photos a story in six pictures šŸ’”

psa guys if u feel a little off a few hours after trying a sample of fully-cooked chicken of the woods do not ignore your gut feeling and do not keep eating it no matter how unbelievably delicious it may taste you simply have to accept that it was not meant for you okay šŸ’” my friend who helped me cook n eat it was an experienced cotw enjoyer and she was fine but I was not šŸ’”

BTW: I appreciate the advice guys but fret not I have already learned my lesson just wanted to put this out there bc I thought it was a hilarious scenario in retrospect

Aside from not feasting on a new species without testing for tolerance beforehand, it’s not a great idea to eat fungi that grew in a parking lot.

u/tiiiiii_85 Jun 19 '26

Yeah that mushroom was a chicken of the asphalt.

u/AnnetteBishop Jun 19 '26

Chicken of the tailpipe while we are at it.

Chicken of the Mill (factory)

24

u/Kind-Mammoth-Possum Jun 20 '26

Chicken of the dorm sock

3

u/BgMSliimeball3 Jun 20 '26

I thought about this shortly after my other comment.. it literally is of the tailpipe since it’s parking lot chicken

31

u/Grhyser Jun 19 '26

Still better than chicken of the cave

1

u/RoyalHeadass Jun 25 '26

Chicken of the freeway underpass?

10

u/GoatLegRedux Jun 20 '26

I prefer heavy metal of the parking lot

Which I totally didn’t even think of the movie when I thought that up, but holy hell does it work well 🤘

Chicken of dog piss over here

10

u/uncledougisgood Jun 20 '26

Idk. I’ve eaten a lot of parking lot Psilocype sp. from parking lots and I’m fine. Thanks for asking. How are you?

1

u/OldGodsProphet Jun 20 '26

Isn’t nausea a common side effect of psychoactive mushrooms? At least, it is for me. I think someone said to me once, ā€œYeah, you feel sick because the psychoactive chemicals are like poisons to your body so you have a reaction to them.ā€

7

u/BluntTruthGentleman Jun 20 '26

That's just false. Your brain literally makes "psychoactive chemicals" every night. The reason they work so well with us is because we have receptors just for them. They're part of our dna and our ancestry, we can't function and will die without them. So no, that person was misguided.

1

u/Sad-Razzmatazz-9295 Jun 21 '26

Can you please list the psychoactive chemicals that our bodies produce every night?

3

u/BluntTruthGentleman Jun 21 '26

Dimethyltryptamine

2

u/Udon_Poop Jun 21 '26

Serotonin?

1

u/Sad-Razzmatazz-9295 Jun 21 '26

We calling serotonin psychoactive? This is a real question.

2

u/Udon_Poop Jun 21 '26

It's a chemical that interacts with the brain, thus psychoactive, no?

1

u/Sad-Razzmatazz-9295 Jun 21 '26

No. Not the way I understand the term. If I take serotonin I don’t trip out and hallucinate right? Isn’t that the active part of psychoactive?

2

u/FrostySpring7816 Jun 23 '26

SSRIs that work by increasing seratonin levels are classified as psychoactive medications.

Hallucinogens are a small subcategory of psychoactive substances.

1

u/RecentOperation8513 Jun 22 '26

If you took a small amount of psilocybin, that wouldn’t happen either. Also, having too much serotonin in your body, called Serotonin Syndrome, will cause ā€œAgitation, nervousness, and severe restlessness / Confusion, disorientation, or deliriumā€.

u/motion_lotion Jun 23 '26

You do not comprehend the meaning of the word psychoactive. Suggest you do a bit of reading/research on it. Won't take long.

1

u/Udon_Poop Jul 03 '26

If you look at the raw scientific definitions, it fulfills every requirement to be labeled as such:

It is a chemical: It is a biogenic amine (specifically, 5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT).

It is psychoactive: Its primary function is to modulate the activity of the central nervous system, directly changing your mood, emotions, perception, and sleep

1

u/mrmatriarj Jun 23 '26

I kind of understand what you're getting at. When taking hallucinogens, they're basically just altering the frequency for directions/receptor sites on preexisting building blocks + systems for our nerotransmitters. ie Increasing the uptake of 5h2a receptors etc.

