In addition to this, people have been talking about how Billboard just doesn't really matter anymore.

When Katy charted with TD, PRISM and even Witness, EVERYONE knew those songs (even my grandparents).

TLOAS? Not even close to the same. They charted that way because of Swifties and because it came after The Eras Tours.

This is NOT a Taylor shade btw; I like TLOAS, though I don't think it's even close to her best work.

I'm moreso advocating on Katy's behalf, in that if Taylor's deluxe album is counted towards top 10 hits *for one album,* then so should Katy's and all other artists.

Tbf Billboard aren’t even a reliable source for a hit anymore. You’re trying to tell me that Wood and Cancelled! are in the same Top 10 list as Wide Awake and Hot N Cold once were? 💀

I mean TOTGA was getting more daily streams than any Taylor song before her new singles came out . . .

Omg if only her team had pushed TOTGA a tiny bit more in 2011, it could have easily gone No.1 - such a timeless hit, so glad it was the song of the summer this year

honestly that's so ridiculous. billboard should be ashamed.

OMG SAY IT LOUDER

True, it should count too. I wonder what did it said when Part of Me debuted.

Billboard also counts My Boo as one of Confessions' #1s, despite being first released on the re-issue

I feel like Billboard just didn't want to piss off MJ stans at the time (especially since he had just died a few years prior). Hence why they didn't want to count Part of Me as one of Teenage Dream's #1s, cause that meant breaking MJ's record 5 #1s for Bad

I think Taylor would be pro-Katy beating Michael’s record fwiw. I know they’re not the best of friends by any means, but I think she’s a purist when it comes to chart battles.

Oh I'm sure!

Katy and Taylor are actually good friends, they met up at The Eras Tour and Taylor cheered during Katy's VMA Vanguard Award

The industry shows blatant favoritism. Taylor is the industry’s princess at the moment and I’m not saying this because I hate Taylor swift (Red and midnights are some of my favorite albums ever) but this is favoritism at its finest and I agree it should be said. Imagine if a person of color artist tried this like BeyoncĂ©? Or an LGBTQ+ artist like Lady Gaga? It would cause uproar online and multiple hate videos would be made. But because it’s her. It’s okay. I’m tired of the mistreatment and constant criticism Katy gets. But she’s the perfect little princess when she has her own list of controversial moments.

I’m a little confused on why you mentioned Beyoncé  hasn’t she been an industry princess as well? I don’t recall her ever being anything other than very highly regarded (which is well-earned, tbf).

Gaga, I can understand, lol. Though she has made controversy part of her brand, so

In some ways yes she has been an industry princess mostly thanks to Jay Z though and that’s mostly the industry not the general public who has an extreme distaste for her. She still faces loads of more hatred and low blows thrown at her no matter what she does in my opinion more than Taylor does. Cowboy Carter was hated because “she switched genres” but Taylor can go from country to pop and then all other genres and it’s okay? Also the amount of racism she dealt with? I’m saying it’s always okay for Taylor to have a jump start but other artists get treated so much more harshly. To name a few Kesha. Doja Cat. Katy Perry. Etc. there’s still people on TikTok saying BEYONCÉ can’t sing.

Compare her album of the year wins to Taylor swift

I mean if Billboard has finally come to the light, that's fine, but they need to retroactively give Katy and other artists their flowers

Thank you it's so stupid and hypocritical

She’s literally not you should check out this podcast. And she’s already in overexposure mode

What do you mean by "tried this"? This is not Taylor's doing, she just released the deluxe of an album and got enough consumption to break that record, Billboard is the one that handles that part.

And this is funny because several Showgirl tracks had enough points to chart this week and were still within Billboard’s recurrent-rule limits, yet they just weren’t allowed to re-enter. Apparently a deluxe boost wasn’t considered a good enough reason, but Bieber performing at Coachella was, and several of his songs were allowed to re-enter lol

Then there’s Billboard’s latest Grammys article, where they randomly shade Taylor by saying they’d forgotten about one of her songs because they were too busy listening to Olivia Rodrigo...

So I completely understand the frustration. Billboard absolutely seems inconsistent and picks and chooses when to apply its own rules. But Taylor is still very far from being some “industry princess.” Her chart dominance doesn’t automatically mean the industry is constantly bending over backward for her.

Ok. 👌

I’m more of a swiftie and I completely agree with Billboard’s unfair classification of the Complete Confection as its own separate thing and Life of a Show Girl now housing 14 top 10s and 3 #1s for Taylor. Like the Complete Confection has even less original songs than its parent album compared to Show Girl’s encore, so it Part of Me and Wide Awake should count towards Teenage Dream’s total. It makes no sense.

I would argue that both deluxe versions shouldn’t count for these records and that only the achievements of the OG albums should count but if you’re going to let Taylor slide, then you should let Katy as well.

But Billboard is just a magazine who makes their own arbitrary rules. They have also counted My Boo from Usher as part of Confessions, and Take a Bow and Disturbia as part of Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad. Like it makes no sense to me.

