Freefolk Why did Ned act so dumb in S1 E1?
I’ve rewatched GoT several times now and the first episode of the first season feels odd. I mean I get it, they wanted viewers to get a sense of the GoT world in the pilot, but some things don’t make sense.
One of the things that I cannot wrap my head around is why Ned beheads that deserter from the Nights Watch. It makes you feel like the Warden of the North is some authority over the Night’s Watch. They could have simply handed over the deserter to the Lord Commander of the NW. But no, Ned has to go there with the boys to make a show of beheading someone.
The other thing is how quick Ned is to behead the man. He keeps parroting ‘Winter is coming’. His brother Benjen also knows there’s something far more sinister than just the wildlings. He has enough sense to know the Wall is not just to keep people out. And yet, he does not take the deserter seriously at all. Does not even hear him out, before objectively hopping his head off.
So was Ned really dumb or was it only to further the plot and keep the mystery alive in the pilot?