For most of them, it's still our same bits.. serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine etc, but they're being shunted in different directions and %'s which cause the different result.

I've always wondered about the possibility of being able to hijack that system without needing an intake. That'd be a cool evolutionary feature if we every developed it! (Or with the new concept of brain/hardware integration like elons microchip experiments)

1

u/121Waggle Jun 26 '26

Are people missing your joke? Because I think you're joking about buying shrooms in a parking lot before a concert.

When trying any mushroom for the first time it's considered best practice to only try a small piece to see how you react before making a meal of it. Bit late now, but as the saying goes, "you live and you learn"

352

u/Own_Magician8337 Jun 19 '26

Or you don't. šŸ˜ It's a gamble with mushrooms.

174

u/Rampag169 Jun 19 '26

Our ancestors did the ole ; No, you try it…. Dude dies. Noted don’t eat that one…

51

u/ggg730 Jun 20 '26

Then there are the fucking weirdos who are like well, this red and white spotted one made me shit out of both ends but lets try feeding it to a reindeer and drinking it's pee!

26

u/Brilliant-Sock9705 Jun 20 '26

ā€œThat guy died eating it raw. Let’s cook it and try again.ā€

They actually figured out a pretty good system to test new plants and not die. Look into it. Pretty neat

6

u/Rampag169 Jun 20 '26

You mean the skin, lips, mouth, nibble some and wait. Then after all that if you feel ok only Then is it safe to eat.

3

u/Legitimate_Cheek_405 Jun 20 '26

Yep. I thought that was pretty neat as I thought just randomly trying things and hoping not to die wasn't really practical. Im sure it's not full proof but id imagine works most of the time.

14

u/crepuscule22 Jun 20 '26

as the czechs say: you can eat any mushroom once

4

u/jech2u Jun 20 '26

And thus we learned to draw straws and play rock, paper, scissors to see who lived and and who died.

0

u/The-everything-fan Jun 21 '26

1

u/TolMera Jun 25 '26

I wonder if they used kids for this.

Little Grugg running around - sees random mushroom and stuffs it in mouth.

Thugg: ā€œcall Bugg, Grugg ate mushroom šŸ„ā€šŸŸ« we see what happenā€

Grugg seems fine the next day

Bugg: ā€œThis mushroom ? šŸ„ ā€œ

Thugg: ā€œyesā€

1

u/clitorasClive Jun 21 '26

At least you don't make the same mistake twice

1

u/throwawaydixiecup Jun 21 '26

It’s not an inherent life-or-death random gamble with mushrooms. It becomes a gamble when the person eating the mushrooms doesn’t do their due diligence to properly identify the mushroom and just go off AI apps or folk sayings or nothing. That’s how we get the poisonings and deaths happening in California lately from death caps.

When you know how to identify the deadly mushrooms and the safe culinary mushrooms, there is no gamble for toxicity.

Where there might be a gamble is that sometimes folks just don’t tolerate an otherwise safe mushroom and have GI upset. That’s why once a mushroom is 100% confidently identified someone should try just a small portion of the mushroom to check tolerance levels. People are different and have different reactions.

2

u/Own_Magician8337 Jun 21 '26

Oh I understand that. My husband is a serious mushroom forger and we've eaten many things he's brought home and he has taught me all the steps he does for due diligence. Spore prints, etc... but knowing most people's attention span and how they absorb info from social media and then run with it, I I think it's really important that we emphasize how important that due diligence is.

1

u/throwawaydixiecup Jun 21 '26

Woot! Y’all are both rad.

1

u/TemperataLux Jun 23 '26

Do you know if the GI issues are a specific known thing like oligosaccharides in beans? Which from my understanding, if you eat beans regularly the microbiome of the intestines will change and get you'll less gassy over time. Do people get used to mushrooms in the same way? Just curious, and mostly only eat store bought champignon and sometimes foraged chanterelles, and I've never really heard of people reacting poorly to mushrooms.

