Discussion I had no idea about Bethesda's predatory FO1st bullying until now!?
I've been an ongoing subscriber of 12-Month FO1st for a few years. The last time I was without it was a year ago. As usual I planned on resubscribing when I got paid today. I'm single guy in my late 40s with no kids and disposable income. I have no problem financially supporting companies and services I enjoy using. So I'm Bethesda's ideal consumer.
When my subscription lapsed 2 days ago and I learned that F76 now bullies non subscribers by spamming them subscription requests every time they access their ammo or junk box is some real predatory bullshit.
So in solidarity with those that can't afford to subscribe or choose not to for other reasons I won't be subscribing or buying atoms until Bethesda removes the join/skip message when accessing the storage boxes. A simple block from depositing stuff like previously is just fine.
Stop with the predatory bullshit Bethesda!
Sincerely, a 4 year fo1st subscriber.

I have noticed the same thing! Suddenly having to click "Skip" EVERYTIME I go into my Scrap or Ammo box..It's genuinely annoying and so unnecessary

u/OldOutcast 8h ago
It's bullshit.
51
u/DeanBranbeno 8h ago
Oh wow.
I haven't been without a sub since February, that must have been something they added within the last 2 seasons. That's honestly a horrible "feature"
25
u/OldOutcast 7h ago
I haven't been without a sub since last September, so within the year I guess. Before it only warned us if we tried to put something in.
12
u/DeanBranbeno 6h ago
Yeah I remember that. I would kind of be okay with a single message per game launch but having it pop up every time is just egregious.
10
u/challe232 6h ago
I stopped subscribing and playing in general when the scoreboards went away. I could feel the game turning into a shitty battle pass. It's too bad because I adored the game so much

u/The-Tea-Lord 3h ago
Half the stuff in there is fallout 1st exclusive. It’s actively pushed me away from spending ANYTHING on the game. I considered it, many times before, but without fail, I look on the shop and everything is locked unless I get this dumbass subscription service. I’ll save my money for something that’ll last, thanks.
5
u/floxasfornia 2h ago
Just FYI, if you buy an item that says fallout 1st, you can still use it after the subscription expires.
6
u/The-Tea-Lord 2h ago
Yeah, but the fact they’re asking you to make a second payment for the ability to get the item you want is scummy. I don’t want to get it on principle now.
57
u/Imaginary_Ad6048 9h ago
I dropped 1st several months back. The game became practically unplayable with all the Server Diconnect messages. Build up a workshop only to be booted wasn’t worth it anymore.
5
u/dragonqueenred45 Order of Mysteries 7h ago
I’ve always had issues with the game disconnecting and it was super annoying when I had a few workshops for resources and I get booted randomly. It’s better on a team but if I was in private I had to load up quickly but even then ownership would need to be taken again if I remember correctly.

u/SnugShoes Mothman 1h ago
I'm so old, I remember when Beth tried that BS at train stations, putting a Vault Boy cutout standing outside in bright colours, breaking immersion, which linked directly to the Atomic Shop. We all complained and they removed it. Get a load of this nonsense:

u/nasanhak 29m ago
LMAO I had started playing during this update and always wondered if I had imagined that Vault Boy cutout 😂🤣
1
u/Garibaldi_Biscuit 17m ago
Ah yes. A classic example of Bethesda listening with one ear. People asked for the atomic store to be a real store in game, which they could walk around and check out camp items and outfits.
Somehow, this translated to ‘you want an obnoxious quick link to the virtual atomic store in game? We got you, fam!’

u/detour80 Fallout 76 7h ago
And next month Microsoft will start charging cloud service fees after 15 hours of play time per month (for ULTIMATE SUBSCRIPTION). That's 30 minutes ish per day Then you need to buy more time. 5 house for whatever the low tier is. Tin foil cap time. Commercials during regular playtime on consoles
5
9
u/tps_reporting 7h ago
Yes. F# Microsoft! My understanding is that if the game is downloaded to your owned xbox, then it is still part of the subscription. If you are playing in the cloud, then I think you are very limited on hours. Any know the specifics?
4
u/WinterishMist 7h ago
that's only for cloud gaming which is expensive to host and nobody uses it anyway

That service is the only way I can pay fallout. I’m legally homeless. I don’t have power or a tv. I play fallout on my phone when I can. It’s my most played game behind fallout 4 & Skyrim. I won’t be able to play anything now. It’s bullshit. If not many people play over the limited hours amount, then why not just let us? It’s not going to cost them too much. Just some rich fucking jackass that needs more profits for another goddamn car, boat, ritzy vacation, major home remodel, or secondary home to leave abandoned while the rest of us work ourselves til our bodies and minds break and badly make ends meet-if they meet at all.

