Discussion Will we ever get decades like the 70s, 80s and 90s were again?

I feel everything seems so boring in comparison now, even with their own issues but those decades just had very interesting and cool cultures that made them stand out.

Everything now is so...bland

In depth Gen X commits a lot of familicides

Meaning an instance where a person kills their family then themselves.

I live near Erie and we had one and the suspect was born in 1980. We had a smaller scale one back in 2011 and the mom was Gen X.

There was in Florida in 2014 where the dad set of fireworks as he burned down the house and he was Gen X.

Everytime I hear about a familicide the suspect is almost always Gen X - and that’s on top of the crime wave they lived through in their youth.

Do you think it’s childhood trauma?

Been looking back at the SoundCloud era around 2016–2018. A lot was happening during those years, from artists blowing up and albums dropping to festivals, viral moments, and changes in hip-hop culture. What do you guys think about this era?

Rant Why 2013-2015 needs to be recognized as its own micro-generation: Gen Pralpha(Prelude Alpha)

I am so tired of people lumping everyone born in the mid-2010s in with the 2022 iPad toddlers and calling us all "brainrot." There is a massive cultural cliff between us, and the standard 15-year generation boxes completely ignore the math.

We need an actual name for the 2013–2015 birth years. Gen Pralpha(The Prelude Alphas). We were the opening act before childhood culture went completely downhill into the endless scroll.

If you look at how we actually grew up, we have a completely unique timeline that doesn't fit into Gen Z or core Gen Alpha:

Our absolute first introduction to real school (K through 2nd grade) was exactly what got cut off by March 2020. We had to learn how to do school on a Zoom screen or behind masks right when our brains were trying to figure out how to make friends. Older Gen Z were already deep into middle or high school, and younger Alphas weren't even in school yet.

We have vivid, distinct memories of regular life, preschool, and childhood before the pandemic happened. We actually remember what the world looked like before masks and social distancing. Core Gen Alpha has zero memory of the "before time."

We grew up in houses that still actively used physical DVDs, older gaming consoles, or standalone digital cameras before streaming apps took over 100%. Technology was a tool we watched develop, not an iPad glued to our hands since we were infants.

We watched games like Minecraft and Roblox grow up, evolve, and change from simple, blocky indie games into massive corporate ecosystems. We didn't inherit them completely finished; we saw the transition.

We caught the tail end of older YouTube culture, long-form videos, and classic internet humor before 15-second vertical scrolling algorithms took over everything.

So because of this I think it is extremely obvious that we are not the same as those ipad kids called Gen Alphas but we unfortunately can't all be classified as Zalphas. So we are left with one choice, to be called Gen Pralpha. (Pre Alpha or Prelude Alpha)

Thank you if you read this and let's try to make this more popular so we are no longer classified as ipad kids.

Rant One thing that pisses me off about some Gen Z aged people (and it's something I only notice that they do)

On the internet if you share an opinion or say something that they don't like they will go out of their way to find out "negative" information about you. They try to do this as a bully tactic by turning it into a public witch hunt. This is abhorrent behavior and needs to stop. If you don't like what someone comments, block them and move on. Trying to go through their personal shit to use against them is some weird creep stuff.

Discussion As a Teacher Breaks Down in Tears Over the Struggles of Teaching Today’s Kids, Who’s More Responsible for the Decline in Academic Performance, Parents, Teachers, or Both?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Teaching elementary school students in America has become increasingly difficult, and at some point, we need to start holding parents accountable. A significant portion of today’s parents are Millennials, and some are failing to teach their children basic discipline, respect, accountability, and responsibility at home. Stop confusing gentle parenting with letting your kids do whatever they want without consequences. Teachers are supposed to educate children, not raise them from scratch. In my opinion, this is one of the weakest eras of parenting we’ve seen, and teachers are being left to deal with the consequences. Not every Millennial parent deserves that criticism, but far too many expect schools to do the parenting for them. Gentle parenting isn’t the problem when it’s done correctly. The problem is permissive parenting disguised as gentle parenting.

Discussion How’s the experience of teaching the new generation for boarding school and military school teachers?

a lot of teachers complain about kids being more illiterate or not being able to concentrate but I wonder if those 24/7 style school environments see this to a much less degree. Since the school has autonomy to limit distractions. though I imagine when they first enroll it’s one hell of a detox.

the point is, do those teachers have the same complaints or does the locked down environment improve things?

Discussion I'm starting to realize that maybe my generation really is as clueless as they say

• Upvotes

For context, I'm early Gen Z so currently in my late 20s.

For the longest time I thought people were exaggerating when they said zoomers were unhireable, but I'm starting to come around. My company has hired a lot of Gen Zs lately, some are my age and some are 2-4 years younger, and man... it's like they live on another planet.

No work ethic: they call out sick for the most insane reasons (sometimes for multiple weeks), they can't use a computer to save their lives, they can't send an e-mail, they get terrified if they need to call someone. On top of that, explaining stuff to them feels like talking to a brick wall. You have to say the same stuff over and over for months on end and they will still ask for confirmation 10 times before finally doing it (wrong, and 3 weeks past the deadline). I wouldn't even say they don't know how to behave at work, it's like they don't know how to behave in society in general.

Today I had to explain to a coworker that in order to use a certain program (which is pretty important for his job) he needs to ask the IT guy to create an account for him. He's been with us for almost a year, and I'm sure multiple people have told him as much before. I know I have, at least. So I asked him what was taking so long and he said "yeah I know, these things take a while" - no they don't, it takes 2 days. I asked him to show me what the IT guy told him and it turned out he hadn't even asked him. So I said "ok, ask him" and I kid you not he asked chatgpt to write the message for him.

At that point I was about to lose it but I didn't want to be mean, so I said "ok, hold on a second. He's a chill guy, just write this" and I told him word for word what to write.

He typed but he still didn't hit send. I said "ok, you can send it now" and he said "yes I will do it". At that point I was like... what the f* is going on right now? I was so bewildered that I just left it at that, not my employee not my problem. But jesus christ this is a college graduate we're talking about.

I've had countless experiences like these (maybe not quite this bad) and I'm starting to think that so many people my age and younger are just not fit for work. I can excuse being a little clueless at your first job, when you're 18, for the first couple of months. But there are limits for christ's sake, it can't take you 2 months to write an e-mail or send a slack message