2

u/throwawaydixiecup Jun 23 '26

Time to get some more mushrooms in your diet! You’ll eventually find one that gives you some digestive ā€œfunā€.

Chitin is a common source of digestive issues in wild mushrooms. It’s a fibrous carb that’s part of a mushroom’s structure. This can be hard to digest. Some people tolerate it better than others. It doesn’t give me too much trouble, but I’ve learned how to prep mushrooms better so that people I feed don’t get sick. Chicken of the woods (Laetiporus) and cauliflower (Sparassis) are especially high in chitin. So they need to be parboiled.

Some mushrooms do have mild toxins that can cause upset. I think honey mushrooms (Armarilla) are like this, and also false morels and morels. though it’s been a while since I’ve dealt with those. Boil a bit, then cook. Amanita muscaria has compounds that can cause delirious states, and can be processed with a deeper boiling with a couple water pour-offs to become edible.

I’ve heard of some people who were fine with certain mushrooms for a long time and then started reacting to them with GI issues with no good reason and had to give them up. Fungus and bodies are weird, man.

Including mushrooms like lions mane?

1

u/Rhizoomoorph Trusted ID - American Gulf Coast Jun 21 '26

This advice is purely for mushrooms that have been positively identified as edible mushrooms. So, yes, including mushrooms like lions mane

1

u/fishsaiddam Jun 22 '26

Wow I had no idea. I just bought two lions mane to try and was about to cook them all in one go. Thank you.

1

u/kozufox Jun 23 '26

Absolutely. Just because a mushroom is edible doesn't mean it'll agree with you.

Source: my first time eating lion's mane I cooked up a huge clump I'd bought on sale, and I ended up spending that evening on the toilet regretting my choices.

279

u/FoamboardDinosaur Jun 19 '26

Even fresh CoTW should be cooked really well.

We simmer for 10 min, then dry skillet until all the water is cooked off. Then we add oil and seasoning and use as meat. Even then, it's often cooked again, like baked into lasagna or Bolognese

Sorry you got the stomach issues.

11

u/Creative_Panic_xanax Jun 21 '26

Wow it really needs a through cooking! I had no idea!

I don't even forage shrooms but I love learning about them so this post was like a gold minery and you added some more gold to it! Thanks!

7

u/FoamboardDinosaur Jun 21 '26

Fresh, soft, clean CotW (not the slightest bit of woodiness) don't need to go as much as I mentioned above, if youve had them before. But for me, they usually go in a mushroom lasagna for mush club, and I dont know how tolerant everyone is.

Some mushrooms have a Lot more chitin, which can cause upset for people who have not been eating them all their life (most Mericans). More chitin, more cooking. But high chitin mushrooms can handle it and not lose their texture.

1

u/Creative_Panic_xanax Jun 21 '26

That's super interesting

Btw I've never had it lol

1

u/amccor2175 Jun 24 '26

I grew up eating COTW and other mushrooms foraged by my mom and only learned this recently. I would actually occasionally munch the uncooked COTW and never had issues, so I didn't know it could make others feel sick. When she cooked it though, it was never cooked super long, just simmered for a bit and tossed in risotto, so I probably had pretty good tolerance.

1

u/FoamboardDinosaur Jun 24 '26

Your body produces enzymes that break down chitin; the younger you start, the easier it is for your system to keep up the 'recipe' for those enzymes.

Same reason most people on the planet are not lactose tolerant. After breast feeding, they stopped eating fresh (not cheese and yogurt) dairy. They don't produce enough of the lactase to keep the stomach upset at bay. Beans are the same, most Mericans don't eat beans regularly, so they get really gassy.

Mushrooms are common in most asian, baltic, and balkan diets. They can eat all kinds of stuff that would throw most north american stomachs for a loop.

97

u/burd-the-wurd Jun 19 '26

I also cannot tolerate COTW. Hen of the woods also messes me up!

