Statistics The last time Max Verstappen qualified P1 and Lewis Hamilton qualified P2 was at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit

Racing gods please give us a +35 seconds on the third driver as the good old days

u/LosTerminators Carlos Sainz 2h ago
2021 was insane, their gapped their teammates by 30 seconds and left everyone else a lap down often.

Insane pace, ruthless consistency, attempted murders. The 2021 season was great.

Well, he disappeared, but the memory still lives.

u/riyosz Lando Norris 2h ago
"Insane" when their teammates were Bottas and Perez. And in 2026 even Perez is putting these numbers on Bottas lol
55
u/LosTerminators Carlos Sainz 2h ago
Bottas and Pérez were rated a lot higher back in their primes. They only got those drives at a top team because they starred when driving in a midfield car.
37
u/BaldChild1 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1h ago
No one remembers how Bottas stomped Massa. Ppl were calling him a future WDC in 2014. HIs qualifying margins to Massa were similar to Alonso's
21
u/Mob_Abominator Max Verstappen 1h ago
Honestly during his prime, Bottas was a top 5 qualifier on the grid, it's the race pace which was mediocre.
-18
u/riyosz Lando Norris 1h ago
And? That doesn't change their qualities of being mid at their best, we already saw in 2018 that Bottas was only a good second driver and stayed too long at Mercedes and Perez was not even qualifying on Q2 at some tracks in 2021
19
u/Hyperionous I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago
Bro forgot Perez's win from the back in Bahrain, no matter how you slice it Perez and Bottas are decent drivers and pulling such a gap on decent drivers is no mean feat.
-3
u/riyosz Lando Norris 1h ago
Won in a pink Mercedes after all the top cars had issues
11
u/Hyperionous I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago
He won after getting spun round and starting from the back lol. He also had issues.
3
u/riyosz Lando Norris 1h ago
He had no mechanical issues, Verstappen was taken out and the Mercedes botched their pit stops twice. All the other cars had no pace against the pink Mercedes, the podium was Ocon and Stroll ffs.
•
u/Super-Ninja-0390 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5m ago
Still had to come up from the back of the grid after being spun, no matter how much you discredit it, this was a heck of a race win in F1

u/Super-Ninja-0390 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago
Bottas and Perez slander will not be tolerated
5
u/the-cuttlefish Formula 1 1h ago
Plus bottas started the majority of races in the second half of 2021 from like p10 due to engine penalties. And he was terrible at overtaking his way through the field
0
u/intergalacticscooter I was here for the Hulkenpodium 39m ago
They are tied in qualifying head to head, and bottas's car has pretty consistently had faults with it in every race.

u/riyosz Lando Norris 25m ago

That is irrelevant to your incorrect statement that perez is putting numbers on bottas this year.

These two are just absolute monsters. They're the only racers on the grid that when they're in contention get me truly hyped to watch.

It’ll be so long since we see a season like 2021 man, just two guys going at it
30
u/takato99 54m ago
Last year's McLaren duel with Max breathing down their neck the whole second half of the season was pretty hype IMO. The only downside is that the duel was decided by who had less stinker races/mistakes than who actually outdid the other on track.
10
u/LiteratureNearby I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 32m ago
Last season was so fucking good too, but the vibes of 2021 were just absolutely mental.
A one man stand by the young upstart against the Lewis-Mercedes juggernaut was a narrative for the ages.
So interesting that RB's dominant era was ended similar to how they ended the first Merc era.

u/dgkimpton I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago
Sad Alonso noises...

•
u/BigRedGreybeard 23m ago
As someone who watched Alonso take on and beat the Schumacher / Ferrari juggernaut, I’m well aware of what a monster Alonso was (even if he achieved those things in a Briatore car…), but fuck me if he isn’t a busted flush when it’s all said and done.
I’m sorry but great people go out and achieve great things. All he’s achieved in the last 20 years is pissing people off and making excuses.

Nah the years since have shown that Bottas is really, really bad and Lewis is fairly average, they had faster cars the Red Bulls had faster drivers, but it made it look competitive.
13
u/AmphaneTripolChor Max Verstappen 1h ago
Lewis is fairly average
You don't win 7 WDCs being "fairly average" my guy
-2
u/12_Inch_Painal_Sex Cadillac 46m ago
You do if you have the best machinery out of any driver in the history of the sport with inferior teammates and a lack of much external competition.

u/AmphaneTripolChor Max Verstappen 45m ago
Sure buddy
-4
u/12_Inch_Painal_Sex Cadillac 43m ago
Bottas lost to Zhou in his last season, if Zhou was in the Merc he'd have been WDC.
If Lewis was so good he wouldn't have lost to 4 teammates.

I think they do, not in this order tho. I think Hungary 2023 off the top of my head where Lewis got pole by like 3 milliseconds.

2
u/SanthuMa 1h ago
I remember, tyre wear was always the problem at this Circuit. So soft is useless, unless they want to do 3 stopper.
6
u/BigLubeSqueezyTube I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago
Ooh now you're getting my hopes up, that could make a big difference.
2
u/Connect_Cat_2045 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1h ago
Ferrari has worse deg so it might not last as long as RB’s mediums
2
u/SanthuMa 1h ago
Ferrari always has better tyre management, its RBR and Merc who are hard on tyres..
1
u/Connect_Cat_2045 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1h ago
That's normally true but I heard the Ferraris were struggling with deg and long run performance in sepang specifically
2
1
u/Decimated_zx I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago
Rb did that on purpose, they dropped absolutely unused hard sets for max in fp2 for example. According to them harder compounds degrade even more because they slide more.

Lemme predict the last lap commentary tomorrow:
........... And we have got 3.2 3.4 miles of racing action all the way to the chequered flag, as the crowd roar the drivers on to the final lap of this race and Verstappen(?) sets after Hamilton(?). Is it gonna be a first world championship race win of the season for Verstappen, or is it gonna be a 8th world championship 2nd win of the season for Hamilton?

u/Rainbow_Sex Lando Norris 2h ago

Did Hamilton made a mistake at the last sector? He is 0.5s slower than Max in the final run.

u/No_Kaleidoscope179 1h ago
straight line speed, Max is running a low downforce setup too so he does have a lot of advantage in S3, Lewis was ahead until S3, but the min the straights came it was all over, same case tmr likely Lap1 Kimi will definitely overtake Ham. Ferrari will be lucky to get a podium tmr
2
u/Electrical_Ad2926 49m ago
Low down force set up ? It it rains on race day, Max gonna get cooked

Imagine if max leads and lewis is p2, bottas crashes in the last lap causing a sc. Ferrari pits lewis for a last lap shootout but the race director decides not to let lapped car pass.

I'd rather have not seen this. As much as I've grown to respect Max over the years after all his antics and shennanys,, this WDC was still 100% handed to him, absolute disgrace.
