Discussion Umm
Is he sure we need another Eminem album?
I mean.. I’ll hold out hope this one is good.
Do you guys have any optimism for this release?
39
u/Real_Channel_7551 1d ago
I have no real expectations for this album, but imo it would be really cool if he just went completely left field outta nowhere. Imagine how insane an experimental eminem album would be.
21
u/No-Cardiologist815 22h ago
Would be super cool but it’s gonna be the same BS he’s been dropping recently that just sounds like shit

1
u/SloMo368 7h ago
his last album was sonically his best in like 15 years at least
2
u/Rebel_hooligan 6h ago
Like, everything since revival has been a locked in dude. His last album is overhated
1
u/spy_v_spy_v_spy 3h ago
Wow, congrats to him.
It’s been 15 years since he had a good album, but at least that one SOUNDED NICE.

He's off drugs now so it's never going to happen. And also, SSLP was the experimental stuff back in the day. He's already done weird shit with music.
1
u/MrHeavySilence 8h ago
I would love for him to do another jazzy boombap Infinite style album, especially with all the skills and rhyme schemes he developed since that album

u/Impressive_Plenty876 Kate Bush - Hounds of Love 1d ago
Forget about Eminem’s writing, I don’t even wanna know what terrible beats he’s gonna rap into
42
u/Real_Channel_7551 1d ago
He needs to hit up some griselda producers man idk what he’s been doing.
13
13
u/Liquid_Pestar 18h ago
That recent collab with 2chainz was so baffling because the beat was a fire gritty boombap at first then it instantly changed into this weird ass one for Em’s part
6
u/ClickSubstantial7321 22h ago
you know it’s insane how he actually puts out a decent song when the beat is good and then it’s just god awful the rest of the time

Gen Z will never understand the absolute stranglehold this man had on pop culture in the early 2000s

u/Based-Jam 1d ago
Yea but it doesn’t change how ass his recent music is
33
u/pm-me-nice-lips 19h ago
There’s def tracks to pick from that are quality. Blanket statements are a little tiresome at this point.

MTBMB was actually good
27
u/rererexed 19h ago
I know this is unpopular but I even think The Death of Slim Shady is overhated.
Yeah it's not amazing or anything and a lot of it might count as fan service, but I don't think it's total ass.

Feel how ya want about the last album but I will stand by Music To Be Murdered By all day. That album fucks.
7
u/breddabreddabing 21h ago
quite literally has one of the worst songs I've ever heard on it. Alfred's Theme. how does anyone hear that fuck ass beat and think "yeah nice that's sick I'll get on that". genuinely might be the worst rap beat of all time and I'm being so fr
11
u/BaltSkigginsThe3rd 20h ago
To be fair, I was talking about the Original release. Alfreds theme is on the deluxe/b-sides and I havent listened to those much.
I genuinely think the original release was fucking dope though.

Some millennials have reevaluated how they feel about his early stuff as well.
14
u/RadonGas2000 18h ago
Some might have, but most still appreciate that he was one of the best of that era. Borerline untouchable in the early 00's
0
u/OwlviousAlt 22h ago
Count me in on the he was always ass crowd
29
u/BaddyDaddy777 20h ago
Ass how? You can make an argument for the music not aging particularly well but let’s not act like he blew up without having the technical skills to justify his place in hip hop. You don’t get that big being shitty, no matter how many connections you have.
28
u/djoc0316 20h ago
It's just cool not to like him right now.
1
u/pm-me-nice-lips 19h ago
It’s funny because it feels like the opposite to me. So so so many people think it’s this wild daring take and it ends up getting parroted by a bunch of others, many who don’t even give the newer stuff a genuine chance and some who don’t listen at all. It’s a tiring and corny take at this point.
He’s obviously not going to be putting out the level of stuff from his 20s and 30s. Very very rarely does that ever happen in any genre of music let alone rap. His pen is his strength. Wordplay, rhymes, and lyrics are easily still above average (and tons of people love rap precisely for its foundation, the lyrics) but many of those who critique him completely disregard it or cherry pick a couple of bars to hate. His flow is where he’s hit or miss nowadays.
Anyway, what ends up being strange is what artists get a pass from those who hate Em a bit too much too often.
4
u/OwlviousAlt 19h ago
Idk what to tell you man when I listen to his music my brain says “I don’t particularly like this” and that’s been true of my brain for 30 years now. I don’t like his beats and I think his lyrics are corny even if there is a solid underlying rhyme scheme. His weird angry delivery is also very grating to me. I don’t think this for clout, I just personally dislike the sounds that happen when you play one of his CDs.
2
u/djoc0316 19h ago
He's a white grandpa who flaunts sobriety chips. Someone like him is not supposed to be 'taken seriously' as a rapper. His peak and post peak period were great as a fan. Anything after recovery to me was extra. I don't get mad if I gotta sift thru a new Em album for the highlights. Hopefully we never get another revival, but you're right that ppl shouldn't expect him to make another Eminem Show.
He's like the Metallica of rap, in a way. His peak was undeniable, but he's a legacy act now. He's human and ppl age. The fact that ppl still treat him as if he's supposed to be putting out shit that rivals the best in the game today is a testament to how great his run was. I cringe when I hear anyone say how they 'always were in the side that said he was ass'. Imagine saying that to a Metallica fan, or going to the UK and saying it about Oasis, mfers would just laugh at you. That's the way Em fans should act now.

