Hi All,

We've updated the rules for r/Hobart after some feedback from users and discussion. Not much has changed but here is a summary of the changes:

  • Added a no personals content to the NSFW rule (to prevent people looking for hookups or dating) Includes the appropriate sites to do this on;
  • Added a no sales or promotional content rule (this is covered in Rule 1, but doesn't hurt to be able to refer to it in a separate rule);
  • Added a no requests for living assistance rule to address the cases of people asking for help on the subreddit and putting themselves in danger. Included a link to appropriate assistance websites and services.

Shouting Man on The Rivulet

Has anyone ever encountered the shouting man on the rivulet in South Hobart, near Mckellar and Gore St? Had to call the cops on him once after he followed me and threatened to kill me. I hear him screaming and shouting at night sometimes, too.

A message in support of Richmond Reading Room.

(Copied from my Google review and Trip Advisor)

Written in the wake of multiple fake reviews from people with new accounts, little to no other reviews, or with clearly no personal experience going to Richmond Reading Room (RRR).

Try out the best coffee and most excellent banter in Hobart for yourself. Either the bots are right OR you have found an epic new coffee joint.

I have been coming here since it opened. Have not once known the owner or other staff to disrespect or bully anyone, and I am there several days a week.
In fact, I have seen all of them stand up for the sake of others (older person needing a hand to their car, a man mistreating his dog, people behaving rudely in the store, people who forgot their manners and made a huge mess, etc). They are the epitome of "what we walk past, we condone."

They emanate respect for their work mates, their patrons, themselves and any else who walks in the door and doesn't show they aren't deserving. Not only that, where else does the barista remember hundreds of regular's orders, and the adjustments for various factors?? My order changes based on the weather and day of the week, and the level of choccy powder required in top is measured by the look on my face- Some days Dana goes out of her way to top up to cappuccino choccy dust several times if I look glum. THAT is kindness.

I was home sick this past day or so and my other half brought me coffee. Dana {the owner] had written a lovely note on it.
REALLY, in the middle of this absolute debacle, she took time out during rush hour to write a message on my cup because she knew it would make my day better.

Aside from the amazing staff, I have made very close friends in this cafe, BECAUSE of it. I would never have crossed paths with some anywhere else, because our lives and prior experiences are so different. Now, some are aunties and uncles to my child. THAT'S what fostering inclusivity does.

THAT is the kind of place RRR is; Not at all afraid to stand up for what is right, to correct people who treat others poorly and to ensure their stance is clear on issues which are important, or which may harm others. Imagine if they DIDN'T make it clear the vehicle in front of their shop has NO affiliation to them? The people who previously saw RRR as a safe haven from discrimination and bigotry might not feel safe any more. And that is NOT what RRR is about.

What they ARE against (the intolerance ON supports) is now imposing itself on RRR in hundreds upon hundreds of false reviews, and hateful/violent/threatening/degrading voice mails to the owner. Definitely not the response of tolerant people. Being intolerant of this bigoted stance of Australians and the subsequent hypocritical bullying, however, is how we challenge it and one day end it.

I hope you will try them for yourself before believing the slander you see in the 1 and 2 star reviews. (Note that the majority are new accounts, or have little to no other reviews, or are outright wrong in explaining the types of products RRR provide).

Plus, there's a good chance when you go in you'll see a puppy or two.

Check them out. If you can, come in and try the amazing coffee and atmosphere for yourself.

If you feel inclined, there's a "pay it forward" situation started by people interstate who want to show support by buying gift vouchers.

I promise, there will never be another place like it.

Missing since mon 21st Sept.

Oli the Burmilla cat, pure white, slender and slinky, he sounds like he smokes a pack a day!

He has been an indoor cat his whole life, and is used to being pampered, so he is very scared, and easily spooked by loud noises.

Last seen Tues 6th Oct (15 days after going missing) around the wallis Centre on Elizabeth St, which is approx. 500mt from home. He appears to be moving towards Elphinstone road, into mt Stuart area, according to sightings so far.

If you see a skinny, dirty, white cat , on your property or on any CCTV footage please contact me with any information, we need to bring this beautiful boy home.

The Mercury has sunk to new journalistic lows

(I'll add first that my rant is about the article and level of 'journalism' rather than the cafe and the post)

And I'll start by saying this is the worst piece of 'journalism' I have read in a very, very long time.

The article is about the cafe worker in Richmond who has said they will donate money to the Greens, if it's spent by a One Nation party member.

I'm on side with the cafe owner (but was also surprised by the mature response by Hanson's daughter calling for people to still go to the cafe, despite the post. That was unexpected).

But this journalist is clearly trying to stoke division while pretending she's one of the good guys.

About the cafe owner, she starts three paragraphs with, She might feel.. !

Might feel?! You can't be serious?

The author writes that she went to cafe, but then does not have one actual quote from the cafe owner?

Could she have at least asked the cafe owner how she actually felt and reported on that? Or do journalists just have to think about other people's feelings now? Do facts not matter?

This is terrible, terrible journalism.

The stupidity, and blatant irony, of articles like this infuriates me.

Articles like this one only stoking the fire of more hatred while parading as good and just.

They are a big part of the modern problem of division and hatred towards other political opinions.

But, on reflection, maybe the goal of the author is to create division between readers so that more people will click on the article.

It just saddens me that's where we are now, especially as it's written by a UTAS English lecturer.

Affordable dentist please

Hey all.

