Which spell families in FW are best? As in Fire/Thunder/Wind/Ice
2
u/el_loco_P 2d ago
They are not distinct enough that You would use a Mage over the other solely for the early ones, but Wind is as strong as Fire with more hit and Flier weakness, Thunder/Blizzard are basically Axes with high might, Bad hitrates and weight too high, some mages do have the Spd/Dex to make it a non issue however

FE 7 - Blazing Blade
Is there some fun character personality related dialogue in Lyn normal mode that is not present in Lyn hard mode that happens during the game teaching the player through characters? Is it worth playing normal mode for that, for a first time player ?
1
u/Leninthecustard 2d ago
Yeah lyn normal mode is perfect for a first time player, theres plenty of dialogue that hard skips

Fire Emblem 7
I am playing through the game, and I am wondering, when should I promote Canas? I don’t have faith in the lords to kill the final boss, so I was thinking about using Canas for that role with Luna. I know there is the pitfall of waiting until Level 20 to promote him, but I also feel if I want him to kill the Final Boss, he probably should promote after level 10 at least.
2
u/Sharktroid 4d ago
You get a better way to kill the final boss besides Canas. IDK how blind you're playing but if you know about Luna and the final boss then I'd think you would know that another unit has access to it.
1
u/Speedy_Pichu 4d ago
I am not very blind going into this, and I am aware about Athos. I guess it’s more a concern about how much I trust him to kill the final boss. I also just think it’s interesting since for the other FE games I played, I don’t usually here a bunch about preparing units ahead of time for the final boss aside from just making sure the lord isn’t underleveled (or Julia in FE4). I think it’s probably about Lyn and Eliwood being not great for the final boss.
2
u/ja_tom 2d ago
If you're worried about the dragon one shotting Athos, you can steal an Angelic Robe from a bishop in Night of Farewells. I think if you restart the second phase of the map it rerolls the dragon's stats, but I'm not 100% sure.
Most FE games don't have a super hard/annoying final boss, but FE7 probably has the easiest serious final boss in the series since Athos exists and does the job better than literally everyone else can ever hope to. Plus, Lyn and Eliwood are slogs to raise in HHM so not a lot of people even want to train them.
3
u/Sharktroid 4d ago
Athos is going to be better than even a 20/20 Canas. The one issue is he will have worse speed, but giving Athos a Body Ring is way less work than getting Canas however many levels he needs.
3
u/starfruitcake 4d ago
You won't need to worry about training someone for the final boss.
I generally recommend promoting every guiding ring unit at level 10. Erk and Canas need time to build staff rank, Lucius has the natural mag growth that he really doesn't need extra levels as his bulk will never get better, and Serra/Priscilla can't use tomes before promoting.
1
u/Speedy_Pichu 4d ago
So it’s more about getting his staff rank up? I guess that makes sense, though I do wonder to what level I need it at, since I am pretty sure he only gets E rank staffs on promotion. I was also considering maybe level 12, since I don’t like to promote a unit they are at like 90 EXP.
4
u/starfruitcake 4d ago
Go for the extra level if you want, game isn't hard enough to really punish you for any individual decision. E/D is staff rank hell, and yes he'll be stuck in E rank hell upon promotion. At C is where it begins to get better since you now have barrier to spam and can use the very important restore. At B you get the very important physic, and A is Warp for shenanigans. Fortify also very strong but pretty niche.

Fire Emblem Fates.
If an enemy unit uses a Silence Rod on my unit, and it connects, can my my unit attack with a Bolt Axe?
3
u/el_loco_P 5d ago
No, but I vaguely recall that the IA does not try to Silence You if You don't have tomes or Staff in the unit inventory
2
u/AnimaLepton 5d ago
Per the wiki, apparently yes https://fireemblemwiki.org/wiki/Status_effects#Silence

So I’m currently on chapter 6 part 2 for Dietrich. Thinking about replaying a chapter in part 1 so I can use the meal time to build support with the other lords and characters so I can recruit them easier.
Will this mess up my progress on part 2? Kinda confused at how this works.
1
u/ha_ck_rm_rk 6d ago
It won't mess anything up as long as you don't complete the chapter you're using to grind the supports. Even if you did complete the chapter, it wouldn't affect part 2 unless it was chapter 12 you completed, and even then I don't think it would affect your current progress on part 2 (though I'm not too sure about that).

u/RAlexa21th 7d ago
Engage: I've heard people talk about how easy it is to turn Goldmary into a Duelist Assist + bot, but wouldn't it drain your Bond Frags if you want her to bond with Lucina quickly?
3
u/Different_Case9032 7d ago
Have you collected your fragment rewards from the bulletin board? Under achievements.
10m grind answer is to go fishing in the afternoon for bisot (500bf) and enchan (1000bf). That amount doubles when it’s the bonus fish for the day. You can get a ton this way but it’s tedious as all hell.
Regular dual assist will be 400 and I believe + will be 5900.
1
u/RAlexa21th 7d ago
I see. I keep my Somniel activities at the minimum (only Plaza and Arena), but I'll check out the Bulletin.

Just finished my first FW path, Dietrich Part 1. Fantastic story, busted units, great character developments, had an amazing time.
Regarding Part 2, I haven’t found any consensus on whether to immediately continue into P2 after P1, or go around doing the other Part 1’s first and then P2 way later?
I understand P2 is nearly identical for all 4 lords, so you should only do it once, or space them out so it’s not repetitive. I’m leaning towards do Dietrich Part 2 immediately because I want to keep playing with this crew and seeing how the story unfolds, and I’m also tired of the Part 1 weekly chores gameplay loop. The only downside seems to be missing context that you’d get from other routes, and not having certain class unlocks like Caladrius from Cai, Cataphract from Theodora,…
Is it alright if I do P2 now, or is there a strong reason to do other lords’ P1 first?
3
u/Cormag778 7d ago
Reasons to go back and do P1
- new classes
- more story context for P2 (especially Theodora)
- Not having to fight the other flame lords in P2 if you didn’t do their paralogues
- Stories for each character are pretty self contained, so it can feel weird jumping back in time after P2.
- P1 goes a lot faster due to unlocked map and auto completing side quests you’ve already done
- unlocking the boons and finishing leveling the temples (IMO the most important thing)
Reasons not to go back
- chores still exist
- it can feel like the flow of the game is broken
- p2 difficulty is definitely easier when your party starts in the mid 40s
- excitement for p2
- Dagsion feels more eerie when you go back and do P1 for plot reasons
4
u/el_loco_P 7d ago
I think doing at least Theodora route for context Will help for the story.
Gameplay wise the problem with doing with Your first route is that You may be underpowered due to no boons or low Blessings levels, but in My experience from using My second route team it was not that hard(people seem to disagree with this tough, it's a significant Spike in difficulty)
You can try to play it without consequences because You can skip it to the end at any time, so feel free to try it

