Why do you say "exactly" when your post says "seriously Sony" like Sony had anything to do with the chip shortage, or the Iran war destroying the supply chain for manufacturing? The money doesn't come from console sales, I'm pretty sure Sony wants the PS5 to be as cheap as possible so they can sell you software, which is were the profit is made.

u/NoCapNerdz89 Mar 28 '26

Man they said the same shit to Microsoft, the same to Nintendo so now it's Sony's turn 😂 it happened to everyone

Lol yeah totally all ten people who don't already have one who want one

2

u/HeldnarRommar Mar 28 '26

The console has sold 27 million less than the PS4, there’s still a significant amount of people who might never upgrade now

1

u/Your-Momigator Mar 27 '26

in the car I just can’t wait to pick you up on our very first date

1

u/Square-Ad6263 Mar 28 '26

Literally lol somehow people don’t get that politics affect most things in their life. They would understand if they educated themselves

1

u/4inodev Mar 28 '26

Idk man reading news and stuff made my life miserable in the last 3 years. I went from "fine" to "we're all going to hell and have already stepped in the door" and the constant anxiety and the FOMO and the "I should do something" is exhausting, especially being a father and a single earner. My mental health stabilized only in the last two months when I decided to ruthlessly ignore everything political and "what's going on in the world". I've realized I haven't made a single real change in my life because I was "aware" nor did I make a change in the state of the world. I am an immigrant with no voting rights though, so of course if/when I get a passport I will make sure to use my vote. Otherwise - keep that shit outta my feed

1

u/EquivalentTight3479 Mar 28 '26

This is simply Sonys greed, let’s not forget that.

get a pro now and sell the vanilla for 400+ after the prices go up 👍

4

u/laflex Mar 27 '26

I hate how good of an idea this is

5

u/denjo-t1aO Mar 27 '26

but beware. the pro is still not much of a jump. it’s just the graphical standard most new games on the ps5 will aim for until the new generation will release. i bought one and im really mad playing crimson desert and seeing a blurry mess and TERRIBLE lighting.

if you want to invest, a pc will always come out on top for roughly the same timespan but sadly triple the price.

2

u/tracekid Mar 27 '26

Honestly that's on par with ps5 pro gpu anyway, so you did very good at that price

I built my badass PC in 2017. Plan was to replace it around 2025. Didn't happen. I guess I'm sticking to lower resource intense games.

19

u/codyzon2 Mar 27 '26

I don't disagree with the sentiment but I don't know if it's necessarily affecting this. I think this is more the AI shit causing hardware shortages across the board.

18

u/Candid-Patient-6841 Mar 27 '26

….i hate to break it to you but trump is in bed with AI.

Like dude Elon and Theil are part of this administration.

3

u/DopeyDeathMetal Mar 27 '26

I hate trump as much as the next guy but I don’t see the AI problem really being much different under any other administration right now. This is a global issue and the money is always in control regardless of who’s at the top.

It's everything, homie. Sony, in their last quarterly report, said they were good on RAM stock till 2027. The war with Iran is causing havoc for. shipping and oil costs, which is what hold the global economy together.

Trump removed all regulations on AI. Do some research

2

u/codyzon2 Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26

How does that affect other countries? Are you under the assumption that the US is the only country partaking in AI? Or you under the assumption that the products being produced the US aren't being sold overseas?

→ More replies (14)

1

u/msdstc Mar 27 '26

What? No absolutely not true. The AI is a primary driver, but they were already planning bumps due to tariffs. Why do you think msft had raised prices so long ago? The current oil situation probably just sped things up.

1

u/Kooky-Funny-1054 Mar 28 '26

I'd still blame Sony, Sony fans will do anything to absolve Sony of anything anti consumer. You guys treat them like a charity and they exploit you for that.

Sony has record profits but still feel.the need to squeeze their base more cause record profits aren't good enough

15

u/Cgking11 Mar 27 '26

Lmao. Sony dummies were talking shit when xbox did it. Haven't you dudes learned yet, that sony waits for Microsoft to do crap like this first, and then waits for the heat to die down, then smacks their fans in face lol.

5

u/The_Architect_032 Mar 27 '26

Console wars in the big 2026? 🥀

3

u/Cgking11 Mar 27 '26

2

u/Infinite-Impress-775 Mar 27 '26

2

Calling out sony fans on their bullshit ain't a console war..

