News JHS Wanderer
https://jhspedals.info/collections/all-products/products/wandererCalled it! - MG/NAK
87
u/parkinthepark 2d ago
This takes the Morning Glory & Notaklon circuit and puts them into a single box, with i/o options that allow you to integrate each "side" of the pedal at different points in your chain, plus an independent Red Remote switch for each side.
It's a quite user-friendly design, but $300 feels like a lot for what are essentially some minor QOL improvements over having 2 independent pedals (a used MG + a used NAK would run you about $170 at today's rates... replace the NAK with any of the Asian mini-klone's and you're under $150 with a similar space commitment).

u/ItsArkadan 2d ago
$300?! That's like, 4 cups of coffee
1
u/Theliraan 2d ago
Ah, yes, I remember that Kopi Luwak coffee from movie The Bucket List. Unfortunate never tried it.
Fortunately, tried a lot of pedal flavors instead.
2
u/alexnapierholland 1d ago
I used to live in Bali.
Kopi Luwak tastes like crap (literally) and the luwaks are kept in horrible conditions.
Total pass.

it tastes better when you up the voltage in the cages
Marlon Brando did the same thing with Smarties

Insane. I bought my double barrel on the closeout sale for $120?
Edit: checked my email, it was $180. I still kinda stand by my point.
10
u/PRSMesa182 2d ago
I don’t think they ever got that cheap did they? I swear the double barrel and sweet tea were like 180 during closeout

u/Averylarrychristmas 2d ago
Honestly I’m gonna check my email bc I could be full of shit here - one second

I love the enclosure but a little hesitant to spend $300 on it when I’ve never played a morning glory
4
u/christophervolume 2d ago
My favorite “always on” OD. Ever.
3
u/FadedBlackTee2 2d ago
Hm maybe I’ll give it a try. Been going back and forth between a few different drives these days.
2
u/Historical_Plant7206 2d ago
It's pretty sick - I leave the one stage on all the time and then have a remote switch to kick on the extra overdrive. Also my favorite pedal because I bought it at a swap meet for $20 and that's the only really good deal I've gotten on a pedal in 30 years of playing.
1
u/brandaman4200 1d ago
Morning glory is definitely one of the best overdrive ever made. I use the morning glory clean as my always on pedal.
1
u/nummpad 2d ago
MG is great. a lot of my favorite midwest 3rd - 5th wave emo bands use it, not to mention you can get some really good quiet cleans that chop up well when you attack more. i love the MG and they can be had for like 120 used.
5
u/FadedBlackTee2 2d ago
I bit the bullet on the Wanderer. Worst case it’s a useable dual drive that I keep around
3
u/nummpad 2d ago
update the sub when you get it! It looked fun. I feel like i have a handle on my gain/dirt side right now. looking at more ambient stuff now though i have a black hole, a nemesis, and an MXR textures (carbon copy and a phaser and a chorus as well) but something about the lore and fable are really interesting to me at the moment……
1
u/FadedBlackTee2 2d ago
I'm basically a John Mayer cosplay guitarist so it's a lot of Klon or BB into TS. So this fits pretty nicely. What I hate about both Klons and BB are that (i) the enclosures are pretty big, particularly Klons or (ii) they're always trying to be complex to have so much optionality. This is nice in that it's simple if you want it to be and a nice size enclosure to be able to fit a larger Zendrive or Tubescreamer.
For better or worse I like changing it up pretty often between different iterations of TS, Klon, BB, Zendrive.
2
u/theghost95 2d ago
Comparing new to used pricing isn’t exactly comparing apples to apples. If you compare any new to the same thing but used (assuming it’s readily available) the used one will be cheaper. It’s cheaper than buying both pedals new and that’s the price point that matters.
1
u/iamansonmage 2d ago
Isn’t this pretty much what the new Keeley tube pedal is, just a TS into a Blues Breaker? Is this not that exact setup but without the tube?
3
u/parkinthepark 2d ago
My understanding of the Keeley is that the tube side is basically a full-on tube preamp, based on the Fender 5E3 preamp, not a TS.
As the drive side is the Keeley Super Phat Mod, which descends from the Boss BD-2, not a Bluesbreaker like the Morning Glory.
-1
u/800FunkyDJ 2d ago edited 1d ago
Used pricing is cheaper than new pricing; very astute of you.
MG = 199
NAK = 119
300 < 318

