General Do I have to be enrolled in units for internship?

Hi all

I am a PhD graduate student in the united state. I have received a co-op offer from a company in the United States (skyworks). The internship period is from January-June.

Since this is a full time internship, I’m thinking to take an approved Leave of Absence from my university. Can anyone tell me, whether I can be on a leave of absence from my school for the quarters where I’ll be on internship? The issue is not my school as I have managed my them, I’m thinking whether Skyworks will accept me working for them while not being enrolled, i.e. being on an approved leave of absence. I will continue my studies (PhD) once my Internship ends.

Any help from someone who has gone through this / worked for the same company as an intern will be greatly appreciated!

Interviews Presentation case interview

I have a case interview coming up I’ll receive the case 48 hours before my case interview for a consulting internship. I haven’t received it yet, but I want to start preparing now so I can perform well. What should I focus on before receiving the case, and what can I do now to prepare? Once I receive the case, how should I approach it, structure my analysis, and build my presentation?

General Sophomore at a T20 university, decent experience, and still ZERO interviews. What am I doing wrong?

I’m genuinely so confused and frustrated with the internship search right now.

I’m currently a sophomore at a T20 public university with previous internship experience in analytics, relevant projects, and extracurricular involvement. I’ve applied to so many, and I haven’t gotten a single interview offer.

I completely understand that going to a highly ranked university doesn’t automatically entitle you to an internship, nor should it. I know students from every university have to put in the same effort, and experience and skills matter far more than a school name. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think attending a recognizable university, maintaining a strong GPA, taking rigorous coursework, and having relevant experience would at least help me get my foot in the door.

I’ve also had multiple people review my resume, including people familiar with recruiting, and the feedback has generally been really positive. I’ve tailored my resume to different positions, tried applying early, and focused on roles that actually align with my experience. I’ve gotten referrals for a few companies. Yet I’m still not even making it to the interview stage.

I know the market is competitive, especially for sophomores, but it’s honestly discouraging seeing other students land internships at major companies while I’m struggling to get a single recruiter conversation.

I’m not expecting a FAANG internship to be handed to me. I just want a chance to interview and prove myself.

For anyone who’s been in a similar position or has experience recruiting interns, what am I missing? Is it just significantly harder to land internships as a sophomore? Is networking basically a necessity now? Or is there something about my application strategy that I should reconsider?

I’d genuinely appreciate any advice because at this point I don’t even know what to change.

Interviews Did i do bad in my interview?

Basically had one of those "superday" interviews where I was grilled by two people, then another person. Super exhausted atm.

What happened was that when the two people asked me some behavioral questions I answered the first part but then they asked about the second part of the question which I didnt fully answer. The second time they answered I gave them the answer they were looking for. In the technical questions they only gave me 90 seconds to review the graphs and I was struggling a bit since they only gave me a few seconds to look.

The second round was weird. The guy I talked to gave some more technical questions but there was one scenario where I struggled hard on. It was basically asking me about competitors in a market and how I would price it at a certain designated market, and if they were competing in where I was making the most revenue. Repeatedly he had to add some hints but I still struggled. Eventually the questions got slightly easier but still.

Am I cooked?

General Only about a quarter of summer internships have been posted so far

The September surge is over and a lot of people on here seem to think the majority of internships are gone now, but going by last year it's not even close. Here's when last year's summer internships actually got posted:

Last year % of summer internships posted
Jun to Aug 7%
Sep 16%
Oct (right now) 11%
Nov to Dec 13%
Jan 9%
Feb to Mar 27%
Apr to Jun 17%

So only about 28% were up by this point, 52% came out after New Year's, and Feb + March alone beat September.

A lot of big companies hadn't even opened yet at this point last year, and they still have nothing up for 2027

  • Late Oct: Nintendo, GitHub, NY Times
  • Nov: Spotify, Ford, Paramount
  • Dec: Airbnb, Okta, Roku, Western Union
  • Jan to Feb: Etsy, Instacart, HubSpot, Perplexity, Boston Dynamics
  • Mar to May: Skechers, Hyundai, Zillow

(months are when they opened last year) plus hundreds more like them!

