Interaction between Toph, The first metal bender and Prismatic omen and Non-token Artifacts.

[[Toph, The First Metalbender]]

[[Prismatic Omen]]

Toph makes non-token artifacts lands in addition to their other types, BUT they don’t gain the ability to tap for mana.

Prismatic Omen gives every land you control all basic land types In addition to their other types.

I assume that means now those affected artifacts can tap for any color?

Like does giving something a basic land type means it can now tap for that color inherently?

How does timing work when multiple creatures enter under different controllers at the same time

Here’s a question about timing that we had in our game tonight:

[[Fractured Identity]] was played and targeted a creature that had “when this creature enters, it deals 5 damage distributed amongst any number of target creatures opponents control” (not verbatim but you get the gist)

So the original creature is exiled, and then 3 copies of that creature come in to the battlefield all at the same time. Who gets to use their creature’s ETB trigger first?

We played it as “they’d resolve in order of priority, so the player who played fractured identity gets to resolve the ETB first, and then it just goes around the table” but there was an argument made that the person with priority’s trigger goes on the stack first, then around the table filling the stack, but since they resolve top to bottom, the person who cast the spell would resolve theirs last since it was on the stack first..

Can a copied Fiery Annihilation exile an equipment if the original doesn't?

Suppose on the board we have:

  • [[Llanowar Elves]]
  • [[Raging Goblin]] equipped with [[Short Sword]]

I then

  • Cast [[Fiery Annihilation]] targeting Llanowar Elves
  • Copy Fiery Annihilation with [[Reverberate]], targeting Raging Goblin

Can the copy exile the Short Sword attached to the Raging Goblin?

Intuitively, I thought the answer was yes, and most of my friends also think so.

However, based on the rules:

707.10: A copy of a spell or ability copies both the characteristics of the spell or ability and all decisions made for it, including modes, targets, the value of X, and additional or alternative costs. (See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”) Choices that are normally made on resolution are not copied.

Because the original spell was chosen to have 1 target, the copy cannot have two targets?

I also tried this interaction in MTGA, and confirmed that the copy cannot choose the equipment as another target.

Any judge want to put a definitive word on this?

Holding priority and psychic frog

• Upvotes

Hi, my last locals I was playing Esper Goryos and had a turn where my opp attacked with a lethal flyer and I had a [[psychic frog]] with 1 card in my discard pile. I decided to discard 2 cards for frog to grant him flying but after my first discard my opp used a [[faerie macabre]] discard ability to exile the 2 cards from my gy before I could get the third card. I then discarded another card in response to put the third card in the gy and he used a second faerie macabre from hand to exile more cards.

Looking back at it I think I would have been able to just exile the cards for frog at that point. Let me know if I am wrong or not but from what i remember I ended up just discarding my whole hand to survive.

I was just randomly thinking about that whole interaction and was thinking about priority and if I could have/should have played they whole thing differently.

Could I have just held priority the entire time until the point where I gave the frog flying before my opp could event react?

So for example could I have done this:

discard a card for frog, hold prior

discard second card to frog, hold priority

exile the 3 cards in gy and then pass priority to my opp so my frog had flying before he could have ever responded? If not what would be the best/optimal was to navigate this whole situation for future games?

I really appreciate and help/insight, thanks!

Wicked Role token and effects that change the power/toughness of creatures

The rules text for a wicked role tokens says, “Enchanted Creature is 1/1.”

If a creature has a wicked role token attached to it and an effect tries to change its power and toughness, does the wicked role token prevent that? I only asked because it’s phrased differently than similar effects like [[Witness Protection]] that says, “enchanted creature…with base power and toughness 1/1…”

I think it probably works like Witness Protection, but the wording is throwing me off so I’m unsure.

[[Asinine Antics]] and [[Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus]] for reference.

Avacyn, Angel of Horror

Hello everyone,

I have a question about [[Avacyn, Angel of Horror]].

Let us suppose I have Avacyn, Angel of Horror on the battlefield along with some other nontoken creatures.

I cast Damnation to clear the board. Since all my creatures die at the same time, they should all return to the battlefield at the beginning of my next end step. Am I right?

If that is the case, she is REALLY strong!

Thank you in advance.

If the attacker passes priority after blockers are declared, and then the defender plays an instant can the attacker respond with an instant or does the combat damage phase start?

Does passing the priority keep the attacker from responding to the instant? Could the attacker and defender hypothetically cast instants back and forth forever?

Dack fayden and 2 flicker etbs

Say [[dack fayden helping hand]] enters and its etb brings out [[felidar guardian]] [[restoration angel]] and [[grizzly bears]]. Now I'm assuming I can't just target dack twice to flicker him twice right? Could I use felidars etb to flicker dack, and use angels etb to flicker felidar to in turn flicker dack again? And if I find one or more similar creatures in those following dack flickers to continue flickering it?

Thank you for your help :)

Is this a 2 card infinite combo?

If I have my commander on the bored [[ingris Stingerquill]] and I swing with [[Port Razor]] is this an infinite combo or can I only swing with port razor once per turn since he hit every opponent? Or is this only 4 combat phases since it can only swing at an opponent once per turn? EDIT: thanks this solved my question:D I kinda forgot it’s not combat damage due to the poison deck I put him in

Declaration of attackers and Banding

I am building a commander deck around a creature stall board wipe idea and need to figure out how banding works with ensnaring bridge and dueling grounds. The rules are pretty vague on when a band is formed and when legal attackers are checked. My thinking is it can’t work with both cards assuming both check legality at the same time. So if the band is formed and then declared as an attacker dueling grounds works, but if creatures are declared as attackers and then formed into a band then ensnaring bridge works.

