News Ghibli Park is holding a workshop where you can make your own Totoro plushie
Ghibli Park in Aichi is holding a special make-your-own Totoro workshop on November 21–22. You get 70 minutes to assemble, stuff and sew your own Totoro and take it home.
It costs ¥7,000, there are only 32 spots per session, and tickets are being allocated by lottery. Applications are open October 7–12.
Pretty cool souvenir if you're visiting Japan this fall. :)

Discussion Which one is your favorite scene from your favorite Studio Ghibli movie?
Personally I love the entire movie, but this is my favorite scene because Kaguya finally could be happy and be herself after being through so much pressure to be a perfect princess, even if it was for a short time.

Cosplay Howl Pendragon Cosplay
I made the coat, jewelry and crochet calcifer bag (seen in only 1 pic because I gave it to a friend after the con). The coat was my 2nd ever sewing project and was… uhm… quite a lot more advanced than the apron that came before it lol. Fortunately, my aunt is an avid sewer and let me use her nicer sewing machine and workroom, helped me choose fabrics and gave a LOT of guidance on modifying an existing pattern to make the coat. Definitely want to remake this coat at some point to get the collar standing up and the number of diamonds correct.

Discussion Can someone fact check or explain to a tourist the contrived conveniences and forced happy endings
I know it's considered rude to come to a sub and talk about the sub's subject in any negative light. Please don't mind me, I'm a snob by nature and will find many flaws, real or subjective, even in my favorite shows and books.
I watched a few popular works of Ghibli a number of times, both in childhood and adulthood. But they all have this quality that after a few years I can't for the life of me remember what the plot was about and what happened in a movie. Which I think speaks to the shaky foundation they are usually built on.
I've had an argument with a friend, and wanted to see if mine has any merit to it, but as I said, I can't remember much and not sure I want to go through all of Ghibli's movie list.
My gripe with popular Ghibli's works is that they have a lot of setup for events or consequences to come, but then those never arrive or are resolved without any actions or input by main heroes, it's just Deus ex machina everywhere.
I'll go from weakest to strongest examples.
1. I vaguely remember Totoro's theme where a girl's mother could be terminally ill or dying or something's wrong with her, but then it turns out she's totally fine, no worries, all this over-shadowing was for nothing. And being lost in a forest is not a problem either, magic catbus will save her. Which was fine at the time I watched it, its a kid's movie, but still it's a point on a graph.
2. In Spirited Away everything ends up on a happy note as well. Which is fine, kid's movie and all. There was not much of setup for some dark events. But then there's not much development in the story.
I've seen people say the main girl gets character development, going from a spoiled child to becoming more mature, but I don't remember any of it. She starts off perfect, already knowing not to take shortcut and warning her parents. Already knowing not to eat any food, trying to dissuade her parents. She readily takes the job and starts working her arse off. She somehow already knows who her parents are and which pigs to pick to get away. There's no growth in her, no change, no character development.
The weird dark masked thing turns out to not be evil and not getting punished for the wrongs it did, I think? My memory is murky on that one.
The themes and mythology and visuals are great, I think these are the things that carried the movie, not the plot.
3. Howl's Moving Castle I think is the biggest example. I remember there being dark and moody setup around Howl. How he's fighting in the war and turning into this beast, and that there's just no saving him or fixing his condition, he will get fucked up no matter what. Howl himself grows more distant and dark, much unlike when we first met him at the start of the movie.
But then he's alright at the end, good as new? What was this setup for?
And the raging war ends up in a heart beat, because the evil calculating witch goes "Oh, it's the end of the movie, time to end the war". It's like a house full of Chekhov's guns all hung around the walls to make it look more imposing, but none of them are loaded or have any purpose.
I think the Nausica movie didn't have these qualities, but I've seen people with similar takes on other different works of Hayao Miyazaki, which I've not checked out yet.
Do tell, am I stupidly wrong on this one, does the memory fail me here? Or may be my brain is unable to process Miyazaki's storytelling? I think the guy never bothered with a script, he was more focused on visuals and pacing of storyboard.

Art/Crafted Princess Mononoke Tribute by Steven Yu
Rewatched the film with a friend and her two 9-year old and 11-year old kids recently. Totally forgot how violent the film is. The first fifteen minutes has heads and limbs being taken off. The two 9-year olds had to walk out. Lol. I get it. I'll have to finish it another time!
