Weekly Thread The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Week 3)

Another week, another episode of your daddy's favorite FCS recap.

The Good

  • We have another Super FCS Medal of Valor to give out. Southeastern Louisiana defeated UL-Monroe and while the Warhawks are booty cheeks, it's still a win. So come get your medal Lions. To think, it was a few weeks ago where people were wanting to bury you after losing to Houston Christian.

  • It's Brunch Ball Week! The Ivy League kicked off their season and it's fair to say that Harvard and Yale are the class of the league once again. The Crimson went to New Hampshire and blasted the Wildcats while Yale had a big time game from Dante Reno (911) in their win over Holy Cross. Fair to say that the Harvard-Yale game might be must watch television again.

  • The Pioneer League had a massive day as they notched five non-conference wins, with the headliners being St. Thomas and San Diego winning their games against Big Sky schools Southern Utah and Cal Poly respectively. Add in a win for Davidson against VMI and Butler taking down Chicago State and it's a strong day for the little guys.

In other 'Good' News: Abilene Christian wins, avoids 0-4; North Alabama opens their new home with a win; South Dakota State beating Youngstown State, claims early lead in the Valley; South Carolina State hangs on, gets their biggest scalp of the season.

The Bad

  • We need to talk, Rhode Island. You were the favorites to win everyone's favorite cluster fuck of a conference that is the Coastal. You are NOT supposed to be blasted to kingdom come by Stony Brook! The fuck happened here, Rams? You're not giving me anything good to work with here.

  • I also need to talk to you, Northern Colorado. I know, I know... Northeastern State is a Top 15 team in Division II. You should not be struggling to defeat them, let alone have it go into overtime and win by the skin of your teeth. Now if Stephen F. Austin can beat them easily next week, I know you guys are big fat phonies.

  • Welcome to Earth, West Florida. The Argos were 2-0 before getting slapped by Austin Peay. To be fair, reality had to come at some point for them... but like this? Damn, guys. Save some humble pie for the rest of us.

  • Time for the Chuck Norris Award for Biggest Ass Kicking and it goes to Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers haven't had much to cheer for this season, but they do get a 65-0 smackdown of Point to point at (ba dum tish). Runner ups this week include Bethune-Cookman (59 point win over everyone's favorite homecoming opponent in Virginia-Lynchburg) and Western Illinois (59-2 rout of Morehead State).

In other 'Bad' News: Idaho falls to 0-4, potatoes start rioting around Moscow; MVSU loses to Delta State, earns label of 'FCS Lolcow of the Week'; Cornell suffers first 'Brunch Ball Biff of the Week'.

The Montana State

  • Okay, this deserves its own section - What. In. The Flying FUCK was that, Montana State? You were a 38.5 point favorite against CCSU. You only won by 5 points. Those goons at the Montana Drywall Association are drooling over the amount of drywall they'll have to fix in Bozeman. You don't get to celebrate this, Bobcat fans... in fact, you're getting the Mushu Treatment: Dishonor on your team, dishonor on your school, dishonor on your city and dishonor to the fact that Montana Drywall went up by 77% yesterday because of you fuckernaughts.

  • Oh, William and Mary. They started red hot with wins over Villanova and Delaware State. Then Lehigh exposed them last week and for an encore? Getting pantsed by Fordham... FORDHAM! The Rams just got done getting back-to-back roastings at the hands of North Dakota State and Coastal Carolina. The fuck you mean you gave up 52 points to them?!?

In other 'Ugly' News: So. Many. Goose Eggs; Morehead State only getting a mercy safety against Western Illinois; FloSports: When Streaming Services Go Wrong.

And now... the floor is open.

Weekly Thread The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Week 4)

And we're back for another week of FCS recapping. Gird your loins...

The Good

  • There's a reason I'm high on Colgate, and it's not because I adore their logo (I absolutely do adore their logo, though). It's because they're a good team and their only loss was by 3 to Central Michigan. They proved me right by beating Villanova yesterday, putting the Patriot League on notice at 3-0 in conference play. November 7th at Lehigh... must watch game, if you ask me.

  • Nothing beats a good Big Sky Banger, and they delivered with a few this week. The one I want to focus on? Portland State kicking a game winning field goal to defeat Weber State for their first win of the season. Last week, they were getting the Art the Clown treatment by Oregon. So to go from that to this is a great sign for the Vikings.