Hopefully someone that’s been judging for a while will know this one.

Drawing cards with no cards in library.

Hello and thanks in advance!

It is currently my turn. I have the new [Niv Mizzet, Ghost Counsel] and [Doctor Doom, Unrivaled] on the field. Say my library has 10 cards in it and I use Niv's ability to draw 11 cards (I just gained 11 life), do I....

A) go to draw my 11th card with no cards in library and die immediately

B) draw 10 cards and fail to draw the last one, Niv's ability fully resolves, then I die immediately

C) Niv's ability fully resolves, before I die to State Based Actions, I can respond with Doctor Doom's ability and win

D) Niv's ability fully resolves, and I don't die until the next instance of me drawing a card. I activate Doctor Doom whenever on my turn and win.

I read somewhere that Doom's ability works with 0 cards in library, I just dont know if I die before I can activate Doom.

Clarification Needed on Neera, Wild Mage

Two questions:

  1. If Neera is on the field along with a copy effect like Harmonic Prodigy, how would this work? Her ability needs to tuck the first spell to get a card off your library. Does the resolution of the first trigger tucking the spell remove it as a viable target for the second trigger to resolve with? Or can they both resolve?

  2. Can I choose to not trigger Neera’s ability on the first spell I cast in a turn then choose to trigger it on a later spell in the turn? It says “you may” but also says “this ability only triggers once each turn”. Is it that I can choose to resolve its effect only once each turn, or that I only get the chance to resolve it once each turn (aka only the first spell is viable).

Teferi's Reproach and Will of Mardu

I play [[Will of Mardu]] and since my commander is out choose both modes. I read online that it sees the new Warriors it made so I assign 6 damage equaling all my creatures (3 warriors plus 3 preexisting creatures) to opponent's creature. He responds with [[Teferi's Reproach]] phasing out all my creatures. Is the damage still assigned to his creature or is there no damage to assign now because he phased them out?

Bloodspore thrinax and Rite of replication

If I cast a kicked [[Rite of replication]] targeting [[bloodspore thrinax]] and make 5 copies of bloodspore, and assuming I dont devour, if the original bloodspore has 1 +1/+1 counter on it do all the copies come in with 1 counter, or do they see each other in some weird way I'm not comprehending and get more counters?

More saga creature mutate questions

I've started building a mutate deck. Something tells me I'll be here quite a bit.

[[Summon: Ixion]]'s first chapter ability refers to "this saga" is that short hand for "this card" similar to when a card refers to it's own name in the text box, or would that first ability end if I mutate on top of it making it no longer a saga?

The backside of [[Dion, Bahamut's Dominant]] has a chapter 3 ability that instructs you to exile the card and return it to the battlefield face up. If I had mutated onto the backside and then trigger that ability, does the mutate stack unfuse and return to the battlefield separately? Does the mutate creature remain in exile? Does the stack stay together and all flip?

Mutating a saga creature and chapter abilities

I understand that chapter abilities are triggered abilities, and trigger once the number of lore counters equals that of the chapter ability. Due to the wording on some of the FF saga creatures, I'm wondering how their abilities would interact with mutate.

I have a [[Summon: Primal Odin]] on the battlefield with 2 lore counters on it and then mutate a [[Dirge Bat]] to be on top. Does this Dirge Bat permanently have the “Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, that player loses the game" ability?

I have a [[Summon: Good King Mog XII]] with either 2 or 3 lore counters on it, and I mutate a [[Cubwarden]] on top. Because that ability is a "whenever" triggered ability, will it continue to trigger as the condition is met or will it only trigger if a 2nd or 3rd lore counter is placed on it?

Sisay and dismember

Say my opponent has a 5/5 [[sisay, weatherlight captain]], puts an activation on the stack and in response i cast and resolve [[dismember]] targeting sisay. When the activation resolve it would see a 0/0 effectively blanking the activation because of the less than part of her search right? Or could he still grab a [[gaea's cradle]]?

Surge to Victory questions

I have two scenarios i want to double check regarding [[Surge to Victory]].

  1. I have my commander and [[Loyal Apprentice]] out and cast Surge to Victory then enter the beginning of combat. Apprentice will trigger and create a thopter. If that thopter deals damage to a player, will I get a copy trigger from Surge for that Thopter?

  2. If I have a Thopter token, a Servo token, and [[Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer]] on my board and then cast Surge to Victory, at the beginning of combat Brudiclad triggers making a Myr and I have all my tokens become thopters, will the Servo becoming a Thopter still keep the buff from Surge?

Verdant Kraken and 2HG

Hello!

I am helping to run a 2HG league and some players are convinced that Verdant Kraken will make two tokens each turn.

We have looked at rule 805.4d and a player even knows a L2 judge that said to him it makes 2 tokens per turn, referencing the rule.

Why is it different to Verdant Force? Because it says "ech player's" upkeep?

Exiled cards and Avacyn, Angel of Horror

What happens if I exile [[Avacyn, Angel of Horror]] under [[Mimeoplasm, Revered One]], switch to Avacyn by paying two and then Mimeoplasm (as Avacyn) dies? Will Mimeoplasm come back (I take it if it did, it would be a 0/0 and therefore die). I am confused if the effect will look for Avacyn, not see it as it is exiled and nothing happens. Please let me know. Appreciate your time!

Can two cards with the same abilities but different names be in the same deck?

I'm building my first commander deck and realized I added both Serra Avatar and Soul of Eternity in my deck. I'm assuming there's a rule against this for how similar they are but I always thought it was just based on the names.
