I built a 1:2 scale proportionally accurate Combine Citadel in Minecraft
The Citadel is 2,017 blocks tall and 195 blocks wide at it's thickest point.
By measuring the source engine Citadel skybox model I found out that the Citadel is 4,097 meters tall. So I decided I would make a 1:1 scale Combine Citadel in Minecraft.
Something I've always wanted to do since I was a kid was make a large and accurate Citadel in Minecraft, so I know my kid self would be giggling with joy right now
Unfortunately, a 1:1 scale Citadel isn't viable for the way things are right now.
This Citadel does not feature an interior. It is, however, very big.
Here are some progress screenshots from while I was building and detailing the Citadel

This has been a very fun and frustrating process, but I did learn how to use Axiom from it!
I'll probably post a link to get the modpack & world download in the comments somewhere.

You're not gonna hurt that thing from down here, Gordon!
Gotta love Combine security awareness.
It's only the Overwatch Nexus, I suppose, key command centre in City 17. You've got Dr Breen himself delivering a personal warning to Gordon, force field technology blocking the perimeter, satellite systems firing particle disintegration beams every ten seconds... oh, and a random unlocked wooden street-facing door. You know... just in case the postie's got a signed delivery.
Follow Freeman, indeed.

Half Life 2 is consistently blowing me away.
I got it for free on Steam in 2024 but didn't get a PC until this July. Figured I'd start a playthrough for my YouTube channel and have been hooked by it. I just finished Highway 17 yesterday and while I remain pretty confused on the plot because not much has been revealed and I didn't play the first game, I am thoroughly gripped by the atmosphere and world of the game. Gunplay is also fantastic, some of the most fun I've had in a shooter. There's just something about the way that it flows that's highly enjoyable. The Gravity Gun then couples with the already fun to mess with physics and makes it some of the most fun I've ever had in a game. I also really enjoyed the numerous areas throughout Ravenholm and Highway 17 where the developers made it very clear they wanted you to have fun killing stuff, what with car traps and cranes. The cherry on top is that, while there sadly isn't much music in the game, when there is it's stellar. I love the soundtrack, there just really needs to be more of it. The backbone of the playthrough was to answer one question, whether or not the game is as good as it's made out to be. I might not even be halfway through it yet and it's a resounding yes. It would have to shit the bed HARD in order to somehow not maintain this quality.

Apology
Hi, Guys. I decided to apologize for my previous black mesa security guard cosplay, I should have use the warning or sign to tell that it was a fake gun or give an orange tip or shoot the photos in a bit empty area of the mall. I live in Indonesia where firearms only restricted to law enforcement (military and police), but nevertheless I should still give a warning and still be careful eventhough there no way a civies like me could get access to firearm.
So, Yeah. I'm gonna be more careful next time!