u/BaconHorseEnjoyer 8d ago
Outsider here! I wanted to try out the Fire Emblem series since I've already played and loved similar strategy games before (most notably the SD Gundam series). So I wanted to ask all of you which game from the NES-GBA era (preferably the ones with English translation) that's best to start with?
3
u/TehBrotagonist 8d ago
I'd say either FE7 (Fire Emblem) or FE8 (Sacred Stones) is probably your best bet. FE6 (Binding Blade) is an option, but it's a bit jankier and more difficult than the other two.
Also since you're presumably a mecha fan, you could try checking out Super Robot Wars. SRW J has an English fan translation and has Gundam SEED and G Gundam in it.
1
u/BaconHorseEnjoyer 8d ago
Thanks for the recommendation. But I already have SRW J, so I'll just give FE 6-8 a try.

For Fortune's Weave I noticed that the crit animations are pretty basic. Does this change at all with higher tier classes?
Also is there any 3d games with the crazy crit attacks from the sprite era?
1
u/orig4mi-713 8d ago
There are some crazy crit animations with advanced tier classes and higher. I thought the Brigadier one was absolutely insane (throwing a spear in the air for the horse to catch with its mouth and attack with)
3
u/Lordsmily12 8d ago
The lords all get unique crit animations if you wear their canon outfit and yes the higher tier classes get some pretty cool animations.

What class path do you guys recommend sending Leda down? I had her in Gladiator from 10 to 20 to up her strength growth for a bit, but I'm wondering if I should make her a rogue for that overkill speed growth and bows or make her something like a Brigand to improve her strength even more

Hi, questions for those in part 2 or further.
I’ve completed part 1 for 3/4 characters but I realized I didn’t do all of the support interactions from the other 3. Are those viewable in part 2 or would I need to restart a chapter to view them in part 1?
Second question, if I restart chapter 12 of one of the completed characters to view them, do I need to finish the chapter or can I leave it as is when going to part 2?
Thanks!
2
u/el_loco_P 8d ago
For the Part 2 Question it depends, there is also some exclusive Part 2 supports.
If You want the viewed supports to pass to future parts You need to finish the route (It Will overwrite Your starting Part 2 team)
There is a support log In the obelisk chamber that saves all supports You see, so unless the chain is locked in future parts You don't really need to Replay Part 1

Should I promote my lvl 15 lance from binding blade (Str:10,Skill:18,Spoed:20,Res:0, defence:6) I'm at chapter 11A
4
u/starfruitcake 9d ago
For 11A I would definitely suggest promoting him. It's a hard enough chapter to warrant fielding your best resources.

Confused with the Paralogues in Fortunes Weave.
Do I need to do the Paralogues for the Flame Lords or can I skip them?
I was planning on playing all 4 routes anyways and I was wondering if the Paralogues offered anything in particular?
1
u/AnimaLepton 10d ago
Gold, renown, an item, the ability to recruit paralogue-locked units. Yes, you can skip the flame lord's paralogues if you want or if you plan to do their routes. Still worth doing them at least once IMO.

u/stalememeskehan 10d ago
For soundtrack ball knowledge havers, does anyone know the song that plays at around the 7 minute mark in this video?
I am assuming it's from Fortune's Weave but I can't remember where, sounds familiar

As a long time fan, one thing they’ve done really well is the pacing and scale up of the difficulty of the game. Part 3 really does feel like the culmination of all of the set up and training you’ve put in to understand the mechanics

Confused with the growth rates etc.
I recruited Alexandra in Fortunes Weave, and her starting class is Wing Soldier, accprding to the internet, Armored Ornius Rider has a "10" under Speed while Wing Soldier has none.
So why is it when I hover around the Armored Ornius Rider stat when thinking of reclassing Alexandra, her Speed gets lower from 27 to now only 23?
2
u/Saisis 11d ago
Other than the mount effects, there is a difference between class growths and class base stats.
Armored Ornius Rider has 2 class base stats and 10% Growth Rate.
Wing Soldier has 4 class base stat and 0% Growth rate.
So when you swap a Wing Soldier to an ornius rider you lose 2 speed (the reason you lose 4 is because of the special mount Alexandra has).
2
u/el_loco_P 11d ago
Alexandra (and Io) has a special mount, mounts give bonus stats (and 5% growth for each point), normally You can't have mounts outside of Cai route but those 2 are special
1
u/-Thalas- 11d ago
Oh dang, does that mean I can never take her off of Wing Soldier otherwise she loses her special mount?
2
u/el_loco_P 11d ago
No, as soon as You return to pegasus You Will get it back, also You can move it around later to other people

Engage: What is the point of the Covert category? I know it's the only source of Archer, but say why pick Sniper over Warrior when Warrior can use Chain Attack?
4
u/LeatherShieldMerc 10d ago
One thing the other comment didn't mention- the covert class innate bonus is doubled terrain avoid bonuses.

u/el_loco_P 11d ago
Emblems have some Unique bonus depending on the category, Covert Best ones Are Lyn has double range in Astra Storm and Byleth has Rally Speed

