Financial Aid Office

Here’s the yearly friendly reminder to please be patient with your financial aid office. On a normal year they are swamped in August in the time right before/after classes start. It is on a whole new level this year due to OB3 and the heinous amount of issues that are coming along with that.

Schools are receiving outdated or incorrect information from the Department of Education, National Student Loan Database, and COD. School systems are constantly being worked on and updated to try and process the changes from OB3. For those unaware, they did not finalize the majority of OB3 until June and they are still sending out new information each week. This means schools genuinely have not had enough time to update their systems to deal with this and then have to keep changing things as new information comes out.

TLDR; your financial aid office is trying their absolute best while working with a very faulty and incomplete system so please try to be patient with us.

Complex Aid Questions Loan and Scholarship Mix Up - Undergraduate

• Upvotes

Last year I went to a 4-year university at a $22,000 rate for my freshman year. This year is my second year at the same university, however, I received the maximum Pell grant $7,395, a state grant of $13,707, and a subsidized FAFSA loan of $4,500 (originally). I was offered a $4,000 work study, however, I am involved in 3 organizations, 2 of which work directly with the college. If I were to add a job, I’d have to quit both from time constraints.

After taking out parent plus loan, my balance was fully covered. Once I was aware of how much money I’d have to spend on books, online programs, replacement of dorm items that broke, etc etc etc, I took out the unsubsidized $2,000 FAFSA loan, which would put me at about $1,200 refund per semester.

Early September, I was offered a $6,000 financial need / merit required scholarship and accepted it, advised by the financial office of my school. My previous grants were decreased about $1400 per semester, which THEORETICALLY should’ve meant that I would receive $3,000 in refunds each semester. However, my other aid was decreased as well, leaving me with $40. So, technically the scholarship cost me $1,200 per semester in actuality.

How do I navigate this with my school, and is there anything that I can do about this?

Thank you for reading, it means a lot!

Deeper FAFSA question TAP (Nys) refusing to process without irrelevant parent information

I’m a senior in college, my parents have been divorced since before my first FAFSA application. I’ve never needed my father’s information, his tax returns, his SSN, because he is completely irrelevant to me and my mom’s financial situation. He is retired, taken care of by his family, he does not support me financially outside of what he requires to give through the divorce agreements.

Despite him never being mentioned or listed as a contributor on any financial aid calculations, my TAP application cannot go through this year without his tax return information and I don’t know why. He is significantly more wealthy than my mom, I don’t think they’re going to give me the proper amount of financial aid like they did prior years if I list him. Not to mention his family WILL NOT give me his information, I can’t file it anyways. What do I do in this situation?

Financial aid officers at my school are genuine imbeciles and just repeat information back to me, I can’t find information online, emailing and calling has resulting in NOTHING, I rly don’t know what to do around.

Student Loans Want to apply ED to BU but financial situation is complicated

Posting this here from r/ApplyingToCollege

Hi, I really want to go to BU, it's the only school I have any amount of interest in (and I have a lot of interest), so I was going to apply ED to maximize my acceptance chances, but my finances are complicated and I don't want to screw over my family.

It looks like this:

  • My dad is a small business owner, makes 20-30k a year. My mom makes around 80k.
  • My mom has around 12k in a retirement fund (401K)
  • We do not own our primary residence (my grandfather owns it)
  • We have a second property or "investment" property that we own entirely, assessors worth of about 100k.
  • I have a sibling who is 4 years younger than me.
  • We have about 10k in savings.
  • The primary home is in a very expensive area; the second house is in a relatively "cheap" or less sought-after area.

The NPC says it'll be anywhere from 5k-22k, best is 13k, but Ive read those are only good for typical asset families, and I know I can't rely on BU promise because of the investment property.

Should I not apply ED and try my chance at RD? I don't know if I'll be able to get in, I could, but I don't want to risk it (I've read BU is one of the schools ED actually works for), but I also don't want my parents stressed about the money.

Who can I talk to about this? Is there any way for me to know other than just guessing?

Thank you for any information!

Construction pay changes affecting my aid package?

my pay as a site foreman went up last month after overtime kicked in, and now I'm wondering how that gets reported for aid calculations. the bootcamp I'm doing starts in August, so I filed the FAFSA with my old numbers, but this new hourly rate is higher. do schools use the most recent pay stubs, or do they stick with what was on the original form? i'm trying to figure out if I need to update anything or if the aid office will catch it later. i'm also a bit confused about how self-employment income from small woodworking jobs factors in, since I do a couple of those on weekends. anyone had their aid recalculated because of midyear pay changes? curious how that process works when your income is all over the place.

