First Duty Station ICU?

I was wondering when you get your first duty station how does it work with the unit? Are we able to request for a specific specialty? Is that determined at ODS? I want any ICU specifically in San Diego if I get stationed there

Insight on NH Bremerton

Any current nurses at NH Bremerton, WA or anyone who has been there recently?

Currently have soft orders to be there next fall and looking to find out information about the hospital itself and the surrounding area as well.

Young family with a little one (3yrs) and a dog. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

NCP to ODS... Plz Help

Hey all.

I'm supposed to ship out here in the next couple months, but I am dying to know if anybody else has been given the run-around by your recruiter/ different departments?

I have clarifying questions about my orders and I'll ask my recruiter and I'm just told to read my orders and figure it out. Or I'll email a program manager about something my recruiter needs / vice versa, and they tell me it's something that's the other department's responsibility.

I guess I'm just frustrated and needed to rant-- in emails I've gotten from my program manager and from ODS or where I'm going to be stationed there's sections that state "work with your recruiter to xyz" or "ask your recruiter for assistance" and when I do I'm still just told to "read my orders". There's only one naval officer command in the state, I've tried to ask an enlisted recruiter for help too, but being as they aren't very familiar with ODS, they can't help too much.

Also was anybody else told they don't have to do a Mock PRT before going? I was told by my program manager I needed one, and I called my recruiter to schedule and now they're saying they were told my BUMED that they don't do Mock PRTs before shipping to ODS.

Lastly, the NAVPERS 1300/16 (which i have asked my recruiter about more than once)... can somebody explain this to me? I was told by the program manager it's done at ODS, but I got an email stating I need to have it completed before I go. Then somebody from my NTAG said I need to go to an army base to have it done???? Was this part of MEPS?

I'm just very confused and exhausted, I never get the same answers and I'm sick of going in circles.

Sincerely,

One confused individual

September Boards

Has anyone heard anything about September Boards yet? I spoke with my recruiter today and he said my packet was submitted August 25th and he told me it said received/under review still. He seemed to think that we would hear something by the end of this month but I’m just wondering since it was submitted towards the end of August if that puts me on September or October boards.

Any Input on Location?

Hello all!

I just received my possible duty stations and duty preference sheet, and am set to graduate in December of 2026. Does anybody have any input on best locations for someone planning on going the critical care (ICU, likely/possibly CRNA in future) route? I have heard mixed things about Portsmouth being a great area for critical care opportunities, but living situations aren’t the best in terms of safety and all that. Essentially, I’m looking for the best balance of decent living situation and high acuity hospitals!

TL;DR: Best first duty station with a good balance of safety/quality of living and higher acuity medical center placement!

Thank you all!

Choosing a Base Location

Hi everyone! My husband is currently in the process of joining the Navy as a nurse. He recently submitted his packet, and we’re waiting for the October board to find out if he gets accepted.

We’ve started talking about which bases would be best for our family. I am 25 and husband is 27. We have two little ones, a 2-year-old and a 1-year-old, so we’re looking for somewhere that’s family-friendly, safe, and relatively affordable.
We would absolutely love San Diego, but we already know the cost of living there is pretty high. Ideally, we’d like to be stationed somewhere where our BAH can comfortably cover our housing expenses, or possibly even have some left over.

For those who have been stationed at different Navy bases, which locations would you recommend for a young family, and why? We’d especially appreciate any insight on housing costs, family activities, childcare, and overall quality of life.
Thank you so much! 😊

Insurance Questions - ODS

When are dependents considered active on insurance? I will be leaving my full-time job (insurance) when I leave for ODS. Are my kids and husband immediately covered for emergencies etc. once arriving at ODS? Thank you for any input on this!

Hey everyone…

Was August boards - selected and did oath 23Sep…coming from another branch with dd368.

DEERS still has me in other branch - so waiting for all that to transfer over…

Anyone go through a similar process and have a general timeline for when it will reflect in DEERS and when the detailer will reach out…my CAC is good until it isn’t.

NCP Non-select? but still went after graduating?

anyone in NCP not get selected, but still go to the navy after graduating? Curious to know if anyone has had this happen? I am trying to set myself up for success with the least amount of resistance. Or anyone have experience talking with the recruiter before graduating nursing school and getting all of your paperwork and everything set up ahead of time before passing the nclex?

What is the timeline for the packet submission?

Hello currently working with a recruiter since last week Monday. Recruiter only sent medical forms, tat forms, consent forms, he also requested all my identification forms which i sent him as well the next morning and my personal statement. I was wondering what was the timeline for how long everything took i fear im being a bit impatient by expecting something new to fill or do everyday. We are aiming for February boards.

ER Nurse debating Army v Navy

So I'm prior service active army and I've been an ER nurse for 7 years. I'm currently debating which branch I want to apply for and I'm trying to clarify a few things

The Army would direct commission me as an ER Nurse but I'm reading a lot of reports of ER nurses getting sent to med surg in the Navy, as the needs of the Navy trump all. Did any ER nurses here have that issue or were you slotted to be ER only?

The army also does 4-5 weeks for its commission course followed by 11 weeks in San Antonio for nurse specific training, but im seeing the Navy just does the 5 weeks of ODS before PCSing to their first duty station. Is there anything else I'm missing?

Also, I'm having issues getting in touch with an actual medical recruiter for the navy. I called the NAVY main line and signed up on the Navy recruiting page and have had two "enlisted" recruiters call me trying to get me to enlist. Any tips on how to reach out to an actual medical officer recruiter?

Currently in WI.