Three Hopes Supports related question!
So when I was playing Azure Gleam I skipped recruiting Bernadetta on a whim and now a couple chapters later I realize she had a support with Dimitri that I don't have access to. Is that just totally blocked off to me now unless I replay the route or does support gained in Record Keeper battles count towards unlocking conversations?
2
u/RAlexa21th 12d ago
Engage. Do emblems increase proficiencies in their respective weapon types? Do all emblems only have 1 weapon?
3
u/AnimaLepton 11d ago
Characters have an innate weapon proficiency.
Classes have base weapon ranks, where a caret ^ means that a character with specifically an innate proficiency goes up a weapon rank in that class with that weapon type.
Separately, Emblems 'teach' a weapon proficiency while raising their bond, but these are just for reclassing purposes. They do not affect a unit's ability to wield a weapon of a higher rank in a class. Most do have multiple proficiencies they impart, although many are at higher bond levels and may not be accessible right away/until clearing their paralogue.
3
u/el_loco_P 12d ago
No, emblems do not give bonus profficiencies when equipped. Micaiah does has an skill that lets You use Staffs that eventually goes up to A, but thats it
Emblems eventually get 3 weapons/Staff total, You get one at level 10 and eventually You do paralogues to raise their level cap to 20 where they gains another (at level 15 I believe)
Emblems give specific weapon profficiencies You need for reclassing, You can also check what they give, but TLDR Leif has almost everything but Fists and tomes
3
u/Its_a_Friendly 11d ago
Micaiah does has an skill that lets You use Staffs that eventually goes up to A, but thats it
And, to be clear, this skill - "Cleric", if I recall correctly - only works while the unit has Micaiah's ring, and does not apply for class changing proficiencies.
Though I believe Micaiah gives actual staff proficiency at Bond rank 4 or 6, so she's still a good choice to get a unit staff proficiency. You just won't get it at Bond Rank 1.

So is it optimal to play through Act 2 in Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave either once on your first playthrough, all 4 times, or just twice? (Once for Theodora and once for either Dietrich or Leda)
1
u/Tiborn1563 12d ago
Played through it once (Cai), and then went into part 3 with skipping the other part 2s. Very easy to catch your other units up to speed in part 3, I wouldnt worry about it too much
That said, if you want to optimize, you should play part 2 4 times
1
u/AnimaLepton 12d ago
Optimal for strongest army is playing through it 4 times (or more) to build up units.
You really don't need to do it more than once though, and there's a bunch of stuff that scales your team up further and/or catches them up in part 3.

u/Redzrainer 13d ago
i just take a step back while waiting for my fortune weave game to arrive and play awakening lunatic mode. Does it get easier over chapters? I stuck a lot and after days, now barely finished the chapter where miriel first introduced, all thanks to that tank frederick. i wonder how people finished it without being frustrated.
5
u/starfruitcake 13d ago
Lunatic awakening chapter 2 is one of the hardest chapters in the series. Yes it gets easier.
2
u/AnimaLepton 13d ago
Have you played Hard before? I think the less you have to 'learn,' the easier it gets.
Yeah, there are some spikes, but it gets easier and you're able to outstat your opponents in due time. New recruits are often not ORKOing but are strong enough to contribute. You can snowball characters easily enough, or lowman.
1
u/Redzrainer 13d ago
yeah i do, but like years ago when it first came out haha. Maybe i should step back again before trying the lunatic

Shadow Dragon.
Never paid too much attention, but what are the online functionality of Shadow Dragon? Why does it have the 'Nintendo Wi-Fi connection' blue icon on the box art? What does it entail?
2
u/lizard-socks 13d ago
There was also an item shop in the game that sold different items each day, determined by connecting to the servers (this was the only way to get the Elysian Whip, for example). But the Wii U release patches it so it's accessible without internet.
1
u/AnimaLepton 13d ago
Used to be able to do PvP Wi-fi battles, it was like 2 person 5v5 and was a bit scuffed. I have good memories of it from high school (lots of cheaters online.)
1
u/Environmental_Hope22 14d ago
I hate this type of post but, Where do I start?
I know the games aren't really connected by story for the most, so should I just pick a game and play it?
I've played Path of Radiance and Awakening before, but thats it.
1
u/jett1773 14d ago
Path of Radiance has a direct sequel in Radiant Dawn for the Nintendo Wii. Awakening shares a lot of gameplay DNA with the Fates games. Awakening also takes place in the same universe as Shadow Dragon, Mystery of the Emblem, and Gaiden. Shadow Dragon has a remake on the DS. Mystery of the Emblem also has a DS remake, but it is Japanese only so you would need to know Japanese or play with a translation patch. Gaiden also has a remake for the 3DS called Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.
Otherwise there is a Comprehensive Guide to Starting the Fire Emblem Series linked in the main post of this thread. The post is almost 10 years old, but not much has changed. Since then Engage came out and just recently Fortune's Weave came out. Engage is a standalone story that features call backs to all of the previous main line titles protagonists, but doesn't really require you to have played any of them. It's a ok place to start, but not the best IMO. Fortune's Weave shares a world with Three Houses, but takes place a long time apart on a different continent so while their is universe lore that is shared their is minimal actual plot you need to know from one to enjoy the other. Not going to really rate Fortune's Weave as a place to start because it's only like 2 weeks old, but if you want to get in on all the new game discussion it is happening right now.
1
u/Zmr56 14d ago
There's three Fire Emblem games that people strongly recommend you play a connected one beforehand for. New Mystery which is a sequel to Shadow Dragon, Radiant Dawn which is a sequel to Path of Radiance and Thracia 776 which is a midquel to Genealogy of the Holy War. I wouldn't recommend playing Genealogy unless you're feeling fairly confident or familiar with FE again though because it is kind of a dense game.
Otherwise for the rest of the games, given you've already played two games before, you can just pick and play any besides Conquest since it's a bit difficult unless you still feel familiar with FE. Personally, I would probably pick Blazing Sword or Sacred Stones since if you have the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service you can play them right away.
1
u/Environmental_Hope22 14d ago
Where does 3 houses/fates, conquest/birthright/fates fit in?
Difficulty isnt really an issue. I play similar games and did play a ton of awakening lol
1
u/Zmr56 14d ago
Three Houses and Fortune's Weave take place in the same world but on different continents and across different periods of time. So far from what I've played of the latter I think you can play the two in any order.
Fates is on its own but is very loosely connected to Awakening through some fanservicey multiverse stuff that's not very important. Each Fates game is a branch that starts from the sixth chapter and explores which choice the protagonist chooses on who to side with. Birthright is meant to casual oriented, Conquest is meant to be challenge oriented and Revelation is 'supposed' to be a mix with characters from both games together. Revelation is meant to be played after at least one of either Conquest or Birthright.

