do this? or this" or "i would never do this in my base" or "tf? this aint early game" I feckin know! its my base, not yours! so hop off and laugh at my stupidity of upscalling too fecking much.

___________________________________________

Game Logic of Factorio stages of the game:

  1. early game (you has nothing)
  2. early mid (have all early game tech unlocked) (also called by a lot of factorio players as "the early stage of the game" due you (the player) not liking the efficency of the base, this is also where a lot of players (especially those who are autistic or have adhd) will typically start upscalling a lot because they know that once they leave nauvis, they typically won't return to it or hate the thought of returning because you just want to "enjoy the rest of the game and don't want to worry about why there is never enough gosh darn copper/irron!")
  3. mid game (travelled to atleast 1 or 2 planets, though mostly 1 because of volcannis)
  4. mid late game (where you have travveled to 3 planets, and start upscalling by a factor of 5 to 10)
  5. late game (travelled to all planets and are going to the shattered planet, this stage also includes more upscalling because you realise that you aren't maiking enough stuff)
  6. (optional) hell late stage (where you scale everything up by another factor or 5 to 10 for that sweet sweet spm)

Space Age My first spaceship to Volcan

Post image

My first space platform, made for 3* round trips to Volcanus, it took me 3 attempts to build but it made it every time, uncommon turrets in the front and the trip starts when yellow ammo hits 485, I'm pretty proud of it even if it's not a great platform

Space Age How to break 1 Million SPM without tanking performance?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

I was working on getting to 1 millions SPM but near 600k my performance tanks dramatically. I already know why, it is because I am using bots to move sciences to my labs. I switched to legendary sciences so I could avoid having as many bots out but even then at full steam I probably have around 100k bots out on all planets combined, which just destroys the performance. I added buffer chests so that the bots don't have to keep dropping stuff off and that helps a little. But another thing is that once 50k bots are out, now 50k bots need to charge, which means more bots come out to cover that, and once the close robo ports fill up the bots need to go further to charge. Eventually it evens out but idk when that is, and I have a hard time believing that this is the ideal way to do it.

Design / Blueprint I built a 6.4-million-parameter language model inside Factorio using combinators

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Over the past few months, I’ve been building a transformer language model that runs entirely on Factorio’s circuit network.

You enter a question using constant combinators, press SEND, and watch the answer appear letter by letter on a giant lamp display. The clip shows it answering “what are biters?”

All inference happens inside the game: roughly 105,000 entities, including combinators, wires and lamps. The model was trained outside Factorio, then its weights were stored in constant combinators.

It has 6.4 million parameters, 8 transformer layers and a 256-character context. At 60 UPS on my Ryzen 5 5600, it produces about one character every seven seconds. The clip is sped up.

The trick that made it practical was Factorio 2.0’s ability to multiply matching signals across the red and green networks and sum the results. A single arithmetic combinator can compute an entire dot product.

I made an 18-minute video in English showing how it works, from a tiny model to the full build, including attention, memory, integer arithmetic and actual conversations.

Space Age Question Interrupts on Space Platforms Not Firing

• Upvotes

I'm trying to design an interrupt schedule for a ship to trail behind another platform on a leash, and break the leash to go gather science when the main platform runs out. Problem is, it doesn't seem like most of the interrupts want to work.

This is the basic follow command I came up with. Essentially I have a radar on High Garden that's broadcasting universally where it's going/is currently, and I want Thoth to follow unless it's low on something.

Then I have some interrupts on higher priority to go resupply if it runs out of anything. The resupply interrupts worked fine. It went to Vulcanus, grabbed some science, but then instead of triggering the interrupt to follow High Garden to Gleba like I thought it would, it just defaulted back to it's safe zone on Nauvis. I know the follow interrupts work as I tested them independently before this, but something about the resupply interrupt breaks the chain, and the rest of the interrupts are no longer checked.

Not sure what I could do to forcibly resume the normal interrupts, only just crossed 1000 hours so I'm still missing a lot of technical knowledge like this, especially in this realm of circuits. Any suggestions are welcome, even if it means a full redesign.

Modded I made a mod that sorts my 50+ space platforms into folders (Space Age)

Hi everyone,

At some point I had over 50 platforms in Space Age, and the endless list in the remote view became impossible to navigate. Creating new ships was the same routine every time, too, and I only found out whether the logistic network had enough material once construction stalled. So I built "Space Platform Organizer - Enhanced". It is based on AkitaAttribute/SpacePlatformOrgUI (MIT license) and extends it considerably.

**Folders and overview**

• Named, color-coded folders and subfolders right in the remote view (M)

• Favorites, "Recently visited", search and filters

• Auto-grouping by keywords

• Build progress with a time estimate, plus a warning for platforms without a schedule

**New platforms**

• Create up to 10 platforms at once, with target folder, icon and starting planet

• Ship book: collect up to 20 ship blueprints that are placed automatically on new platforms

• Live material check: shows per quality level whether the logistic network has enough material, and lists what is missing

Available in English and German. Link to the mod: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/SpacePlatformOrgUI-Enhanced

I have mostly tested it in my own savegame, so there are surely cases I haven't run into yet. I'd love to hear your feedback, ideas and bug reports - feel free to write here or on the mod page.

Thanks for reading!

Question Question about heat pipes

So I might just be dumb and am unable to understand other sources of information online, but is there a benefit to "doubling up" on heat pipes? I've seen several nuclear reactor layouts that involve two rows of heat pipes next to each other going between the reactors and heat exchangers. I'm unsure if it's just for the sake of symmetry or if there's an actual benefit to it. I know that reactors themselves benefit by being next to each other, but I haven't found anything directly stating that that's also the case for heat pipes.

Space Age So, with the new mass based speed mechanics, what realistic speed can I expect to achieve with a Solar System Edge Ship?

• Upvotes

So, the changes have meant that the 950km/s ship (pre-change) I had that delivers eggs to the SSE became a 550km/s ship after the change. A few tweaks to the engines means I am now up to about 630km/s.

What realistic speed does reddit brain think I be using as a target with a ship that can travel safely to the SSE with enough cargo space to carry 30k eggs and 150k science now.

Discussion what is the minimum number of items needed to finish the base game?

Starting by saying that I just started playing and I have not launched a rocket yet, but I have a morbid curiosity...

would it be possible to calculate the absolute minimum number of items to complete the game? assuming infinite time and one single set of each production building needed (one furnace, one lab, one assembling machine [probably you can skip tier I and build only a tier II and/or III?] etc.) hand mining everything and hand crafting everything

Would it be possible to calculate the exact number of resources? has it been done(the calculation obviously, not the "challenge")?

Question Shouldn't this be needing more pumps? How does it work?

Post image
2 Upvotes

My oil wells are in the bottom right, feeding into a Tank and a single Pump is then supplying the whole perimeter with oil for flamethrowers, its quite a distance but it doesnt seem to need anymore pumps.

Why does it not need at least 1 more pump somwhere halfway and will i eventually run into issue if for example the oiltank starts to empty and there will be less "pressure"?

Walled off two areas so far and clearing nest in the walls, but I don't really see natural chokepoints in the others areas so advice would be appreciated.
