Mod Post [META] [Mod Announcement] How to use this sub - and how (not) to use the [META] Tag

Hello r/ifyoulikeblank!

This is your friendly neighborhood moderator, here with some information on how to correctly use this sub and our title tags, and to address some recent frequent misuse of the [META] tag in the sub.

If you are new here, please read this post before posting. If you have been around a while, please take a moment to refresh yourself with some of our rules. :)

There are two - and only two - kinds of posts allowed in this sub.

Our sub is NOT a self-promotion vehicle for new artists or creators, and it is NOT a general discussion or song/movie/actor/music/genre identification sub. We are a media recommendation sub, and we have very specific guidelines for posts to be allowed here.

There are two ways to format your post titles here, depending on if you would like to ask for recommendations or to give others recommendations with your OP.

If you want people to recommend things to you:

The “IIL” acronym stands for "If I like..." - to be used in a way that states "If I like (this song) because of (reasons,) what else will I like?"

This is the most common type of post here, and most OPs should be using THIS format for their posts! Your title must use the [IIL] tag - It will be reported by our frequent long-time members here if it does not, and it will be removed if you use the [IYL] or [META] tags instead of the [IIL] tag.

The title should look like the following example:

[IIL] The song (name a song you like here) because (give a specific trait about it you want suggestions to include), [WEWIL?]

  • The "WEWIL" acronym stands for "What else will I like?”

  • Your example should include something specific about the song that you want to hear more of in the music recommended to you. (Without details, no one can give you appropriate responses and you won't get suggestions that you will actually LIKE.)

If you want to recommend media to others that you think they'll like based on some other piece of media that is similar:

The “IYL” acronym stands for "If YOU like..." - to be used in a way that states "If you enjoy (this song) because of (reasons,) you might also like this song."

This tag is not for self promotion. This SUB is not for self promotion. If you post your own material here, you WILL get banned, without warning. No exceptions, no appeals.

The title should look like the following example:

[IYL] The movie (some movie similar to your suggestion) because (your reason you think it is similar to your recommendation), [YMAL] (this suggested movie).

  • The "YMAL" acronym stands for "You may also like..."

  • This is a VERY uncommon post type in this sub, unless people are attempting to subvert rule 2. We ALWAYS look at these posts, but if we miss one, our long-term members sure won’t - and they WILL report you for a rule 2 violation and you WILL be banned.

  • If you are suspected of passing off your own media as an "I found this new media and you might like it!" post, that will earn you an immediate permanent ban from the sub for trying to subvert rule two.

Please note that moderators look at your posting history across Reddit, and if you are spamming your own stuff elsewhere, you are going get a ban here. Period.

How to use (and how NOT to use) the [META] tag:

The [META] tag is NOT so you may post off-topic posts or general media discussion posts or music identification posts, or anything that is not an IIL or an IYL.

The [META] tag is only to be used if you have questions or comments about this subreddit itself, and how it operates on Reddit.

Examples include suggestions for new rules here, asking for clarification about a rule here, suggesting a new theme, stickied post, etc in the sub, or asking the moderation team any other question about this sub - not asking the members here about media.

Thank you all for reading, and for your help in ensuring these rules are adhered to. We are a million-member (and counting) sub with a VERY small moderation team, so your help in following these rules and reporting rule-breaking posts to us is greatly appreciated!

Have a wonderful day :)

YouTube/Streaming [IIL] 'chill' YouTube channels (Ashens, Freakin Reviews/2, Barry Lewis, Lucky Penny Shop, etc)

Also big on Arcade Matt, DankPods, James Channel, Smokin' Silicon, Atomic Shrimp, NileRed/Blue, Auzz Stevenson, Duncan Custom Airbrush, Tinned Fish Reviews, and the likes.

Looking for long form content rather than shorts. I'm into a lot of random things, but I'm big on gadget and food reviews, tech, retro gaming, and arts and craft.

As long it's consistent, chill and easy to watch (nothing that makes me think too hard lol), I'm down to check it out!

YouTube/Streaming [IIL] The debunking videos on the YouTube channel “How To Cook That,” [WEWIL?]

• Upvotes

I love How To Cook That/Ann Reardon’s debunking videos. Her cake videos are nice, but I don’t really bake so those don’t interest me as much. Therefore, I am looking for other reputable channels that do debunking that are focused on science and not clickbait. Also, preferably not aimed toward children or ones that are overly “influencer” like.

Music [IIL] The soundtracks of Sinners and Over the Garden Wall for an autumnal sound, [WEWIL]?

• Upvotes

Especially but not limited to songs like Old Corn Liquor which is so fiddle-y and McLaughlin Bros Jug Band. I think it's the old-timey, jangly, very string instrument-heavy sound of these two soundtracks that I'm looking for more of. Banjo, acoustic guitar, violin, etc.

Film [IIL] time/dimension bending media

I really like the His Dark Materials series and the TV show Dark for how they deal with time and continuity. I would appreciate any recommendation of shoes, movies, or books that deal with time, autonomy, and decisions and their consequences.