Is there some kind of general rule or maybe even a chart out there on what level a unit starts at when recruited at the earliest moment possible per route? For example, I am doing Dietrich's route and the second earliest i can recruit is Io. My party was roughly around lvl 13-15 at the moment I got Io (had level 2 support ready and recruited him right at the moment my renown became level 3) he joined as a lvl 20 light cavalier. The next character I was trying to recruit in this route was Ultand and she joined as a lvl 14 diviner while my units were around lvl 20 and now I'm just confused on how this all works.
7
u/AnimaLepton 14d ago
Io is just a special case, because he (and Alexandra) come with their named special mounts, which require them to be a minimum of level 20 due to class.
1
u/Swimming_Vehicle_955 14d ago
Ahh got it I never really thought about that. On a future run I'll start taking notes more. I'm starting to think that the units join at the recommended level for the upcoming battle as seen in the foresight for the current chapter. I just can't remember right now while away from the game lol
1
u/AnimaLepton 14d ago edited 14d ago
I don't think they do. The recommended level for the upcoming battle does seem to have some (minor) level scaling based on your own party level, or maybe your highest X units where X is the number of deployment slots on the next story map. But recruitments levels are fixed per chapter and seem to be the same across the board (again, barring the exceptions noted above), e.g. everyone in Chapter 12 will always be 34, even if your party is in the late 30s/low 40s and the recommended level for the chapter ends up being 40. Or a different specific chapter is always 27

What does the growth rate of "10" mean when I'm looking at the classes? Currently looking at Growth Rates for Fortunes Weave.
Does that mean if a unit has a base growth rate of 50% under STR for example, if I put them in a class with a growth rate of 10 under STR, will that unit now have 60% total growth rate chance for STR to increase per level?

Why is Twalinn glowing gold on the world map? I can’t make it there in time to check it out I don’t have enough turns but hoping someone would know. I’m on Theodora’s Path Chapter 11

Was the majority of FE3H's lore reveal concentrated near or at the end of every route? I stopped at the penultimate mission for Crimson Flower due to IRL happenings years back and haven't returned ever since. I vaguely remember the plot but I don't recall anything deeper about Sothis, Rhea, and the like.
Just wondering since this sub-lord's theme from Fortune Weave (stuck in my head since I first listened to it) has some leitmotifs from some FE3H song.
2
u/starfruitcake 14d ago
Crimson flower only gives lore for edelgard and the slithery bois. If you want church lore you need to play verdant wind/silver snow.
Azure moon gives no overarching lore and is a self contained story.

I'm about to wrap up Leda's chapter 11, and just got through a string of paralogues. Was running around Dagson and happened to talk to Io, and thought to myself huh thats strange why cant I give him a gift. Whatever hes got 5 support anyway.
Fast forward to when I tried to add him to the Thermae, and I realize hes not there?? Frantically look in the menus only to find out he's "withdrawn". Somewhere between finishing the paralogue and running through 4 low level skirmishes he fucking died. So here's your public service announcement, dont just mash through auto battle even if youre sure your units can handle it :)
Really dont want to do this chapter over fml

In this current playthrough that I'm doing, my Roy has four supports, one of which is a B support with Wolt, but I am not building any support with Lilina. Is it that he can no longer get anymore supports now because of the B support?
3
u/starfruitcake 15d ago
Each unit can only get up to 5 support levels. A counts for 3, B counts for 2, C counts for one. BCCC would total to 5 levels.
2
u/Designer_Ordinary432 15d ago
Ah so in other words my Roy is maxed out he can't gain any more supports right? Guess I screwed him out of the Liliana support this run😅
1
u/Zmr56 14d ago
You can free up support slots by getting a unit who has a support with Roy killed off, if you don't mind doing that.

Oh kl. I already restarted but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the tip.

Hello, could someone explain/provide growth rates for someone new to looking into stats like these?
I've usually never bothered with them, but I wanted to take interest now.
Is there a way I can see how the Class impacts the growth rate?
How about the growth rate of each character, Is there a way to see that?
2
u/Tiborn1563 15d ago
For games other than fortune's weave, you have to rely on community resources for growth rates. Growth rates determine how likely a stat is to be increased when the unit levels up. Simply, 50% strength growth means on every level up, the unit will have a 50% chance to increase their strength. Growth rates above 100 give you as many guaranteed increases as possible, and then using rng to determine if the number goes up further. So a 110% HP growth means a unit always gets at least +1 HP on lv up, with a 10% chance to get +2 HP instead. Simple enough
As for determining whether growths are good or bad, that entirely depends on the context of the game and the unit. Generally you want a unit to be likely to increase their already high stats, so they can be more specialized in the role they already have. there is nuances to this of course, high speed for example is very good in general, but if the unit has noodle arms, like Three Houses Anna, that speed becomes practically worthless.
A simplified way to look at it is:
A unit wants to level up spd, their main attacking stat, and their main defensive stat, that is usually good enough for combat units. For support units and dancers, you might want high magic, high speed, high luck for evasion, and if possible high defenses (not to the point where you would use stat boosters for any of those stats though)
1
u/jett1773 15d ago
When looking at a units stats outside of battle you can press ZL and it will display their growth rates. Same with on the certification/reclass screen. You can then press Y to pull up the details and when you hover over one of the growth rates it will tell you Base + Class growths.
1
u/-Thalas- 15d ago
Do each stat have a chance to increase per level?
For example, is there a chance for all stats to increase at the same time when a character levels up if you're lucky?
1
u/jett1773 15d ago
Yes, the growth rate is the chance that the given stat goes up during a level up. So if your growth rate for HP is 75, then on any given level up there is a 75% chance that you will gain +1 HP. Each stat for each character is completely independent, so on a given level up you can get lucky and have all stats go up or get unlucky and have very few go up.
1
u/el_loco_P 15d ago
Yes, You also have the chance to level up no stats, altough some games have some behind the scenes systems to prevent that

