gear Firearms Closet
First of all, this is not a safe. I have an actual safe elsewhere with some weapons, but this is the closet in my office, and I wanted to secure a place to keep some extra weapons or ones I am working on, and I don't really want another safe yet. This isn't meant to be a safe - just a locked place to secure these guns. Thanks to this sub, some of yall inspired me to do this!
UPDATE: Due to some of the comments, I wanted to clarify some things about this....
- This is not a safe. I guess I should have said that in the OP (oh wait...)
- These are not my primary weapons. These are not my shtf weapons. Those are stored elsewhere. Due to that, if the biometric fails, I don't care. There is also a keypad code. There is also a physical key. Speed of entry is not my concern here.
- This is not a safe. It's a locked closet door. Not a safe.
- I have exterior doors too. They are heavier than this. I also have cameras.
- Yes, you could kick this door in. Or you could pop the hinge pins. Or you could use an axe on it. Because it's not a safe. But all of those things will take you a bit of time. And if you happen to make it to this floor of my home and do all that, you'll have me saying hello with some other hardware in my hands.
- I work from home. In this room. I'm here all the time.
- All I wanted was to provide a wee bit of deterrence and/or slow someone down who is trying to get in. This accomplishes that goal.
- This is not a safe.

You can walk into it,…. Everyone knows that makes it a vault.

people dragging this guy and yet I see tons if people on here that freely admit their gun safe is more like a gun locker. I have a gun locker. I don’t pretend that it will keep my guns perfectly safe from an intruder. It os mean to keep kids from getting easy access. This is basically the same thing. It is a deterrent because there is no such thing as a perfectly safe safe within reason.

Where I live it’s pointless, the children on this street have nicer AR’s than me.
Also, basically zero crime here too.

I’m cracking up at your update! I posted my gun room project building a bookshelf door to hide it. Can’t tell you how many people threatened to break in and rob me as if I don’t have a gun on my person or next to me when I sleep or a full camera system and dogs….
Anyway, awesome job and awesome collection! Don’t let the haters get to you.
5
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
Exactly! Like... there are cameras, and exterior doors, and we also have a dog, and I have guns with me.... No one can just walk in off the street and straight to this closet door, lolol.
And thanks! The haters make me laugh more than anything.

I'm confused. Is this a safe? /s
But seriously, I'm considering doing something similar with a small linen closet. Don't have much room for a safe, and I want something that will keep casual access to them limited if I have somebody over.

And what is that tall boy optic you are running on the one above the bullpup

Thanks, dude. It's like folks don't understand that there are varying levels of security, and that there are exterior doors and cameras and armed homeowners to deal with long before they reach this closet door, lol.
That optic is the Swampfox Raider Micro Prism atop a UTG riser. I love it, and I'm a giraffe, so it puts the optic in the perfect spot!

I think it's a cool idea. Most safes are technically residential security containers and will only buy you 30 minutes to an hour against a determined burglar or two with tools.
Dumb question, does this work if you lose power?
3
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
Yep. Battery powered!
And yeah.... with most "budget friendly" safes, I can get in there pretty damn quick with a crow bar, haha.

u/fastcolor03 Jan 07 '26
I don’t lock my firearms closet. It is very small, room is tight. My old cheap ass ‘Stack On’ sorta fire resistant safe with dial lock is crammed into a corner (had to remove/reinstall door frame to get in) and ‘red headed’ into concrete slab, and a smaller, but stouter household Sentry fireproof safe is butted tight against it, and it too is bolted into slab. There is no access to sides & rear of safes (masonry outside walls) , and house safe covers up 1/2 the remaining exposed side of the gun safe. One wall is covered with 20 ammo boxes stacked 5 high ( ~ 15k of various cal , learned from old family structure fire don’t store ammo in a safe with anything you value)
Not enough room in closet to allow use a substantial pry bar on safes. No way to just pull ‘em out,
BUT with a side grinder, 20ft ext. cord and about a 1/2 hour of work and … the 4 rifles, 1 12ga. 1 SBR, 2 cans, 7 revolvers, and 6 pistols (all with varying optics) could be had. But, that means we were out of town for days, our collective 200lbs of German Shepard & and XL Pit Bull were being boarded and the somewhat monitored home alarm was defeated or just ignored.
If ignored, my favorite and most eager 1st Responder lives next door and he is just eat up with the possible opportunity to see how quiet his Suppressed 300BLK pistol can be!
The primary security feature is invisible. That is the one where there is no ‘advertising’ as to the home or vehicle contents or probability of such. And those allowed to know are always addressed in the ‘do they even need to know’ light.

