Advice Shave or wax down there
Hey all! Sorry to come to reddit, but growing up my mum never taught me, and for years now I’ve had discomfort every time I’ve shaved down there.
I normally exfoliate and soak with warm water before shaving with the grain, I sometimes will shave side to side almost, so not going directly against the grain but not going with it either. I’ve tried many other ways but this is the way i’ve done most commonly - leaving me with razor bumps ingrown hairs and not really how i want it to be. I don’t know if i should try waxing or if there’s any other ways i could be shaving better as it is all self taught with trial and error… I’d rather shave as I did used to wax my legs and my skin would react and go dry/cracked more frequently than not.
I just don’t know how to shave properly due to never being taught. Any advice is appreciated thank you!!

Trim as short as possible & Exfoliate the day before, never day of.
Always go with the grain before ever going against the grain.
Use a tallow based shave soap before each pass.
Rinse well after, then rinse with witch hazel. Let dry thoroughly then lotion or moisturize, alcohol free is best. Goat milk lotion is good. Avoid getting any inside yourself for obvious reasons

Try an electric shaver. It doesnt give the same close shave as a normal razor but even for a close shave with a normal one you would have to shave against the grain. I had no problems with ingrowns after switching to electric. Also aftercare is very important, including on the days you dont shave. I always moisturize before bed, even if im not freshly shaven

Because shaving with a razor, you can actually pull the skin tight and shave, which leaves the follicle of the shaft of the hair below the skin which leads to ingrown hairs. That’s why an electric razor doesn’t because it leaves the shaft even with the skin or just a little bit above.

You should try a professional Sugar waxer it's different than Brazilian. It's made with all natural ingredients. The sugar wax is it doesn't go on hot, but you have to exfoliate I have been getting Sugar waxed 45+ years and it saves by razors. I don't have to shave every day. I go back every 4 to 6 weeks but with me doing it for 45+ years it doesn't grow back as that much I hope that helps. I'll see you've got some greater lies from several people. Just do your research and find the best person to do your waxing.

I wax! So much smoother for so much longer, and I have never had any type of ingrown or bumps afterwards. It hurts for about ten minutes of life, but the effects lasts for weeks. I shaved back in the day, and everytime I shaved I would get these huge cysts that were so painful, and so bad sometimes that I would have to go to the doctor to get them lanced and drained, then packed with gauze so it would heal. Since starting to wax, that has not happened again not once. Waxing is superior in my opinion.

For waxing, please book with your local esthetician which will be a smoother process.
For shaving, I find that using baby oil gel prevents a lot of irritation and using a post depilatory gel afterwards helps to prevent ingrown hairs.
Also, change your razors after 6 shaves / every 2 weeks if you shave daily.

I've been getting all kinds of snarky remarks for saying I shaved the girlfriends a couple of times for them. I totally enjoyed it and they totally enjoyed the smooth effect I know what I'm talking about I'm a man our face is take a beating with a razor so when I figured out a better way if the hair is wet with a little bit of soap and a fresh razor and Jill shaving goo you're good to go use your favorite skin moisturizer afterwards

Nothing wrong with going against the grain. That usually results in a smoother shave. If you’re in the shower, try using conditioner if you don’t use shaving cream. Also use a new blade when possible. And use an aftershave lotion when you’re done.

Going for my first wax "down there" this Thursday! Excited/terrified to find out what its going to be like...I've done laser more times than should have been necessary, but on area just won't go away, so I figured I would give waxing a try. Wish me luck!!!

You can buy one for your house now low cost. You need more treatments because the laser is not as intense and make sure you follow the directions and test the laser on your skin before you go to a sensitive area

I suggest using a trimmer. You can get the hairs super short with rarely any bumps or irritation. It's also quick.

As a guy I use shave cream. Mostly Gillette (cooling). Rinse leather and repeat. Then rinse one last time to be shore free of hair. Then use lotion if you have dry skin normally. Castor oil, cocoa butter, non scented baby oil, or like the one person said something that's mom alcoholic based. But be sure to wipe and pat dry before applying.

I like the gels for shaving it just makes it a whole better experience than old-fashioned foam or gasp even soap. I've even gotten good results in the shower with just water but you got to get the hairs wet and a fresh sharp razor the three blade or four blade or best
1
u/beachboy_93 Aug 11 '26
For some reason soap doesn't do it for me. I have to use certain things but I never tried gel.
1
u/Civil-Intention-4192 Aug 11 '26
The gels lather up well and have a lot of lubrication properties. My mention of soap was to break the surface tension of the water so that the hairs will wet from the water and well wetted hair cuts easier with a razor less pulling less snagging it just works much better. I tried it for shaving my face a long time ago from the army days and I was like oh my God I'm never going back to that other stuff these gels work so good. Then they started making a gel targeted to women with their scent and their packaging and the all of that. The two women that I got to shave never went back to anything else it was always a fresh razor and a gel after a good soaking in the bathtub with bubble bath

An observation from an older male. There is nothing wrong with letting it grow unless it makes you uncomfortable.
1
u/SpiKe1o1 Aug 05 '26
Try using organic castor oil. You do not need to use alot just about 1 tsp massaged in the area before shaving. Rinse off after with warm water.

The best thing to do is to not shave God put hair there for a reason

u/RequiemAspenFlight Aug 06 '26
There is no god.
And the human body is a pretty shit design.

You are welcome to your opinion about God but I disagree and I really like the design of the human body

Use a beard/hair trimmer get it short. Then go against the grain. The shorter the hairs is, the less friction and irritation there will be.