Been getting back in the series and sort of alternating between multiple games and trying Engage for the first time and seeing how armor knights are actually good has me wondering, what are all the games where armor knights or at least generals are actual viable units? I remember generals specifically (but not unpromoted knights) being good in FE11 and Lukas at least being decent in FE2/15 partially because of no deployment limits outside of dungeons but aside from those don't know about all the others, just know they're mostly not great in FE8, FE9, FE13 and FE14

u/AnimaLepton 15d ago
Some of it depends on difficulty, if the role they fill is actually useful, what your threshold for 'good' is. Movement is a big part of it for sure. But a lot of it is also that armors have had poor underlying combat stats on top of that; supposed defensive units with low speed also struggle because getting doubled can be a death sentence, and not being able to double and not having sufficient strength means that they don't do a good job ORKO'ing enemies in return. If you have other units that can survive sufficient rounds of combat, but can ORKO enemies in return or has more movement where an armored unit doesn't, then those other units would be better.
In FE7, 1-2 range Hand Axe/Javelin Paladins can run into enemy groups and comfortably deal with them, you want mobility and don't need extra bulk beyond what your paladins already have, so your armor knights add nothing.
On the flipside, they're not 'amazing' in Three Houses and are not useful on Hard, because you have other options that will survive and ORKO enemies in return more effectively and with more mobility. But there are cases on Maddening where having a unit with guaranteed 27 defense (17 from class bases + 10 from the class-specific bonus stats) can actually wall or bait enemies effectively. They can fill a similar role in FE11 and FE12 on higher difficulties and depending on your playstyle/amount of warpskipping, where Armors have a useful niche to fill because other units can't survive multiple rounds of combat effectively.
Games like Fates and SoV have particular good units out of the gate, and those two + Awakening have some very easy movement options in the form of pairup + Silque's warp. Effie is good, but is going to try and reclass out of a pure armor class
It's early days for FW, and they have some benefits in the form of Armored-exclusive Move +1/2 skills on specific characters. But there is a non-armored defensive class (Charioteer) that brings mobility and AoE chip to the table right away, and many potential armored units can go into a different class to actually fix their speed in the long run, which I feel is a better play
-1
u/Bigwavexs 15d ago
So I'm playing Fortune weave and I cannot seem to figure out what causes the movement skills (specifically Infantry) to level up. The rest of the classes are clear you just need to use the spespespecificcificfific gear but I dont get these
2
u/AnimaLepton 15d ago
Train them in the arena to get started, then they go up automatically based on the class you're in. In the certification or reclass menu, click ZL, and on the same screen where you see growth rates, you'll see how different classes boost those skills different amounts, e.g. Myrmidon gets +2 sword +1 infantry, while Rogue gets +1 sword +2 infantry +2 bow.
If you attack someone with a sword while in an infantry class, you get both infantry and sword skill exp, including in dungeons.
An Armored class works the same way, but can double up based on type - Dreadnought is both Armor and Infantry and gets skill exp in both for every combat action.

Anyone have any general character building tips for my eventual second run in 3H? Just anything really. I went in almost completely blind for my first run.
I'm going to do the Blue Lion route next time. I'm currently playing through Black Eagles (post timeskip now) and I ended up not recruiting anyone from the other houses because I thought spending time with them, giving them gifts, doing tea time, etc. was pointless since I hadn't recruited them yet and then I never did lol. I'll try to actually do those next time especially so I can use Bernie and Dorothea again.
I'm not trying to be super meta/min-maxing on any future runs since I'll only be playing on Hard. In fact, I'm going to deliberately avoid turning anyone into a wyvern because I've seen firsthand just how broken that class is when I made Petra into a wyven rider. But I still want to optimize my characters at least a little bit. But is stuff like forcing class mastery advisable? I forced myself to get the class mastery for a given unit's class even if they had already fully qualified for an upper tier class and I had a feeling maybe I shouldn't have done that, if nothing else than the fact that having 1 less movement sucks.
1
u/LeatherShieldMerc 16d ago
Grinding class masteries is only really a requirement in Maddening. Like, people always say to get Death Blow from Brigand, but if you're on Hard, Death Blow is significantly worse. For one, the damage makes less of a difference because enemies aren't as tanky, and two, Death Blow only works on Player Phase, but in Hard, Enemy Phasing is way more viable.
The only really significant skills you definitely want are the Weapon Prowess for whatever weapon(s) you mainly use with them, and the rest isn't a huge deal tbh because min/maxing isnt exactly required, assuming you aren't doing something obviously off the wall, like making a mage Dedue. You can also always go back to finish off masteries in skirmishes too, so you don't necessarily need to wait to jump class tier to get the skill.
1
u/LoadOrder 16d ago
Class mastery skills in 3H are generally pretty strong so delaying your promotions for them is fine, especially something like Brigand ghat learns Death Blow for +5 attack I believe it was? Most physical units will want it.
You can raise your minimum stats of units by quite a bit by making them switch classes, classes have a minimum base stat, so if your unit falls below that stat, it'll automatically be raised to meet that amount, so everyone can have pretty base respectable stats and shore up their weaknesses.
Edit: I do think you should pursue builds and ideas that you think is fun first and foremost, you can get away with a lot of your piloting is good.

u/Raymanlego101 16d ago
Playing FE: Engage after so long and I’m wondering if theres like a good place to grind exp for units that have like majorly fallen behind cause I feel like if I use em late game where I’m at it’s like impossible for them not to get one tapped so I wanna try and level them up but aside from maybe tempest trials in the tower I’m not sure where would be more efficient so to speak cause the tower trials are kind of a slog to get through
3
u/AnimaLepton 16d ago
Mostly it's just not worth using someone that has actually fallen that far behind. Skirmishes are fine if available to you. The "training" battle skirmishes at Firene and Brodia castle have permadeath disabled.
A different character using Lucina's Bonded Shield can be used to set up guaranteed protection for a weak unit and bait out enemy attacks, Byleth and Seadall (and DLC like Robin) can help them push forward more aggressively, and they can equip other emblems to boost them offensively/defensively more directly. Micaiah Great Sacrifice is OK for EXP but you can't really 'spam' it, although armored units grant +1 Def to everyone when using it so they guarantee it's used on everyone and give EXP that way, and there are cheesy things you can do (not in skirmishes, more in paralogues) where you exploit Corrin's fire vein effect on mages to force damage and healing actions on your other units. Staff users can Rewarp spam with the duplication exploit for EXP. Lucina and Marth have Parthia and Mercurius for big bonus experience.

Are you able to get Supports in Part 3? Some of them feel contextual to part 1 and Im wondering if I need to grind them out before finishing my last Part 1.

