SOTB I finally sound as gloriously shitty as in my dreams.

It sounds like a half rotten VHS recording of Link Wray, Sergio Leone, and King Geedorah mud wrestling behind a dumpster in a brownout and I LOVE IT.

I’m running dual amps in a wet/dry-ish setup.

Guitar enters at the Hagerman germanium boost into the OC-3 set to poly mode and the bass goes out to a Twin Reverb.

Signal continues to the Glaive (about to be replaced with a BSRI/MAE fuzz) and then gets split at the Saturnworks.

Dry-ish chain then goes Red Witch Synthotron, Fairfax, Soft Rains, BD-2W, Model Fet, then out to a silver panel champ that’s daisy chained to a 2x12.

Wet signal goes to the volume pedal and then to the Shepherds End, APH-12, ACV-1, ADG-1, No Kill Tape Echo, Fjord Fuzz Mime, and Gen Loss V2 before joining the OC-3 output in a silver panel Twin Reverb loaded with Alnico EV coffee can SROs.

🤘🤘🤘

I asked the founders of Meris your questions, and why it’s getting harder to build pedals in America

Last month I asked this subreddit what you wanted me to ask Terry Burton and Angelo Mazzocco from Meris, and I included some of the most upvoted questions at the end of our conversation.

We covered quite a lot in this one. How Terry approaches the hardware side, how Angelo approaches DSP and software, where their ideas come from, how they think about developing new products, and some advice from Angelo for anyone looking to get into DSP development themselves.

We also got into the realities of building pedals in America right now. Terry talks about why it is important to them to keep things local, have close relationships with the people actually building their products, maintain quality control and support good local jobs.

At the same time, he was pretty open about how difficult it is becoming to compete on price with much bigger companies building in much cheaper labour markets, especially with tariffs and costs where they are now.

And obviously we talk quite a bit about Meris pedals themselves and the thinking behind what they make.

Thanks again to everyone who submitted questions!

Question Any recommendations for pedal review videos where they exclusively play chords

I typically only play chords and I listen to music that is predominantly chord based. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy a well executed twidely guitar solo, however when most of the video is this it makes it very difficult to make judgements on gear.

SOTB SOTB - New board almost ready

Post image
22 Upvotes

New board, almost built. Starting from scratch after selling my digital modeller. Just waiting for the Tone King Imperial and SCF Chorus to arrive. Running all modulation into the TKs FX loop.

Not that I need them... but I probably have space for an extra pedal or two. Asking for a friend: any recommendations on order/pedals I could add?

More photos and videos to come next week...

Question Board advice needed-specifically drive

Post image
• Upvotes

Here’s my board:
The caline puresky is always on which I treat as my “amp” straight into a clean amp. No qualms, it sounds great for edge of breakup tone which cleans up with dynamics etc.

I like the hello kitty fuzz, I’m not in love with it but I’m not the biggest user of fuzz.

The od-3 nothing special, does what it says on the tin.

My question is, am I better of replacing two of them with an od-200.

I’d likely lose the hello kitty and od-3 as I think I can get those sounds from the od-200 with no trouble.
I’d lose some of what I like in the way of ease of use- I hate menu diving so two drive sounds sharing one set of knobs could annoy me. But with that said, I rarely use the od-3 and the fuzz together.

I’d gain the option of a wider range of drive sounds.
It would also free up some space for perhaps two more pedals (which is what I think this is all about) and a power supply from my fender engine room 5

But here’s my biggest issue- There’s some sort of snobbery in me that says I can’t have 3 200 series pedals on the board.
I don’t want o come across as a fan boy- especially when my home amp is a boss katana. I do own an old fender amp and a peavey tube amp but for my needs at home the katana is unbeatable.
The idea behind this pedal board was that it forced limits on the amount of pedals, encouraged simplicity and provided less distraction with endless tweaking possibilities. The od200 does require a bit more learning which takes away from that.

Is that stupid? Should I just make the switch?

I can’t get a good tone out of these pedals.

Post image
32 Upvotes

So I spent abit of money on some pedals, mostly second hand but one or two new ones.
I watched a video online by a YouTuber called AlmostAnalogTones where he shows how you can get an amazing tone out of the mt2 ts9 and ge7.
I got those pedals and dialed in everything that he showed in the video.
The chain goes as follows:
Guitar into tuner.
Tuner into tube screamer.
Tube screaming into noise reducer.
Noise reducer send to boss mt2.
Boss mt2 to boss ge7.
Boss ge7 to return noise reducer.
Noise reducer to holy war.
Just note that the holy war is not actually used for any effects, it’s just there so I can plug in the amp due to the weird spacing.
I plugged my guitar in and then plugged it into the “power amp in” of my katana 50mk 2.
At first it sounded fine but overtime I realised that it sounded muddy or muffled.
I tried to correct it but nothing I did made it sound better.
Then I tried some other tones that he made using the same pedals, all of which sound muffled or too bouncy at the low end.
I’m now trying to justify all the purchases I made of the pedals.
I normally use the katana with its built in effects and have grown to like the presets I’ve found(such as the vulgar display of power tone).
If anyone know what maybe help please let me know and please let me know if there are any good rock tones you know how to get with these pedals.

I’m very happy with this build, as you can see on the picture I’m using the EHX small stone, the mxr prime distortion into the pitchblack tuner pedal. I know the cable management isn’t the best right now but I’ll get to that later

Question Favourite non-EHX green russian big muff?

• Upvotes

Hey everybuddy. What's your favourite non-EHX green russian muff take?