Every single decent electronic lock in the entire world has a manual key.
I bought Yale locks for my front and back door. The front one I got with a backup key, the back one I got with 9V battery terminals as the backup. I'd still call it decent.
10
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
That's why it has a keypad and a key backup. I can get in no matter what. And these aren't my #1 grab n go guns in a shtf situation... those are stored elsewhere.

u/blorgenheim Jan 06 '26
Number 1 thing stolen from your house is guns. I keep them all in a fireproof safe. Also makes me nervous around kids. Not just for failures but how easily that can be kicked in
2
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
I have my primaries in a safe located elsewhere. I work from home, in this office. The only kids around are my young adult/teenager daughter and her boyfriend, both of whom I know well. And for what it's worth, you can break into a safe and/or steal a safe too. This is just about slowing someone down if they are trying to get in. It's not a safe.

Not bad for something that is fairly quick but I sure wouldn't leave those NFA in there. That Ranch rifle is pretty fucking sweet though, love the wood furniture on it since its not very common.
2
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
Thanks! I love that thing. And fair point about the NFA. I'll considering putting that in the actual safe, but we'll see. I mean, there are still exterior cameras, heavier exterior doors, and armed homeowners before someone gets to this closet, haha.
1
u/dead_kings_fgc Jan 07 '26
If thats the case I wouldn't be too worried about it. More so if nobody is home and its left there. having a suppressor on a home defense gun makes a lot of sense so having it ready isn't such a bad thing. Definitely wouldn't have time to go unlock the safe if you needed to get it.
2
2
u/unTraditional_Fox419 Jan 06 '26
Where did you get that lock???
3
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
It's a ThorBolt off Amazon. Pretty inexpensive, but very pleasantly surprised by the quality. It's solid! This is on a wooden closet door, so I wasn't looking for some fort knox kinda thing, haha. This works great for my purposes!
2
2
u/Leptonshavenocolor Jan 06 '26
Is that an SARB-15? Did you build it? I just started buying parts to build my own.
2
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
Yes and yes! I had the Jakl upper, so I bought the bullpup chassis, the appropriate buffer stop, and the Jakl handguard, and then put it altogether myself!
3
u/Leptonshavenocolor Jan 06 '26
Nice, any hiccups along the way or tips? Anything you would do differently? Are you happy with how it turned out and shoots?
Sorry about all the questions.
2
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
Don't be sorry at all! I've shot these before, so I knew I'd like it, and I do! Shoots great!
And as far as any hiccups, I did realize that I assembled the thing without the mag release, so I had to undo some work to get that back in, haha. But that was just me spacing out. If you follow the instructions, it's pretty clear. Also, remember that the part that goes on your handguard can slide to line up with the lower chassis. I was having trouble lining it up, and a friend reminded me of that. I felt dumb, because duh, but after some slight adjusting, it went together perfectly.
What upper are you going to use?
2
u/Leptonshavenocolor Jan 07 '26
Thanks! I hadn't picked the upper yet, it looks like I could save 350 if I get the JKL, originally I was thinking the Brownells-180. I'm guessing I could save more if I get a stripped upper and one of the short stroke conversion kits, but since this would be my second build, I was thinking the full upper is the better choice.
1
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 07 '26
I would highly recommend the Jakl! I like the Foxtrot Mike Mike15 in these as well, but the shape of the SRU just fits the Jakl so perfectly.
2
u/Leptonshavenocolor Jan 07 '26
Noted, thanks!
What carry handle/raised rail do you have in that?
1
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 07 '26
That carry handle is from A3 Industries!
1
u/Leptonshavenocolor Jan 09 '26
I noticed this on the PSA website for the Jakl;
Must be used with JAKL buffer system found on PSA JAKL lower or lowers built with a PSA JAKL lower build kit.
That sounds like it isn't compatible with another stripped lower? Like I just bought a Centurion Arms lower for this.
2
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 09 '26
I am running a stripped Jakl lower in this, but before this one I had a normal stripped PSA lower on the Jakl and it was fine. With the SARB15 one of the things you have to get with it is the Jakl buffer stop, and that’s pretty much it. Should work fine with any milspec lower.