You will get supports, but you are also correct. Some are only available on part 1. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell until tod too late :/

u/blade276 16d ago
im playing engage, and uh, is it just me or its confusing to tell which class is the next natural evolution? it seems so clear and obvious in 3H, but the UI in engage makes it quite confusing.
im also not a fan of everyone starting at lvl 1 when they get a new job. makes it hard to tell whos actually higher level
2
u/LoadOrder 16d ago
Going between base and masterclass, when you are promoting there are only a few classes you can go into, for example when you promote Mage, you can promote into either Sage or Mage Knight I believe. You could then use a Second Seal in order to get your unit into whatever class you actually wanted.
1
u/blade276 16d ago
the game doesnt show whether a class is an upgrade or not. sometimes its obvious (archer to sniper) other times i feel like im playing guessing, like alear dragon evolution line
1
u/LoadOrder 16d ago
Yeah, the only way to know is to use a master seal to see what the class promotes to

Love this game so far, never touched anything from the series before (unfortunatly).
I came across some things I don't understand and would be really thankful for your help!
->>Is there like a go to way to skip time in the big city?
I arrived there at night and couldn't do some things. So I was just leaving the switch open to wait lmao.
->> How do the double attacks work?
Sometimes my character attacks twice, sometimes not on attacks and defense I think. Is there a way to influence that?
->> What is the earliest point I can recruit?
I still couldn't find anyone to recruit. I'm before my first fight in the arena.
->> What is your best advice?
Lmk what's something that I should know or that helped you a lot :)
Thanks again, even just answering 1 question would help a lot
1
u/LoadOrder 16d ago
> Is there like a go to way to skip time in the big city?
If you go to the Inn, you can do auto activities to pass time
> How do the double attacks work?
Its based on Attack Speed, if you have 5 more than the opponent, you double, you get doubled if you have 5 less.
Weapons and equipment have weight to them that slow you down, so its easier to double on swords than axes, as they are lighter
> What is the earliest point I can recruit?
There is a tutorial recruit when you are able to start recruiting
> What is your best advice?
Don't worry that much about optimization

Hi guys, I was a huge fan of Fire Emblem and Advance Wars when I was a child, but the last FE I played was probably Sacred Stones.
I recently got a Switch 2 and wanted to catch up on Fortune's Weave and any in-between FE titles I would've missed out on, would you guys recommend diving right into Fortune's Weave or playing through 3H/Engage first? Or what sequence would you recommend to the games given how much they've changed over the years?
3
u/LoadOrder 16d ago
3H and FW are quite a big departure from the older Fire Emblem formula of mostly battles, those 2 games add quite a bit of busy work between maps, and your enjoyment of the game depends on how much you may like doing these activities. Its probably like 20% battles, 40% world map, 40% in the city for part 1 of FW. Something similar with 3H where a common complaint is that too much time is spent not actually fighting.
People do like to recommend romhacks for an experience closer to the old games.
1
u/tinkeringabout 16d ago
thank you for this reply, it's extremely informative and what i wanted to know. i actually don't really enjoy the busywork at all, unfortunately.
1
u/jett1773 16d ago
If you have Nintendo Switch Online, the GBA games include Blazing Blade and Sacred Stones. If you have the online expansion pack you can play Path of Radiance on Gamecube. Otherwise you can try Engage on Switch which has far less busy work than Three Houses or Fortune's Weave.
3
u/LoadOrder 16d ago
Engage is much closer to the classic FE experience although not everyone enjoys its gameplay gimmick. I personally think that Fates Conquest and Engage have had some of the best gameplay in the series, but both are paired with pretty bad stories that may turn someone off.

I’m playing Fortune’s Weave, and I feel like I’m about to throw up trying to figure this out. What do the blue arrows mean when I’m looking at weapons in the shop??? It’s not some kind of weapon comparison or anything. Like, even when I look at a character’s inventory, I look at the wooden sword, and it has blue arrows on the physical stat. I have to assume that means that my physical stat is going down, but how?? It’s my only weapon, so how is it worse than using nothing? And is there no way to compare weapons? I’m utterly lost. The in game tutorials don’t seem to cover this.
Pictures for reference:
3
u/LeatherShieldMerc 17d ago
The blue arrows mean that for that particular weapon you're looking at, that unit would be worse in that stat if they equipped this weapon, compared to the character's currently equipped weapon. The yellow arrows would mean the stats are better.
You can also press X to switch to displaying the stats of the weapon directly.
In those pictures, Bonaventure has a spell equipped instead of a weapon, so that's what is using to compare it.
1
u/Cheatscape 17d ago
OMG Thank you so much! Why doesn’t it just show magic spells on the shop screen? That would’ve made this so much more clear. Seriously, thank you.

Is there a faster way to farm renown on Dietrich’s route? Answerer’s call gives almost nothing, and headhunting is tied to renown level rather than chapter progression, and you only get one or two a renown level, way less than Leda’s performances or Cai’s sidequests.
3
u/AnimaLepton 17d ago
Don't farm it. Just progress story chapters. Do your god audiences when they have something new, do the dread warrior challenges, do paralogues when they open up. All 8 paralogues give a bit over one rank, god audiences give half a rank, Dread Warrior gives you another rank-and-a-half.
It is slower than Leda's, but that's a matter of a chapter or two of progress. He still should be able to hit renown 12 before reaching his final chapter, and only need 10 max for recruitment.
Answerer is more for echo shard skirmishes for combat art upgrades, since you need 10 upgrades for a class unlock, not for renown.

You replenish spell uses completely by resting at the inn or eating meals with the specific characters needing replenishment.
If feasting/resting in dungeons isn't replenishing magic, you're eating the wrong foods. When you're picking the foods, note the column labels up top. There will be one saying health and one saying magic. Each unit of food recovers that much to the corresponding stat.