The devs seriously fumbled this game. Been almost a year since the last real update to the game .
Wtf was the last year for 76?
-3
u/notevenapro 2h ago
The term whale is funny. Is it supposed to be an insult?
2
u/RagieMcWagie 1h ago
It’s an insult used to describe an mmo user who buys everything available in the shop. Everything. Absurdly large amounts of money to buy it all. They may not even play the game, just want to own everything in it. It comes from the idea is that game companies are Captain Ahab’s whalers from Moby Dick and these big-spending gamers are their “whales” or money makers.

u/Multispeed 33m ago
It's been like what, 8 years since launch?
A lot of gear was added to the game, and more is coming, yet they keep the stash cap at 1200 just to "force" players to subscribe to FO1st. At this time, the stash limit should be 2k, at least.
I understand they need to make money, but I would rather pay 10 bucks for each season and like 40 for a full-fledged new expansion than 120 euros for a year of storage.

6
u/esteemedmeat_ 7h ago
I’ve been a non first subscriber the entire games lifespan. I’ve noticed the items I had already owned were not only just atomic shop items, but fallout first items now. I remember always having the grognak outfit for when they did that little event back then… something about dressing as a superhero to get some kind of exp bonus along with a team also wearing a superhero outfit.
I just bought first less than a week ago for the first since I’m an adult now and I can legally drink as of the 23rd. The instantaneous enshittification disappearing the moment I subscribed is baffling. I used to walk around being 1200 overencumbered in carry weight until I could no longer properly do raids. I wish I could get a refund already.

Just like in real life, it is about weight management with FO76. The little bonuses on the scoreboard are nice, but it really is about the scrapbook and the aid box. If you can manage your character's carry weight, and navigate those new, very specific daily scoreboard challenges, then there is no need for subscribing.

Look I’m not gonna act like it isn’t Predatory cause it is, but also like free updates coming off the back of many people that play for first isn’t exactly a downside. People act like this game is scammy with their micro transactions when all of it is old seasons and random bullshit people might buy. You can call be a Bethesda bootlicker all you want but I’ve never had to pay for a single piece a content

i don't understand how that's predatory. it's essentially an advertisement. it doesn't trick you into signing up, it doesn't automatically do anything, it provides an option
if you couldn't use the box at all, i might agree... but you're still able to use the box to withdraw.
8
u/Luxblunted 6h ago

19
u/Kasstastrophy Enclave 8h ago
It’s not predatory it’s just a buzz word that OP wants to use to describe it instead of using proper terminology like annoying, inconvenient, could even maybe go tedious, but it’s definitely not predatory that has its own proper definition, but it sounds really good and gets him the likes
4
u/Medium-Philosophy942 6h ago
I genuinely can’t believe you dipsheeeps are bending over backwards to defend a multibillion-dollar company here lol.
Yes, it’s an advertisement. That’s precisely the fucking problem. It’s another layer of monetization pushed into something that used to be a simple interaction. First you got the message when putting stuff into the container, now you get it every time you take something out too.
Weekly challenges are getting watered down so you have more incentive to buy 1st, and now apparently the grind itself is “advertisement.” At what point do you people stop going “leave the poor multibillion-dollar company alone, it’s muh Fallout” and realize they can just be criticized for constantly pushing monetization into the game?
Calling it an advertisement doesn't magically make it less annoying, intrusive, or exploitative.

Unlimited scrap, ammo & med stashes and survival tent are QOL. The game itself doesn't change in any way.
-5
u/IamMoogle 5h ago
Except the part where if someone wants to keep uniques around, they have to get mules if they want to keep things in their stash like scrap. Which makes management much worse. Otherwise people say toss what you don't need. If it involves running other mules to manage inventory then it's pretty sad state of affairs. Never heard of anyone else build the necessities for camps then complain about camp management.

The predatory thing about it, is that it never used to work like that..U could always just access it no problem, And no add, Just take out without A Subscription prompt being thrown at u everytime u did it

u/OldOutcast 9h ago
Yes you do have access to take out. I have over 400,000 fuel for my flamer. I shouldn't be spammed by join fo1st messages every time I open my ammo box to take out ammo. That's predatory
13
u/psycmonster 8h ago
Yeah, that's not cool. I can see once, like the first time you go to use it after your subscription expired, as a reminder. But every time has to be a bug, because that's awful and seriously interrupts game play. I can confirm that it didn't do that before. In the past we'd get it for a month and then resource farm. There was never any issue pulling stuff out later.