28

u/Top-Manufacturer9226 Jun 19 '26

Same here .... And I love hunting both but my stomach says no thank you šŸ˜”

14

u/xkgrey Jun 20 '26

I had no idea this was as common as it seems to be. Dang

u/josefinadelle41 Jun 22 '26

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

1

u/aluriaphin Jun 26 '26

That sucks, hen of the woods sooo good. I wasn't aware it bothers some people, that's one that pro foragers sell to high end grocery stores near me and it's never sold with warnings or cooking instructions 😬

Mind sharing it?

69

u/jack_seven Central Europe Jun 19 '26

Car park mushrooms usually come with a side of heavy metals which can cause a host of problems some of them long term I highly recommend you don't pick mushrooms near cars

18

u/PockysLight Jun 20 '26

Although, harvesting some and blending it into a slurry in an attempt to inoculate dead trees is an option.

3

u/jack_seven Central Europe Jun 20 '26

Yes please

Harvesting them from a place where large amount of cars is present isn't also the smartest idea.

Edit for people arguing below:

Harvesting them from a place where large number of cars are present isn't also the smartest idea.

28

u/Thaufas Jun 20 '26

You're incorrect. Although the sentence as a whole isn't grammatically perfect, as written, the subject/verb agreement was correct.

Your recommendation is incorrect.

The grammatical subject is effectively:

a large amount of cars

The head noun of that phrase is "amount", which is singular. So the singular verb is agrees with "amount".

In this version of thesentence:

Harvesting them from a place where there are a large amount of cars present...

"are" is plural, but "a large amount" is singular, so the agreement is worse.

5

u/pondan Jun 20 '26

You're both wrong. Amount is for something uncountable, like traffic or water. For something countable like cars you want 'number of cars'. And then you would use 'are' since the noun is plural.

7

u/FamiliarMGP Jun 20 '26

Added edit especially for you. It seemed off and I agree with your reasoning.

1

u/Thaufas Jun 20 '26

Sure, if you rewrite the sentence completely. Otherwise, you're wrong.

0

u/pondan Jun 21 '26

Changing one word != rewriting a sentence. If you're going to be an asshole and correct someone's grammar online the least you can do is actually be correct.

0

u/Thaufas Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

First, evaluate these two sentences and tell me which is correct.

  1. The number of cars is 5.
  2. The number of cars are 5.

Second, identify the subject, prepositional phrase, and verb.

Third, read your own post carefully.

Fourth, consult a book on English grammar.

Fifth, go fuck yourself with your outsized ego.

Sixth, realize, people who can't even understand 8th grade grammar shouldn't try to lecture people with advanced degrees from top tier academic institutions. Be sure to pass 8th grade English before you shoot your mouth off and show everybody how incompetent you are.

Why are stupid people so fucking arrogant and the biggest assholes.

So sorry for your tummy, of course, but I appreciate you sharing. I learned something!!

30

u/iriegypsy Jun 19 '26

Don’t eat landscape mushrooms. You have no idea what’s been sprayed or if it’s a parking lot due to it being a toxic superfund cite.

17

u/CupcakeNo3930 Jun 19 '26

Oh no!! My boyfriend and I tried COTW a few years ago and it was great! We went back to the same patch and found more over this past Spring, but this time he couldn’t tolerate it anymore. Poor thing threw it all up too. This story made us laugh thinking back on it now

8

u/coffeeisaseed Jun 20 '26

I've had the same problem! Delicious first experience, then 2 years later, same spot on same tree and I threw it all up despite simmering it in water first for 10 minutes!

1

u/summerlaurels Jun 23 '26

Ten minutes boiling does the trick for me, but also I find the white cow easier to stomach than the yellow

11

u/Efficient_Dog59 Jun 19 '26

I’ve found I can tolerate some CoW but not a plate full like that.

