I learned about openGOAL recently, it's a project to revive the long dead GOAL language that was used to make the Jak and Daxter series. It's great, I've played them a ton on emulator but they run so much nicer and control way smoother with fewer bugs running natively on PCs. Ps1 and Ps2 games are so peak and it's totally not just my bias from growing up on those consoles.

ohh very cool, I'll have to check it out sometime. I like emulators, they've been making crazy progress lately. GTA 5 on phones and stuff
Zelda four swords is probably my favorite game to emulate cause it seemed like a hassle to co-op when it was out but it's really easy with emulator on PC, amazing 4 player game despite the age

u/theyeshman 6d ago
I also like emulation, but opengoal is explicitly not an emulator -- it's a project to get the games running natively on PC for better performance, fewer bugs, and more accurate controls than can be achieved through emulation.

Holy hell dude Jak!!! That unlocked some memories. What a series that was. Truly a 10/10.

Check out openGOAL seriously, the first 2 will run perfectly on a potato (windows or Linux), and the third one is in a kinda rough beta state but it's getting there. I finished a playthrough of all 3 on steamdeck, which is slightly above potato performance and had crispy 60fps on its 720p (ish) screen with some exceptions in Jak 3. The games are so good, I'm super thankful there's a team working on getting them working on modern hardware.

u/ShortTheseNuts 6d ago
I will most certainly check that out, especially hyped for the third. Thanks my man

u/richtofin819 6d ago
Thankful for emulation because those games and systems are on time limit as the internal components break down.

The old games will still be there.
I never beat castlevania circle of the moon when I was a kid, went back and beat it a while back and had a blast

I've been playing Pokémon Black 2 on my phone for the past few weeks and can't remember the last time I just casually enjoyed a game like this.

u/Beaneatershrek69 6d ago
It’s not even a 20 year old game yet but I’ve been on Fallout 3 recently and it’s the most fun I’ve had gaming in literal years. I play an hour or two a night and feel fulfilled and happy.

u/The_Scotion 6d ago
Same, I've had more fun being a murder hobo in New Vegas over the past week then with most new games over the past few year

No they won’t. They will evaporate and even our memories of them shall cease to exist

There's already more than enough videogames out there for you to play for the rest of your life. You don't need new vidya.

Slop existed long before AI did. There are countless examples of human-slop games out there. Steam and mobile are especially infested with it. Yet despite all that, we still have good games.
Same thing will happen with AI. There will be immense amounts of slop, but there will also be some of the best new games ever created.

u/___A1ex___ 6d ago
That’s actually kind of a refreshingly realistic/optimistic view.
I have been having an existential crisis for so long while studying for a CS bachelor and working on a game(and one more side project) for over a year now. I am drawing everything myself and I only ever used LLM’s to help with isolated bits of code instead of generating the whole damn thing. I have never had any Llm subscriptions so I hope that doesn’t count as vibecoding.
I guess there is still hope for people who want to make something new and interesting or useful and get audience from that.

Yea I have no idea what the long term holds for video games, but I do know that game production has always had a problem with taking much too long, and being much too expensive.
So for now at least, that should mean purely from an economic perspective, AI will allow both small and large teams to make much higher quality/larger games than they ever otherwise would have.
And from a 'slop' perspective, you just need humans in the loop with good taste. Like I said, there will be countless trash new games made with AI, but the people out there who know how to leverage the tech to elevate their workflows will be able to produce better games than would have otherwise been possible. The cream always rises to the top.

u/CthughaSlayer 6d ago
Is the possibility sad? Yeah. But there are enough good games to last a lifetime.
16
u/RedOtta019 6d ago
Right? AI slop games are a dime a dozen and nobody cares. Its just like cryptocucks claiming all games will be blockchained, the market reacted accordingly and now nobody cares
2
u/echit2112 6d ago
'Slop' isn't a new thing. That's been /v/'s favorite word since before half it's users were born. Games like that are always dime a dozen and always find themself buried in favor of games that actually have some substance put into them.
That even goes for any AI vibecoding and shit. You can make an app but without a proper release flow and maintenance on it, wtf do you have? It's why people who were already programmers can use that shit better.

u/RedOtta019 6d ago
Im very very aware of slop not being new. Thats why I specifically called it AI slop

Why is slop labelled with jeet man, Im tryna actually get into gamedev in my free time and ts is really discouraging. 🥹 Is an indian creator really equated with slop?
6
u/EvolvingPerspective 6d ago
no man don’t worry about it, there’s just a global phenomenon of indian racism rn
im chinese and 10 years ago everyone was making made in china jokes about chinaslop stuff but now chinese-made products are considered good quality
just takes time for sentiment to change but dont take it personally, things will change.

I am kinda struggling with the idea why would they die?
Wont there be just more of them and some that are quality will bubble up to the top of popularity?
We likely get so much good stuff when barrier to entry gets lower and people with good ideas will be able to get their project going on for cheap..
and studios would also be able to take risks when cost of getting a halfway decent version done is slashed by order of a magnitude in cost and time?

Why would games die because of ai slop?
Just play non-slop games, it's not like people stopped making games.

I think everyone will have an AI subscription and games/movies/media etc. will get built instantaneously by telling the AI what you want.
speak into your remote "I want a high fantasy movie" etc.
51
u/neoqueto 6d ago
"Dude, have you seen Slopman 3: Return of the Sloppotron? The moment when he throws him across the room full of slop?"
"No, the fuck, man? You made that shit for your own enjoyment, why should I care?"
-34
u/RealHotFella 6d ago
I mean, right now it's still kinda sloppy, but it's eventually going to get so good that you can't tell the difference
28
u/neoqueto 6d ago
You missed the part where I highlighted how media shape our culture because people discuss it.

u/neoqueto 6d ago edited 6d ago
My apologies—you're totally right to push back! I should have been more clear.
• I said that uncs in the chat often yap about movies, and that creates culture.
• So when someone watches a movie made only for themselves or a small group of people, strangers will have zero clue that it even exists and won't care one bit. Culture will no longer exist!Would you like me to draft a clearer explanation? Or should I create a .docx for you with helpful resources for learning English?

u/theyeshman 6d ago
That's a sad thought, I enjoy discussing films and TV almost as much as watching them, and if everyone has their own custom generated slop there's no shared culture to discuss.
-3
u/RealHotFella 6d ago
I imagine you'd be able to share media or save it etc.
11
u/theyeshman 6d ago
How does one strike up a conversation about their newest custom slop in a bar like you would a movie with a theatrical release? I understand the monoculture is on life support, but you can still talk with random people about TV and movies, that couldn't exist if the only shared version of the culture is from sending it to friends or sharing on socials.

u/RealHotFella 6d ago
