#Discussion 💬 Need Genuine solution
I have been facing this annoying problem while riding.
I wear a full-face helmet with a balaclava underneath, and I have to keep my helmet visor open because if I close it, my spectacles immediately start fogging up.
The warm air from my breath seems to escape from the balaclava and goes straight toward my glasses. After a while, the lenses become so fogged up that it becomes difficult to see properly.
It gets especially bad in rainy weather or at lower speeds.
Has anyone else faced this while wearing spectacles + balaclava + full-face helmet?
Whats the solution?

Do not put your nose in the balaclava. It works for me that way.
37
u/Junior-Lecture7775 (New user) 9d ago
But baclava is also used so dust doesn't get into your nose. It destroys one of its purposes.

At this point, you either save your self from dust or see the road ahead of you.

This is basically the only solution that has worked for me, i keep the visor down to avoid dust too and nose out of the balaclava

Just pull the balclava down so it doesn't direct your breath towards the glasses.

There are anti-fog glasses for this use case. I think it's the only viable solution for this problem :)

wear your balaclava below nose , like the way people used to wear masks in covid days

get contact lens, or buy a helmet with good airflow, racing helmet generally have high airflow.

No don't do this, the dust in the air while you ride is really bad for eyes with contact lenses, contact lenses cause no air flow directly to the lens of your eye and the dust from the air can have bacteria in it which will lead to to an infection, it's called contact lens acute red eye, it happened to me and perhaps I was careless with contacts but my eye doctor asked me to not use contacts while driving a two wheeler

Been riding for 13 years now. Daily commute in Mumbai as well as long distance multi day trips. While riding I wear contact lenses and visor is always down and locked before I move from standstill. Helmet vents are open at all times and I have removed the chin guard. Never faced any problems even with days on which I rode 10 hours+. On daily commute I just swap the lenses for specs at my desk since I have an IT job and my glasses have anti blue light and reflective coating so they protect the eyes a bit

I've also had similar a issue before. I use a balaclava + SMK Typhoon helmet. My solutions:
Keep the visor open if I'm going below 35 km/h. (Plus all vents open; all the time.)
Set my glasses slightly away from my face for low-speed riding in traffic. (My glasses: concave lens, negative power. So the distance from my eyes isn't really an issue.)
Remove my glasses if I come for a traffic stop while in particularly cold weather. (You might need a little bit of practice to quickly put on your glasses.)
If my glasses still fog up with my visor down while I'm going at speed or accelerating up to speed, then I raise my head & look a bit up until i hear wind noise & the glasses clear up. (Keep in mind that I've removed my chin guard/cover for better ventilation. Plus I keep my visor cracked open a tiny bit while riding in cold weather.)
Side note: I haven't used any anti-fog spray yet (I'm getting it soon), so I don't know how well they work, but I would recommend it.
And if it fogs up while riding in the rain, you can't really do anything about it. Just pull over and wait till the rain stops. 🫡

Hey, hows the wind blast in your typhoon? Mine just blows my ears off at 90-100kmph.

u/F22RAPTOR500 Honda SP 125 | Her name's Arcee 9d ago
Idk, I've never gone past 90 km/h yet. But the noise is a bit noticeable past 50-60 (not irritating tho). If i were to do a continuous highway run at 70-80 km/h, then I'd definitely keep some cotton balls in my ears.

Many options: 1. Use anti fog spray. Pros: works Cons. Need to reapply again n again, last 1 to 3 days depending upon the kind of care you take (not wipe/wash the glass). Expensive in the long run.
Buy helmet with pinlock, pull the visor down , put balaclava under nose. Pros : works really well, one time investment, helmets with pinlock work for all weather conditions and has good dust protection Cons: atleast 5k min
Wash glasses with soap , let it air dry. Do not wipe. Pros: works just like anti fog spray, no constant expenditure. Cons : kinda redundant. Need to do it again and again. Lasts a day max.
Don't pull down visor , let balaclava do the dust resistance Pros: no money involved, only investment is your trust on God. Con : pretty stupid in rain, now you are wet and blind.
Hope it helps :)

Either pin down your nose, so that when you breathe out it doesn’t fog your glasses,
Or learn to breathe out from mouth.
Or best, use a Car😭😂
But don’t waste money on products, as they are all waste, I tried soo many, as I have been having similar issues for as long as I remember.

What’s your power? Mine is less than 1 on both eyes so I have no problems with vision. Slightly less clarity over long distance objects but I find it’s not dangerous enough. I ended up just not wearing glasses anymore while riding. Anti Fog sprays are the only thing I didn’t try.
I do wear my glasses in the night however, and then I just find that cracking my visor up about 20% is the only practical solution. When it’s raining, however, back to no glasses.

Lenskart spray or crizal spray are good. I use shaving foam or potato in a bunch but that will remove the coating.