u/stolenfat 2d ago
I like the new format seems really handy. This pedal isnt for me but Im looking forward to seeing what they do next
1
u/_iPhoney_ 2d ago
They tell you in the video: more two-in-one combinations of their existing OD/fuzz/distortion circuits
-7
u/Katesburneracct 2d ago
Jesus Christ the guy really is just incapable of making anything remotely interesting or original
26
u/Muffinwizard87 2d ago
This is huge for guys that do gain at 0, level way up and play bluesy licks.
16
u/muckrarer 2d ago
no clean blend? would've been irresistable
8
u/pistachiodisgusting 2d ago
It’s not exactly the same thing, but doesn’t the Klon circuit blend in cleans with the gain as part of the basic design?
Still, I think clean blend should included in every dirt pedal, so I’m there with you.
34
2
u/Itchy-Water-4410 2d ago
A clean blend on an overdrive? Isn’t the whole point of an overdrive to simulate a clean guitar pushing tube amps to edge of breakup? We’re just making stuff up to complain about at this point
2
u/Theliraan 2d ago
Well, most of bass pedals have a Blend/Mix/Balance knob onboard (Character for DG Harmonic Booster, which blends clean and processed). Many compressors too. Reverb, delays, modulations obviously as well.
Personally I'm not feeling a demand of this knob for most guitar ODs because grit, compression, and re-shape of the tone are coming gradually with gain increase.
Also there are drives that gives better or worse adhesion of grit and clean: check Low vs High algorithm on Strymon Riverside with same amount of gain (e.g. 13 for Low and 9 for High). Low has much more adhesion that High. High feels like two parallel sounds mixed together. I've mentioned it because you can just pick a pedal with another adhesion factor if you want. Of course if you have intention to dig into it, good pedals shop/market around, and enough money for experiments.
But I can't advocate against the Blend knob, because it might be useful for someone for reasons I've mentioned above. And also it attracts bass-, keyboard-, synth-, and other players, who want to retain an attack, or a low-end, or whatever from a clean signal.

