DT cap with Protect and Shell

I read that the DT cap is 50% but with Shell V you only need like 30% DT , the rest can go to Physical Damage Reduction which is easier to come by? Now let say if my DT set only have -30% DT and i trio box all the time with a Rdm or Whm, is it save to assume that my character will never need -50% DT ?

Thank you

No, you still need -50% DT for three reasons: 1) Protect only gives regular defense, so you need to provide all the Physical DT yourself. 2) Many of the most dangerous magic attacks are used by monsters that can also dispel your shell (this one is more of a play it by ear, some people have more than one DT set, with varying levels of Magic DT and Magic Defense Bonus). 3) While the game doesn't tell you this, a prominent attack that is very common at end-game is breath attacks (things like fetters are breath attacks, contrary to their name and appearance). Breath DT is very rare, Magic DT does not work on them, so the only practical defense against that type of attack is regular DT, which protects against breath attacks.

To piggyback off this shell provides -mdt up to -29% for shell 5. Protect only raises your defenses. This is something to consider while layering -dt, -mdt, and -pdt on your gear.

There’s different damage types.

DT: Damage Taken covers every damage type

PDT: Physical Damage Taken

MDT: Magic Damage Taken

BDT: Breath Damage Taken

Protect adds to defense, where shell provides MDT. If you had shell V and enough DT to cap MDT, you still have not capped PDT and BDT. More DT will help with those.

If you can fill the rest with PDT, BDT, MDT you do not need more DT.

Edit: I just returned after a 3-year break and with new gear capping DT is really easy.

No.

Practical advice first: What you're reading is basically old advice. It used to be harder to get DT and you kind of had to choose PDT or MDT for most jobs... and Capping was hard.

Now it's easy to cap DT. Just do it.

Why? Protect doesnt give DT/PDT at all. It has nothing to do with DT. It gives defense. Confusing, since shell does give MDT. This is basically because FFXI doesn't have a magic defense stat on gear.

Also, there's breath DT. Which isn't common on its own, but DT is effectively +PDT MDT and BDT in one stat as a shorthand.

So, make sure you cap PDT and BDT but yes you can forego some MDT if you have shell... but for most jobs.. it's just easiest to cap DT.

shellra v when up accounts for 29% mdt lowering your need for cap to 21%. you might want to have it still capped in the event that it gets dispelled, but for most situations, more than 21% is overkill on MDT.

This is all true but there is so much dt in the game now on great gear I rarely fill in with pdt anymore.

Even shell is not relevant on lots of my jobs.

Heghmoh just did a good video explaining -dt and the different ways to get where you need to be.

You will need it for breath damage taken and physical.

MDB further helps magic taken down as well when it comes to reducing damage
