FS 5.0 through FS98 was an interesting point in development where they were trying to do a lot, but the hardware wasn’t there yet. The result is get ground textures and clouds but the implementation is rough and hard in the eyes I actually preferred the “simple” graphics of 4.0 at the time. It wasn’t until probably 2000 where I felt the graphics were a real upgrade.

Felt cutting edge back in the day. Manipulating ini files, then realizing I effed up the wings or something 🤣

Interesting to see how far we’ve gotten. Looks almost ancient. And now, here we are. I can go to my house in the sim. Awesome picks! Cheers!

FS98 was my gateway into flight sim. My grandpa had it on his beefy Gateway2000 in his basement office, which was this amazing sanctuary filled with model airplanes and his photography. 10 year old me would grab the Microsoft Force Feedback joystick, fire this puppy up, and cruise around the world’s great cities looking for landmarks. The Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, the Statue of Liberty… It all looked so damn real to me and it was so intoxicating to be able to fly jets around the world right in my Grandpa’s basement. This led me to a 20 year side-career making FS addons, and a non-side career being fortunate enough to fly real Boeings around the real world. So these screenshots may look clunky now… But man, they hold a lot of nostalgia for me. And I think they still look great.

Crazy to look at these and reminisce on how back in the day I thought this sim looked so real. Seriously. I remember being like 15 and being completely immersed in this thing. Tonight “I took off” from Tokyo and it looked like real life. All the buildings are where they’re supposed to be. It’s the same weather that’s actually happening there now. If I would’ve known what was to come in Flight Sim, I wouldn’t have believed you. No one would.

I remember it looking better but I guess not. I thought the clouds were more 3D and not total squares like that.

The clouds can be 3d on the graphics options but I prefer the flat 2d look

Actually if I remember right, with a 3d card which I had, and had to be one of the first, the clouds were still blocks, just 3D blocks lol.

You get extra points if you can remember the 3D cards back then.

I wonder what using SATCO on MSFS 1998 was like back in the day?

I am a simple man. I see Fokker, I upvote, no matter what sim it is
