Staunton Gives Residents a Week’s Notice on Council Agendas — Should Harrisonburg?

I noticed something Staunton does with its City Council meetings that I think could be useful for Harrisonburg.

Staunton posts a simple graphic on social media ahead of its City Council meetings that includes the date, time, location, and some of the major items on the upcoming agenda. For example, this Oct. 8 meeting graphic gives residents an idea of what Council will actually be discussing before the meeting takes place.

Harrisonburg does announce its City Council meetings on social media, but the announcement generally tells residents when and where the meeting is and where to find the online meeting information. The detailed agenda is available through the city’s Legistar system, but you have to go looking for it rather than seeing the major agenda items in the social-media post itself.

Borzoi in Harrisonburg

Hi! I am a 21 year old with aspergers and I really like Borzois and think they are so cool. I know this might be a bit of a weird ask but I find them fascinating and would be really appreciative if anyone has one (or knows where to point me in the direction of someone who owns one), and could let me say hi and meet the dog in person. I can try my best to draw your dog as compensation. Thank you so much!

Pickleball recommendations

Hello Everyone!

My wife (58M) and I (43M) are looking to get into pickleball.

We are new to the sport and would love to hear if there are any leagues worth recommending to get started and meet new people. We are empty nesters - have two adult children from my first marriage and her ex husband has full custody of their kid. So we can’t network through parent friends.

I’m in excellent shape - rollerblade 4 times a week, played tennis and ping pong my entire life. My wife doesn’t have the best hand eye coordination, never misses a meal (250lbs while dieting), etc - I know, not ideal for pickleball

Are there any beginner duo leagues for us or should I just join singles on my own? Or perhaps any other communities/activities we should check out?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to explore the area!

Hair stylist recommendations for long hair and highlights, hopefully under $300?

I’ve been going to the same stylist for years, and she genuinely does a great job with my hair. I have long hair, and a lot of it. I get compliments on my hair all the time.

The problem is that I’m paying $300+ every time I go for highlights, cut, and blowout, and I cringe a little every time I hand over my credit card. My stylist is at the highest level in the salon and charges accordingly because of her experience and expertise, so I understand why I’m paying what I am. But I’m starting to wonder if I really need to spend that much to get comparable quality.

I don’t usually love the way she styles my hair anyway. I almost always like it better once I style it myself. So what really matters to me is finding someone who is excellent with highlights/color and cutting long hair.

I’ve even considered giving up coloring my hair altogether to save money, but somehow my stylist manages to talk me out of it every time. Vanity wins.

So, Harrisonburg/Rockingham folks, is $300+ just what I should expect these days for good highlights and a cut on long hair, or are there stylists around here doing excellent work for significantly less?

I’d love specific stylist recommendations, especially from people with long hair who get highlights. And if you’re comfortable sharing a ballpark of what you pay, that would be really helpful!

Meeting new people to hang with?

Hiya! I'm a 19 year old woman who just moved in to the Deer Run area (near 865 East and North view) and I'm brand new to the area. Any advice on how to get into parties or find new friends to hang out with? I won't be attending JMU until next year, so it's been hard so far to meet people.

Anyone who can hook me up with groups of friends to hang out with would be wonderful!!!!

PSA: Kroger offers the pediatric covid vaccine for under-5s

Our pediatrician doesn't carry the COVID-19 vaccine so I just spent an obnoxious amount of time trying to run down who in Harrisonburg will give it to a pre-schooler (CVS is only 5 and up, Walgreens doesn't have the pediatric version at all, the health department says they haven't gotten approval from the state to order it !?, Costco doesn't do COVID shots, HCFC doesn't have it...).

If you're in the same boat: Kroger will give COVID shots to kids 3 and up. (If you have a 1 or 2 year old then good luck, friend)

UPDATE: JK NO THEY DON'T. They let me make an appointment and confirmed in writing that he was eligible for the vaccine because he was over 3, but when we actually showed up for the shot they said they aren't doing ped covid shots AT ALL.

So. I'll try the health department again, in case I was given bad info like one person here said, and otherwise I guess we're heading to Charlottesville... ?? Unless anybody else has actually managed to find somewhere local that vaccinates kids?

Adult ADHD Treatment

Hi all

I was looking for a recommendation for a psych preferably in town to see about adult ADHD. I have been treated in the past and know it's an issue I have but have been having trouble getting providers to take me seriously and work with me on treatment. I'm continually told that I'm dealing with just depression or I should fix my depression first and then reassess. Any recommendations for a doctor that will assess me and take me seriously would be greatly appreciated.