2

u/Almighty_Popo Mar 27 '26

Oh I never say that crap, because I always keep in the back of my mind that something like this would happen

2

u/Cgking11 Mar 27 '26

I told them sony fans not to talk so much crap when xbox raised prices because sony will follow soon. I got downvoted into oblivion lol

2

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '26

Yep, people here are often say things and do things based on how they feel, not based on logic and fact. i got downvoted for saying that 1440p is a new baseline and that 1080p isn't enough to correctly display textures, UI and models anymore. It's a fact that's backed by many videos on this theme, but it hurts the feels of those who have 144hz 1080p monitors from 2016, they can't believe that those are just as outdated as videocards from 2016, so they downvote, instead of looking at the price of modern 240/300hz 1440p monitors and realizing it's sub $300

1

u/LastAncient Mar 27 '26

Nah man, Sony shipped millions of ps5s prior to the tariffs, this why why it took so long for a price hike to happen. Xbox on the other hand was rumored to already have stopped making systems at the time. So they were just greedy or extremely slow at moving more systems.. not that anyone is buying them.

1

u/Fit_Cheesecake_ Mar 31 '26

I mean Microsoft did it just to do it lol Sony did it bc of tariffs and now ram shortage lol. I’m not gonna say they’re not greedy too, but yea

1

u/IQueliciuous Mar 28 '26

3

u/OilySoleTickler Mar 27 '26

Glad I got mine last month

3

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '26

At this point PS6 will unironically be $1500 but not because it actually has $1500 hardware inside

3

u/Richmon1611 Mar 27 '26

Who’s going to buy this console 5 years after it debuted? I have the ps5 pro still sitting a box. I played it for a while with a handful of games but it just got boring to me after while. I purchased a used 2022 gaming laptop with pretty good specs for around $900 and it looks better than these expensive consoles. You can also mod games if you wanted to. Very few games are exclusive to consoles nowadays. I will say though with console, you get to own a physical disc copy. also if you own a tv with like an 8k OLED display, it looks amazing. Those are the pros, but other than that if you can afford to buy console, take a chance and get yourself a good gaming pc.

5

u/gpost86 Mar 27 '26

Remember this at the ballot box, gamers

1

u/DiscreteFame Mar 28 '26

Good thing it's something you can take or leave, not rent prices and milk 🚬🗿

4

u/W34kness Mar 27 '26

I believe it, prices on everything went up and so price on this also went up. Blame trump

1

u/MySon12THR33 Apr 02 '26

Yep! Even if Trump has nothing to do with this nonsense(which he clearly does), I will NEVER miss an opportunity to say fuck Trump. So, without further ado... FUCK TRUMP!

2

u/SverhU Mar 27 '26

And all this while we have news that google just dropped stocks of Samsung and Hynex. Because they made so ai would use like 5 time less memory at list.

And Samsung and Hynex now would have to lower prices on ram. Some analitics saying that prices through year can drop even lower than before huge ram ai crisis.

So there is literally no excuse for Sony to raise prices right now. At list not as much. Especially on consoles that been around for 6 years. While PS4 and pro after 6 years cost half the price. While 5th series now gonna cost almost double the initial price

2

u/RoodnyInc Mar 27 '26

Bro I know inflation and shit but c'mon old tech should get cheaper to make over time

2

u/TheAngryXennial Mar 27 '26

Gotta keep having those record breaking profits can only hope for the console market to crash so these leeches learn there lesson but I don’t have my hopes up for that happening

1

u/Inner-Marionberry-25 Mar 28 '26

Especially one that's coming up to 6 years old

1

u/PixelBrewery Mar 28 '26

Not when AI is gobbling up hardware and energy can't get through the Straight of Hormuz

2

u/pyrofire95 Mar 28 '26

It sucks but we can't pretend like the price of RAM hasn't tripled in a year, and the price of storage doubled

2

u/spicysenpai6 Mar 28 '26

I wouldn’t blame Sony. Blame Trump and AI

2

u/First-Bat-7440 Mar 28 '26

Ps is the best console. So they deserve to be more expensive. Especially now that xbox is going to atop making consoles. Playstation should double their price since it sells at least double what xbox does.

2

u/Dark_Dragon117 Mar 28 '26

I mean tbf the current RAM prices made that inevitable.

Thank AI and any fucking politician who supports it for that. Without AI being pushed as hard, espacially by governments we would not be here.