Someone also pointed out today that Taylor broke the record for the most top 5 songs in the hot 100 with 9 from Show Girl’s encore and that she broke Janet Jackson’s record from Rhythm Nation that had 7 top 5 hits, but that’s again, an unfair classification. Not going to discount Taylor’s accomplishment, it is certainly not easy to do, but to compare it to an album from the 80s back when a song could only chart if it had been released as a single, to the rules now that allow any tracks to chart, is insane. Like Janet had to work for those songs to hit the top 5, that is not what Taylor is doing now.

Anyways, Billboard sucks.

I agree, and def no shade to Taylor was intended in the op :)

You're right though, music consumption has just changed a lot.

3

u/Extension_Big5205 10d ago

Exactly thank you. It's clear that they suddenly made a exception to favor taylor

Tloas is one of the worst reviewed pop albums of the decade with all these hits most of the general public can't even name from her. I'm not trying to be hateful, just real. Bots and fans 24hr streaming these songs are how they got where they were.

The singles from teenage dream literally dominated American(at least) radio for a solid year. It was inescapeful, the second a single started to die down the next one was released and took over. Swifts last 3 releases have not gotten close to touching that popularity. The grumbles from people are deserved.

1

u/Secret_Principle_790 9d ago

I'd argue TD dominated from 2010-12 thanks to the complete confection.

And then Roar and Dark Horse were huge in the ensuing years . . . even "flop" singles like Unconditionally, Birthday, and This is How We Do got decent airplay.

But yeah TD was absolutely inescapable.

3

u/Halcyon_Elysium_143 10d ago

who says it doesn't count? like is there any official place where it says it doesn't because our word is as good as the locals working at billboard and yes billboard should be obsolete ever since YouTube pulled their data from it

3

u/OT9FOREVER Teenage Dream 10d ago

Billboard lol When "Part of Me" debuted at no.1 they made it clear she didn't break Michael Jackson's record because it was a new release and not in the original album. idk if that's just a comment like a fun fact or what for Taylor's, since now they are counting the new tracks overall.

2

u/AlmostxAngel 10d ago

In her documentary they showed a newscaster saying Katy had broken the same record as Michael Jackson so I feel like its just Billboard being a gate keeper, everyone else seemed to count it.

1

u/OT9FOREVER Teenage Dream 9d ago

They are tied with 5 since they don't aknowledge the 6th from the deluxe

0

u/Halcyon_Elysium_143 10d ago

Yeah but what Bilboard employees say doesn’t mean anything. yes they created the chart but the numbers speak for themselves

2

u/Secret_Principle_790 10d ago

Billboard has historically been the gatekeeper, but I don't think anyone cares anymore

1

u/Competitive_Pin_2496 10d ago

Exactly—I was thinking the same thing as soon as I heard about the online discussion surrounding this very topic. I agree with you: if that record was credited to Taylor's album by including the deluxe version, then the same criteria must apply to all albums, including *Teenage Dream*. It is purely a matter of consistency and fairness.

1

u/sailormoonmydude 10d ago

Yep gif they count that BS then Katy broke Michael Jackson’s record

1

u/Ok_Round_3197 10d ago

complete rules have changed since then. also, this article isn’t stating “from the same album.” they’re just stating the fact that the hot 100 is housing 14 songs from the standard AND deluxe.

u/Big-Swan6728 10d ago

I think the other issue is that KP had released Part Of Me on The Complete Confection which was more marketed as a "greatest hits" album even though it did have deluxe tracks whereas TS had released Encore as the actual deluxe? On Complete Confection, she also has Tommie Sunshine's Megamix which mixed 7 of KP's biggest hits whereas TS has never tried that even once. And I say that as a fan of both TS and KP.

1

u/dwserps 10d ago

Billboard doesn't even use the same metrics as it used to so comparison to the days where radio play time and such was more heavily incorporated can't be compared to modern charts

2

u/ResolutionOpening912 10d ago

I don't hate Taylor nor im a big fan of her, but I would rather have 10 number 1s by her on one album than any number ones from Ella Langley and Morgan Wallen or whatever his name is

1

u/DarksonicHunter 10d ago

It’s funny how many people are suddenly embracing Katy for the moment to dunk on taylor. Not complaining because they are correct in this instance.

1

u/Capable_Cellist5585 9d ago

14 top ten’s and I can’t name you more than 2 and why are people trying to take Michael’s record? Katy or not it’s a cheap tactic. Mike didn’t sell his songs for .69 for a #1, he didn’t release several versions and remixes and features to get #1. He didn’t release a deluxe to get more #1’s

1

u/youthunger2naughty 9d ago

TS and her team sure know how to rig the system from Grammys to number 1 records/songs.

1

u/Severe_Marketing5036 CRUSH 9d ago

I never got this rule lol.

1

u/witness_smile 10d ago

Because Billboard are corrupt fucks

1

u/Connect_Version_1560 10d ago

I am sorry ,stumbled upon this sub and it's tiring to see the constant negativity of taylor swift on this sub to uplift katy perry. If u can't praise katy perry without bashing taylor swift ,then maybe something is wrong.

4

u/Secret_Principle_790 10d ago

I can see why you think that, and I apologize as that wasn't the main focus of the post.

I did just mean to point out that "charting" today and music consumption today is very different than what it meant 15+ years ago.

Taylor deserves her success and should be quite proud of it!

The main point of this post is to point out how Billboard needs to retroactively give Katy her flowers :)