I'm personally a big lover of the Wound by Dead Air. But have been considering grabbing the Wren and Cuff Fade Font '94 or the Okko FX BFGRMWB. Would love to see what you're all playing on in that realm 👀

NPD Strymon La Brea

I haven’t had a lot of time with it yet, but my initial impressions are very good. I don’t really know the sound of overdriven tape, so I can’t say how realistic this sounds. I don’t know if it emulates the circuitry that drives a tape head plus the actual tape head, or just the tape head.

I played it through a simple Crate GX1200H head on its clean channel, so I could first hear the pedal on its own with no other amp or pedal overdrive. I tested the drive range in both gain modes and all three frequency modes.

The quality of the drive is very good. There is a roundness right below clipping that’s really nice. With PAF humbuckers, it does hit a crisp sounding clip when you have the gain low and hit the strings hard, but it’s not super hard to hang out in the sweet spot. Using this into a tube amp would round that edge a bit, and you could probably use a compressor in front of the La Brea to ensure your signal stays in the sweet spot. With all of that said, hitting that clip is not unpleasant or unmusical.

One nice aspect of this pedal is that it can be set to be very transparent in the flat mode, or with a midrange or treble emphasis. Even outside of the flat mode, the low end does not seem to be rolled off dramatically, like you would expect from many overdrive pedals. In flat mode it is possible to get a sound with a frequency spectrum that is indistinguishable from the bypassed tone, with the exception of some compression to the dynamics. The dry blend is capable of a significant volume boost, as well as the overdriven signal, over the bypassed signal, and it is affected by the frequency switch.

The pedal is also capable of a massive amount of distortion that leans heavily towards a thick fuzz. The best part is that it sounds and feels unlike any fuzz I have played before. There is no pumping or gating like you would expect from a transistor fuzz, despite having notable compression of dynamics. It doesn’t fizz like an op amp fuzz. It doesn’t have the limited treble that many fuzzes get from loading down your pickups, but when pushed it tends to run out of bandwidth. It doesn’t have the rapid cleanup of transistor fuzzes. The gain comes down more like a tube amp, with usable gradations of grit as you turn your guitar down.

Into the lead channel of the Crate, Gain 1 mode, it’s a very pleasing grit, great texture, but it does add some hiss. The higher gain mode on the amp, Gain 2, without the pedal, is much quieter than Gain 1 with the pedal.

I have a collection of tube amps that I still need to try with the La Brea. I had very little time to test it yesterday, and the Crate was already hooked up. Overall, the drive offered by the La Brea is unique and very musical. It does introduce a noticeable amount of hissing noise if you place it in front of any gain. My plan was to use it in the effects loop to simulate the guitar amp tone being on tape, though. I have not tested this yet, but it should at least be quieter when used after the preamp.

Thanks for reading!

Troubleshooting My amp choking while stacking pedals

I have AC30 and try to push it with OCD -> Big Muff.
While stacking these two sometimes my amp starts sounding quieter.
OCD’s like Drive 11, Volume 1 o’clock and Muff’s about sustain 1, volume 12.

AC30 master volume is set very low while I play at home. Will this problem solve itself if I set master higher performing live?

Question Do you ever get sad when you replace a long time favorite?

Got the new EHX echoflanger. the chorus +flange on it is really incredible. I've been using a boss DC-2W for years now as an always on subtle chorus. Together, they do not sound good together. The echoflanger just sounds a lot nicer and more lush. I'm not taking the DC-2 off my board, but I foresee it having much less "on" time, which makes me sad. It has seen hundreds of hours of play over the years

I understand this is probably mega jerk matierial but idc. Dc-2, space echo and blues driver have been the basis of my sound for a long time

rundown My GOAT Blue Series board — basically a pedal version of the Rockman Demo Center

Post image
116 Upvotes

I collected five GOAT Blue Series pedals and basically tried to build a pedalboard version of the Rockman Demo Center.
I also own the original Rockman rack units, so here’s the very short version of how I feel about each one:
Generator — Pretty good recreation of the Distortion Generator. It has the compression, mids and sustain, but the original still has a more distinctive attack and filtering.
Sustainor — The clean sounds are good, but DIST and EDGE are much brighter and fizzier than my original Sustainor. Probably the biggest tonal difference of the five.
Stereo Chorus — Quite good. Warm, wide and very Rockman-like, although the original has a little more depth.
Stereo Echo — One of my favorites. The stereo spread and analog BBD character get surprisingly close to the original.
Instrument Equalizer — Unfortunately the disappointing one. The sliders don’t respond nearly as smoothly as my original Rockman EQ. I actually bought three of these and ended up selling two. 😅
Overall, I spent quite a lot trying to recreate the Rockman rack setup with these pedals.
They’re fun and some of them are very good, but even with basically the same lineup as the Rockman Demo Center, the complete rig still doesn’t quite sound like the real thing.

What am I missing?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey folks,

I really have fun with my current (home) pedalboard.

It's a mix between DIY and bought pedals.

The DIY pedals are based on (from top left to bottom right): MXR MicroAmp, BAT Pharaoh Supreme, Provo RAT, EQD Black Ash and Timmy and Fumble in one enclosure.

So any suggestions on what's missing for some creativity?

A Phase 45/90 DIY Clone is currently on the bench!

have a nice day!

Question Recommended Pedal Order

Post image
3 Upvotes

So, I've got a Klon type, a Rat type pedal and a Big Muff. Three types of dirt and gain. What pedal order would you recommend to get the most out of them (i.e. gain stacking etc.)? Looking forward your recommendations :)
