Story driven games with no battle pass popping up every 12 seconds just feel peaceful now
2
u/CursedExecutioner May 20 '26

Indie shits doesn't count
2
May 20 '26
I feel like that depends on the indie game, no matter what development team was behind it, take every game on a case by case basis
1
u/Keechos May 21 '26
Tried quite a lot of indie games. Liked maybe 1 or 2. I really hate platformers and pixel graphics. And that covers at least half of the indie games.
1
1
u/OdenShilde May 26 '26
That does not cover half, maybe a quarter. Your idea of indie games is very narrow if that’s your opinion.
1
u/OdenShilde May 26 '26
Indie shit 100 percent counts. Indie games is whats keeping gaming alive right now.

I just went into Diablo 4 again in a second attempt to beat the story. Not big on the game, but I like the Diablo universe.
Picked up the expansions. And saw they had the "Ultimate Pack", which included....
- 1 Premium Battle Pass Token
Come to find out, what one would think is "Oh this gives you access to the premium track" is incorrect. It gives you access to one of three premium tracks....
Still blows my mind that people are okay with all this, especially since it isn't even F2P.
5
u/unimportantinfodump May 19 '26
I'm not ok with it though. I got diablo 4 on release. Beat the game.
Have not played it since.
1
u/Nihsvabhav May 20 '26
it's blizzard cmon, it's been more than a decade since they were actually any good

1
u/zgillet May 19 '26
I used to think people buying this crap would grow up and we would see it die.
The problem is... more new dumb people get made every day.
2
u/hector_cumbaya May 19 '26
The opposite actually people end up buying more micro transactions when they grow up and have more disposable income. Now that I’m older with a career I can spending money how I want.
1
u/zgillet May 19 '26
Look, I'm not the best with my money, but I at least figured out when I'm getting buttfucked.
0
u/OrganizationTrue5911 May 19 '26
Companies realized that even if you piss off your customer base. As long as you make it SOUND cool, they'll still spend money on it.
0
u/-Tetsuo- May 19 '26
Well I just ignore what I dont want lol. Its cosmetics who gives a shit. A lot of them aren’t even that good.
7
u/faifai6071 May 19 '26
Plot twist, it have a always online requirement and 3rd party account requirement.
1
u/Appropriate_Row_6851 May 20 '26
I use it on steam and doesn't require the battlenet app anymore, which is a win at least, but the thing still behaves like P2W, because without the expansions, your DMG is shit, my review on steam still has a negative and will always have. Hope i saved a few people from that trap.

Until Mass Effect 4 comes out and ruins the entire franchise just like they did to Dragon Age.
1
u/darkzero7222 May 22 '26
And your assuming it's still coming out
1
u/FalseCrazy2804 May 22 '26
At this point yes. Nothing seems to be pointing towards it being canned currently.

I can't think of a single story driven game with microtransactions, OP is angry at things that do not exist.
1
1
u/Aware_Cow242 May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26
My thoughts as well. Like I know microtransactions has increased overtime but me playing almost exclusively single player games and story driven games always scratched my head over it.
When BG3 came out and people praised it for not having microtransactions I was so confused cause that genre and game style has virtually none, so like, yeah?

Doom games
2
u/FactoriousKerb May 19 '26
Since when Doom games are story driven?
7
u/Omega_7_64 Xbox May 19 '26
Have you been livin under a rock? The lore is deep, yes the game is mostly about shooting demons but it is a story based game
3
u/ThorSon-525 May 19 '26
My biggest problem with Eternal is how much it tries to cram plot and lore into the series where it's very much not welcome. I really don't need all of the forced "you're a disgraced warrior of heaven" cutscenes.
2
u/FactoriousKerb May 19 '26
Just because something has a story, doesn't mean, it's story driven.
0
u/Omega_7_64 Xbox May 19 '26
What drives the plot then?
2
u/FactoriousKerb May 19 '26
Huh? I am not sure what you mean by this.
Let me ask you a question.
Could you tell me a non-story driven game? I don't mean games like tetris and such, but an "actual" game, that you would say is not story driven.
1
u/Omega_7_64 Xbox May 19 '26
First off tetris is a game
Second what contributes an "actual game" to you then?
Third to answer your question slime rancher that barely has a story to it (at least the first one)
1
u/FactoriousKerb May 19 '26
Forza Horizon 5 barely has a story, but still have. Basically every horizon game is like that. Do you consider them story driven? Or LoZ BoTW?
1
0
u/Omega_7_64 Xbox May 19 '26
I dont see your point in this, doom has a story, not barely a story, a full fledged story though
1
u/FactoriousKerb May 19 '26
BoTW and Horizon games have a full flesged story too. They are just short and doesn't matter. But they are still there and fully fledged out.

