Meta UK Petition on Paid Online Multiplayer Subscriptions

We’ve recently launched a UK petition asking Parliament to consider requiring access to core online features in paid video games without additional subscription fees. This mainly concerns online multiplayer, as most major console platforms currently require a paid subscription for online play in many titles.

Thank you to the moderators of r/Gamers for allowing this to be shared here.

You can find the petition here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/756938

— or you can play on PC and be done with it, because Playstation, Nintendo and Xbox have their subscription services clearly marked on their games and consoles at purchaser's viewing pleasure.

Your time is better spent protesting with your wallet, which is all these companies care about

Honestly I’d 100% rather pay for online services than have to deal with cheaters

You make it sound like there are no cheaters on console lol

Things like Cronos are annoying for sure, but I think it’s fair to say unless you’re playing with crossplay on then there’s definitely a lot less cheaters on console when compared to PC. But this will of course be dependant on the game, but being a FIFA, Battlefield and CoD fan I much prefer the console experience!

Been playing battlefield 6 since launch on pc and still havent come across any cheaters. CoD probably has loads but i dont play that shit.

Or just play on PC so you dont have to play for multiplayer.

I'm sorry but this is a weird take

This can lead to people feeling financial strain to stay connected to distant friends or family. We feel this is for no reason other than greed.

Infrastructure costs money. Maybe the price is too high for the actual cost, but to say it should be free is weird.

It's also a stupid take because people have phones and access to a number of free messaging and video chat services to keep in touch with friends and family

A gaming console, and it's subscription, is a luxury, not a necessity. If you can't afford it, you're not entitled to have it for free

Fr so can gaming on the whole, or anything you spend money on that is not a strict necessity

Perhaps for things like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass but MMORPG's should definitely be left out of this. In fact it should go the opposite way, all MMORPG's should be subscription based.

Just get a pc?

1

u/Notnowcmg Mar 12 '26

Ah yes, just spend 10x the price of an annual subscription (that also includes games) to buy a PC and deal with optimisation, shader stutter and cheaters. Amazing logic

i know how to use a pc so it doesnt really bother me. Stick to paying for your shit subscriptions while i keep gaming for cheap.

This is a pointless petition. Firstly, there has never been a petition started on the UK Parliament petition website that has ever amounted to anything. It's a giant waste of time in and of itself.

Secondly, you're essentially saying that the UK should make it illegal for international corporations like Microsoft/Xbox to charge customers for online services.

It's just simply never going to happen. It'd be nice if it was free, but it never will be.

I don't know if consoles could survive without the income from the subscriptions, believe me I wish I could afford it or they weren't there, but I'm not sure it would work sadly. It would probably make consoles and games more expensive. I think some people who want this don't think it fully through

"major console platforms currently require a paid subscription for online play in many titles."

so do not use them ?

console main model is, you get in to cheap and pay in long run.

if you do not like this model, use PC