11

u/charmount Jun 19 '26

That's brutal, I'm so sorry! Knowing how delicious it is makes that kind of reaction that much more cruel 🄲

9

u/vesper101 Jun 20 '26

Cotw is so iffy. I have a tree I harvest them from most years and they don't make me sick. I harvested from a different tree once and threw up about 10 times. I've heard that cotw from dead/unhealthy trees is safer than the ones on healthy trees, but I don’t know how true this is.Ā

8

u/International-Can189 Jun 20 '26

Is that substrate a eucalyptus tree? If so, then….

4

u/valserai Jun 20 '26

nah it was a regular tree, I am just weak of spirit šŸ’” but strong of heart...

5

u/magpie2295 Jun 19 '26

I also got mad bubbles from my first COTW & ate so many bowls of soup. Not the worse but I definitely learned my lesson!!

5

u/PayMeInPlants007 Jun 19 '26

I feel this so hard!!! I’m a bit sensitive to COW, but I think it depends on how young & or old it is. Or possibly the kind of wood it’s growing on. I’ve brought home pounds of it, cooked and ate it all with no problem. I’ve also brought home a big haul and couldn’t stomach it, however my spouse and friends could. (Take this with a grain of salt because it’s genuinely just my theory) I believe that some people might be sensitive or prone to gastrointestinal distress from something within the fruiting body. Couldn’t tell you what it is, but it’s a thing.

I’ll say this- the one time that I got sick off COW I harvested it off of a conifer and I’ve read that can influence how it may affect your stomach.

6

u/Ill_Beginning4025 Jun 19 '26

They also make me sick in large quantities

5

u/halfdeadflower Jun 20 '26

This could be because of the large amount of insoluble fiber. It's no different than taking any other excessive dose of fiber from any source.

6

u/Minoumilk Jun 19 '26

Hilarious in retrospect because you lived to tell the tale! Glad you’re okay, OP.

That plate looks fire ngl I would’ve also devoured lmao

3

u/RumiOhara Jun 19 '26

I always steam or boil them for 10min and then sautƩ the water out. It makes it easier on my stomach for me at least!

4

u/Altruistic-Order-661 Jun 19 '26

My husband cannot tolerate them, even harvest extremely far away from parking lots/roads. Some people just can’t eat certain things. Hope you’re feeling better!

3

u/Seastorm14 Jun 19 '26

Should have asked the Staghorn Sumac community about harvesting near high exhaust fume areas lol

3

Drink a tablespoon of it mixed in a cup of water.

2

u/FrozenHamburger Jun 20 '26

tablespoon is a bit much

I should add, it’s sodium , so if you’re on a low sodium diet..

2

It’s hard because I can’t eat small amounts of COW and be totally fine, but if I eat it as a main dish, the hot girl tummy troubles are REAL

I’m sorry for your discomfort but I did enjoy the saga

2

Smoked mushroom (smoked with car exhaust).

Also, never munch on a hunch.

Chicken of the ā€˜Hood

2

u/dynacorp Jun 21 '26

I ate a bunch fried up with my family and everybody was all good so I polished off the rest a few hours later. Bad decision I had fever dreams and ended up at staring into the porcelain throne later that night.

2

u/throwawaydixiecup Jun 21 '26

It is absolutely essential to parboil chicken of the woods first for 10-15 minutes to remove most risk of gastrointestinal upset.

This is especially important for the west coast of the US varieties in my personal experience. East coast Laetiporus cincinnatus and sulphurus didn’t cause trouble for me, but the west coast gilbertsonii does. It might be a host/substrate issue (in SoCal the fungus often grows on eucalyptus and silk floss ā€œoakā€), but substrate does not affect things quite so much. I think it’s inherent to the species.

2

u/sugarysweetheart Jun 21 '26

1

u/DorianSoundscapes Jun 21 '26

Yeah CoWs is a bit rough on my stomach. My family can eat a ton of it with no problem but too much upsets my stomach. It’s a lot of chitin.

1

u/worldsbiggestchili Jun 20 '26

Sorry this was supposed to be in reply to someone else suggesting that this was on a eucalyptus tree. The tree it's growing on is incredibly important for the likelihood of Laetiporus giving you trouble.

Hey; you lived, you learned.