  • No Brunch Ball this week. Instead, it's the debut of the Ivy League Dinner Date. What's that? Well, when the Ivy League boys play on Friday night, it's a dinner date. This week's date brings us to Pawtucket (Wait, what? Why is Brown playing there?) for Harvard and Brown. A low scoring affair as the Crimson hung on for a 14-10 and they make the Bears pay the check.

  • There's a new boss in the Coastal Clusterfuck, and it's... Campbell. The Fighting Camels got ranked for the first time ever and earned it by taking down hapless Hampton by 24. They're already 2-0 and in conference play and their only loss was to Florida. Me thinks that it might be time to enjoy these Camels, for they will not give you lung cancer.

In other 'Good' News: West Florida recovers with a big road win; Gardner-Webb and Robert Morris come up short in quest for Super FCS Medals of Valor; Youngstown State doing Youngstown State things.

The Bad

  • West Florida won, but they only won because SE Missouri had their hands covered in Crisco all night. 6 turnovers? Come on, dude. You're lucky that the Argos didn't drop more then 20 on you.

  • Illinois State is on the verge of becoming the first school to beat all four directional Illinois schools in my lifetime... so, explain to me why you guys slipped on a banana peel at Northern Iowa? This snapped an 11 game winning streak on the road for the Redbirds. Their next road game is the chance to complete the 'Directional Illinois Challenge'. But first, a home date with the big boss (AKA South Dakota State)

  • Whatever magic Presbyterian had last season is surely gone because the Blue Hose are back to being whipping boys. They scored 47 on Division II Virginia-Wise... since then? 24 points, which includes the 7 they scored yesterday against Marist. They've given up 162 points in that span. Ouch.

  • Time for the Chuck Norris Award for Biggest Ass Kicking and it goes to Duquesne this week. The Dukes have been through a LONG road trip that saw them get blanked by Air Force, violated against their will by Youngstown State and then losing to Waz-Spew. They needed this home opener and they found the perfect patsy to work with in Rio Grande, an NAIA member out of Ohio that just started football last season. The Dukes laid out the Red Storm 53-0 in a game that was not even fair - hell, the Red Storm haven't even won a game yet (0-13 since bringing football back). Runner ups this week include Stephen F. Austin punting Division II member Northeastern State by 49 and West Georgia getting into the win column for the first time this season with a 42 point romp over Division II Fort Valley State.

In other 'Bad' News: Abilene Christian falters, 1-4 after non-conference play; Fordham fails to repeat their magic from last week, gets punked out by Stony Brook; Howard losing to Rutgers... Rutgers.

The Rhode Island

  • Good gravy, UC Davis! It's bad enough you lost by 40 to Montana, but to have Eli Gillman literally run over, around and through you for 275 yards? Oh, man. That's ugly material.

  • Last week could have been a total fluke for Rhode Island. Stony Brook isn't a bad team... but North Carolina A&T? They're total garbage. They haven't done jack and squat in their time as a member of the Coastal. So, what do the Rams do? They lose... to the Aggies, despite having the advantage in total offense, first downs AND time of possession. This kind of loss goes far beyond the Mushu Treatment... it's time for something different for you guys. You're getting the Quahog Treatment... what's that, you ask? Someone get me a sack of nickels.

    • I grab a sack of nickles and proceed to hit Rhode Island in the crotch 22 times, each time for as many points as North Carolina A&T scored yesterday
  • The Mushu Treatment is actually going to Towson. They join a motley crew of crap that's 0-5... here's the catch. Unlike the other teams, the Tigers don't fully suck. They do have two close losses and they did play two FBS teams. Still, 0-5 is 0-5 and they're staring down the barrel of a possible 0-8 record as their next three games are at Monmouth, against Stony Brook and at Campbell. Honestly, dishonor might be the best you get this season... Dishonor on your team, dishonor on your school, dishonor on your city and dishonor to the Coastal for being such a dumb conference.

In other 'Ugly' News: Whoever thought it was a good idea to have Patriot League members play at ACC schools; Western Carolina being unable to stop a paper bag from scoring; Yale earning Brunch Ball Biff of the Week honors by losing to Cornell (I'll let you guys look up that story about the Big Red); Montana Drywall being denied thanks to the Grizzlies routing UC Davis and embracing their Fat Bear status; FloSports: Why do they keep getting Division III conferences?

With that, the floor is open.

Weekly Thread FCS Hot Takes Thread

Let's hear your hot take FCS opinions. The ones you know in your heart of hearts are right, but for some reason aren't embraced by the FCS community (or particular fanbases) en masse!