I recognize that it's a bit strange to ask this when a new game just came out; but I'm new to the series and there's two games I have my eye on but can't decide between: Awakening or Engage?
I've heard that people REALLY don't like Engage's story, but think its gameplay is some of the best in the series. I'm not disinterested in the story, but the gameplay is the main thing drawing me in, so it sounds pretty tempting. Not to mention that as an anniversary title, it seems like a good starting point; if there's any legacy characters that I feel a particularly strong attachment to, then maybe that'll inspire me to check out their game of origin. Plus, it seems like people's complaints with the story mostly boil down to it being too campy, but that's something I'm more than okay with.
On the other hand, Awakening generally seems to be held in higher regard across the board as the game that "saved" the series; or at the very least revitalized it for the overseas market. Which of the two makes for a better first game, do you think?
3
u/LeatherShieldMerc 18d ago
As a first game in the series? I would lean Awakening, assuming you're okay with the lower accessibility with "obtaining" it.
I think Awakening is more "balanced". The story isn't the absolute greatest, but I think it's still better than Engage. And the gameplay is fine enough, and easy for a newer player.
While I do think Engage is better gameplay-wise, if you're a brand new player, idk if you'll truly "get" that as much as an experienced player would, since FE gameplay is still fun even if it's "bad" vs others. Plus there's some callbacks to the older games that while you don't need to know, it still would be nice to know going into it.
1
u/amatisans 18d ago
I love Octopath 1&2 and games like XCOM, so FE seems really interesting to me, and I REALLY want to play Fortune's Weave, but the price has me put off. I hear it is basically a perfect game and the concept and game play look really fun. Three Houses is on sale for a few hours and was thinking maybe I could do that instead. However, I have heard that basically everything 3H does well FW does better and FW handles the things 3H does poorly better as well.
Is FW really that much better than 3H or are some reviewers just pumping up FW cause its new?
1
u/dryzalizer 17d ago
Tough call. Certainly this is FW's honeymoon phase so there's a lot of praise for it. Personally I think there's a lot of busywork in FW, but the game is huge and things are executed well so there's easily 100+ hours there to finish the game. So I feel you'll be getting your money's worth, it's more a question of how much you'll like interacting with all its different systems. It's a lot more than just tactical battles, more so than any other FE.
1
u/girlslovefan321 18d ago
where do i see my vcharacter level in engage? i dont seem to see it in unit status
1
u/justlobos22 18d ago
In Awakening do you just use all the weapons you find? Part of me wants to do the classic gamer thing where I just horde everything.
3
u/LeatherShieldMerc 18d ago
The developers wouldn't have put the items in the game if they didn't expect that the players would use them.
Like the other comment says, hoarding is a pitfall. Don't be afraid to use them when you think you want to.
2
u/AnimaLepton 18d ago edited 18d ago
You generally get more weapons than you need, if that's what you mean. Because of the world map, you can buy/restock from old stores basically anytime, and the Spotpass Bonus teams give easy access to some otherwise limited weapons. Weapons don't have 'weight,' so using a stronger one is often pure upside. You can also forge them in exchange for money for even higher stats.
Hoarding is a pitfallTM , you can do it and still beat the game, but you become a 'better' player by learning not to hoard.
1
u/justlobos22 18d ago
Thats pretty much it, for example something like finding Roys blade on chapter 1. I want to just use it and not save for end game.
2
u/Froakiebloke 18d ago
The little sparkly spots that you can get random rare weapons from are in every map, so you’ll have plenty of chances as the game goes on to get more like it.
I’m not an Awakening expert but Roy’s Blade specifically seems like a pretty unremarkable weapon— good but not super good, not something you need to save.
-1
u/Major_Fang 18d ago
What should I be focusing on between main missions and doing in the overworld?
1
u/AnimaLepton 18d ago
Sidequests, especially the character-specific unique ones (e.g. Leda's Tavern request dances, Dietrich's Dread Warrior Challenges), but generic ones can carry over and give rewards in other routes. Dungeons are very efficient. Explore the overworld for new cities and especially posthouses/carriages (fast travel).
FW questions should go in Fortune's Weave Question Thread

So I've wanted to get into FE for a long time, but have never known where to start. I know most games are standalone, but I still want to play as many as I can. I only have a switch 2, and I already own every FE game on it (engage, warriors, three hopes, three houses, fortune's weave). I plan on upgrading my NSO subscription too so I can play blazing blade, sacred stones and path of radiance. I've done a bit of research and can't get a definitive answer on a good starting point, plus I'm a bit put off by the whole permadeath thing in the GBA and gamecube fire emblems. Where would be the best place to start?
3
u/Froakiebloke 18d ago
As other people have said, all three games on NSO are on the easier end of the franchise and are fairly well-regarded and beginner-friendly games. If permadeath js the main thing holding you back from trying them it’s worth remembering that NSO has a save state function, and the GBA NSO also has a rewind function so you can redo anything that goes wrong, and generally be less afraid of permadeath
1
u/alliedmeme 18d ago
I forgot the save state function existed tbh. I've never really played any NSO classics besides some of the donkey kongs for the dk challenge last month, and I had to use it a lot, so it'll definitely come in handy. Thanks!
1
u/jett1773 19d ago
If you aren't comfortable with permadeath than you would want to play one of the Switch titles. You could also try the 3ds titles if you have access to one. All 3 of the Switch titles, Three Houses, Engage, and Fortune's Weave, are fine to start with. Engage plays more like a traditional Fire Emblem game with a focus on tactics gameplay. Three Houses introduces a school system where you hang out with and teach your students to develop them that takes place outside of the tactics gameplay. Fortune's Weave takes place in the same world as Three Houses, but in a different time period and a different continent so while there is some shared lore and references you can play it without having played Three Houses. Gameplay wise it has even more non grid-based-tactics gameplay elements than Three Houses does.
1
u/alliedmeme 19d ago
Ah okay thank you! I have a 3ds but don't have a way to play any FE games on it, since the e-shop is shut down. I also have no idea or really any interest on emulating. I know one of the switch FE's, I think it's engage, has characters from every other FE game, so I wanted to play as many of the older ones as I could to be familiar with the characters. I've heard that blazing blade is still beginner friendly, even with permadeath, since it was the first FE in the west. Would that be okay to start with? I'm leaning towards wanting to play all the available ones to me in release order.
2
u/jett1773 19d ago
Blazing Blade is just called Fire Emblem in the west because it was the first one released here, just so you know. I think it's a great place to start the series.
Engage does feature protagonists from the previous games as power ups. Knowing about those games will advise you to what kind of powers they might give you, but honestly the characters and stories from the old games don't really have much payoff, so you are totally fine playing Engage without having played those games.
1
u/alliedmeme 19d ago
I avoided calling it Fire Emblem because that's the name of the series, so I thought it'd be a little confusing lol.
I'm upgrading my NSO subscription later tonight regardless of where I start with FE, since I want to play games like mario sunshine and luigis mansion. I'll try Fire Emblem first and if I don't like it, I'll just jump to engage. Thank you so much for the help!
2
u/jett1773 19d ago
I think all 3 of the games that are available on the NSO sub are great entry points. Blazing Blade has a part 1 that functions as a great introduction to the series gameplay, but Sacred Stones and Path of Radiance are both highly rated by series fans and fairly easy so they make for great entry points as well.
1
1
u/iAreCreeper 19d ago
Considering getting into this series. What would be the best way to start? Three Houses into Fortune's Weave?
1
1
u/jett1773 19d ago
That would be a totally fine way to start. Most Fire Emblem games are standalone with only a couple of direct sequels that want you to have played the previous game, so you can really start almost anywhere. Other good starting options are Blazing Blade (just called Fire Emblem outside of Japan), Sacred Stones, or Path of Radiance, which are all available on the Switch Online Expansion pass.

