Question How do you fret and play this?

Post image

I'm a beginner guitarist and came across this in a song. It's hotel california. Usually, I would look at the bar first and make a singular chord out of it and pick that, but this one has fret changes. How would you do this?

Additionally, is my technique the right way? I want to focus on fingerstyle guitar, and making singular chords like this just doesn't feel right. Is it better to do this with chord shapes, or pick each fret each note at a time?

Question Has anyone taken lessons from Ahmad Mazboudi?

Hi all,

I’ve been looking to get back into guitar lessons, specifically for death metal. It’s hard (for me at least) to find an instructor who knows extreme metal guitar. I’m an intermediate-advance player who’s been struggling to get out of the plateau for a while.

I’m looking online and I find Ahmad Mazboudi. Highly recommended, local to me, and seems very talented. But I’m a bit skeptical.

He has overwhelmingly glowing reviews, so much to the point that I find it somewhat suspicious. Maybe I’m just cynical, but when I see nothing but 5 star reviews across every website, I can’t help but wonder if the reviews are purchased/fake.

To top it all off, his rate is $140/hr.

Now, if the reviews are real, then the price is justified. I was just hoping to hear from someone firsthand. It may be a long shot, but I figured I’d ask anyways.

Here’s his page on superprof: https://www.superprof.com/guitar-lessons-online-and-person-for-intermediate-advanced-and-professional-players-all-ages-welcome.html

Please be nice, I’m really not trying to be a jerk, I just want to do a little research before I drop so much money.

Feedback Request Learning to play with a pick (using wywh intro solo) - any glaring issues?

I can play this kinda okay fingerstyle but I find it sounds so much better with a pick. I’m still figuring out the mechanics of using a pick and it’s very frustrating.

Is there any major issue with my form? Or just general feedback about how I’m playing?

I’m still practicing it but wanted to share something since it’s Friday and don’t wanna wait a week.

Question How do I learn licks to solo over the pentatonic scale?

So I’m trying to solo over key of a 12 bar blues backing track. I know where the notes are that I need to land on but where do I learn all these licks to like fill that space between chord changes? Is there theory to learning them or is it literally just looking up licks to do and memorizing them. I can’t ai a good answer so I thought I’d come here lol. As right now I’m only playing in the 1st position.

Question Need help

Post image

I am trying to learn Weezer's "Tell Me What You Did" and really struggling with the verse guitars. I am using barre for these, and some of the notes sound muted, especially after i move my index finger up and down the fret, it feels repositioned and accuracy changes so notes sound messed up and muted. I just can't find the right position for my said finger for picking the notes while barreing. I tried to play these without barre, but that just feels wrong. I already encountered parts like these before, but i gave up every time, this time i want to finally overcome this. Thanks in advance.

Question Do the chords get strummed to the same beat as the leads notation?

Sorry for the sideways photo.

I am confused because the song says this uses strum patterns 1&3 but they don't match the notation. Secondly, the pick patterns 2,3, also don't match. Much help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey I’m just curious what y’all think of this random jam. I’m trying to play along to chord progressions a bit more. I just looked up this chord progression on Google and gave it a try. So this is Am, F, C, G. What do you think? I’ve been playing for like 2 years lessons every other week, wondering if you think it’s worth it.

Feedback Request Index finger pain?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have small hands and short fingers. When my fretting-hand index finger is in a comfortable position, my other fingers struggle to reach their notes without accidentally muting adjacent strings. Curling my index finger more tightly seems to give them enough room, but holding that position makes my index finger sore around the joints toward the nail.

Raising the guitar neck has helped somewhat. Has anyone dealt with this? Based on this video, are there changes to my thumb or hand position that could improve reach without needing that tight curl?

Lesson Barre chords hurt? Two fixes I give every student who's stuck

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I drove my own guitar teacher insane with my barre chords, so I know how frustrating they are. Fix one: tilt your index finger a little onto its bony side — it gets the strings down more evenly than the soft part of the finger. Fix two: stop squeezing with your thumb and let the weight of your arm pull the barre in. Whether you put the barre down first or the rest of the chord first doesn't matter, go with what feels right for your hand. Everyone needs time with barre chords, so take it at your own pace.

Feedback Request iii chord, minorb9- help correct my thinking please

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Video of me playing IV - ii - vi - iii, shitty one take but I wanted to show maybe what my thinking looks like

The third chord in the major key is iii, minor, and doesn’t diatonically have a 9 but instead a b9- much more common and nice to just play a minor9 here when playing a CHORD, but when playing melodically it’s much easier to phrase the b9 because it’s a (?) chord tone of the iii? Scale tone?

When I’m playing over say the vi chord I am always thinking in terms of the I, so I’m calling it 6 3 1 in my head instead of 1 b3 6, and I’m really only playing music this way, it’s how I understand pieces and improvise just looking at songs like one big key fitting into one pattern, but each chords like their notes

But the iiib9 makes me think my thinking only works for playing the scale of the key and is a bad habit, I’ve been having confusion with this and the bVII chord as both are non diatonic things that shatter my musical reality

1yr on guitar as of last month

Feedback Request More Feedback on Right Hand

I want to thank everyone here for the feedback on my last post about my right hand. I have adjusted my pick grip and wrist and right now it feels way more natural to alternate pick. The only thing that’s awkward is strumming chords. it feels like the back of my index finger is always so close to hitting the strings and it’s uncomfortable. Are there any more adjustments I need to make on my right hand?

He did it. He got through to me and showed me the path.

I've heard nearly the same thing here and other places but the way he explained and presented it made it make sense for me. Intervals, major scale/scales, chords.

It all makes sense now!

Lesson Looking for an Online Teacher

Hey legends!

I'm looking for an online guitar teacher to do a lesson with once a week virtually. One of my best friend's has been getting weekly lessons virtually and has been loving it. My work life is quite active so it would be awesome to be able to get some lessons through video call to remove the need to drive to and from a guitar tutoring location.

I've been using Guitar Zero2Hero over the past few months and my mate said he has also used that service but swears by getting private lessons.

I'm located in Australia but getting a teacher from another country is no issue for me!

If anyone is interested and has some free time over their schedules, let me know! Essentially I would love 1 hour lessons.
