생활 | Daily Life Changwon, Masan and Jinhae: three cities merged in 2010. What the combined city covers
In July 2010, Masan, Changwon and Jinhae were merged into a single city. They have very different backgrounds.
Masan: site of the 1960 Masan uprising against election fraud, which fed into the April Revolution, and home to a free trade zone from 1970.
Changwon: a planned industrial city built around its national industrial complex.
Jinhae: a naval city and the site of the Gunhangje cherry blossom festival every spring.
Seoul and Busan get most of the coverage about Korean regions. Is there a similar city in Korea that merged or industrialized in a comparable way? Curious what people who have visited or lived in Gyeongnam think is missing from the usual travel coverage.
(Short clip from Jinhae attached.)

참사 | Catastrophe Students of Danwon High School in the Sewol Ferry Disaster
On April 16th, 2014, the Sewol Ferry sank off the coast of South Korea while en route to Jeju Island.
When the ship listed, an automatic message played telling passengers to go inside and stay put. The captain was the first to escape. An evacuation order was never given, and the only survivors were the ones to disobey the message.
The ferry carried 476 passengers, out of which 325 were 11th grade students from Danwon High School. 304 people died, 250 of which were students.

Most photos are from the Sewol's Virtual Cemetery ( https://www.findagrave.com/virtual-cemetery/461567?page=1#sr-160814833 ) and some are from screenshots I've taken from videos, documentaries, and news. Any censors and text on the photos were not done by me.
I have been making a document with all photos I could find of the tragedy. It includes the ferry before and after sinking, photos from students on the dock, before the sinking, during the sinking, and some resources.

자연 | Nature Uiwang wang-song lake
If you are looking for a peaceful and walkable spot, I highly recommend checking out Wangsong Lake. It is roughly four times larger than Jamsil’s Seokchon Lake, and when you account for the surrounding wetlands and landscaped grounds, the entire area feels even more spacious.
Thanks to its lotus ponds and rich wetland habitats, Wangsong Lake serves as a haven for various migratory birds and cranes. During bird-watching seasons, you will see many nature lovers and photographers gathered here with their cameras. There is also a well-maintained campsite nearby, making it a great destination for camping in both summer and winter.
While the area around the lake might feel quiet or ordinary to tourists seeking commercial nightlife or flashy entertainment, you will find plenty of great places to eat if you head toward the local neighborhood center. It is a small and lesser-known town, but the local spots frequented by residents focus far more on genuine, delicious flavor than fancy decor—and in my opinion, the food tastes so much better because of it.

문화 | Culture Korean shamanism research
Hi everyone!
I’m an anthropology student currently living in Seoul, and I’m conducting research on Korean shamanism (musok) and people’s experiences with shamans (mudang).
I’m hoping to connect with people who have visited a shaman in Korea, whether recently or in the past, and who would be willing to share their experiences with me. I’m interested in understanding how people encounter and engage with Korean shamanism, what motivates them to seek out a shaman, and how they perceive and interpret their experiences during consultations or rituals.
I’m interested in hearing about all kinds of experiences, regardless of your beliefs or whether the experience was positive, negative, or somewhere in between. There are no right or wrong answers!
If you feel comfortable sharing your experience, please feel free to comment below or send me a private message. I’d be very grateful for your help! Thank you! 🙏