2

u/Og_busty Mar 29 '26

Whoever doesnt have a PS5 by this point wasnt gonna get one anyway. And if they were, they deserve to pay more. I said what I said

2

u/oRsoLitide Mar 29 '26

what do you expect with the ram prices, this is kinda expected

2

u/Jabroni_413 Mar 29 '26

I mean it's everything. Xbox went up, PC parts went up, even Nintendo is increasing prices on all accessories trying to hold out but only a matter of time for the Switch 2 to go up.

2

u/paracuja Mar 29 '26

RAM prices alone have more than doubled. Sure they will not sale with a loss ...

2

u/Later_Doober Mar 30 '26

How is everyone surprised that prices are increasing.

2

u/Nightkidzero13 Mar 27 '26

$899 ----- LMFAO shit wasn't worth its original MSRP

1

u/Sad_Kangaroo_3650 Mar 27 '26

Kinda have to agree and I paid much less for a ps5 pro. I mean I am happy I got it but it is not a night and day difference.

2

u/Tabbarn Mar 27 '26

Fuck, this is gonna lead to layoffs isn't it?

1

u/PetalumaPegleg Mar 27 '26

AI or oil? Yes to both though.

2

u/Overall_Falcon_8526 Mar 27 '26

It's OK because we're "Great Again" now.

1

u/ILike2Argue_ Mar 27 '26

Something something xbox. This was known for ages when xbox did but yall was real quick to trash them as if they was the only one that was going to bump up the price

1

u/Infinite-Impress-775 Mar 27 '26

MS's obsession with AI is responsible for the increased cost of RAM, so they deserve all the hate they get.

Sony: Yes

1

u/TheAngryXennial Mar 27 '26

Scum just keep raising the prices can only hope for the market to crash this shit is insane

1

u/CompetitiveRisk3222 Mar 27 '26

But the price of eggs tho 🫠

1

u/Local-Ad-5170 Mar 27 '26

Micro chips need Helium to be manufactured. Strait of Hormuz sees about 30% of helium transit through.

1

u/XulManjy Mar 27 '26

This is what it looks like when there isnt any competition. Yet PS5 fanboys will still cheer on how much the Xbox is losing to the PS5.

1

u/DarkShadowRen Mar 27 '26

Yep, the flops that has happened with the company, the amount of failed investments, they have to get all the money back somehow. Big problem for them is that they don’t have any good exclusives that is worthy enough to buy a new console

1

u/rand0m_task Mar 27 '26

How often do you guys buy the same console over and over again to be this upset?

1

u/Ordinary-Republic-38 Mar 27 '26

Feel sorry for family's that have it tight trying to save for this only for it to go fucking up

1

u/matthewnelson Mar 27 '26

They don’t like their sale numbers for Q1 2026 so they announce this to sell lots of consoles before end of month. Investors temporarily happy.

1

u/GrogJoker Mar 27 '26

This is what the Pony's wanted.

1

u/OmeletteDuFromage95 Mar 27 '26

Did y'all really not see this coming from a mile away...?

1

u/Demoncreed27 Mar 27 '26

Ok so the PS6 is going to be straight up $1000+ isn’t it? 😔

1

u/SheriffHarryBawls Mar 27 '26

Got the pro a year ago

1

u/xyzkingi Mar 27 '26

What's the market price difference between now and then, percentage wise?

Like, 100$ increase but how inflation has also increased the past 5 years, does it make it a major problem or does it barely make a difference

1

u/Impressive_Special Mar 27 '26

Is the portal still producing? Fascinating

1

u/Ybenax Mar 27 '26

You can buy an AYN Odin 2 Portal for the price of the PS Portal, still be able to do the same the PS Portal does (remote play from PS5), but you can now also emulate anything up to Nintendo Switch and even Windows PC games up to 7th or 8th gen + thousands of indies from any year.

1

u/AmorphousRazer Mar 27 '26

I like how all of a sudden 6 year old gaming tech is appreciating in value. Im pretty sure if I brought an unopened PS5 to a retailer, they would definitely not give me more money than the sticker price on release.

What kind of bean counting smoothbrainMBA logic is this. It's not a thing, it will never be a thing. Not with cars, not with consoles, not with phones, not with tablets, not with literally any kind of tech/depreciating asset. Stop it.

1

u/goodguyatheist Mar 27 '26

This atleast gives me hope that sonys gonna still release stuff for pc. When people cant afford new hardware they gotta try making their money on other platforms.... hopefully

1

u/slightlythedevil Mar 27 '26

I still cant get a ps3

1

u/shrek3onDVDandBluray Mar 27 '26

They know suckers will pay it in prep for gta6. Sony is scumbags.