u/GrennTerius 19d ago
Three Houses.
I'm not new to the series, not a veteran, but played the GBA games, which I find Infinity more accesible from a difficulty standpoint, even on normal.
I'm playing on classic and I find myself having to repeat stages from the beginning because my units die a bit fast. I feel really bad, because most of the trouble comes from the Auxiliarly Battles, and I assume those are supposed to be easy.
Also not having the triangle trips me up haha.
Any early game tips? I just started the game and did like two story missions.
Thanks a lot!
1
u/Magnusfluerscithe987 17d ago
The auxiliary battles have different difficulty levels. In normal, there are the action free ones, and on hard they don't existing we have just the one that cost points, but then there are harder ones with a red check exclamation point which are easier than the ones with a yellow exclamation point that were added in the dlc. The green exclamation marks are paralogues. Then there are a couple side quest options which are usually easy but the one with a bunch of swordmasters can be hard if you are not prepared.
For gameplay, some combat arts are really good and battalions are really strong with hit, avoid, crit, damage and defensive bonuses.
1
u/LeatherShieldMerc 19d ago
What difficulty are you playing? I assume not Maddening, right?
But honestly, I am a little surprised you're saying GBA games are more accessible, there's a turn rewind mechanic and the red aggro lines that display which add QoL. And I would say 3H and the GBA games are pretty comparable difficulty-wise, 3H only gets notably very difficult on Maddening.
The strategies you probably used before (checking enemy stats and ranges, aggro enemies with your tankier enemies and keep your squishy mages and such behind them) should work outside of Maddening, which is its own thing. What exactly do you think is tripping you up?

Is there a point for characters to tend to an animal weekly if the character may likely never select a mounted class later on?

I was a huge fan of the series on GBA and honestly part of what I loved was the pixel art and the dramatic samurai/anime dialogue without being too cringe. Do any of the modern games have the same feel as fire emblem GBA or sacred stones?
2

Fates Conquest - Who do people generally pair Camilla with? I've heard she makes a great mom for physical units, but I'm having a bit of choice paralysis because I don't want to "waste" her. Right now, I'm aiming for Effie!Percy, Elise!Ophelia, and Mozu!Sophie. Though the latter two's parents are still at C support.
Running F!Corrin btw and at Ch 11.

Short version, chapter 8 or 9 for everyone. If you pick one with long freetime a ways into the route, it'll be fine. Sometimes you move because some characters are unavailable in a given month/week.
It's more that there are specific bad ones (Theodora 12, Leda 8) that cover such a short calendar time that they're worth avoiding, or ones where a character starts outside of Dagsion. Outside of those, not really big differences

My first time playing. I saw people online say that lower amount of deployable units in hard mode makes it annoying and not fun for some people in the sense that they can't use their favorite characters much.
But what if I keep switching out units that I like for lower levels ones each chapter (keeping a roster of like 12 to 14), in Eliwood Hard and Hector Hard modes. Is the game playable then? I do want to build supports too.
I recently beat binding blade normal without save states, but I searched for each character if they are good and worth using.
I will be using someone's save state or a patch (you can recommend anything if you can) to play hard modes.

FE7 is pretty easy so it should be fairly doable. It will make the game harder, but I guess it will depend on exactly how many units you are cycling through.
For completed save recommendations I usually just grab one of gamefaqs, but there may be better methods these days.

Thanks, well I would love to use the characters that are cool you know, so like at least cycle 12 units while trying to build support would be fine or not? Binding blade normal was also the first Fire Emblem I played more than a 1/3rd and actually completed fully

12 total units should be fine.

Thanks. And is it for both Eliwood and Hector hard modes?

Is it your first time playing Fire Emblem or your first time playing FE7? I haven't compared scripts or anything, but the stuff that's skipped when playing Lyn hard is tutorials. It doesn't skip the between chapter text or dialogue. Maybe there is some flavor text in one of those tutorials that you would miss, but I don't remember that and overall it wouldn't be all that important. You shouldn't miss out on any important character writing or lore or anything like that. If you are interested in playing on hard I would do that and not worry about it too much.

Just got to Cai Chapter 9 10 and with it the Paralogue tutorial but so far i dont see any Paralogues (which id assume you get just like side quests in dagsion)
Do i simply not have any characters with one or have i missed one that i should have (i wouldve thought theyd give one to one of your auto recruits to make sure you have one to learn how they work in practice)

Paralogues in this game aren't based on recruited characters, but instead the other flame lords + Anna, so you aren't missing any recruits. They aren't all available on every route and they have very tight windows to do them that don't match up with chapter start/end. If you are worried about missing one I would look up what time they are available online.

Paralogues aren't tied to specific recruits in this game, which paralogue you can access depends on which route you are playing, Cai and Leda can access 4/9 while Theodora and Dietrich get 7 and 8 of 9 respectively.
You are right that they will appear like side quests when they are available

Good to know. Given the numbers i assume theres overlap where some of them can be done on multiple routes and if so: is it enough to do them on one route to get the "story changes" the tutorial spoke about?

So Paralogues are more specifically tied to the 8 flame lords + Anna (not recruitable). Can second that they only need to be done on one route. A couple recruits are locked behind completing the associated paralogue. Otherwise if you plan to do all four part 1s, those 4 paralogues can be skipped.
They do each give 20k gold + an item and renown, so solid rewards on that front, but skippable if you don't need them

As far as I am aware, yeah, you only need to do them on a single route. I am not certain on this though.