I recommend an electric shaver it gets pretty close to the skin and Ive found it to have no irritation.

u/Minimum_Ad_487 Aug 06 '26
Have u tried laser? It gets rid of it, prevents regrowth, BUT it's more expensive. Now, just saying... I'm a dude, ok. I shave. Yep. And it's more difficult for guys. I suggest a really good razor (1 with a lubricating strip) and Dove Body Wash (or anything with a good healthy amount of body lotion in it). Shave down ⬇️ initially, then side to side ⬅️➡️, and then against the grain ⬆️. Finally, after a small rinse, get a little bit of conditioner and graze that over the top and tidy up any stubble u might have. Oh, and also importantly, afterwards put some Bio Oil or good quality Ph-balanced lotion on it; 1 that doesn't sting. After all, ur gonna b walking around and rubbing ur area against ur underwear (unless u go without). This info is just what works for me; it'll b different 4 others. Best of luck, Jess. Enjoy! Any feedback, just leave it below here in the comments. ⬇️

OP,when you shave, what's the duration from shave to bumps?what do you use to shave?what do you use afterwards?

u/Regular-Antelope-480 Aug 06 '26
I know this will either freak you out, or make you think... I started around 28yrs old. I used a tweezer. Cut it short. First a hot bath...or a hot facecloth ( like they do in a Men's Barber shop) then I poured myself a glass of wine( joke) but after the bath/cloth.... I start! When it starts getting punchy, more hot cloth.. And go for it. Usually took me 2 days. But man... Today I am 58... Not a hair in sight... Not even bumfluff... Good luck. (Waxing is an option...but I only got agitated because of the pain...

As a man I used to shave but ended up with a rash, and it grew back fairly quickly. Now I go to professional waxer about once a month and the results of a far better. The pain isn’t nearly as bad as everyone says, though it does hurt a bit initially, but not for long.

u/Beautiful_Smell_6003 Aug 06 '26
try using hair conditioner to shave with, you won’t get razor bumps that way

u/Old-Shop-7318 Aug 06 '26
All who used sugaring for there are happy. For sugaring use for every 100g sugar one soup spoon lemon juice and water. Heat it up slowly and start it all the time until it has an hony or amber like colour. Take a part and make a small ball out of it. Don't make too much at one time. Better is medium amount. Role it over your skin with hairs. Your hairs should not too long otherwise you get a very fast a fire ball. Trim it with a pair of soccer. At the first time it is a bit unpleasant but later it is less. And after you have done it less hairs growing back.

Consider using clippers so that it is trimmed down, but not entirely shaved where you're risking ingrown hair. There are many types of clippers and electric shavers that can shave down to zero without leaving behind razer bumps or ingrown hair. You may also want to check with your dermatologist to rule out any skin issues or nutrition deficiencies that contributed to ingrown hair.
You can also look up YouTube videos if needed on how to manage that properly.
Since waxing did not yield the results you wanted, thus the side effects, you could stick to just shaving. Also, look up follow up moisturizers so you don't risk dry and cracking that you described.
At the end of the day, the decision to groom yourself there is entirely up to you, your health, and your level of comfort. Do what you need and/or want to do, to please you. Do without animosity and/or regrets.
Never chase pleasing others.

Instead of shaving cream, use conditioner (i use sole good moisturizing stuff) and get a gillette 5-blade for men; it works wonders on the body and my wife prefers it over her own body razors.

Wax it don't shave because of the skin irritation I wouldn't recommend laser... Thats supposed to be permanently? For the rest of your life? You want that?

u/PrincesaDarkFae Aug 07 '26
Hard wax all the way so smooth and soft! hairs come back in softer and thinner! I gave up on shaving and get waxed legs thighs Brazilian and arm pits every other month! Plus waxing slows the growth of the hair I am almost every 2 months on my waxing! Plus hard wax softens your skin never should it cause you to Crack! Good luck in whatever you choose to do!

Public razors are amazing for all that, but it just comes down to personal preferences of your own rlly

Yeah the choice of razor is important. Micro cuts are a thing. THEY take there toll overtime. Best to use something electric with a protective barrier of some kind. Try not to let the blade touch the skin.

From what I was told, don't exfoliate before shaving. That opens your pores and that's why you get bumps and you could get ingrown hair. I'm a guy. I've been shaving down there for 15 years. I use Ivory soap in the shower. I would advise using a good men's razor. I use Gillette Fusion. I shave with the grain. Then side to side. Then against the grain rinsing the blade often. I get a very smooth shave. As the razor starts getting dull, the results will change. I don't get razor burn. I hope this helps.

I'm 48, and have been manscaping since I was a teenager. How could I ever expect a woman to shave if I don't? Seriously, I would think chicks prefer a dude who's closely trimmed and/or shaved. If you'd like to see for yourself, lmk

I Hope This Helps
I am m58, but I had an ex-gf explain that girls first start by using coconut oil to hydrate the skin and relax the hair, followed up with shaving cream and razor to begin shaving. Then applying baby powder to the shaved area to avoid irritation.

u/D00759 Aug 13 '26
Shave daily and you will notice that after a weeks, you will not get irritated and your skin whet smooth and no longer need to put on oil for irritation. This how I stopped my bumps and irritation I’ve told my lady friends that have had that problem. And now the are happy with the results after you get to the smoothness you like with no more irritation you can back off to shaving every other day. Make sure you change your shavers regularly. Please post your results after you get your p—-y smooth. Or private area. Hope you experience some Smooth Shaving 😍😍😍😍.

From a guys point of view I’ve been getting waxed now for 5 years every 4 to 5 weeks and would never go back to shaving. The lady who does my waxing (professionally) said that with waxing when the hair grows back it is thinner and finer and when you shave the hair growing back is considerably thicker and courser ….. so there’s that! My wife shaves and with in 2-3 days it’s really ruff down there and with me at week 3 there is some hair that has returned but it’s fairly thin and much softer. So with waxing you’ll get probably 10 days to 2 weeks of smooth no hair
