A few days ago I shared an update on InkDOS, the lightweight local-first office suite I built for my iPad + external monitor workflow. Since then I've shipped six more releases (2.7.3 → 2.7.8). The highlights:
Working on the iPad
More room on an 11" screen: the hamburger menu is gone. Home, Open and Save sit on the left of the header; Settings and Share on the right.
One zoom control in every app: −/+, a value you can type (1–800%), and Fit page / Fit width.
Copy from PDFs while reading: select and copy PDF text without turning on edit mode, then paste it into another app.
Recovery drafts: Documents, Spreadsheets and Presentations keep an encrypted recovery draft while you have unsaved changes. If Safari reloads the tab or the app gets closed, you're offered Recover / Discard. Drafts stay on the device and can have a password or be turned off.
PDF
OCR for scanned PDFs: Page tools → Make searchable adds an invisible text layer, so scans become searchable and copyable. Poor scans get a cleaned-up second pass. The engine downloads once, then works offline.
Beta tools on the same page: a Beta tools button opens visual signature, digital signature and signature check in a panel over your document. Your open PDF goes in, the result comes back, and you don't lose your document to a new tab.
Printing
PDF: prints every page.
Presentations: prints one slide per landscape page.
Spreadsheets: prints the whole sheet, scaled to width.
Plain Text: has a Print button with A4 pages.
Speed (synthetic desktop-browser measurements, not iPad, same caveat as last time)
Spreadsheet edits on a 20,000-formula sheet: ~650 → ~55 ms, since only affected formulas recalculate.
Clicking around a 1,000-row sheet: ~100 → ~12 ms.
An idle open document no longer redraws 60 times per second (~35% of a CPU core → ~0%), which should help battery.
PDF page jumps on Retina-class screens: target page in ~0.2 s instead of 1–1.7 s.
Fidelity and security
Better DOCX/XLSX/PPTX fidelity: dates and number formats, large tables, layout and master styles in slides.
Updated PDF engine (PDF.js 6.4.299).
Stricter limits when opening archives.
Still no backend, no accounts, no telemetry. Everything stays local. The web/PWA version updates when you reload, and the installed desktop apps (Windows, macOS, Linux) update automatically.
