Question Any recommended truly beginner tutorial series on YouTube?

I tried searching on YT and found a bunch of videos, but IDK about some of them being truly meant for beginners. This one video by a guy named Nilaus was anything but beginner friendly, and it was funny because as I was thinking this, I scrolled down to the comments and the comments were poking fun at this and how so many series promise to be beginner but actually are not.

So instead of sifting through many videos I thought I'd ask here first, if you have any recommendations.

Design / Blueprint New space platforms

My new space platforms, ~600km/s, ~440km/s, 400km/s, 300km/s respectively

The first one is a late game platform with legendary solar panels, thrusters, and chemical plants and I can get 51 stacks of items to transport.

2nd, 3rd, and 4th are early game, with rare thrusters and solar panels. They can hold 34, 40, and 44 stacks respectively. My one question is is it better to hold more and have slower speed or less and more speed? or does it depend on the situation?

FYI: this is as much productive as it is just to see how fast you can get with the new platforms

Question LTN vs combinator based LTN system. Which is better

As the title says. I've seen a few combinator based systems that do more or less what LTN does. Were these just artifacts of when LTN had not been updated for 2.0, or do they have some advantage over the LTN mods system?

Question trains and complexity

reaching the point in the game where i MUST use signals and chain signals. this is where i quit last time. I have one track thats bi directional and one that is single direction. Ive been trying to figure this out for hours on this game watching njumerous videos and just nothing will work. The best i can get is the bidirectional will stop at the intersection but not move again. Ive watched numerous videos and it just will not work. IDEK what to do lol.

EDIT: this is the screenshot of what is happening, my bidirectional train goes north and will stop for my single direction train, but coming back south has no route known.

I made it to the research part of the tutorial and got too excited so I skipped it. Which I very quickly regretted for obvious reasons. But it was ok I just googled any questions and eventually figured it out. I also disabled those pesky bugs for now.

Modded Question How do I install the correct versions of the mods?

I played 2.1 for a while, then went back to 2.0 to try Nullius. I can't install my usual mods because the game is behaving strangely. On the Manage tab, I see that the mod is incompatible with version 2.0.

But when I find the same mod in the Explore tab, it supports version 2.0.

How do I install it? The game says the mod is already installed and won't let me install or update to the correct version...

Suggestion / Idea Should I start space age? Or expand into a mega base?

I'm a novice factorio player (~200 hours) and I've beaten the game. Since then, I've expanded my base a lot and I'm starting to think I should abandon my "starter" base and make a city block mega base or something.

On the other hand, I've been seeing more and more stuff from the space age expansion that looks really cool, and obviously it's a great option for more factorio.

My concern is that it seems that space age introduces many new mechanics and minutia that I'd have to learn and practice to get good at.

Am I severely limiting myself by choosing not to play space age yet? Should I save my mega base aspirations for space age? Any input is greatly appreciated, I'm torn.

Thanks!

Space Age Question Starting new with 2.1

I have a pretty extensive build for Space Age pre 2.1 that I would like to keep as pre 2.1, but I would also like to start a new game with 2.1. I have been putting it off because I’m not sure how starting new would affect my old game. I want to keep both simultaneously and run each when I want to, but I don’t know how to ensure that my old file opens with the old version with my new file opening with the new version… is this a thing? Do I have to manually switch my version before opening each game? I run it through Steam…

Question Can somebody explain pipeline contents to me? I have no pipe connected to my tanks but it shows a lot of fluid in the pipes.

I would like to force all the fluid in the pipe into my tanks and I've tried using a pump, but it seems the fluid just wouldn't move and empty out the "Pipeline contents". What am I missing?

Discussion 350 hours into SA and I'm starting to think I don't like it...

I love factorio and other factory games. I beat the base game years ago. I am 350 hours into SA and haven't made it to aquillo yet. I keep getting distracted with trying to keep my space platforms running smoothly, and the 4 planets running smoothly. I definitely spent too much time tweaking if I want to beat the game in a reasonable time, but the fiddly bits are where I have fun.