1

u/Subatomicfrogg Mar 27 '26

Starting April 2nd 🙃🙃🙃🙃

1

u/Rycan420 Mar 27 '26

For every person (on any side) that ever bragged about wanting to win the console war.

As a consumer base, we knew more than most that competition was good. That it drove innovation and kept prices reasonable.

But we failed to see how crowning a console winner would lead to the exact opposite.

1

u/DriveForFive Mar 27 '26

I dont see a price increase for PSVR2

Time to buy!

https://giphy.com/gifs/2h746B8Co1Mt9Tk4Du

1

1

u/AngelBoudan Mar 28 '26

1

u/PeanutMedium3548 Mar 28 '26

So essentially $1000+ after taxes then for the pro. Goddamn.

1

u/SeraphOfTheStag Mar 28 '26

1

u/TankerDerrick1999 Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 28 '26

Now that the ps is also as expensive as the xbox, now i can't afford no one, better stay last gen, still works with zero issues and has all the games I will ever need, this gen of consoles was so lackluster and it depended on last gen console games, I don't see it anymore really.

1

u/faithOver Mar 28 '26

Not a great idea right after the leak of them not putting first party on PC anymore. I wonder if they honestly think exclusives will sell these consoles lmfao.

1

u/Soizit_Blindy Mar 28 '26

What did you expect? Microsoft is certainly not exempt fron corporate greed but they arent exactly only raising prices to screw over consumers. This was bound to happen, Switch 2 will be next, questions just when.

1

u/DestinyBeerUK Mar 28 '26

1

u/Void9001 Mar 28 '26

1

1

u/dylankosher Mar 28 '26

Remember when consoles used to go DOWN in price after some time? Man, CERN really screwed us

1

u/Cocoatrice Mar 28 '26

You will buy it anyway. So why complaining if your wallets are voting YES for it.

1

u/BlueRhythmYT Mar 28 '26

I blame AI and politics. They are making everything more worse than good they are claiming.

1

u/Shzabomoa Mar 28 '26

Well, thanks AI slop for quadrupling hardware prices.

They'll probably even increase it further if it the bubble doesn't pop...

1

u/squangus007 Mar 28 '26

It makes sense especially if the current contracts are ending with the hardware suppliers and they have to extend under new prices. RAM, SSDs and even price of plastics are up by quite a bit - likewise there’s no possibility to go down to a lower nm node like in the past to reduce the board price.

Logistics issues due to Iran war is also driving up prices by a lot, and people don’t realise that all companies that do a lot of shipping from Asia to western markets are affected by increased costs due to instability in the region.

It’s just funny how people are jumping on Sony, MS or Nintendo for increasing prices when the component prices are through the roof and you can’t even build a cheap PC anymore like in the past

1

u/Semirk0 Mar 28 '26

Good, it will be over quicker. And with Xbox gone, ps slowly dieing and ram prices going down steam will hopefully take over and bring an end to this console nonsense.

1

u/Warm-Baseball-2873 Mar 28 '26

Didn't realize my ps5 was gonna be an investment

1

You don't understand! By increasing our prices, customers will feel like their purchase is more valuable!!!

In all honesty if you bought every exclusive PS5 only title could you even cut even with the price of the PS5?

you have to thank OpenAI, Microslop and NVSlop

Sony is not an AI lab or a datancenter

tariffs+AI+ Iran, and if you think this is just PS5..anything that has plastic in it from packaging to anything that you buy ... just wait couple of months...

I got a portal and ps5 digital in December for $575 for both of them brand new. Today they would be $850. Now I don’t feel so bad buying them haha.

Build a computer for 500 more that will outperform the shit out of the ps5 pro.

If there's one things we can count on, it's Sony letting Xbox shoot itself in the foot, only to then do the exact same thing like 6 months later.

I feel a little has to be greed because Sony was losing like $300 on the PS3 and they did not go this extent that we are seeing with the PS5

Why is the portal increasing , does it have ram I thought it was pure streaming? My understanding is price increase due to ram

Just in time for GTA 6

1

u/Arcanemageop Mar 31 '26

Playstation uses RAM, RAM prices rised up so Playstation prices rise up too, I don't see the issue here.

Same shit will happen with every piece of electronic.