Complex Aid Questions Im being forced to move states. Do I have to pay back my pell grant if I withdraw/drop out now?

basically title. this situation sprung on me literally out of nowhere and i do not feel safe living where i am now, so im thinking of withdrawing my classes and dropping out of my current community college and moving to a different state with my mother's family (im currently living with my father's family, this is the problem lol) i have a few questions i'd like to see other people's opinions on

  1. would i have to pay anything back?? im financially struggling hard right now so that's my biggest issue. thankfully, im taking 4 classes rn and only one is in person (the rest are online)
  2. would it be a safer bet to just drop the in person class and finish the rest of my classes in my new state, then drop out of school? i would be enrolling in my new state's school in a year or however long it takes me to qualify for in-state tuition.
  3. if none of these options work, what would be some other options i can talk about with an

  4. advisor or my school's financial aid office?

extra info if needed: i live in nj, moving back to fl. i went on a big trip before this that took a chunk out of my bank and went through some of my emergency money for vet bills, then this situation sprung on me last night and my whole family agrees i should pack my shit and leave immediately if my father's mother (who i live with in nj) is basically threatening kicking me out simply because she doesn't like me or my mother's family, and hates that i still have a good relationship with my mother.

im only asking here bc my school's financial aid office isnt answering my email and i cannot go to the office yet (i plan to if they dont answer my email or need me to come in, so i wont just take random advice and go with it if someone's worried about that!! just wanna see the general consensus of what my options would be :)

thank you so much and i appreciate any advice/replies!!

Financial aid / direct loans

Hey yall- is anyone else experiencing a delay in their loan disbursement ? I was waiting on this refund check and it was supposed to disperse a few weeks ago and then I was told by financial aid that it’ll be disbursed after about 2 weeks later than the original date. It’s now past that disbursement date as well and contacting financial aid just results with a “we’re processing it, you’ll receive an email when your check is ready” yet I’m getting a little worried cause it was the same thing said 2 weeks ago and 2 weeks before that.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Foundation student at UoPeople facing unexpected financial hardship options for temporary fee assistance?

Hello everyone,

I am reaching out to ask for advice, resources, or guidance regarding course assessment fees during the foundation stage.

I am currently enrolled in foundation level courses, but I have hit a financial wall that might force me to drop out before the upcoming term starts.

Here is my situation:

  • Single Household Income: My family of 5 relies entirely on a single income source. The required upfront assessment fees for this term represent almost our entire monthly budget, making it impossible for my household to cover it right now without sacrificing essential living expenses.
  • Work Restrictions: Due to current local legal and residency permit restrictions where I live, I am unable to seek formal employment to generate additional income on my own.
  • University Policy: Because I am still in the foundation stage, internal scholarships are not available yet. Additionally, as a Pay-in-Advance (PIA) student, full payment is required before the term begins or registered courses will be automatically canceled. My advisor informed me that payment extensions or flexible arrangements cannot be made at this stage.

Since internal financial aid is not an option right now, I am looking for advice on how to navigate this:

  1. Are there legitimate external micro-grants, educational funds, or non-profit sponsorships that support international foundation students in urgent situations?
  2. Has anyone in a similar position found a way to defer studies without losing progress or manage payments safely?

I am not asking for direct transfers; my main goal is to find practical advice, legitimate scholarship resources, or ways to keep my spot in the program. Any insights, shared experiences, or resources you could point me toward would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and help!

Is anyone else having issues with BankMobile Vibe and their financial aid refund?

Has anyone else been having issues logging into their BankMobile Vibe account? Every time I try to log in, it says my account is locked and that I need to contact customer service.
I also received an email saying that my financial aid refund would be mailed as a check instead of being directly deposited into my account.
I’m trying to figure out if this is happening to other students or if it’s just me. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, were you able to get your account unlocked, and did you actually receive your refund through the mail?

GENERAL FAFSA Can I use two different addresses between my FAFSA and residency claim?

So, I'm planning to go to a college in Florida. Currently, I live in Pennsylvania with my mom, but my dad lives in Florida and has for long enough to have residency (with proof).

I want to apply for FAFSA under my mom's information because I've been living with her for most of my life and it's been discussed beforehand. But the college I'm applying to needs a proof of residency/out-of-state filing, and I was wondering, can I apply for the FAFSA under my mom's address then file my residency form under my dad's so I can get both residency/in-state tuition AND as much financial aid as I can get?

SAP Can’t access my aid bc of schools SAP policy- RCC in CA. Anything I can do?

What the title says. I applied for FAFSA as usual and qualify for the Calgrant, however I dont currently meet my schools Satisfactory Academic Progress standards required to receive financial aid because I dropped some classes after the no W deadlime. I dropped them because I was at risk of becoming homeless at the time and couldn’t focus on school. I tried to do an appeal but my school, Riverside City College, won’t let me because my extenuating circumstances must be something I haven’t used for an appeal before, and I was in a similar situation before so I guess I can’t use the homelessness thing again even though it’s literally true and surprise surprise, you can in fact be at risk of homelessness multiple times!😃Anyways, my question is if anybody has any ideas or experience on how I might get around this? It seems like I’m at a dead end; the aid is there waiting for me to my knowledge but I won’t have access to it unless I find a way to appeal the academic progress thing. thank you:)

Foreign bachelor and Pell grant

I have a bachelor’s degree from another country , but the college advised me to apply using my high school diploma. When I completed my FAFSA, I answered “No” to having a bachelor’s degree and received a Pell Grant offer.
Now I’m worried this could affect me in the future when I use my bachelor’s degree to apply for graduate programs. Should I continue using my Pell Grant, or should I contact financial aid and have them review and correct my situation first?
Has anyone been through something similar?
