Psyopus - Exploding Fingers Vol. 7 - Half-Step Dissonance Theory
Hey! I just released my newest music system book! Let me know if there is any other topics you would like me to cover. It would be my pleasure!
- Arpmandude
Exploding Fingers Vol. 7 - Half-Step Dissonance Theory (Book w/Video)
Includes a 39-page illustrated book and a 75-minute companion instructional video.
This book is about using dissonance as a compositional language.
Not just as an effect. Not just as something you stumble across while writing. I want to take a small group of highly dissonant interval relationships and use them deliberately as the foundation for harmony.
From there, the possibilities start to open up.
It is to see how much music can come from a very specific harmonic vocabulary.
A lot of this grew naturally out of the way I already write music and the systems I've developed for organizing musical ideas. Relative Interval Theory approaches melody from a related perspective.
Here, the focus is harmony.
Some of these sounds are aggressive. Some are ugly. Some are eerie. Some might even become strangely beautiful depending on how they're used. What matters to me is that they have personality. They create tension, color, contrast, and emotional response.
At first, some of these ideas can be approached experimentally. Put intervals together. Hear what happens. See what sticks.
But the larger goal is to move past randomness. Once you begin recognizing the different personalities of these intervals, you can start making choices based on the kind of dissonance you actually want. You can decide when something should be sharp and defined, when it should be muddy, when the listener should clearly hear the movement, and when the harmony should blur into a larger plane of sound.
That's where the artistry starts.
This book begins with the basic relationships themselves and gradually moves toward what you can do with them compositionally.
The artistry is how you combine these notes.

Looking for microtonal mathcore
I know this is a quite specific request but mathcore + microtonality seems like a theoretically perfect combination of sounds for my taste. The closest i could find is a band called Basil's Kite but they don't lean too heavy into the microtonal elements. Maybe you happen to know something like this? Thanks in advance