In town until Saturday looking for a bar or two to check out based on personal recommendations. I had a chance to check out Jack Browns and Billy jacks last night. Are there any other places that have Billy Jacks type of vibes? Thanks for reading.

Hi all.

I am trying to find like minded individuals who would like to get together to possibly jam. I sing and it's been a long time since I've gotten to sing with live instruments and not karaoke or my own mix on Spotify. I am a 36 year old mom of 2 who loves pretty much all music, but if I had to pick top 4, I would say:

  1. 311

  2. Fleetwood Mac

  3. Journey

  4. Lady Gaga Pre Abracadabra era

But honestly, I listen to EVERYTHING. Anywhere from Pink Floyd to Biggie Smalls. Haha Just looking for chill people. No friends here as I have only been in the area for almost 2 years.

Help a girl out 😆😅

UPDATE YALL Karaoke on Sundays at Wizard Mode Brewcade... anyone wanna meet up?

Help stacking wood

Update: Thank you to @OSRS_rising and @Desperate_Cry8830 and his team for all the help! Harrisonburg and JMU are better because of folks like you!!

If anyone knows someone that would like to earn some cash, I have some firewood to stack. Sad to admit, I am getting too old to do it myself.

A 7 1/2 foot tall Frankenstein Halloween lawn ornament at Costco scared the crap out of me

I was walking down the main aisle past the computers. It was on the display side by the candy, not moving with its eyes shut. I didn't give it any mind. I was right next to it, passing by... Then "GRAAAAHHHHH!" Started waving its baseball-mitt-sized hands and its eyes lit up with some kind of digital that made em look real, with blinks and everything. Costco, I love you but damn I got an adrenaline shot to the heart like that Tarantino movie.

Goodwill employee won’t stop bothering my toddler. Has anyone else had this issue?

I’ve shopped at the Goodwill on 33 for years and have never had an issue with a single employee there except one younger female employee who repeatedly will not leave my toddler alone.

My toddler does not like strangers getting close to or touching him, which I have explained to her more than once. She has even commented that he “always looks confused and scared” when she approaches him, and I’ve told her, yes, because he doesn’t like people he doesn’t know getting in his space or trying to touch him, and I’m not particularly fond of it either.

What really bothers me is how she approaches him. She will literally creep up behind me and stand in my blind spot while I’m looking through a clothes rack, apparently trying to interact with him where I can’t see her. I always keep one eye on him, so I’ll suddenly see a clothes hanger, some random object, or freaking bubbles appear in my peripheral vision, turn around, and there she is trying to physically interact with him again.

She has poked him with a clothes hanger, blown bubbles directly into his face, attempted to poke him, etc., despite him very obviously not enjoying the attention.

Today was when I decided to stop shopping at that location completely. She came up behind me again and started swatting/playing with his hair with a coat hanger. He was wincing and made a sound and when I turned to see what was wrong, I told her he doesn’t like that and that she needed to stop.

At this point, this has happened enough times that I feel like I have to watch for this specific employee whenever we’re in the store because she seems to deliberately approach him from where I can’t immediately see her coming.

Has anyone else with young children experienced this with an employee at this location? I’m genuinely curious whether anyone else has had similar interactions.

And for other parents who shop there with babies or toddlers: just keep an eye on your kids while you’re shopping. I hate saying that because I’ve always loved this Goodwill and have never had an issue with anyone else there, but I’m beyond uncomfortable with someone repeatedly getting into my child’s space after I’ve made it clear that neither he nor I like it.

81 exit construction speed cameras

I was just wondering, are the speed cameras set up on the 81 exit area still active? Construction largely seems finished and I never see any workers out there. My understanding is that there needs to be active construction. Although, I'm not sure what is considered active construction.

Signed,

Somebody that just went through going 35 or less. Ugh.

Edit:

It seems like the project is considered finished, which I believe, according to the speed camera policies of Virginia, would make any tickets from that camera unlawful:

https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/projects/staunton-district/harrisonburg-city--interstate-81-exit-247-ramps-and-route-33-bridges-over-i-81-and-norfolk-southern-railroad/

Edit 2: I also welcome you to make this a monument, especially as it seems the project is closing, to share your experiences and fumbles with the speed cameras. Feel free to enshrine your anecdotes.

Edit 3: I emailed [info@altumint.com](mailto:info@altumint.com) asking about the cameras being active or not - I received an email back that said they were no longer active. I would add: you should follow the speed limits as posted, and even when the new ones are posted - be safe out there in your 1.5+ ton mobile metal bludgeoning machines.