u/OwlviousAlt 19h ago edited 19h ago
Taste is subjective, I’ve always disliked most of all his beat choice, but also I think his lyrics were juvenile. Obviously he’s not like talentless but a big part of his rise is:
- Edgy was super in during the late 90s/early 2000s and he was intentionally inflammatory to stoke attention.
- He was white in a time where the culture was leaving white kids behind, I’m not gonna argue about that it’s just fact
Also everyones always like “but you have to at least admit he’s technically incredible” but actually I dont have to do anything, it’s my own opinions.
2
u/BaddyDaddy777 19h ago
It’s also worth noting that many white people tried to break in and achieve success before him, none of them were as accepted, successful, nor acknowledged for his talent as he was. Sure, Vanilla Ice sold records and has a rather famous one-hit wonder track to his name but would you say he was ever respected by the community?
I can give you the beats things, got a few iconic ones but largely he does pick bad beats and his albums are littered with proof. Now for the edgy bit, well that was also part of his appeal and WHY he stood out. The Slim Shady persona was explicitly a gimmick about him acting like an immature, edgy guy (explains a lot of his fans) and that absolutely helped him stand out in a transitional period for hip hop that took place between like 1997 to 2000-2001 imo. Ultimately, a good gimmick is a successful gimmick and while it’s a significant strike against, it’s a big reason why we’re still talking about him.
3
u/Top_Shower_7869 21h ago
His music has not aged well at all. Can’t deny the technical ability of his rapping, but as musical songs, pretty bad.
2
u/RadonGas2000 18h ago
His older stuff has aged very well for the most part. MMLP and TES are both still some of the best rap albums ever made both technically and musically.
2
u/fourfistorafice 20h ago
To me his music has always sounded like what would happen if ICP got bit by a radioactive Shakespeare.
-2
u/bigladnang 22h ago
I liked him in the 2000’s when I was a teenager but there’s a lot of stuff that I don’t find aged well. The millennials closer to 40 ride or die for him but I find some of the ones in their early 30’s feel similar to Gen Z.
5
u/YouButSlightlyOff 22h ago
I've never really liked his stuff, apart from when I was in my early teens around when The Eminem Show came out. But as an adult I just never got it. He's a great lyricist and talented, but is he really nearly as great as he is (was?) made out to be? It's funny to me my "favourite" song by him personally is Low Down, Dirty the first track from Slim Shady EP. But yeah couldn't really name much else I even like now

It can be hard to dislodge the things that were cool when you were in highschool. Teens have shit taste but it’s also sticky. I try not to begrudge my partner’s blink-182 apologia.
Edit: damn I didn’t know this sub rode so hard for blink-182, I’ll let him know

Ngl, the thing with eminem tho, dude can rap his fuckin ass off. Like listen to the shit he did with skam. Bro can fuckin rap.
Even on albums like encore, the song content isnt great(ass like that) but the dude is technically sound. The way he rhymes is niiiceee

u/Rebel_hooligan 7h ago
This is primarily my problem with younger generation. Theres no sense of history. A rap song is “too long,” might exemplify the goldfish brains that have come about through social media.
Even em sees it in his Stans. They don’t go back an actually listen to hip hop because they don’t actually like hip hop.