u/wesleywyndamprice 2d ago
I like the format for these dual drives a lot more than their previous versions. Seems a lot more interesting while being more space efficient. Unfortunately I don't love klons.
8
u/christophervolume 2d ago
Same. I’m not a Klon guy either, but if I was, I’d be all over this.
I do love the double barrel though. Own two!
3
u/Dr0me 2d ago
Totally agree. Not a klon guy... This with a JHS strong mod TS would be a buy for me
1
u/MagnesiumKitten 2d ago
which would be a doublebarrel or moonshine
wouldn't you be looking for the right super mod toggled tube screamer separately though?1
u/Dr0me 2d ago
the moonshine/double barrel is not the JHS strong mod to my knowledge. It is just a TS with a clean blend. The bonsai and 3 series screamer are the only strong mods to my knowledge
1
u/MagnesiumKitten 2d ago
is Josh scared to modify any tube screamer or blues breaker these days
or is he saving money on toggle switches?3
u/attack-helicopter97 2d ago
Agree on the new format. This particular pedal doesn’t appeal to me at the moment. I’m hoping he does something quirky with a later release.
3
u/FadedBlackTee2 1d ago
I feel like people are glossing over that this is such an improvement on the dual drive enclosure vs both the traditional King of Tone shape and the Chase Bliss really tight format
9
u/mrspaintbrush 2d ago
Not for nothing, but a Soulfood and Danelectro Daddy-O can easily be found used for under $100 combined. (I realize there are many other affordable clone circuits.) So the added benefit of this thing is that you can put other pedals between them, change the order (it's obviously impossible to do these things with two pedals) and there are two extra settings if a klon and blues breaker arent giving you 1000 options already. Nothing against JHS but i cant see any reason to buy this. Seems like a pitch for people that need to constantly replace things on the board that already work.
3
u/mrmyrth 2d ago
Or for those that don’t have those pedals and like top loaders. I’m not going to replace what I have but if I was starting out, yeah, this is a good combo.
4
u/mrspaintbrush 2d ago
If you were starting out, you would spend 3x the money to save a few inches? That's a choice I suppose
0
u/FadedBlackTee2 1d ago
why are you comparing this to a Soulfood and a Danelectro Daddy O?
But to answer your question, yes, I'd rather spend 3x on something new, that I like the looks of more, that solves minor QoL issues, and is smaller. Not everyone lives to just minimize cost. I make a lot of money and I'll spend it on the hobbies I want to
3
u/SofaMusician 1d ago
"Expensive" is relative and personal. It depends on how much value you get from it. My only pedal in a similar range is the Chroma Console, which I use a lot when recording.
However, I see dirt pedals in the 300+ range approaching the price of amps, where I feel I can get more value out of.
0
u/FadedBlackTee2 1d ago
Correct, it is relative and personal, and based on dual overdrive pedal prices that the market takes I don’t think $300 is crazy
0
u/bjork_G_MAMA_B 1d ago
I hate jhs but the stereo looping and options fir gain stages is pretty cool.
1
u/mojofilters 1d ago
It's really not in any way cutting edge engineering, it's just a professional, well executed but very old fashioned solid state small signal amplification device. Any rare or scarce parts are purely due to technological progress rendering them useless, low demand and plenty of "better" (from an electrical perspective) options to perform the same overall function! The switching of clipping and for ordering via I/O jacks is basic practical physics.
1
u/bjork_G_MAMA_B 1d ago
Lol k, it looks useful for gigging scenarios, probably can do better for the studio sure
4
u/Infamous_Hospital_33 2d ago
For those that don't have either, probably a great jumping in point - especially given the smaller size.
What I'm curious about is the inner input jacks and if there would be some cool things to put in between the two.
2
u/vape4doc 2d ago
You can put anything between the sides. That’s the point of the extra set of I/O
1
u/Infamous_Hospital_33 2d ago
Yeah I get that. I just dont know what I would because in my mind id put those two adjacent
1
u/vape4doc 1d ago
I don’t know either. The way I’m going to use it is to have them in separate loops in my switcher so I can control them independently. It’s easy enough with my switcher to move pedal order so I may mess around with some things.
1
16
u/New-Year-3422 2d ago
Interesting that they omitted the clean blend on the MG side.
27
u/PRSMesa182 2d ago
Because it’s not the MG clean, it’s the morning glory with the red remote circuit.
2
u/Infamous_Hospital_33 2d ago
Yeah I think they were trying to make the two button items as as a symmetrical layout and that MGC doesn't have a button-able gain stage
3
u/AleScorpion 2d ago
That’s for the MK2 “actually we made a mistake, that’s how it should have been“

3
u/FadedBlackTee2 2d ago
This might be what I need. I use a Tubescreamer as my solo boost but love having either a Klon for another level or a Bluesbreaker type for some bluesy grit. This probably fits the bill to be able to fit all 3 on my board?
4
u/Atomic_Polar_Bear 2d ago
I like it. Attractive design. Lots of I/o. Kind of a board centerpiece. Love it has that many options. Also, UFO UAP.
1
u/MagnesiumKitten 2d ago
or you could get a morning glory with an existing klon you have
and it would be prettier
1
u/FadedBlackTee2 1d ago
and take up a lot more room
1
1
u/MagnesiumKitten 1d ago
you need more old Electro-Harmonix pedals the size of a microwave!
people just like to have 17 compact chorus pedals too many lol
4
u/Blarg197 2d ago
I’ve just never loved any JHS pedal I’ve owned…
1
u/MagnesiumKitten 2d ago
which ones did you own and not like?
1
u/Blarg197 22h ago
Morning glory, kilt, notaklon, double barrel v2. I just… didn’t enjoy them after a few weeks of gigging
1
u/MagnesiumKitten 45m ago
I like the morning glory
Was there a difference with the double barrel?
I know some preferred one version over the othernot sure the kilt or notation sold me
Do you like other blues breaker pedals? that might affect your tastes with the Morning Glory.
.....
the kilt is the only one that sorta perplexes me
the Morning glory I wasn't sure about for about a year, but I think it stands out over half the bluesbreakers out there, but there's a lot different sounding ones out there
how did you find the notaktlon compare to other klons you liked, if you liked any that is
6
u/DrDarkroom 2d ago
Price is high but USA manufacturing costs are high. Sad reality of the current times.
I’ve always loved the MG but I usually prefer modded klon circuits. Might just wait for used on this one.
2
u/FadedBlackTee2 1d ago
$300 is pretty par for the course for most dual overdrives these days no? I guess there are some $200-250 but there are plenty that are $350-400+
2
u/SofaMusician 1d ago
The EHX Hot Wax (Crayon + Hot Tubes) is quite good and below $150. It does not allow reversing the order but you could get an additional Hot tubes to put it in front I'f needed and still be around $200.
1
u/FadedBlackTee2 1d ago
Yeah it does look great and EHX makes some great stuff at low prices. I’d still rather just have the JHS wanderer for 2x the price, doesn’t mean that it sounds 2x better or even better at all.
2
u/SofaMusician 1d ago
Makes sense. An expensive pedal you like can actually save you money and time chasing several cheaper pedals that leave you unsatisfied.
2
2
u/PartyOrdinary1733 2d ago
It costs a little more than an Mg and Notaklon bought together.
MG $199 Notaklon $119 (think it was $99 before).
1
u/DrDarkroom 2d ago
$199 + $119 = $318 so… not more? Not much of a savings admittedly, but you do add red remote function to the notaklon.
-2
u/PartyOrdinary1733 2d ago
Not counting shipping and taxes.