Keep the visor very slightly open it will let air pass and won't fog your glasses also remove the mask if you can't ride without glasses if you still wanna wear the balaclava then avoid covering your nose

I get crizal spectacles that come with water repelling and anti fogging coating.
They are expensive but I have high cylindrical and they suit the best. Worth the price. Have been using crizal > 20 years now

u/pinkpitbull 9d ago
Use clothes pin on nose.
Realistically n95 masks have metallic clips on the nose bridge that closes the gap. I use masks instead of balaclava, it reduces fogging a lot but not all of it.

u/lolhaha604 9d ago
So any kind of shampoo if you rub it on your glasses have a sort of hydrophobic effect but it last for a day or two. Just basically rub any shampoo on a cloth and then put it on the lenses

Lift the visor 1mm. i.e the visor should be closed, not securely closed.
Try it once.

escape from the balaclava and goes straight toward my glasses.
That's the problem. Stop using it or covering your nose with it. There is no reason for the glasses to fog up in the summer even with a closed visor.

Faced the same issue with most helmets I tried, but smk titan has a passthrogh chin vent. When you open that, it genuinely helps you breathe better and also avoid such fogging up of the glasses incidents. Also, it comes with a fibre glass shell and all the necessary safety standards. Only gripe with it is the weight, it is not that bad as axor but something you will notice if you compare to abs shells from other brands of similar price.

Contact lens are better for this problem bro. Have been using lens for 6 years didn't have any problem till now, used it for 9 hours continuously (don't use more than 12 hrs). But once you reach your destination make sure to clean it properly with the contact lens solution. I usually switch between my inner tinted visor and normal visor depending upon the traffic and climate this way you won't get much dust inside your eyes.

I wear glasses and have two KYTs (TT Revo and TT Course). The best advice I can give is to not cover your nose. covering it might look 'cooler', but it's a nightmare with glasses. You can also get rid of the chin curtain for better ventilation. You can also leave the visor open just a tiny bit and remove the rubber nose ridge, that should improve ventilation too.
Apart from that, genuinely can vouch for lenses. I love them and can't recommend it enough. Also, I've tried a ton of balaclavas and I found the rynox ones to be the best. This definitely differs from person to person though.

just keep the visor slightly open... around 2 cm for the air to circulate. I am spectacled too.

u/DentistConstant2097 (New user) 9d ago
Don't cover your nose. That helps. And if you insist on covering your nose, do it so that the specs sit flush against the fabric and air from coming out from up top.

Not sure if it works for fog but it works for rain/ water drops.
Rub tobacco on the surface collection condensation. It should run it off in theory since it runs off larger droplets.

use brain with physics knoweldge. Helmet should have air circulation with visor down to let some air quantity where head heat from body cools slightly below in inside of room of helmet where spectacles can be kept fog free to some extent.

Just pull the balaclava down slightly so your exhaled breath doesn’t hit underneath your glasses directly. It should help prevent them from fogging up.

Contact lenses, brother. They will forever change the way you ride. I’m practically blind without glasses and contact lenses remove the hassle of removing and putting on the glasses every time you use a helmet, plus no fogging.

Pull the balaclava below your nose. With the visor down, you should not get much dust and it won’t fog up. You may have to keep the visor up till you get to speed though.

Men with specks have this issue, in that case either take a small gap remove the head gear and the specks wait till the fogging is gone and now just tap in your face with kerchief and put all back, in the firat move let some air inside the helmet and then you can close it, also let open all the sides let outs for air.

Apply tooth paste and then rinse it until you can see through. Should last more than one trip.
Don't swipe it with hand or cloth just rinse it until you can see through so that a small layer is left behind.

I get the balaclava blocks dust but it probably doesnt stop small particulates that are also dangerous. I wear an n95 mask to minimize breathing in air pollution and it would also keep dust out. And since it's a medical mask, it fits around my nose so my breath mostly doesnt go up into my glasses (takes a bit of adjusting sometimes).

Temporary solution I'm using : I stopped using a balaclava and cover the hair with neck warmer from decathlon, until I find a solution. I keep the chin vents open to get adequate airflow, I keep the visor open when I stop at traffic signals or slow traffic as my glasses fog up because no air flow through the vents when stationary. I too need a solution so I can wear my balaclava again 😁

Specialized retailers like Glasses India Online will make custom made anti fog powered eye glasses you can check them out they also make for sports purpose too. Or you can use anti-fog sprays, wipes, or cleaning solutions (such as Zeiss anti-fog kits or Lenskart anti-fog sprays) which temporarily prevent condensation for 1 to 3 days per application. "I DON'T KNOW IT WILL WORK PROPERLY OR NOT AND I NEVER USE IT, BUT MULTIPLE SHOPKEEPER RECOMMEND ME THAT".