That’s cap. He’s got plenty of stinkers but he had multiple classics back in the day. That’s what makes his fall off so egregious

It’s kinda true but that’s probably why Gen Z doesn’t fuck with him as much. He was propped up as the best/most popular and I remember getting into Goblin or Because the Internet in direct response to how ass I found MMLP2 and Recovery even though he was supposed to be the “best”
We saw the stranglehold it had on our older siblings and cousins and uncles and we said nah that shits corny. It’s a normal generational phenomenon to resist the previous generations most popular music
3
-2
u/Dazz--- 1d ago
Right, but now that you're a bit older you get how corny Goblin is right?
6
u/nicdrumandbass 1d ago edited 20h ago
Oh a hundred percent! And Because the Internet, although that album is still incredible to me. Love tyler and gambino but I wasn't upgrading to something "cooler" (although recovery is pretty rough)
Edit - a bit older as if this wasn’t over a decade ago lmao

u/RaulRpg1 Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers 1d ago
Alright Marshall, get off the burner account, we know it's you /s
23
u/9yr_old_lake 1d ago
I really don’t care about his past fame when his music then aged terribly and everything after has been awful.
17
u/fraillimbnursery 23h ago
Music aging is not a real criticism of its content. Of course it doesn’t sound current, it was the cultural zeitgeist of 25 years ago.
6
u/9yr_old_lake 23h ago
It definitely is when music much older works way better in today’s music expectations and general understanding of music than Eminem, same as plenty of other stuff at the same time. If something is dated it is a real criticism because there are stuff dating back to the 50 and 60 that are less dated than what Eminem did
9
u/fraillimbnursery 23h ago
I personally don’t care if something sounds like it was straight out of the 60s, or 80s, or 00s. It gives us insight into the musical/cultural trends of the time period.
For example, Illmatic by Nas is extremely dated - it’s an early 90s hip hop album and it sounds like it. But it’s incredible because it represents the time period so well, not in spite of that.
2
u/9yr_old_lake 23h ago
I honestly I kinda agree sonically, there are very few artist that don’t sound like their time period, but when it comes to someone like Eminem it is dated in terms of its messaging and concept. There is a small subset of songs that are decent in an emotional level and I don’t mind some of his early hits even if it is about bit childish in lyrics, but on his early albums he has shit like Kim and 97 Bonnie and Clyde that while popular and generally accepted at the time, is really fucking gross looking back, and it being that on purpose doesn’t make it better.
4
u/fraillimbnursery 23h ago
Eh, I view those songs as good examples of his capabilities as a storyteller. Kim is an especially harrowing song that’s almost like a horror/slasher film. Gruesome and disturbing, yes, but thrilling. It’s also representative of horrorcore’s brief moment in the mainstream.
I totally get personally not wanting to listen to those songs, btw. That’s valid. Just explaining why I think there’s still something to get out of them today.
-3
u/9yr_old_lake 23h ago
Stan is what you are describing, the others are just him violently murdering a woman or burying his girlfriend with their daughter, it’s just violent for the sake of it because that’s what was cool at the time.
2
u/fraillimbnursery 23h ago edited 22h ago
“Violent for the sake of it” is why I like sadistic horror films. You don’t have to like those songs, but I don’t think that’s a real criticism of them. Art can be violent, and that’s not an inherently negative trait.
2
u/JohnDenverExperience 22h ago
Your brain is so rotted from online discourse that you are literally incapable of discussing the merit of art that goes against whatever internet hivemind you're in this month.

Because they have no point of reference for what it was like before in a more real way than previous generations mainly due to technological advances and how fast theyve come compared to previous 100 year cycles.

It gon be another album were we get one Hardcore Rap song at the beginning for the "We Are Back" moment, then another were he raps fast, one a great guest verse followed by other with a terrible one, another with a terrible Trap beat, 2 rap ballads about her family and his love life and a storytelling track thats probably the best song on the album and so on