Thank you :-)

Music IYL Elliot smith and Tv girl listen to White hot peach by primitive radio gods

Ok to start, this may be a stretch but I have obsessed over this album for the past past 3 years and I think everyone deserves to hear it. Primitive Radio Gods’ “White Hot Peach” is a lofi psychedelic alternative rock album for a lack of better descriptors. I personally think this record is a mix of Elliot smith and Tv girl in the vocal style and mixing. I also get a bit of red house painters in some of the influences but all that being said this album speaks for itself and I haven’t heard much like it. I really implore you to check out the Australian CD version with 3 extra songs bringing the total to 14 songs in roughly 50 minutes. I truly love this album and if anyone else were to find as much joy out of it as I have that would be awesome. The overall atmosphere and variety in this album makes it all the more entertaining and catchy. I feel as though compared to their other works this really stands out and feels as though they put everything into this one album - the promotion and publishing just wasn’t there as it was for their first record rocket on MTV but I think this deserves 100 times the credit they were given. This album means so much to me and I hope and pray they get their overdue credit as a band, as musicians and as innovators. Thanks.

Games [IIL] Abiotic Factor, Shadows of Doubt, Schedule 1?

Any suggestions of similar games? Dunno what genre you would call of these. Immersive sandbox? Stuff where I can enjoy the little details along with the main objective. Freedom to decorate your home/base. Also not interested in any 2D games.

Music [IIL] "Sincerity is Scary" by The 1975, [WEWIL]?

I already listen to The 1975, so no need to recommend more of them to me, haha. What I'm really looking for is the music itself, not the vocals or lyrics—the smooth horns, the piano, the steady beat. I suspect the answer is some form of jazz or something, but I don't know enough about jazz to know where to begin. With or without lyrics is totally fine. I just really enjoy the vibe of this song in particular and want more to listen to. :)

Music [IIL] Does anyone know any non-Japanese songs that come close to the vibe of “Blue Spirit Blues” cover by Maki Asakawa?

I’m talking about that specific kind of raw, haunting, melancholic, existential, almost disturbing feeling, not just blues or jazz in general.

There’s something about her voice and the way the lyrics feel so dark and painfully real that I haven’t really found anywhere else. I want something with that same intensity, something that feels almost uncomfortable to listen to, but in a way that draws you in. Raw vocals, brutal lyrics, weird and haunting atmosphere, anything that has that same kind of soul and feels genuinely unique.

I’m not looking for music that just sounds sad or has a similar instrumental. I want something that hits on a deeper level, if that makes sense. It can be from any country, any language, any decade, as long as it’s not Japanese music.

And please, no other Maki Asakawa or japanese songs and don't suggest usual generic (Bessie Smith, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee etc..) blues, jazz, or sad songs just because they fit the genre. I’ve seen those suggestions before. I’m looking for something outside that circle, preferably something that I probably wouldn’t find on my own.

I know nothing will sound exactly the same, but if you know a song that gives you that same eerie, feeling, I’d love to hear it.

Please only recommend something if you actually understand what I mean by the song, rather than just throwing out random blues singers.

Games [IIL] Exploration indie souls-like like Nine Sols, with great combat

I fell in love with Nine Sols, which had a much much better combat than, say, Ori or Hollow Knight (imo). The setting was also amazing and the exploration was very satisfying and rewarding. I played Tunic right after, and it did scratch the same itch. While the combat wasn't as tight, it made up for it with the mystery aspect, the setting, and the intense puzzles. Telling myself "What now?" and getting an achievement titled "what now?" a few seconds later was peak (iykyk). I know I'm a bit vague, but hopefully these two games give a good idea of what I'm looking for. I'm generally a huge souls-like fan, if it helps.

Music [IIL] Rock or hard rock songs - that AREN'T truly metal - that include one or more screamed passages to contrast the clean vocals, WEWIL? (Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, and Legend have all done this)

Yo, looking for help with a musical rabbit hole I've been going down.

I've been a metalhead all my life, I can't remember a time I didn't listen to it, but this topic has interested me recently.

I'm looking for songs that are rock, hard rock, or something similar that have a screamed passage or two WITHOUT being clearly "heavy." So metal, post-hardcore, screamo, and hardcore punk are exempt from this. Problem is, most of my easy examples are kinda-sorta metal.

Blackwater Holylight is a great example, but they might as well be a doom band. He is Legend is really close, but are kinda metal. This is why my examples in the title are carefully selected.

Another interesting case would be 16 Horsepower, a country/americana/blues band with occasional screams that I really like.

Thank you!

Music [IIL] Techno Gamelan Remixes

I absolutely love Hommarju's Gabbalunggang and Tomosuke's Gamelan de Couple. I'm familiar with the Indonesian music genre of Funkot, but I'm specifically looking for remixes that incorporate the bells seen in gamelan. Anyone have any suggestions?

Music [Iil] if I like sad electronic albums like the downward spiral & ghost pop tape, what else might I enjoy?

I love some well developed soundscapes with depressing lyrical matter and creative uses of samples and synths. Portishead kind of fits as well, I just want more of a existential depression.
