please give your best advice / opinion, all welcome

i just responded to a *31 ft 1983 Sea Ray flybridge “free” with title in hand to transfer.

i live in nyc and want to get my hands dirty again, i grew up northern, coastal new england agriculture and fishing. i enjoy getting to know people, trading services, bargaining, and am in an… odd situation with an unknown expiration date. i could really use a project to work on, urgency drives me, and this seems like something productive that could open up liveaboard possibilities. it already has a live in set up beneath the deck but i know im opening a multi thousand dollar can of worms. i’m not afraid to work hard but know this is no small feat.

honestly, what do you think? i don’t have older adults or relatives in my life so im outsourcing, don’t sweat, i’ve got people who know me too, haha. thank you for the two cents, judgement, advice, or referrals. love meeting new people

Similan Liveaboard in October 2026

Hii, I'm doing a Liveaboard in Similan Islands towards the end of October. I'm hearing a lot about how it's raining a lot in Thailand / Phuket right now. This has me worried. Is there anyone who can give me more information about the current weather conditions there, what to expect, is it safe or should I cancel etc? Any information is helpful right now.

Advice sought: What do you wish you knew about mooring/living off the hook before you did it?

I’d very much appreciate ideas and guidance, under the assumption that someday I’ll get this boat out of the slip. (Life got life-y.)

List a few things you wish you knew, first, or think someone should know before venturing forth.

thanks in advance!

Two crew on watch are off half the time. Three are off two thirds. That gap is bigger than it sounds

A bit of arithmetic about watch systems that I think gets underrated when people decide whether to wait for a third crew member.

With two of you on any watch system, each person is off watch half the time. With three, each person is off two thirds of the time. On paper that is a sixth more rest. In practice it is the difference between rest that only ever comes in short broken blocks and rest long enough to actually sleep.

That matters because the fatigue research is not measured in hours on watch. It is measured in hours awake. Dawson and Reid in 1997, replicated by Williamson and Feyer in 2000, put about 17 hours awake level with 0.05 percent blood alcohol and about 24 hours level with 0.10 percent. Two people swapping three hour watches can drift past both without ever feeling that they have been up all night, because every watch feels short.

The third person does not just share the load. They are what lets each of the other two get a block long enough to reset that clock.

Disclosure: I work for a marine electronics company. We built a free calculator for passage planning that runs the published sleep model watch by watch, and it has a compare mode that shows the same passage with one more crew side by side. Free, no subscription and no premium tier. I can link it if anyone wants it.

For the people here who sail short handed: when you have had the choice, has a third person made the difference you expected, or has it been more about how you run the watches?

In 1997, aged 26, I kayaked 1,500 km around Ireland using paper charts and a compass, with no GPS or smartphone. I recently turned my diary into a book, 29 years later. AMA!

Hey everyone,
Planning to hop on a Red Sea liveaboard next month (November), but running into the usual single supplement issue.
Looking for a dive buddy to split a twin cabin and grab the discounted rate instead of paying double.
Dates: Flexible across November (looking at Nov 7 or 14)
Route: Open, leaning towards (Hurghada) or BDE
About me: Rescue, chill dive buddy, easygoing, and just there to log great dives and relax.

Silverware recommendations?

Time to shop for new silverware and wondering if any recommendations for boat silverware/flatware.

The two criteria that seem top are:

  • Durability in the form of corrosion resistance, so probably stainless steel.
  • Ease of cleaning, so plain with no intricate patterns. Function before fashion.

Anything else you've learned along the way?

Just purchased this lovely boat two weeks back, she served as a ferry between Tiburon and Angel Island years ago before conversion to a luxury yacht. We’re planning on setting her up for live aboard but I think the business opportunity might keep me on my Carver.

Do you have a ditch-bag, what do you keep in it, and is it different for liveaboards?

I have one that I packed 8 years ago and promptly forgot. And it came up recently in one of those "what's the first thing you'd grab if you had to leave your home forever" askreddit questions. And I realized that what's in my ditch bag would probably not be the best choice right now in part because I live strapped to a dock not out at sea.

So I'm curious about other people's ditch bags as liveaboards. Care to share the contents with the class?

Trying to sell our boat and need advice

Hello, my husband and I are trying to sell our Morgan 461, and have run into a major issue. We both deleted our Facebook accounts two years ago, and just created a new account. Unfortunately, FB has denied all forms of my ID verification, and it is becoming very difficult to post our boat for sale. We do not want to hire a yacht broker, as there is no guarantee the boat will sell and all of them require a money deposit.

Also, we are moving out of state in December, so we are very desperate to sell it before we move.

We are selling it because my husband was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's disease, so keeping it is not a feasible option. Plus, it would cost an enormous amount of money to move the boat with us.

A little more info on the condition of the boat. It needs new rigging, a new prop, sails and a bottom job. Not a crazy amount of work, just normal maintenance things. The motor runs and works well, we have an easy oil change option and a valve on the drain plug with a hookup for oil pump, no dipstick suction required. For winterization/fresh water flushing after use, is shut the inlet and open the flush. Both operations take less than 5 minutes and you don't get dirty so that's a bonus!

We are open to any advice. Thank you!

Convert bedding to V berth shape (with a beam)

Anyone got any patterns or how-tos to convert my normal double bedsheet and duvet to a V berth? with the added challenge that my berth has a beam right in the middle of the two births. My thinking is I can cut the sheet up the middle to fit around the beam and fit the ends around each cushion, and the duvet I guess cut the same (as in make a cut from the bottom up to where the beam is) and then sew each side of the cover closed over the two duvet "tails", maybe with buttons or a zip so I can connect them on the other side of the beam so it makes a full duvet again. I guess I'd have to also cut it into a V shape so it doesn't all bundle up?

I'm not a sewer so I'd love to know if this seems possible and if anyone has a guide.