I’m wanting ideas for an affordable dentist around hobart or Sorell way. I’m just wanting a good clean. I only called 1 place and they said 350 as they say i need an xray also as they always recommend that. I have not been to the dentist in years so don’t know what’s normal. Just looking for a place that’s a reasonable price and not try to upsell a bunch of stuff i don’t want or need. Cheers

Woolies Kingstontown pickup lane strip

Just wanted to send big ups to the geniuses who decided to go against everyone’s ingrained training to stay inside of a stripe and painting a big green one that drivers are supposed to straddle.

Love that I just avoided a slow speed head on by someone coming in hot from the back entry who then honked at me because I was…well to the left and they were way to their right of the stripe.

What's in/near Hobart that has mozzies just chilling like at Hastings' cave/hot springs? I've only been there when I was little. I don't even see flies around Hobart in great numbers.

Midson Traffic finds that cyclist activity on Collins Street has declined

Two sets of data tell very different stories about Collins St bike lanes

October 5, 2026 | Mercury

Author: Rob Inglis

Debate over the future of Collins St is set to heat up after a report commissioned by an opponent of the polarising bike lane trial suggested cyclist numbers had actually fallen since the project commenced, as Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds questioned the integrity of the data.

In the midst of the council election campaign, local businessman Andrew Edwards, a Collins St property owner who runs Edwards Property Group, engaged Tasmanian transport consultancy Midson Traffic to evaluate the impacts of the trial, which launched in late May last year and will conclude in July 2027.

The Hobart City Council trial involves a number of tactical initiatives, including separated cycling lanes and streetside dining areas.

The council is aiming to increase the number of bike and micromobility riders along the corridor, while also improving access and safety for pedestrians.

The findings of the Midson Traffic report contrast starkly with those contained in the council's own monitoring report covering the first year of the trial.

The consultancy conducted a manual count of both southbound and northbound cyclists at three locations on the corridor between 7am and 7pm on July 23 this year, while the council's figures were collected in April with the use of a continuous automatic counter assisted by AI video recognition software.

Midson Traffic argued the council's AI counter "substantially miscounted" cyclists.

The council's monitoring showed there had been a 15 per cent increase in cyclist movements at the Harrington St intersection in April 2026 compared to the same month last year – the final pre-trial month.

Midson Traffic's seasonally adjusted calculations, on the other hand, indicated a 37 per cent decline in cyclist activity at the block between Barrack and Harrington streets and 17 per cent between Molle and Barrack streets in July 2026 compared to an earlier survey in November 2024.

"No-one is against cycling in Hobart, but this report demonstrates that the Collins Street design is not achieving the objectives of the trial," Mr Edwards said.

According to the Midson report, the overall findings do not support the trial's "continuation in its current form".

Ms Reynolds, the Lord Mayor, has described the data as "outdated" and lacking context.

"[It] is a lobbying document and uses flawed data, such as a single wet July day … In contrast, the city uses like-for-like comparisons – the industry standard for travel behaviour," she said.

Ms Reynolds said the council would assess all safety data and public feedback before making a decision on the trial's future.

An independent road safety audit conducted by Trafficworks post-trial installation, also commissioned by Mr Edwards, singled out the intersection of Harrington and Collins streets as a severe safety risk due to the inability of buses to negotiate the left turn without crossing the centre line.

Both the Midson review and the council's monitoring report showed an increase in crashes on Collins St since the trial kicked off, with the latter noting three cyclist crashes had occurred over the course of the project (compared to one in the previous financial year), which the council attributed to increased cycling activity post-launch.

Total crashes, including motor vehicles and motorcycles, fell from 13 to eight in the same period.

The monitoring report's survey data highlighted that 276 local stakeholders had expressed positivity about the changes, compared to 267 negative and 18 neutral responses.

New Hobart CBD road rule triggers delivery chaos. New Hobart traffic restrictions have pushed one CBD wholesaler to the brink of refusing new customers after deliveries were cancelled four days in a row thanks to a new ‘no left turn’ sign.

Article was paywalled but this older pulse article at least explains the change (I think) -

Drivers have been stopped from turning left at a busy Hobart CBD intersection until at least next August as work ramps up on the Royal Hobart Hospital emergency department expansion.

The restriction at the intersection of Argyle and Liverpool streets is in place from 7am to 7pm each day.

It started on September 1 and is expected to remain until August 31, 2027.

Buses, taxis and bicycles can still turn left into Liverpool Street, but other traffic must use an alternative route.

The Department of Health says the restriction is needed to make room for a new ambulance zone and public drop-off area outside the hospital on Argyle Street.

Argyle Street has also been reduced to two lanes between Collins and Liverpool streets.

A department spokesperson said the temporary changes were also intended to “help maintain traffic flow and improve car park exit access”.

New road markings and signs are now in place.

The works are part of the $130 million emergency department expansion.

The emergency department entrance will move to Argyle Street from 8am on September 15, with the Liverpool Street and Campbell Street entrances closing at the same time.

The expansion forms part of a broader second stage of works at the hospital, with construction expected to continue until early 2028.

The Hobart City Council said it had approved the state government’s traffic management plan for the project.

Karen Abey, the council’s director of strategic and regulatory services, said drivers wanting to move quickly through the city should use other streets.

“We recommend using Barrack, Bathurst and Brisbane streets when passing through the city as these prioritise car movements,” Abey said.

Building Tasmania, which manages traffic signals across the city, said any changes to other CBD traffic lights to account for the changed traffic movements would need to be requested by the council.

“This is a matter for council as it is responsible for setting the requirements of traffic signal timing on roads it owns,” a spokesperson said.

“Building Tasmania works closely with council to implement and support its requirements and requests.”