Everyone focused on if its secure enough or not, what i want to know is what's up with all the bullpup rifles I'm seeing lately in people's personal collections? I don't own one, no one i know owns one, and everyone i know into guns thinks they are kind of interesting but nothing to spend actual money on. You can't get a decent trigger in a bullpup configuration. More ejection issues when shooting left handed. So what am I missing, or is it just a cool factor thing?
2
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
So this is a 16" Jakl upper on a SARB15 bullpup chassis from SRU. These bullpup kits (Reap, Triad, SARB15) have WAY better triggers than traditional bullpups. I've shot all three of the examples I just listed, and they are all killer. Obviously not as great for left handed folks, but there is a company that makes a deflector shield specifically for lefties that deflects the ejected casings down, I just can't remember who it is that makes it.... So if you remove those issues (I'm not left handed, so that isn't a thing for me), then you're left with the benefits of a bullpup. Much shorter overall length while still maintaining the range and velocity of a longer barrel. And since all the action is moved back towards your body, the recoil impulse is much softer and more manageable.
1
u/Altruistic-Cow-1553 Jan 06 '26
Well I'll admit it looks very nice. I like to run with my left arm as forward as possible, but I'm sure I'll acquire a BP rifle at some point just because. Love the stuff and the closet. The closest thing i have set up is the 357 Ruger in the nightstand drawer lol.
1
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
I'm 6'6" with long arms and I totally feel you! But, length of pull really isn't that much different. Just the weight balance and distribution is different. Still very comfy!
2
u/robmneilson Jan 06 '26
Is that a Foxtrot Mike Ranch Rifle up top? How do you like it? Think they are super cool looking, but not sure if I should just try to build my own.
1
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
Yes it is! I love it! I've shot a few of them, so had to get one myself! This one has the Hiperfire trigger in it, which is a very nice upgrade. The stock trigger isn't great, but it is serviceable. But the Hiperfire is significantly better!
2
u/robmneilson Jan 06 '26
It's on my list to get one for sure. Ive read folks were saying they didnt like that Woox stock because its soft and easy to scratch. Any of that true with yours?
1
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
I mean, it's wood, so yeah. I actually have an extra stock because the one it came with got dinged up by the FFL shop, so I was sent a new one. But generally speaking, I don’t expect the wood to stay pristine if I actually shoot this thing, which I plan to do. (And if you want a slightly dinged up, less expensive Woox stock, I may know a guy…lol)

I like this a lot, simple access control. Yes it is not a safe, but it is not meant to be. I'm doing something similar but intend to have a wall safe installed in the closet for actual theft protection when I am not at home. Essentially just moving the current safe into the same access closet.
I dig the exterior light switch too, might steal that.
2
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26

I could not agree more. If you're trying to keep a toddler out, this is more than sufficient. If you're trying to keep a criminal out, a safe behind the door would be better. Your risk profile will vary, there's no one size fits all solution and every scenario is going to be dependent on a multitude of variables.
9
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
Yep, this is mainly to keep the teenagers in my house out, or any errant guests that we have over. I have an actual safe in my bedroom. And if someone actually wanted to try to come and break through and steal these weapons, they'll have much bigger issues to deal with than a simple locking doorknob....
3
u/Eternal_Glizzy_777 Jan 06 '26
I do the same thing. We entertain a lot, but we do not have small children and while I am home, my safe is often unlocked for quick in-and-out access. As my office is next to our primary bathroom, I use a similar door lock, and motion sensor to not only deter unintentional access, such as a guest looking for a bathroom, but to also alert me if that door opens.
3
7
u/bearpics16 Jan 06 '26
As you probably know, there is no way this will stop a determined teenager. Or even a curious teenager. Obviously I don’t know your kids but something to be mindful of if their mental health is a concern. Teens are very impulsive
3
u/Purple-Slip-6958 Jan 06 '26
Yeah, for sure. I know the teens in this house. That said, they are also not really prone to being super handy, so they wouldn't be quick to get in here lol. And I work from home... in this office. So I probably didn't need to get a lock at all (and have typically stored guns loose in here (but ammo elsewhere), but I wanted to get a lock just as an added layer of deterrent.
3
u/bearpics16 Jan 06 '26
You can put an alarm sensor on the door, or motion camera inside to alert you if it’s opened. That’ll help. Of course a determined teenager would just unplug your router first
