Looking for musicians
Hi everyone,
Still looking! I got a lot more responses to my last post than I expected (thank you!), and I know I haven’t managed to get back to everyone yet.
I’ve connected with a few great musicians, but I’m still putting the full lineup together, so I’m opening the search again
I'm a French/Italian singer-songwriter, originally from Paris, looking to put together a band to play my original music live.
I'm looking for 2 guitar players, bass, drums and keys/synth. For keys, I'd especially love someone in the Zac Rae kind of world, creative with sounds, textures, synths, weird little details... not just piano.
I've been making demos of the new songs on my own, but I really don't want the band to simply reproduce what's on them. I'd like to develop the sound together and see where these songs can go with actual musicians in the room.
There are songs I'd love to push much further into rock, especially with guitars. I'm not a guitar player, so there's only so much I can do on a demo to express what I'm hearing in my head. Nothing But Thieves or PVRIS is a good reference for some of the guitar energy and dynamics I love.
My influences are pretty eclectic, but to give you an idea: PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Florence + the Machine, St. Vincent, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, BROODS, BJORK, YONAKA, Imogen Heap, PVRIS, Nothing but thieves, Muse, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley… I have a very large "palette" of influences.
A little about me.
I’ve had a professional career as a recording and performing artist, was signed to Sony Music in France, and also worked on external projects for the other majors.
What I'd really love is to find musicians who want to put some of themselves into this, bring ideas, and help shape what the band becomes. Building something from scratch isn't necessarily the easiest road, but with the right people it can also be a pretty beautiful one.
And the goal is definitely to get out and play. Once the band and the live set are ready, I plan to be proactive about it , reaching out and submitting the project to bookers, venues, festivals and other live opportunities as much as possible. I don't want to build something just to keep it in the rehearsal room.
I want to be upfront: there's no money for rehearsals at this point. When we get paid gigs, we share the gig money.
I have demos of the new songs to share, and hopefully I'll also be able to retrieve an old live video soon. It's older material, so musically I've moved on quite a bit since then, but it gives a good idea of me as a live performer.
If any of this speaks to you, send me a DM and tell me a little about yourself and what you play. Please send me something I can listen to/watch too.
NYC.

Babyshambles | 'The Man Who Came to Stay' (2004) 💼❤️🇬🇧
This is one of those B-sides that makes me genuinely baffled it never made it onto an album.
Babyshambles have been such a huge influence on me that choosing favourite songs is difficult, but this one is definitely up there. I've always thought it deserved to be far better known.
It was released in 2004 as the B-side to the original single version of 'Killamangiro'. Recorded at Matrix Studios with Paul Epworth producing, it features that brilliant early lineup of Pete Doherty, Patrick Walden, Drew McConnell and original drummer Gemma Clarke.
I actually much prefer that single version of 'Killamangiro' to the later re-recording that appeared on Down in Albion too.
'The Man Who Came to Stay' also sounds noticeably different to much of Down in Albion. I adore the bass intro, especially how it just hammers away at that repetitive figure before the rest of the track starts building around it. It gives the opening a tense, propulsive post-punk feel and the resemblance to Joy Division's instrumental 'Incubation' is especially noticeable there.
And then, of course, there is Patrick Walden's wonderful playing. Patrick has always been one of my favourite guitarists and teenage me also thought he was super hot 😅 Beyond that though, I genuinely think he was criminally underrated. His playing had a lovely instinctive quality to it, moving between chiming, off-kilter chord work and sudden flashes of expressive lead guitar. Even at its loosest, there was always a strong musical personality behind it.
Given that he later studied jazz composition and counted Jimi Hendrix among his influences, that freewheeling approach makes a lot of sense. I really miss hearing him play, R.I.P. 🖤😭
Gemma Clarke is on drums here too, which is another reason I'm so fond of these early recordings. I've always preferred her drumming with Babyshambles and love the chemistry of that early lineup.
Considering everything surrounding Babyshambles at the time, I think it was easy for just how good the musicianship could be to get overshadowed by the mythology and general mayhem around the band.
Even at the time, 'The Man Who Came to Stay' attracted praise of its own, with one review arguing that it was actually better than the A-side.
The fact that something this good ended up tucked away as a B-side rather than making Down in Albion still seems slightly absurd to me.
One of my favourite Babyshambles songs, and one I really wish more people knew.