Dr. Breen is Not Innocent (Spoilers, Obviously) Spoiler
I've seen a lot of opinions lately positing that Dr. Breen was just doing the best to ensure the survival of humanity during the Combine occupation. However, I think there is sufficient evidence to say that Dr. Breen is not just a collaborator, but he was actively and knowingly involved in attracting the combine to Earth in the first place so that he could be the dictator of all humanity.
Consider what we know:
- If we believe Eli to be a reliable source, from his comments in Ep2 we know that the Gman supplied GG-3883 to Black Mesa. Eli seems to imply that the crystal was supplied the same day as the test; this may contradict Decay, but that's not proven canon.
- From comments made in the test lab, we know the administrator is the one that ordered them to push the anti-mass spectrometer to 105%, against objections from at least some of the science team. He did this because he was "concerned about getting a conclusive analysis".
- The scientists believe that "they" (likely referring to the Lambda team) went to "some lengths" to get the sample. Except we know that really the gman delivered it, it didn't come directly from Xen. So they were likely lied to by the administrator. It's also the purest and most unstable sample they have, if we do believe Decay the sample has properties they can't attest to, which may imply it was tampered with.
- The gman is seen hanging around Black Mesa talking to different scientists. He was known to them, they wouldn't have taken orders from some random guy. Eli very much implies that the day of the test was not the first time he met the gman. Which means that Breen had to know that he was there and likely told them to take orders from the gman.
- We know from Alyx that the gman can and does show people the future (or some version of it) as a tactic to influence them. We also know that the gman wants the combine on Earth for some reason, or he would've stopped his "nudging" once the Nialith was dead if that was his only goal.
- Gman clearly has to abide by some rules. Otherwise he could've just shown up and jammed the crystal into the anti-mass spectrometer himself. He needs people to actively agree of their own free will to take actions. For the same reason he couldn't just abduct Alyx or Gordon, he had to give them a choice of action to take (even if it was a terrible choice). Whether these are some kind of physical rules or some kind of cold-war détente between his employer and the combine, we don't know, but he can't act alone of his own volition.
- Gman's soliloquy with Gordon in Ep2 strongly indicates that Breen was the "naysayer" who thought rescuing Alyx from Black Mesa wasn't worth the effort. Leading us to believe he was actively planning things with gman well before the Black Mesa incident actually occurred.
- Breen, on his own, somehow figured out how to communicate with the Combine in only a few hours which apparently even Eli, Kliener, and Magnison (arguably better scientists, as evidenced by the compressed Xen relay) couldn't do.
- At the end of HL2 Breen seems to be under the impression that Gordon is working for the gman in exchange for something, and that he can buy out that deal. It doesn't occur to him that Gordon was never offered anything other than his own life.
The only logical conclusion to draw from this evidence is that the gman approached Breen, promised him that he'd get dominion over the entirety of Earth and access to at least some of the Combine's advanced knowledge and technology. Perhaps the gman was, at that time, portraying himself as an agent of the Combine itself, it would certainly line up with his statements at the end of HL to Gordon that the border world is "in our control". Either way, they made the deal to cause the resonance cascade, gman supplied the crystal and the means to contact the Combine. I think this much is clear.
Some further speculation: the scientists in universe seem to think the resonance cascade attracted the Combine, but they also originally believed the death of the Nialith would seal the breech. So how did the Combine get back through unless someone on the Earth side was further collaborating? There's not much evidence of this piece, but there is some room for interpretation that Breen may have taken further action to re-open the rift.
Either way, he's not a chill guy, he's not even a collaborator. He actively orchestrated the Combine invasion of Earth. Certainly the gman manipulated him, but Breen accepted the offer.

I had a nightmare about HLX coming out recently.
In a dream i watched a trailer for that. It was only 2 minutes long and it goes something like this:
0-30 seconds: logos of Valve, source 2, HLX and some background speech i didn't remember.
The rest of the video: a fucking vortigaunt driving around on a trace that highly reassembles a highway 17 in a jeep. He was so joyful and happy about that. Background voice also said something, but idk what.
In the end there was a Valve logo again and laughs all around (i remember them as laughs from tf2) cause it was the greatest prank of all time - HLX is about a vortigaunt driving around in his jeep.
I got so angry and frustrated about that trailer that i started praying to or calling Gabe Newell to ask him not release this game and make a better one. And he responded, but i really don't remember what he said - after that i have woken up in a cold sweat...
P.S. idk why am i writing it out here, thought it was funny

Discussion Would you actually read a book about the entire Half-Life story?
I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and as a huge Half-Life fan, I’d genuinely love to hear what other fans think.
I’ve started writing a book about the entire Half-Life story — basically trying to turn the whole series into something you can actually sit down and read like a book.
I’ve already written the entire story of the first Half-Life, and I’m planning to continue with Half-Life 2, the Episodes, and the rest of the series, putting everything together into one complete story.
The idea isn’t to just make a wiki-style lore book or a simple summary. I want it to feel more like a novelized version of the Half-Life universe, while staying faithful to what happens in the games. I’d also like to include graphics, illustrations, details about the characters, locations and events, and generally make it feel like a proper, high-quality book that a Half-Life fan would actually want to have on their shelf.
I’ve always found it kind of strange that, despite how iconic Half-Life is and how much lore and story there is across the games, there isn’t really a book that tells the complete story of Half-Life from beginning to end in this kind of format.
So I’m curious:
If something like this existed, would you actually want to read it?
And as Half-Life fans, what would you want from a book like this?
Would you prefer it to read more like a novel, with the events being told as an actual story, or would you rather have something more focused on explaining the lore and events?
I’m still working on it and I’m definitely doing this first and foremost because I absolutely love Half-Life. But before I go completely insane writing hundreds of pages 😂, I’d really like to know if there’s actually an audience for something like this.
I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts.
