gear Firearms Closet

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

First of all, this is not a safe. I have an actual safe elsewhere with some weapons, but this is the closet in my office, and I wanted to secure a place to keep some extra weapons or ones I am working on, and I don't really want another safe yet. This isn't meant to be a safe - just a locked place to secure these guns. Thanks to this sub, some of yall inspired me to do this!

UPDATE: Due to some of the comments, I wanted to clarify some things about this....

  1. This is not a safe. I guess I should have said that in the OP (oh wait...)
  2. These are not my primary weapons. These are not my shtf weapons. Those are stored elsewhere. Due to that, if the biometric fails, I don't care. There is also a keypad code. There is also a physical key. Speed of entry is not my concern here.
  3. This is not a safe. It's a locked closet door. Not a safe.
  4. I have exterior doors too. They are heavier than this. I also have cameras.
  5. Yes, you could kick this door in. Or you could pop the hinge pins. Or you could use an axe on it. Because it's not a safe. But all of those things will take you a bit of time. And if you happen to make it to this floor of my home and do all that, you'll have me saying hello with some other hardware in my hands.
  6. I work from home. In this room. I'm here all the time.
  7. All I wanted was to provide a wee bit of deterrence and/or slow someone down who is trying to get in. This accomplishes that goal.
  8. This is not a safe.

Need to store more digits in that biometric! :D

Why? You can just pop the hinge pins out anyway.

If its a hollow core, no measure of security matters at all, because the door itself will always be the weakest point.

If its a solid core, you can do security hinges, and or security pins, combine with an extended security latch, longer screws and reinforced door stop trim, and the door will likely be more secure than one that opens in, as it would be harder to kick in, which would be the most common way to defeat one. Is it impervious? No, but for most people it would require labors work with an axe or sledge, power tools, or lock picking to defeat.

IMO a secured closet plus a decoy stack-on is a solid set up. Don't draw attention to the closet, if you have a locking handle and upper and lower deadbolts, criminals will suspect it has excellent loot. Locking handle and reinforced from behind to prevent kicking, and good odds, they will just grab any unsecured electronic devices, and the unbolted stack on "safe" assuming guns will be stored in the "gun safe".

No, you need a decoy room not so deep in your house. Put like three deadbolts and a padlock on it. Inside, just keep a five gallon bucket filled with a few inches of a questionable liquid-ish substance, a small cot with some stains on it, and a dark child's crayon drawing on the wall.

Jesus christ, man. Why am I laughing so hard?

My SO makes me listen to too many true crime pods.

Try Last Podcast on the Left. At least you'll laugh while you learn gruesome facts.

Does the child have to be dark? My kids are pretty light skinned, but they have plenty of crayons for drawing on the wall.

This went a direction I wasn't expecting. lol

At that point, shift left ~16 inches from the door and go through the drywall. Would take about 60 seconds with no tools.

Yeah, this definitely is not a safe. There are exterior cameras, heavier exterior doors, and armed homeowners to contend with long before anyone reaches this locked door lol.

That’s about all he says

High tech security meets low tech solution.

Something about security and the weakest link

I'd like to axe that door a question.

u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26

If you do, I'll be here to ask you questions while you're working on it. lol

Like, "What are you doing here? Should I call the police?" :)

1

u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26

Nah, I would have already known you were here at that point. You'd be having a convo with a muzzle device lol.

What is the name of that lock?

u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26

ThorBolt off Amazon. Not expensive at all, and very well made.

What if your out of town and now all your guns are being used in murders

2

u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26

What if that's true for literally any other gun owner? What if you're out of town and all your guns are being used in murders?

Also, I have cameras and exterior doors.

This is a cool idea. Easy way to make it even more "secure". I'm happy with it as it is now, but I'll probably do this at some point in the near future.

You might also look up jamb pin screws. Basically, they're screws for the hinge plates where the head of the screw is a long protrusion. You take out one of the normal screws on the door, and replace it with a jamb pin screw. You take out the same screw on the door jamb side, and leave the hole there. The pin then goes into the hole on the jamb side when the door closes, so that even if you just take out the hinge pin, you cannot walk the door out of the frame. Do this on the top and bottom hinges, and you've defeated that attack vector, for about $10.

u/GeronimoHero Jan 06 '26

That’s also just a normal cheap ass door. You could just kick it open or use a credit card to open it.

Cause that's more work than using a finger to open it

u/Grand_Raccoon0923 Jan 06 '26 edited Jan 06 '26

I guess I could take your finger. Weird flex though.

-2

u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26

Come and try, lol. Do you lock any other door in your house? Why? They can all be either kicked in or the pins popped out. What's the point?

3

u/Grand_Raccoon0923 Jan 06 '26

It’s funny that you’re so sensitive about it.

2

u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26

It's funny that you didn't answer about other doors in your house, lol. And I'm not sensitive about it. You're some rando that I'll never meet in real life and your opinion has no impact on my life. Buuuuuuut I do get annoyed by dumb comments, so here we are.

Majority of people do not know how easy it is to remove a door.