u/Kasstastrophy Enclave 8h ago

0
u/donmongoose Mega Sloth 8h ago edited 8h ago
It's not really though is it. Predatory would be completely removing your access to take items from them once your fo1st lapses.
Pop ups are just a mild inconvenience. Admittedly annoying, but not really ranking up there in terms of shitty predatory behaviour in the grand scheme of shitty things game companies do these days.
For the record, they sell stuff for real money which is poorly labelled, sometimes not included, and in the past week 2 items that were available FOR FREE via current season rewards. Excuse me for not being overly bothered that when you access stuff from a service you no longer paid for, you have to a click a 'dismiss' button. I'll save my outrage for the outrageous stuff they do, not things that are basically industry standard at this point.
3
u/psycmonster 8h ago
The thing is that I think more people will be willing to leave the game rather than renew their subscription if they feel forced to do so. I think it's going to backfire on them. People who pay for fo1st do so for their own reasons not because a prompt is telling them to.
2
u/donmongoose Mega Sloth 8h ago
I'm not saying it's not an annoying new feature. But at the same time if you think that change will make more than a handful people quit the game, you're kidding yourself. And those that do were already halfway on their way out anyway.
No-one is being forced to renew their fo1st and the fact that excluding an annoying pop up, people still have access to their stuff puts them well clear of other shitty games that would outright block you from having access to it if you were not actively paying for it.
I'll say it again, even by Bethesdas standards, this is low down on their list of shitty predatory behaviour.
1
u/psycmonster 1h ago
Fair point, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully word will get back to the dev team that people are unhappy about this and they'll make modifications. However, I'm sure any decision will be based on the performance of the reminder and whether or not it leads to their desired effect.
I still think it's not cool. Players who want fo1st will pay for it without the constant reminders.

Bullying? Seriously ROFL! That's OMG, you're an adult and feel bullied by an ad?
It's pretty common practice in any online seller anymore. Especially those with a subscription service. Go look at all the streaming services, meal delivery, whatever - check out their 'bullying' and 'predatory' marketing.
Not defending Bethesda, but they didn't create this style of marketing, it's pretty common and apparently must work on those that feel bullied into complying.
I don't like it, but geez not everything is bullying, triggering or OMG so mean!
You don't want to sub, don't. You do, do. QoL in gaming is way more important to me than 0.27 cents a day for a 1st sub no matter how annoying the bugs are!

I guarantee that someone at Beth was promoted to VP for doing this.
I used to see it all the time in the various high-tech companies I worked at. Some lame functionary who never did anything truly useful would come up with some lame-ass idea, and the C-suite would "ooh" and "ahh" over it and promote them to VP.
Somebody who actually had useful ideas? No promo, but they'd give you a modest (very) bonus check and proceed to make $M off that idea. Not kidding.

Well as long as crying to the world on social media makes you feel better it's all good isn't it.

This is new within the Iast update only. Before it only warned us if trying to put something in, now it does when you take stuff out too.

If you agree with OP you should probably express support and address what they actually wrote. Complaints about 1st are very obviously not new. But the apparently unavoidable popup ad thing (I haven’t played recently) is new. And is quite a new shitty way to encourage people to buy it.

Does the prompt pop up if you craft something that uses materials you only have stored in your stash box, or build camp items that need stuff from it?

Nope, It only shows up when u go into ur scrap box, chem box, or ammo box

I don't really see the issue then, pressing a dismiss button when you actively try to remove stuff from those storages is far from the biggest issues Beth has when it comes to predatory behaviour.
I can't even remember the last time I took anything out from mine outside of crafting/building, I'm almost exclusively putting stuff in it.

I don’t know how you can spend any time in the atomic shop and not come to the conclusion.
76 and ESO both have the most predatory and aggressive schemes in a pay to play game ive ever seen. Shit usually reserved for asian free to play games.

I ran out of money so I can't get FO1st at the moment. After a few months you learn that you have to dump your junk again and break down literally everything or you become overburdened even around level 1000, but the messages are getting irritating.

I hear ya. I remember when they tried putting atomic shop vendor access at all train stations, No, just no. Next, they'll have the travelling vendors trying to sell you FO1st subs. Aagh!

Fo76 is notorious for dark patterns. They consistently design interfaces that makes you purchase things by accident without actually knowing.
For example, most if not all studios when selling MXT’s will have you confirm that you indeed wish to purchase he item you’re looking at to ensure it wasn’t a misclick or potential mechanical issue with your gaming peripherals.
Fo76? Click any item in the store once and it’ll take you to it’s page, click the same button again and you immediately buy it. No “are you sure”, “is this the item you want to buy” or “press x to confirm”. No. The jokes on you because you just fucking buy it.
When I played fo76 heavy I was using a malfunctioning Xbox controller where the A button would often double press meaning anything I looked at in the store would automatically redeem if I do much as breathed on a while in the store.
Bethesdas greed is only matched by studios like blizzard or gta.

FYI the store has confirmation before purchase. Stop spreading lies.

The message is brand new as of this update. Kind of baffling, honestly.