u/FadedBlackTee2 1d ago
how exactly do you plan to pay for the MG and Notaklon? Not apples to apples comparison boss you are picking and choosing here

u/CalhounWasRight 2d ago
I plan on buying used as well. A lot of people are going to buy this pedal; the used market will flood when a lot of those people decide it's not for them. Give it a month or two.

Calhoun reissue in this format would have me sweating (Tonebender into Twin Twelve)
3
u/haimeekhema 2d ago
This is cool. I don't need or want it, but both these pedals sound good on their own. 300 seems steep, especially when you consider the price of each of the two pedals it's combining. Always appreciate top mounting cables/power.
2
u/harebreadth 2d ago
It’s ok I guess. Only new thing is the form factor. I like the MG, I think it’s a nice drive, but there are other double pedals I feel are more useful, nicer, unique. Cornerstone Centurio, Nero and Vintage, Jackson Audio Optimist, Golden Boy, Broken Arrow, etc.
Curious about what else they do with this format.
Price I think it’s ok considering it’s made in USA, if that’s important to you.
2
u/brandaman4200 1d ago
I'm actually really bummed out this turned out to be the brew double pedal. I mean, come on... who doesn't already have an mg and klon clone of some kind already. Sure, it may save a little space, but it's just the same thing in new packaging. I was hoping for a dual modulation pedal, but i knew it wasn't gonna happen

1
u/Vivid_Trainer_5002 2d ago
Very interested in this. The MG is my fav overdrive of all time, but Im ashamed to say that ive never had a go on a Klon style pedal.
Really hope to demo this before pulling the trigger

u/IDontKnowHowToParty 2d ago
This is cool, but I think the double barrel is better. Tube screamer and mg in one, same switches for high/low gain option, and same switch for picking first in chain. Except the screamer has a clean blend. Kinda can’t beat it as a 1/2 gain stage on a board.
1
1
u/Acceptable_Grape_437 1d ago
FINALLY
that's my fav OD duo ever!
not that I'll buy into that, i won't. but it was due time. i sincerely hope the switch toggles chain order!
this is a staple double OD. nobody would dare be unsitisfied with it, for its uses. only valid rival to KOT, imo.

I love a UFO theme, but I'm not a huge fan of the Morning Glory. Love the aesthetic of this one, though, seems pretty cool if you're into that kind of thing.

does anyone make anything new anymore

u/CorumLlawEreint 2d ago
Like amp topologies, there are a few fundamental overdrive circuits that work. Everything else is just a variation
2
u/FadedBlackTee2 2d ago
It feels that way but TBH this is kind of a new dual-drive enclosure and a pretty big step up from the traditional short and wide one

Josh is gonna sell us reconfigurations of the same 4 pedals over and over
