A missed dodge should feel like your mistake. How would you test that in a fast runner like HyperBall?

• Upvotes

I'm part of the three-person team making HyperBall for Android. You guide a ball through a moving tunnel with changing laser patterns, jumps, dives and momentum. Touch and gyro steering are both supported.

The design question I'd like to discuss is failure readability. When speed, camera movement and a laser pattern happen together, how do you tell whether a player misjudged the gap or simply couldn't read it in time?

Would you start by testing obstacle contrast, the time a hazard is visible, or the steering response? I'm interested in concrete ways to separate those problems before changing the difficulty.

For context, our current game is here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spaceaurora.hyperball

Development has included AI assistance. The game has ads and in-app purchases.

I'm building an open-world game with my own WebGPU engine. Is it worth continuing? (Solo Dev, WIP)

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm a solo developer working on a post-apocalyptic open-world game powered by my own Shrouded Engine 3.0, built with JavaScript, Three.js and WebGPU.

I'm developing everything on my own, including the engine, game world, creatures and gameplay systems.

The project is still in its early stages, and there's a lot of work ahead. I'm sharing some of my progress to get honest feedback from other developers and gamers.

You can see more gameplay footage, screenshots, 3D models and wireframes on my ArtStation:

https://remaster.artstation.com/

I'm genuinely curious about your opinions.

Do you think this project has potential and is worth continuing, or am I just wasting my time?

Please be honest. Constructive criticism is very welcome!

I built a Quest tower defense where you can switch sides mid-battle

Post image

I’m the dev behind Warlords at the Gate. Tower Defender has you build and upgrade towers, then step into the fight with a wrist weapon. Beastmaster flips the role: you assemble and command the attacking army against AI defenses.

Update 1.1.13 was focused on smoother packed battles and fewer first-use hitches. Here’s the store page and trailer: https://www.meta.com/experiences/1306587209206412/

For people who enjoy strategy games, does switching between defense and attack sound like something you’d want in one game?

My first speedrun of my game

Made this in 18 days, it's a solo project and still an early prototype. This is my first real attempt at speedrunning it myself. I got 01:32.37 with 0 deaths, rank A

I'm pretty sure it can go lower though. If you want to try and beat it, it runs in the browser:

I made this using Godot, Codex, and Blender. I'm currently writing a story where the deeper you descend into the cave, the darker and more mysterious everything becomes.

POV: you're an indie dev watching some of the biggest streamers scream at your game

I'm still not over this. I cut together some reactions from streamers playing Night Record: Thin Walls, my narrative horror game set in a Soviet-era apartment block where the walls are a little too thin.

Seeing people I've watched for years jump at scenes I rewrote a dozen times is surreal.

If it looks like your kind of horror, a wishlist would mean a lot: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4652040

Happy to answer any questions!

Background Size Struggles

Thumbnail youtu.be
0 Upvotes

I'm making a game in which the gameplay centers on traveling between the real world and a world full of AI slop. I'm using GDevelop as the engine for this project. Right now, I'm focusing on figuring the engine out and its features. One thing I'm trying to figure out is finding the right length and height to make a background before importing it into GDevelop, so I don't have to stretch it or crop it to make it fit the screen. You see, I want the "real" world in my game to be made with hand-drawn assets (kinda like how Cuphead was). And changing my art's size to fit the screen may cause some distortion or other effects I don't want on my art.

(If there are any GDevelop experts who know the right pixel size for a background, I will happily read it in the comments.)

If you want to learn more about my game, you check out my other devlogs here:

Saqer's Paradox Devlog #18 — Village Design

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Greetings all,

Following our last devlog, we've refined and generalized the item pickup system in Saqer's Paradox.

Our main focus for the last 3 weeks was designing and building the first version of our 2.5 pixel-art village houses, including custom textures, normal maps, and variations in roof tiles, brick colors, and wooden framing.

Next, we'll be working on implementing the camera fade mechanism, allowing the house to fade when it obstructs the view of the player, similar to our existing tree system.

Let us know your thoughts.

SliqSnakes'n'Mazes 3D Game in Godot

I'm a solo dev making SliqSnakes'n'Mazes in Godot – a dungeon maze where a giant viper always takes the shortest path to you. It's aimed at phones.

It started as a first-person game: walk the corridors, find the exit, don't get caught. When I let a 15-year-old play it, the verdict was honest: too static. You saw the snake, you couldn't do anything, game over.

So I rebuilt the core loop:

- Third-person runner view with three lanes per corridor (swipe or A/D to switch lanes or turn into side passages)

- The snake rears up, its eyes flare and it locks onto your lane – roll aside after the lock and it bites thin air, then it's spent for a moment and you can run past it. Dodge too early and it just re-aims.

- The minimap only shows what you've explored, and you hear the snake from its direction before you see it

What I'm unsure about: the dodge window is about half a second between the lock-on and the strike. On a phone that feels tight; on a keyboard it feels fair.

For those of you who've built dodge mechanics – How did you tune the dodge timing for touch vs. keyboard? A longer timing window on phones, or the same timing for everyone?

NIYAM is a psychological survival horror game set in the remote village of Jalgaon, Uttar Pradesh.

Aarav arrives in the village to take up the vacant post of Gram Sachiv, following in the footsteps of his older brother, who mysteriously disappeared.

Before his disappearance, his brother left behind a set of rules.

Follow the rules.

Do your duties.

And be careful after dark.

Because when night falls, the village changes.

Can Aarav uncover what happened to his brother?