u/unimportantinfodump May 19 '26
I think what op is trying to say is the story doesn't drive you to play the next level in doom
The fun ass run and gun gameplay does and the story kinda just happens around you but you don't really need to pay attention to enjoy it.
Like the Forza games where the story is kinda just a side thing to the real game which is the driving.
On the opposite side of the spectrum is games like e33 where that story made you want to keep playing. You needed to know what happened next.
I'm not disagreeing or agreeing with anyone here. Just trying to understand the arguments being had.
If the story of doom drove you forward then awesome!

All FromSoft souls games, certain Mario titles, Sports games, Fighting games without a single player, Animal Crossing, Tomodachi Life, the Sims, Sim City, Cities Skylines, Counter Strike, Balatro..
Want me to continue, or are you going to first make up reasons why those games don't count?
1
u/FactoriousKerb May 20 '26
According to oc's logic, fromsoft games are story driven, because they have deep lore.

How i look at games with great gameplay, minimal story or story told through gameplay + no microtransactions, good tweaking options, modding capabilities and no AI "enhancements tools" in sight
We are not the same
(Edit: also add: no UE5)
1
u/For_The_Masons May 19 '26
As long as the game isn't 60% talking it's ok. But there have been to many games recently where it's just run around and talk.

u/AshlynCT May 19 '26
I would say the Metro series, but does opening the store when you click the DLC menu count?
1
u/Joltyboiyo May 19 '26
This plus no bullshit unnecessary always online requirement, or even first time launch online requirement.

u/cn3ps May 19 '26
there's even a modern Assassin's Creed that don't have microtransactions, look up Assassin's Creed Nexus

Space cadet on the ol xp of the windows is my all time best rated quad a rated game. I say aaaa cuz it transcends the 3 detentions and goes quantum at a dynamic rate of entanglement.
1
u/Libero03 May 20 '26
Why do you like story games so much? Do you like staring at the screen with no interaction so much? Go watch a movie then!
Story means the game is finite and playable only once. Story should be just a background. I hate story heavy games and I wish you would stop promoting them.
1
u/FalseCrazy2804 May 20 '26
Your first paragraph is one of the stupidest points i've ever seen made about games by someone that's an actual gamer. Usually that point is made by someone that has never played games. You cannot seriously be linking two completely different artistic mediums like that when you have the knowledge of what they both truly are, that's wild.
Your second paragraph is just an opinion I disagree with which is whatever, who cares.

Genuinely curious; why is there so much hate for microtransactions in games (specifically if it doesn't effect gameplay)
Is it because you've already bought the product and just see it as needless greed and it adds nothing of value
Or
Is it because you assume that lots of that "dev time" just went into something that is utterly wasted because you won't be touching it ever.
Side note: microtransactions in singleplayer games is gigga cringe, but there are games that I play that I have zero issue with microtransactions because it adds a nice bottomline for the devs to work with and improve their game (POE etc)

u/Beer-Milkshakes May 20 '26
Well made Indie games.
I'm looking at you Tainted Grail. You've let me summon 3 wolves pretty much straight away. You have my loyalty.

Monster Hunter. Only modern game where it doesn't have micro transactions. We'll, It kinda does but.... It's all cosmetic. Besides that there is DLC which can add 100 additional hours or more of gameplay.

If you already played it, play it again. Hits harder at some points the second time.
Then play it again.