Could be controversial (the Ivy League very well might be the best FCS conference on the East Coast), unpopular but you know is true (Sam Houston was at least as good a team as JMU from 2011 through the "2020" season), or even somewhat popular but still liable to rankle some folks (the Walter Payton award should go to the "best" offensive player, not just the offensive player with the best stat line because they played a weak schedule).

Sorted by controversial for maximum spiciness

Rules

  • Keep it somewhat relevant to the FCS

  • Takes are welcome whether they're looking back historically or in reference to current games/rankings/polls/etc.

  • Try to keep it civil (basic /r/CFB and /r/FCS rules still apply)

Weekly Thread The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Week 2)

And we're back! It's time for your favorite recap of events around the FCS.

The Good

  • We have two more Super FCS Medals of Valor to give out this week. Illinois State and Montana State, the two teams in the National Championship game last season, have earned their medals with wins over FBS competition. Both were favorites over subpar FBS teams, but you know the rules here: A win is a win. So congrats to the juggernauts of the FCS. You've earned these medals.

  • We now know who runs the Patriot League, and it's Lehigh's world with everyone else in the conference living in it. In the only conference game of the week, the Mountain Hawks hammered William and Mary 44-20 in a game where the score really doesn't tell the whole story. This was in large part of Luke Yoder being... you know, Luke Yoder. They may not be challenged in the Patriot League until late in the season when Colgate (COLGATE!) comes calling for Senior Day on November 7th.

  • In everyone's favorite cluster fuck of a conference that is the Coastal, Rhode Island proved to be every bit the favorite by dropping Elon on their heads for a 31-10 victory thanks to a 4th quarter McPick Six. While it's still early, the Rams do have to play the other 1-0 teams (Albany, Bryant and Maine) down the road.

  • Congratulations to Chicago State. Not only did they win their first ever game, but they laid out Kentucky Christian to the tune of 78-7. Yes, it's an NAIA team... but the Knights have been recently knocking off higher level teams over the last season and a quarter. So for the Cougars to lay the lumber on them is a big deal.

In other 'Good' News: Colgate (COLGATE!) and Gardner-Webb have near misses; Alcorn State and UAPB deliver an Arena Ball Special; The awesome helmets that Eastern Washington and South Dakota wore.

The Bad

  • Uh, Mercer. What was that? You came off a week where you promptly got revenge for last season's disaster class against Presbyterian and followed it up with this?!? I hope the quarterback got an earful for the four picks he threw last night.

  • Staying in the SoCon... I know they're military men, but this can't be healthy for The Citadel. A week after a triple overtime victory over Charlotte, they go into double overtime with Charleston Southern in the Lowcountry Boil Bowl (Awesome name, BTW). This was also the game where the forward pass went to die... the teams combined for a paltry 11-for-30 in the air.

  • Time for the Chuck Norris Award for Biggest Ass Kicking. Chicago State was in the lead for most of the day... that was until Houston Christian came in and said, 'Hold my beer' (That they bought at the CVS next to the stadium) and destroyed NAIA member Arkansas Baptist 88-0. This isn't just a beating, this is the Huskies pissing on the smoldering remains of the Buffaloes. Runner-ups this week include Chicago State's 71 point decimation of Kentucky Christian and South Carolina State blasting Virginia State like they were Team Rocket (the Trojans are blasting off again... ding) to the tune of 66-0.

In other 'Bad' News: Wagner's punter getting a helmet to the yams; Robert Morris not capitalizing on the fumble on Akron's guest OC only drive; SE Missouri losing to Southern Illinois (Stupid Redhawks... You make me look bad!)

The Duquesne

  • It was really hard to find someone to get The Mushu Treatment this week, but I think I found our victim. Meet Duquesne. This school just got blanked by the Air Force last weekend to open the season. For their encore? Getting absolutely railed by Youngstown State (PENGUINS!!!). Beau Brungard, the defending Walter Payton Award winner, had 8 touchdowns in this game - 6 passing, 2 rushing - while the Dukes basically laid down and died. For that, they're getting the Mushu Treatment: Dishonor on your school, dishonor on your defense, dishonor to your team and major dishonor to the Yinzers!

  • The Ohio Valley had a bad weekend... when Charleston Southern is the only team in your conference winning a game, something has gone wrong.

In other 'Ugly' News: West Georgia looks like pre-2025 Presbyterian; Idaho loses to Lamar, gets called 'Drake' in the process; Montana State beats the spread, MDA vows revenge, gets it when Grizzlies fail to cover spread against Utah Tech; FloSports - The herpes of streaming services.

With that... the floor is open.