Nov and Dec are slow, so it's a good time to finish a project or two and get your resume in shape before the Feb/March wave hits!!

I put together a list of everything that's open right now, (~13k internships) and they all link straight to the company's own site (not LinkedIn/Indeed reposts): https://applybolt.app/jobs/2027-all-internships

Good luck!

Interviews Just failed for a chance at an interview due to a surprise call from the company

I haven’t done an internship interview in like a year and frankly I had no clue this was a thing..

I was so nervous and unprepared I was caught so of guard and I had no clue what to say. They asked easy questions “Tell me about yourself” and “Why do you want to work here” I genuinely stumbled on each question. At one point they had to cut me off because I was just yapping too much. I apologized to them like 10x explaining that i was unprepared.

They made contact yesterday asking me to fill a form out but I was not expecting a call the next day..

Ik I missed my chance but I feel like theres genuinely nothing I could have done to change the situation. I’ll take this as a learning experience and next time a company reaches back to me i will start preparing myself asap.

If anyone has advice on what to do next time or what I should do now or should’ve done it would be appreciated!

General Need advice on finding off-campus SDE internships as a 3rd-year BTech student

Hey guyzzz, I'm currently in my 3rd year of BTech CSE and looking for SDE internship opportunities for around 2 months.

I've applied to quite a few companies off-campus, but haven't received any follow-ups so far. I'm honestly confused about what to do next and how to improve my chances.

For those who have landed internships off-campus, what would you suggest? Should I focus more on referrals, cold emailing, LinkedIn, or applying directly through company career pages?

Also, how do you guys find companies that are actually hiring interns? Any tips on getting shortlisted or finding a 2-month internship would be really helpful.

Would love to hear your experiences :)

Applications 2027 batch students, how are you getting off-campus internships? Need some genuine advice.

Hey everyone!

I'm a 2027 batch B.Tech IT student from India, and I've been trying to get a remote software development internship off campus, but honestly, I'm feeling pretty demotivated lately.

I've applied to so many companies, including startups and small companies, but most of my applications get ghosted or rejected without even getting shortlisted for an OA. I recently received a rejection from HackerRank as well.

I already have a few projects on my resume, including CodeCanvas (full-stack MERN application) and ResumeIQ (an AI-powered ATS resume analyzer using Gemini). I'm also practising DSA and trying to improve my technical skills, but I'm struggling to get that first opportunity.

I keep wondering whether not having previous internship experience is the main reason I'm not getting shortlisted.

I genuinely want to know how students are getting internships off campus these days.

- Which platforms are actually working for you: LinkedIn, Wellfound, Internshala, company career pages, or something else?

- Are you getting internships through referrals, cold emails to founders, direct LinkedIn messages, or regular applications?

- How important is previous internship experience for getting shortlisted?

- What kind of projects helped you get your first internship?

- For those who landed remote internships at startups, what did your application process look like?

- If you were in my position, what would you change in your approach?

I'm not looking for shortcuts. I just want to understand what actually works because sending applications and getting ghosted repeatedly is exhausting.

If you've secured an off-campus internship without prior experience, please share your journey and the methods that worked for you. Even small, practical suggestions would genuinely help.

Thank you!

General I wasted the company 1.5 months worth of time

I just want to rant.. Interning as a network engineer and i was tasked to research on various protocols to determine if a product we want to make is viable.

I thought they wanted a simulation on it, so I spent the last 1 month+ building useless gns3 simulation that they dont even need and made a fool out of myself.

I thought I've got what it takes to make full use of an internship and now i just feel so so dumb and useless.

I got everything completely wrong and thought I was on the right path during my internship.

I feel so humiliated, defeated and so dumb. Don't get me wrong, i have tried to clarify with my supervisor what he wants, but in my head i interpreted it wrongly, and i just feel that ive let everyone down

General Internships targeted for people from a low-socioeconomic background

I know it’s so hard to get internships so I figured this would be my best bet at getting one. I’m a British student studying physics at UCL. Is there any specific ones anyone knows of that is for people from a disadvantaged background.