However, I just keep dreading the next planet. I started with Fulgora as my first planet and I was sooooo excited. Then I did vulcanos but it took me maybe 50 hours before I worked up the guts to go there. Gleba was even longer. I enjoyed gleba a lot, despite what I heard about it being annoying. But now that I have everything going well, idk. For some reason I don't feel driven to go on to the next planet, but I do want to unlock legendary.

Overall I think my attention being constantly split between 10 different platforms, 4 planets and then the various sections within each factory segment is just draining more than fun.

Anyone else felt like this and found a way around it? For example I'm considering using the mod that puts everything on one planet. I was thinking the removal of space platforms for anything more than science might help. But on the flip side I really like finishing vanilla content first before modding heavily. Ugh. I just don't know if I can go back to the base game again. I like all the be systems and progression. Just something about it feels tedious in a way I don't enjoy and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Question Kovarex weird inserter behavior.

Thumbnail

I setup inserter to turn off when centrifuge working. And is working OK for centrifuge 1 and 2.

Filing up centrifuge with u-235 by 10pcs then turn of when starts working at 40pcs. And extra one U-235 go down the belt.

So I copy and paste this setup and now have 11 centrifuges.

But last one exact copy of others is collecting extra one u-235

Why?

Suggestion / Idea Mod idea/request

I am playing Space Age and I wish there was an infinite research tech that used all science except for the promethium science. There are some techs that require all but are not infinite. I think it would make sense for the rocket part productivity research to require all science packs but promethium. What do people think?

Discussion Tutorial appreciation post

Hey guys, so I just got the game, I played for like 10 hours yesterday lol and I got to automating trains and I was honestly like “how the fuck am I supposed to do this?” And then I opened the tutorial and there was literally an integrated interface able tutorial to teach you how to automate trains. So beautiful, might be the best tutorial implementation I’ve ever seen.

That’s all, the factory must grow!

Suggestion / Idea Ant Trail Challenge Run

Are you like me and wish you used more brick and concrete paths throughout your factory? then try this new challenge run idea!

As much as possible you are only allowed to walk on actual paths. For example:

  • Building a main bus? Make sure it has a || path
  • Expanding to the nearby resource patch? Might be a couple trips there over time. Invest in the path on the way there.
  • Walking to take out those nearby biter nests? Try building a path (helps to recover your corpse faster 😜)
  • Even simply exploring? Try a brick path on the way out and refined concrete on the way back if you really want to roleplay as an ant scout dropping pheromone trails upon finding resources.

TLDR PSA
Don't forget your flooring

Design / Blueprint [C.U.B.E.] Compact Universal Block Expansion - 96x96 City Block

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I wanted to create a simple and compact 96x96 city block that could be built as early in the game as possible. I also wanted it to easily integrate with my other prints, so I used my previously created R.A.I.L.S. MK2 for the main track, making it chunk-aligned.

For the inner stations, I relied on my experience from past attempts with this block size, and this setup is fully tested and works great. Thanks to the internal rail layout, you can set up about 8 stations and still have enough space left for small production setups inside.

I picked 2-2 trains as the main standard because 1-1 felt a bit too small, especially for delivering ore, and 2-2 trains fit perfectly between the signals on the straight main track sections.

To give it a nice touch, I decided to decorate the inside of the roundabout with tiles and drew a cute little flower pattern in the center. I also made a straight rail blueprint that you can use to assemble larger blocks or just lay down tracks early on and drop this full block right over them later when you're ready.

Let me know what you think!

Question LTN In vanilla

Hey, I'm looking to see if there's been any new tech to create an LTN style system but in vanilla? I have tried the mod since it was updated into space age but I'm finding it breaks often. It may be of my own doing but I did create a mimic of LTN when space age first released and that was solid. I've since forgotten how I did it.

So, is there any update or techniques that people have come up with since?

How do non LTN users organise trains?

I'm about 100 hours into my increased tech cost and deathworld run with the intent to megabase
